AMY’S GOLDEN STRAND OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2014 Bump in the Night WHATS Anyone who has moved furniture from their parent's house into INSIDE THIS theirs understands that things that go "bump in the night" might just be us tripping over the new footstool in the living room. Our Book Reports family has recently gone through the joy and pain of dividing up pg. 2 family furniture and a lifetime of memories. Part of the change involved packing a 14-foot covered trailer and driving it to Trick or Treat Texas to become the "elephant" in someone else's living room! pg 4 & 5 While we were visiting in the Dallas area we had lots of excitement. Our daughter-in-law and I sat down with a Disney planner New Treads to map out a January trip to Disney World. I was a little overpg. 7 whelmed, but the planner took the sting out of all but the cost. I can't wait to see the excitement of our 9 year old grandson durHome Study ing his first trip to Disney. pg. 8 The next morning after lots of family fun, Baby and I headed to the Destination Dallas needlework market to see what Book Club trouble we could get into. The merchandise and idea displays pg. 9 were tremendous, but the hugs and chats with vendors, buyers, teachers, and more were priceless. I am now invigorated and New Guides ready for a full Fall schedule. We are just starting new Home pg. 10 Study projects (Nights with Sheherazade) from Labors of Love. The shop has a nice Halloween treat (see page 4) for our shoppers to hopefully ward off any tricks or pranks. We have new books, new threads, new magnets, new canvases, a new Deals & Steals page on our Website, and a new Book Club coming. Have a Festive Fall, Amy, Eileen, Cindi and Khardiatou Amy’s Golden Strand 3808 Summer Avenue Memphis, TN 38122 Phone: 901.458.6109 WWW.amybunger.com Halloween Hooter Owl Canvas & Guide Cost: $366.00 10 inches Tall 18M 1 BOOK REPORTS Stitches á la Carte by Lynda Richardson Lynda hit the ball "outta the park" on this great little book. A great book filled with stitches perfect to use for Shadow Stitching. Shadow Stitching allows the painting to show through or between your stitches so your stitches almost become a shadow image of pattern on top of the subject pattern of the canvas. Although these stitches are PERFECT for backgrounds, they also fit nicely into painted design areas. Oh my but I see loads of these stitches working into my stitch guides. Some of my extra special favorites in the book are; Arabian Nights page 4, Folded Paper page 27, Hash Marks page 35, Links in a Chain page, 48, Ripples on the Pond page 67 and Wind Chimes page 89. Each section of this book is dedicated to a "gift of…" Lynda has added short messages of her life's gifts in faith, heritage, serendipity, craft, friends, love, etc… There is space and a challenge for you to add your own life's gifts to the pages. $29.95 (spiral bound 5.5ʺ x 8.5ʺ, will lay flat or fold all the way around) Break the Rules by Diane Hyde This beading book is filled with really different design ideas. There are loads of color howto photos to make interpretation of the written instructions easy. I enjoyed the creative use of everything from feathers and pinecones to silverware, keys and corks. Early on in the book there are super directions for beading, knotting, making wrapped wire loops and more. I had a hard time getting past the pages on the 8 Ball Cabochon with a corked bottle filled with tiny watch parts…yeow, some people dipped into the creative juices a little more than I did. This is a great "idea" book but also a super colossal how to do unusual techniques book. $24.95 (paperback, full-sized) Stumpwork Butterflies & Moths by Jane Nicholas I am a complete and total FAN of Jane Nicholas. I buy every book she publishes sight unseen. This book is just as satisfying as the previous books she has delivered. The book is filled with not just butterflies and moths, in all of their stages of life, but also flowers, berries, leaves, eggs and stems. You will be equipped with the instructions to work entire scenes or just a single design feature as you choose. I am enchanted by the simple technique instructions to work grape hyacinths on page 253. Simple, but lovely to use for the flower or possibly for grapes or beaded berries. A droplet of padded beads. You have to love them. $32.95 (hardback, full-sized) 2 RUMOR HAS IT …. I heard this straight from Carole Lake…there will be a new book coming in January 2015 by Carole Lake & Michael Boren. I was not able to get exact details about the book but sounded like the subject of "embellishing the canvas" would still be the focus. The NEW version of The Needlepoint Book is planned to debut in April of 2015, but I am not sure when. We are taking pre-orders for anyone interested in getting a copy of the new version with more stitches and lots of photographs of new stitched models. DEALS & STEALS PAGE ON OUR WEBSITE We have a new page on our Website called Deals & Steals. We are adding items which we may have over indulged in, discontinued items, canvases which need a new home and a few well loved items that need to move over to make room for the new. Check the page often as new items will replace sold items as space becomes available. There are no scheduled changes… they just happen…serendipity! The new colors are the same for Petite and size 13. 8 new colors in Silk Lamé Braid for 18 -- two great deep grays, Gray Stone & Pavement (my favorites), as well as more oranges, pinks, orchid and lavender. 5 new Petite Frosty Rays colors -- two lavenders, an aqua, yellow and orange. 4 new colors of Soft Sheen Fyre Werks -- 3 florescent colors of green, orange & pink along with a soft white. 3 new colors of Petite Treasure Ribbon -- Autumn colors of gold, orange and pumpkin. Did you know that Kreinik has five colors in a new 1/4ʺ width braided ribbon? Available at this time are...Silver (001HL), Gold (002HL), Red (003), Black (005) and Pearl (032). I picked up some Black #005 to experiment with…maybe on Owl Queen by JP Needlepoint. $4.25 for a 5 meter reel 7 HOMESTUDY Twists and turns meet coils, swirls and looptydoos. What's a girl to do? Just figuring out what design area is actually on top of another can be a head-scratcher. I love, love, love the colors and designs in the Nights with Sheherazade projects. Part One, Kit #1 (October) Lover's Paisley Apricot, shrimp, hot pink, magenta, grape with touches of turquoise, then kissed with silver and gold make this romantic design pop with color. Silk wrapped pearl purl and unusual sequin shapes add a bit of mystery. The metal outlines frame all of the softer lines bringing the shapes into sharp focus. I love this piece. I see turning the needlepoint into a diamond shape to inset it into a square pillow or the square flap of a purse with luscious exotic fabrics and trims. Maybe I would rather frame this piece and use it as a set of three pictures (along with the other two canvases in this series), two square and one round to hang vertically next to a doorway, or off-set on a bathroom wall. Oh boy, I better get working on Kit #2 of the Part One series. Canvas & Guide $105.00 Thread Kit $94.75 Part Two, Kit #1 (November) Sultan's Tray Kit #1 of this project will cover the deep blue background and the two burgundy woven ribbons on the sides. The dark night sky background is built with your needle. Step by step the pattern grows using several threads, most in blue but with some green glints added with metallic and beads. Close up of deep blue background 8 2015 BOOK CLUB A new kind of club comes to town. We have all participated in lots of the fun clubs filled with owls, nativities, animals, ornaments and more. We are now offering a new kind of club…AMY’S BOOK CLUB. This book club will include 6 chapters of stitches and lessons (written by Amy) to collect in a 3-hole binder (purchased separately) for 2015. The chapters will fit into a binder you can purchase from your local office supply store. You will want a 2 to 3 inch ring binder with a clear plastic pocket on the front and spine of the binder. Cover and spine inserts will be included with your first chapter to slide into the plastic sleeves for easy recognition on your book shelf. If you like to color coordinate, the cover will be in shades of red-violet with touches of soft golden orange and black (see photo above). You will receive detailed instructions on the binder and dividers needed included with the first chapter. Amy’s Book Club chapters are part stitch collection, part lessons, part tips and possibly part project in the later chapters of the year. The first chapter, It's Elementary, explains the five categories of needlepoint stitches. The types will be fully explained along with several samples of each type of stitch. As with the Home Study classes, there will be TIPS! and an occasional NOTE! included on the pages. Most stitches will include pathway numbers and suggestions on where you might want to use those stitches. Chapter Two will be dedicated to pathway and compensation to help explain why you would travel this way instead of that way and what to do when the design area ends before the stitch does (compensation). Most stitches will come with suggestions on where they might embellish a painted design, but there will also be a chapter on planning a stitch guide and how stitches can work for you in a design, or in some cases against you. There are plans for many new stitches for your use as well as some "special effects" techniques which are loads of fun. At this point my organization of the book looks like a windstorm met a paper mill. Luckily it all looks more contained and regimented in the computer. It must be my age, but I don't seem to be able to align my ideas without physically shuffling papers around (and losing half of them). There will be 6 chapters in 2015. They will be sent out every other month. The cost will be $30 or LESS per chapter. We do not have a start date yet, but are hoping this will be ready for a January or February shipment to begin the club. As with our Home Study programs you may schedule shipments to suit your schedule. 9 NEW GUIDES New Guide for Garden Party (Vicki Sawyer) By Melissa Shirley Canvas $294.00 Guide $154.50 Threads TBA 18M 14.5” x 9” New Guide for Blackbeak Pirate Hooter by JP Needlepoint New Guide for Yvonne By Lani Canvas $101.00 Guide $87.50 Threads $174.00 18M Canvas $210.00 Guide $105.00 Threads $193.80 18M 9” x 12.5” Did you know Amy has Stitch Guides for these Halloween sale canvases? http://www.amybunger.com 10 STITCH OF THE MONTH t Witch Black Ca www.amybunger.com #13 Mesh Arma dillo Witch #18 M es h Fishbone Stitch is a great little crossed stitch. The alternating slants give fun color changes in your threads and the little short stitch on top is the perfect place to add a little zing to the design. Fishbone Stitch 4 2 8 3 6 7 1 5 11 Fishbone Stitch Melissa Shirley has designed these fabulous 3-D Witches. They are available on #13 or #18 mesh. I love the idea of using Fishbone Stitch for the gray background around the bottom of her cape. The threads I have chosen will work on either #13 or #18 mesh, just change the number of strands for coverage in some cases. Stitch the gray area in Fishbone, using the Stitch of the Month diagram. Work the long stitches (diagrammed in teal) using Lorikeet #001W1 Charcoal Pastel and the short stitches (diagrammed in red) using Soft Sheen Fyre Werks FT62. The curling vines could be working in Chain Stitch and the leaves would be perfect for Satin or Random Leaf Stitch using Sampler Threads Overdyed Cotton Floss #7042 Raven. Cute, cute little baby pumpkins are ripe for working the sections in Padded Satin stitch using Sampler Threads #570 Bittersweet, then work Outline Stitch between the sections using Kreinik Size 8 Braid #021HL Copper High Luster.
