By M. A. SADANAND
Half the trouble generated for the 10 to 5
time-filler for the welfare of the inscrutable
owner of the globe, variously labelled as God,
Bhagavan, Allah et al, is preventable if God,
once every ten hours or more, wakes up from
his Kumbhakarna siestas.
The shouting supplicators for the
hidden inexhaustible riches must have taken
the matrimonial oath “Yes, we will”, when the
good old God and Wife made the couple sign on
the dotted line which, in the course of a few
days, being written in self-deleting ink, got
deleted. The honeymooning couple were advised by crooked lawyers that, since the
Schedule did not contain the items and actually there is no evidence of the
acceptance of the liability to protect a good
man like M. A. Sadanand who had tumbled
into the snakepit of the legal profession, God,
his Wife and the army of legal manipulators
were not bound by the manifestation of the
Royal couple’s rantings, which if any, got selfdeleted thanks to a pot of vanishing ink.
The creators of the new profession of
deceit through centuries of promoting, faking
and legal wild goose chasing, after millions of
ignoramus make law in law factories,
throve all over the world and called themselves “Learned”, the coping stone in the
build up. There were great men - not merely
brainy or vocabulary wise, but inherently
honest. All good things, bad things and forgettable things, people and incidents must end.
Democracy has blessed many a forgettable
fellows who, without political benediction,
would have, at best, risen to the position of a
lawyer’s clerk.
God got chest pain laughing non-stop for
hours because one chap stuck like a leach to
a politician and was suffered to be one of the
bunch of Government Pleaders when I was
the chief G.P. After I was guillotined one fine
night, he jumped up. Then, after many ropes
were shredded, this great jurist was upped as
a judge. I had a small Civil Revision Petition
before him that could have been disposed of
in 5 minutes but, after 15 adjournments, not
at my instance, I asked him to verify a date
from his papers as my print was smudged. He
said, “Don’t put to me questions “. It took me
40 years to learn that lesson.
After another adjournment, the case came
up before Justice Prabha Sridevan and it was
allowed in 5 minutes. Justicing is like the

TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK
By RANDOR GUY
THE AVM STORY - 85
1957 was a very successful and memorable year for Meiyappan,
and he had every reason to feel happy. Never one to rest on his oars
and laurels, he planned ahead to become one of the top film producers
of India ....
1958 continued to be another hectic year for Meiyappan and AVM
Studios. Pictures in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada were produced as
earlier. True to his wont, Meiyappan struck a new path when he
dubbed a Bengali film into Tamil.
After having created film history dubbing a film
from one language to another with ‘Harishchandra’ in 1943 and then
‘Ram Rajya’ in 1948, his interest in dubbing had not waned. In 1958,
he chose to dub just not yet another film but an important picture by
one of the finest film makers of India, a creative celluloid poet Debaki
Bose. The film was ‘Ratna Deep’ (1951) considered an important
Bengali film for many reasons beside its maker!
Debaki Kumar Bose (1898-1971) was one of the celebrated film
makers of India who contributed much to the exalted status and stature
of Bengali cinema since the 1930s. Hailing from an affluent family,
he taught in a college, gave it up to join the Indian Freedom
Movement, later worked a journalist and entered films in 1930 as a
screenwriter. He joined the history-making Indian movie company in
Calcutta, New Theaters, and took his bow as writer-director with the
hit, ‘Chandidas’ (1932). In this film, he introduced a new genre of
folk myth based on the lives of saints.
Later, he made films like ‘Puran Bhakt’ (1933), ‘Meerabai’
(1933), ‘Seetha’ (1934, a lyrical film about Rama and Seetha, and the
Ramayana hero’s anguish over the separation from his consort),
‘Inquilab’ (1935), ‘Vidyapathi’ (1937), ‘Nartaki’ (1940), and ‘Ratna
Deep’ (1951).
In 1961, he made a valuable documentary ‘Argya’. It was adapted
from Rabindranath Tagore’s poems about the caste system in Hindu
society.
Debaki Bose’s films inspired many film makers and the noted
Telugu filmmaker B. N. Reddi stated that he was inspired by Debaki
Bose’s films, especially ‘Seeta’. The impact was so deep that he chose
to give up his profession of chartered accountancy and become a film
maker.
‘Ratna Deep’ is an interesting film with a more interesting ‘back
story’. It was based on a successful novel by Prabhat Kumar
Mukherjee which, in turn, was inspired by the celebrated ‘Bhowal
Sanyasi Case’. It is a ‘cause célèbre’, as lawyers say, and is
considered as one of the most sensational and incredible cases in legal
history.
A Raja of a small estate Bhowal in Bengal during the British Indian
Reign died young, and his family carried his corpse to the cemetery
and performed his cremation. Many years later, a bearded ascetic or
sanyasi came to the family claiming to be the Raja! The widow and
the family members were stunned because the sanyasi bore an
astonishing resemblance to the Raja. He even had the same birth
marks and moles! And he had an equally astonishing tale to tell.
He, the Raja , was not really dead but was only in deep coma when
his body was carried for the funeral. At the cemetery when his
‘corpse’ was about to be cremated, a strong storm suddenly burst
forth and the family and mourners ran away leaving the ‘body’ on the
pyre. The storm, blowing winds, sound and fury of thunder and
lightning and pouring rain woke him up out of the coma and he was
shocked to find where he was! Suspecting family conspiracy to get
at the rich estate, and feeling disgusted with human greed and perfidy,
he chose not to return to the family and wandered in the Himalayas.

Steve Jobs
in 1987
Steve Jobs in 2010
(afflicted with cancer)
Apple Macintosh SE (1987)
known as WYSIWYG - What
You See Is What You Get! This
printed page could later be sent
to a printing press, however
far it may be, for the replication of thousands of copies of
the newspaper for subsequent
distribution.
The IBM PC, the alternative
desktop computer of those
days, did not have any of these
capabilities. It had no facility
for page make-up, and the output could only be from a dotmatrix printer which was unfit
for further processing for the
production of a printed newspaper.
Giving directions to the IBM
PC, using what was known as
Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS DOS), was quite a
nightmare. For example, to
copy a file from the hard drive
to a floppy drive, one had to
type each letter of the elaborate command “copy c:\docs\
myfolder\filename a:\”. For
renaming a file, the command
was ‘ren c:\docs\myfolder\
filename.old filename.new”,
and for deleting a file, it was “del
c:\docs\myfolder\ filename”.
The mouse that came with
Apple Macintosh converted
these tasks into child’s play.
Each file you created would
be represented by a picture
(which Steve Jobs called
‘icon’) on the computer
screen and, to delete it, you
had only to point the
mouse’s arrow on that icon
and drag it to another icon
representing the trash box.
To copy a file from a hard
drive to a floppy drive, you
had to merely drag that file’s
icon from the hard drive icon
to the floppy drive icon. This
process, which is incorporated in all computer software today, was revolutionary in 1986, and it was
Steve Jobs who introduced
that user-friendly step and
named it as ‘graphic interface’.
I was one of the earliest
users of Apple Macintosh
in India, having bought one
almost as soon as it was
launched in USA. Its specifications were quite rudimentary (Monochrome,
with only 1MB RAM and
20MB hard disc) with a price
that was quite prohibitive
at 2900 US dollars! The
LaserWriter cost another
whopping $3200. But I
needed the system for
American Education Aids,
the educational institution
I was running then.
Steve Job’s guiding principle in life was ‘To think differently’ and I too adopted it
while deciding to experiment
with the publication of a
neighbourhood newspaper
using the infrastructure
created by him.
And the rest is history!
So, let me also, on behalf
of the readers of this newspaper, add my humble salute to that genius Steve
Jobs!

150 attend eye camp in
Dr. Duraiswami Hospital
By Our Staff Reporter
More than 150 persons attended the free eye camp organized by Dr. Duraiswami Eye
Hospital, T. Nagar and Lions
club of Shakti on Oct. 2 as part
of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations.
Dr. Gayathri Sreekanth of
Dr. Duraiswami Eye Hospital
told Mambalam Times that 18
persons needed to undergo cataract surgery which will be done
free. 21 had vision defects. They
will be provided spectacles at
cost price.
She said that patients were
asked to come the following
week for another vision check
and cataract surgery counselling.
There will be another free
eye screening camp in the hospital on Nov. 6, she added.
More details can be had from
Dr. Gayathri in 2434 1044.

CM YK
Steve Jobs who made Mambalam Times possible!
If those of you who have
never possessed an Apple
computer or an iPod or an
iPhone or an iPad were bewildered by the countless
newspaper columns of encomia paid to Steve Jobs
after his demise on Wednesday and thought that he
had played no role in your
lives, you are wrong!
But for Steve Job’s early
invention Apple Macintosh,
this newspaper Mambalam
Times which you have been
reading regularly for over
16 years, would not even
have been born!
Till the advent of Apple
Macintosh in 1986 - together with the now-ubiquitous
mouse,
Apple
LaserWriter and the software packages Mac-write
and Aldus PageMaker anyone who wished to publish a newspaper had to necessarily own a printing
press with a manual composing room. The investment in such an elaborate
infrastructure would have
been totally non-viable for
a weekly tabloid newspaper of 8 to 16 pages and
there would, therefore, have
been no Mambalam Times!
It was Apple Macintosh
that proved to be the game
changer! In it one could compose news stories, edit
them, give them headlines,
incorporate photographs
and place them on a page
exactly like they would look
on the final printed copy. A
print-out of the page could
