Winner of the 2012
Rescue Dog of the Year Contest

Gracie
Gracie was found in the woods in 2010 with her
new born pups. A very thin and frighten Gracie
was rescued in 2011 and diagnosed heartworm
positive. Gracie has found her forever home.
The 2012 Rescue Dog of the Year Contest featured seven nominees, each
with a special rescue story of their own. Although every one of the
contestants is truly a winner, only one, Gracie, eventually won the title.
Over 2,000 votes were cast for the seven contestants! Voting was brisk
and even in the final days, a winner could not be projected until the final
vote count was completed.
Gracie will be presented with her award at OS Spring Luncheon. Please
plan on joining Operation Scarlet on April 22, 2012 at the Lancaster Host
Resort to meet Gracie in person. Or would that be "in dog"?
All of the rescue kids would like to thank everyone who voted in this first
ever Rescue Dog of the Year Contest. Your participation in this event
raised over $2,000 for Scarlet's Kids still waiting for their forever homes.

Rescue Dog of the Year contest was a huge success!!!!
Many thanks for all the votes!
The response was absolutely amazing. It is just one more reminder of how awesome Scarlet’s
family is. The Rescue Dog of the Year contest had several purposes. One, of course, was to
raise money to help other Shar-Pei in need. Well, due to so many kind folks participating in
sending in votes that equaled $1 per vote - $2,060.00 was raised. That was tremendous!!!
Another purpose was to take you behind the scenes so that you could see the condition of the
dogs when they arrive. As you could see in the before and after pictures, many had medical
issues that needed immediate attention. They had a look of sadness when they arrived. But
once they received medical help and lots of love, the sad look changed. The sad, dull eyes
now had a bright spark. They became animated, alert and happy. The tails instead of
hanging down, were wagging rapidly. Each dog had a story to tell and
each one was able
to reach out to you and tug on your heartstrings. So, yes, it was a
terrific fundraiser, but
most importantly, you were shown by the pictures and the stories what Operation Scarlet
has been striving to do for the past 21 years. Rescue them; Meet their needs both physically
and mentally; Find loving homes for them and Celebrate
their new lives.
Again, many thanks for your continued support. Your ongoing help and participation keeps
Scarlet’s doors open for other Pei like Lexys, Patrick, Gracie, Abby, Allee, Sharpie and
Happy Jack. They all send you a very big WOOF of thanks.
Gracie, winner of the contest, will be appearing at Operation Scarlet’s spring luncheon on

Star
Star is a dog that personifies survivor. He arrived at OS in 2008 with old injuries, cause
unknown. Once healthy and healed, he was adopted and living the good life......on a
yacht! Star was credited with saving his adopter's life; it takes a special dog to do that! All
this came crashing down when Star was hit by a car. Due to the long recovery he faced,
the difficult decision was made to return Star to OS. Star is a very special dog that has
given everything he has to offer. Everyone at OS is hoping there's someone as special as
Star is, willing to give him a forever home that has been denied him for too long.
Daisy Duke is as perky as they come. She’s young, approximately 1-2 years
old and is a cream horse coat (or maybe a very short brush
coat?), with a puppy-like enthusiasm for life. Everyone she meets is her new
best friend and every experience is met with curiosity
and a wagging tail. In a home where she can 'grow roots' and be 'showered'
with love, Daisy will 'blossom' into a dog that will give
it all back and then some.

Eliza is a cute, petite, compact little girl. She's approximately 2 years old and is a
blue horse coat. She may be a mix but since she was a stray, no background
information is known. Eliza is small in stature but she's big on personality and
presence! She's confident, outgoing, curious and easy-going with the volunteers.
Eliza's the dog for you if you want good looks and a personality to make you smile.
Isabella is a very sweet cream horse coat. She's only 2 but has seen more of the world
than some of her 2-legged family has, having come to the US from Lithuania. It was
reported by her owner that another dog in the household had attacked her several
times, each one worse than the time before. When she arrived at OS she was still Isabella
healing from her wounds. She's fully recovered and anxious to move on to her forever
home. She's quiet and friendly with people and would be a joy to have around.

Shar-Pei, consider volunteering at the rescue or making a
donation to Operation Scarlet, Inc.

Operation Scarlet has many events scheduled
throughout the year. All of these events help to
bring people that share a love for the breed
together in a fun and informative atmosphere,
while raising the funds needed to rescue
homeless Shar-Pei.

Good News! Coco, who arrived at OS HW positive and needed to be
spayed, have entropion surgery and have a bilateral ear ablation, has been
adopted by Denise Wilson. Coco, now "Noel" was rescued with her father
Rocky after they had been abandoned in VA. She is living with another one
of Scarlet’s kids, Yogi Bear, and they are now the best of friends.
A fund for Coco's medical bills was set up in October of 2011, raising a total
of $580. Noel would like to thank Shirley Sarnowski, Cathy Tomasko, and
Steve Waldman for their donations and to everyone who donated or
purchased items at the Fall Luncheon which went to the Coco fund.

Hoping for the Grand Prize
Hi, this is Lexys! Remember me from the front page? That's right I was one of the
seven contestants in the Rescue Dog of the Year Award.
I got so many votes from so many people, thank you for your kindness and concern
for me. As you know, I was the only Pei in the contest that does not have a home. I
am still patiently waiting for my special person to visit Operation Scarlet.
I got lots of votes. In fact, I took third place. Not bad for a homeless Pei with three
legs - Don’t you think?
Please do not feel bad for me. Everyone OS is very kind and they have helped me
feel so much better. I get good meals, treats, walks, and hugs. It is a safe haven
until I find my “forever” home.
Well, I guess that is all for now. Just know that I really appreciated your votes. It
was exciting being in a contest to win an award. The only thing more exciting is
when I find my “special person”.
Truly, that will be the day that I win the "Grand Prize".

Just My Dog
He's just my dog. He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds.
He has told me more than a thousand times over that I am his reason for being -- by the way he rests against my leg,
by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile, by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him. (I
think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me).
When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another person. With him, I am all powerful.
He has taught me the meaning of devotion is loyalty itself. With him, I know the secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His
presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me ... whenever ... wherever ... in case I need him, and I expect I will, as I always have.

Happy Tails
Feb. is a special month for the Moyer family. On Feb. 5 we celebrated Flash's 7th
anniversary! He is doing fairly well but seems to have bouts of Sharpei Fever.
Tomorrow we will celebrate Gus's 10th anniversary! He is going strong. I still
remember the day when I came to OS and picked him as he was talking to me! He had
no hair, rope burns and was all bones. It didn't take long to change him into one
handsome boy! This guy is the perfect pet! He wants nothing but to eat and sleep! He
doesn't bark, growl or cause any problems.
Gus isn't one to get his picture taken much. I don't have any with the two of them
together. It has taken many years but he has turned his life around for the better.
When we first got him, he would barely get off the patio to pee. Now he is the last one
back inside. When feeding, we used to have to give him a few bites at a time. Now he
gets all his food at once. He used to avoid Don at all costs and Don can finally pet
him! I love to read the newsletter to see what is happening with OS and all the kids. I
even forward it so my mom can read it. I love seeing all the kids. Here's to more
