2015 Annual Report
LIFEFLIGHT OF MAINE
THE LIFEFLIGHT FOUNDATION
Our vision for Maine is a place in which
vision
every person, in every community,
has access to critical care and medical transport
when they need it.
This annual report is a publication of The LifeFlight
Foundation, which provides fundraising and public
relations support to LifeFlight of Maine, the state’s only
medical helicopter service. The LifeFlight Foundation
is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all donations
are tax deductible. LifeFlight of Maine is a nonprofit
statewide critical care transport service jointly owned
by Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and Central
Maine Healthcare Corporation. LifeFlight’s aircraft,
operated by SevenBar Aviation and based at Eastern
Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Central Maine
Medical Center in Lewiston, cover the entire state and
offshore islands. LifeFlight complements and supports
the work of local EMS and hospital personnel in caring
for the critically ill or injured. We also aid the development,
training and funding of Maine’s major air medical
needs, such as trauma training statewide; construction
of helipads; and installation of weather reporting,
navigational and communications systems across the
state. LifeFlight is fully accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

T
o be “of Maine” speaks not only to the special place we all consider home, but to an ethic
as well. Fiercely independent while caring for our neighbors and community, stepping up
and in at a moment’s notice, dropping all to tend to a friend or stranger in need, working hard,
making the most of today while preparing for tomorrow.
Eighteen years ago we set out to build a “sky
bridge,” able to reach across Maine’s geography and time in an effort to answer our neighbors and communities in times of need. We
also committed to design an air medical system to support our emergency medical service
agencies and hospitals with the lowest possible
costs while providing world-class care. As a
nonprofit charity serving all of Maine, we know
this will always be a huge challenge.
In this past year, working with Maine’s EMS
agencies and hospitals, we served 1,635 patients, meeting people in 146 Maine communities and 57 hospitals in Maine and beyond. In
addition to patients from Maine, we cared for
patients from 26 states, 3 Canadian provinces
and several countries in Europe.
LifeFlight has now cared for more than 20,000
patients, with hometowns in 441 of Maine’s
456 towns, cities and unorganized townships,
from our youngest newborns to our most elderly citizens, and with every conceivable critical injury and illness. Each of these patients and
their families have relied on LifeFlight of Maine
to change the geography of time in critical illness and give them back today and tomorrow.
Every year we report on LifeFlight’s constant
change and evolution as we work to improve
clinical care and patient safety, always our first
priorities. This year, we are pleased to share
that our research paper on airway management was recognized at an international conference in Rome as important to transforming
care, with subsequent publication in an international medical journal.
In the last year we have also significantly added to our clinical resources with new infusion
pumps; additional ventilators; and transport
systems for premature newborns and extra
corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients, the most complex of cardiac care.
Recognizing the need for additional resources
to meet the increasing number of requests for
LifeFlight’s services, we are in the midst of a
plan to expand our fleet. To answer Maine’s
weather challenges and the need for longer
distance transport, and with support from the
Foundation, we added a specially-configured
King Air 200 airplane to supplement our two
helicopters. To manage more short distance
transports, we added a purpose-built critical care ground ambulance with our partner,
Meridian Mobile Health. A similar project is anticipated with our partner in Lewiston, United
Ambulance.
We also established a new, long-term partnership with SevenBar Aviation to support the operation and maintenance of our aircraft; developed
a new centralized facility for communications
and aviation in Bangor; and, through major fundraising support from the Foundation, started on
the path to add a third, much-needed helicopter
for coastal and southern Maine.
Amidst all of these changes, what remains constant is our commitment to the people and communities of Maine, today and tomorrow. It is our
honor to present this 18th annual report to Maine
and to again thank all of our partners in care.

place
T
he physical geography of our state is uniquely beautiful. The rocky coast, vast unbroken
stretches of forest, picturesque islands and inviting communities are all features that bring
people here and inspire them to stay in spite of our remoteness or our long, cold winters.
People in Maine share a strong sense of place.
There is a common love of nature and living close to the land that our residents
share, whether they are year round or seasonal. Many people born here
choose to stay, and people who visit often decide to lay down new roots.
The same rural, remote geography that draws us
together also presents challenges to emergency
medicine providers. LifeFlight was created on the
premise that people in Maine deserve to have the
same access to emergency care no matter where
they are. The organization continually works to
meet the challenges of remoteness by upgrading
Maine’s aviation infrastructure; maintaining upto-date aircraft and equipment; and staying on
the cutting edge of critical care.
In 2015, those efforts included the launch of a
fixed wing airplane program and the culmination
of an award-winning research project that helped
LifeFlight provide better care to our patients.
4
For the last several years, there have been a
growing number of requests that go unanswered
because of bad weather or because both helicopters are already busy caring for other patients.
In May 2015, LifeFlight added a fixed wing
airplane to its fleet, which already included two
helicopters and access to ground ambulances.
The new Beechcraft King Air B200 airplane cruises at
about 315 miles per hour and is very efficient for especially long flights. The plane can also safely fly in some
weather conditions the helicopter can’t, making it a critical addition to LifeFlight’s current fleet.
The plane underwent significant upgrades to its wings,
engines and instrument panel to make it suitable for
Maine’s challenging environment. In the year before the
airplane was added, LifeFlight was unable to transport
more than 350 patients that needed our help. In the
plane’s first few months of service, the LifeFlight crew
has already cared for more than 100 additional patients.
Last spring, LifeFlight completed a research project
that examined the impact of new video laryngoscopy technology on the ability to place a breathing
tube in critically ill and injured patients. The project resulted in a paper that was presented at the 2014 AirMed
World Congress, where it won second place in the importance in changing practice category. Subsequently,
the paper was also accepted for publication in a special
issue of the BioMed Research International Journal.
Ski enthusiast Roland Bois fell in love
with the mountains of western Maine
decades ago. He moved to the state
permanently back in 2001, but he’s
been skiing at Sugarloaf since the
1960s. He takes full advantage of the
many outdoor recreational opportunities
his community has to offer, and even
works as a ski instructor.
When he suffered a heart attack one
morning on the mountain, LifeFlight was
there to ensure he received the care he
needed as quickly as possible. He was
back on the slopes just six weeks after
his heart attack.

I
f you head northwest from Lewiston, and drive almost to the Canadian border, you’ll find one of Maine’s most unique and
isolated villages. Rangeley is well-known for its crystal clear lakes, picturesque mountains, bountiful wildlife and nearly
unending outdoor recreation opportunities. Some two hours or more away from the nearest “big city,” it’s also a fine example of
what makes towns in Maine special.
People in Maine share a powerful sense of community.
Strengthened by the bonds of place, we take pride in knowing our neighbors and in being there for each other. We’re good at
coming together in times of need; at pooling our resources and working in partnership to solve problems.
There is evidence of this strong community support
for LifeFlight all across Maine. Towns vote to include
LifeFlight in their annual budget. Individuals affected
by LifeFlight inspire their friends and family to donate
through community-based fundraising events.
LifeFlight illustrates its own sense of community
through its business associates. In April 2015,
LifeFlight entered a new partnership with aviation vendor SevenBar, which operates and maintains all of the organization’s aircraft.
In FY2015, the Merritt family honored a loved
one by organizing Razor’s Ride, a fundraising
motorcycle ride that included a barbecue and
an auction. Former patient Melanie Lajoie
organized a bowl-a-thon called Educators for
Life, and inspired dozens of her colleagues, friends
and family members to collect pledges in support of
the organization she credits for saving her life after
a serious car accident. Each of these grassroots
events raised more than $8,000 for LifeFlight.
SevenBar’s 40 years of experience with fixed wing
airplanes is an important asset to LifeFlight’s current
and future growth, but its organizational values and
culture are just as critical.
In addition to individuals coordinating local fundraisers, towns and municipalities across Maine
have also supported LifeFlight. Since the campaign started three years ago, 114 towns in Maine
have pledged financial support to LifeFlight through
an annual donation.
6
“We’re really focused on the concept of partners,”
said Thomas Judge, LifeFlight Executive Director. “I
think what’s exciting to us about SevenBar is that
their values, commitment to safety, and approach
to the future of healthcare is very aligned with ours.”
“We take great pride in our long history of safe and
innovative transport services and value our partnerships in the air medical community,” says Kim Montgomery, President at SevenBar. “It’s a privilege to
work with the LifeFlight team and we are committed
to serving the people and communities of Maine.”
community
Bill Auger was hiking with his dogs near
Rangeley when he began to have chest
pain. As soon as local paramedics arrived,
they knew Bill needed to get to a cardiac
specialist quickly—a two hour trip by car.
Working in partnership with LifeFlight,
the ambulance crew headed down the
road with Bill to meet the helicopter at a
landing zone near local landmark Smalls
Falls. LifeFlight got Bill to the cardiac unit
within 90 minutes of his first pain, which
meant a quick recovery and a return to his
active lifestyle.

M
aine’s small population spread across our rural landscape creates tightly-knit communities that are
the heart and soul of our state. These friendly communities draw people in and hold them—people
who want to build meaningful, lasting relationships, both with their neighbors and with their surroundings.
People in Maine share a unifying sense of belonging.
Our communities create a sense of belonging among the people who live
here year round, part time or just for a long weekend. Everyone belongs,
from lobstermen to lawyers, farmers to financial advisors. And even when
you’re away, you still feel a connection to Maine—you’re always a Mainer.
In 2015, LifeFlight became the grateful recipient of
its largest donation ever—three million dollars
to help purchase a third helicopter for the
people of Maine. Our generous benefactor was
Linda Bean and her Maine Lobster family.

help the organization raise the rest of the money
needed to complete the campaign.
She worked tirelessly to bring her entire community into the LifeFlight fold. She made additional
donations on behalf of each of her employees
and business partners, she promoted the campaign at her restaurants, she asked her charitable
friends to make their own donations, she even
developed and distributed her own LifeFlight supporter sticker. Each and every person that Linda
engaged now belongs to the LifeFlight family.
“LifeFlight fills an important need in the state’s
emergency medical system,” explained LifeFlight
Executive Director Thomas Judge. “This new helicopter, with ‘Next Gen’ avionics, will upgrade
all of our current capabilities and safety technology. It will also feature a special paint scheme in
appreciation for the funding support of Maine’s
iconic lobster industry.”
David and his wife, Sally, spent most
of their careers in the Boston area, but
fell in love with the people and pace of
Vinalhaven. After 20 years as summer
residents, they retired to the island
community.
When David suffered a heart attack last
fall, his island neighbors helped get him to
the LifeFlight helicopter for a fast flight to
specialized cardiac care in Lewiston.
Because he received the care he needed
so quickly, David remained in the hospital
for only a couple of days. He was able to
attend his son’s wedding and offer a toast
just a few days later.

Education and Community Outreach in FY15
LifeFlight provides many educational opportunities for Maine’s EMS providers. Courses include ground safety for local rescue agencies, communications training for
dispatchers and critical care training for clinical providers. We also share our ground safety training with firefighters, law enforcement professionals and folks in Maine’s
outdoor industry. In addition, LifeFlight makes presentations to community groups about the service we provide and our role in the state’s emergency helathcare network.

People in Maine share a sense of ownership
Living in Maine is intentional. We chose
this state because of how it makes us
feel to live here. Some of us are part of
families who have been here for generations and others of us spend only a few
weeks a year here but we all understand
the draw and feel the connection to this
great state. There are magical summers,
stunning autumns, muddy springs and
harsh winters —we love and appreciate
all the diversity that each season brings.
But it is not just the differences in the
landscape, the geography, and the elements that pull us in—it is the variety
of the people and the uniqueness in the
make-up of our neighborhoods. It is the
sense of deep commitment to community and caring for each other that is the
Maine way.
Synonymous with this connectedness is
a sense of unity. Even if we come from
vastly different walks of life our attraction
to this great state and to its people is
the deep commonality we share. It is a
club-like sense of belonging. You are included. You get it. You are a Mainer.
As we look over the list of supporters included in this report we are struck again
by the vast variety of people, businesses
and foundations that choose to help
keep our aircraft flying patients to specialty care each day. We appreciate and
need each and every one of you as the
12
need for LifeFlight services continues
to increase.
As we drive around the state to visit
and thank our supporters, and educate new friends on the value of the
service LifeFlight provides, we continue to feel like it is a family—a real
team of people who are connected to
a common good. We hear about the
same feeling of inclusivity whether we
are sitting with a donor in their kitchen
in Jackman or at a benefit reception
in Kennebunkport. We hear about
this sense of belonging when we visit
Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs across the
state and when we receive a letter from
a grateful patient.
