This year’s president Mr. Richard Tidball, pictured here with his wife Sue,
along with the Prince and Princess, Jack Moyse and Chelsea Connor, and the 2006
Carnival Queen Miss Hannah Winser. Both Jack and Chelsea are six years old, and
attend Hatherleigh Primary School.
Hannah along with the help of her sister Natalie and Mum (Gill) sold for the
2nd consecutive year all of the £800 worth of carnival tickets! Hannah’s first carnival
was at the age of 14 months, when she was an attendant for Natalie (Carnival Princess
in 1990) Hannah herself was the Carnival Princess in 1995 when it poured with rain!

A Message from the
103rd Carnival President
Mr. Richard Tidball
What? Me? That was the first response when I had a letter inviting
me to be President of the carnival. Not because of any insignificance of the
event but entirely for the opposite reason. The Carnival is probably the most
important thing in the Hatherleigh calendar and it really is an honour to hold
the title of President.
I am somewhat of an outsider, having been born in Sheepwash and living
there for the first eighteen years of my life.
But Hatherleigh has played a large part in my life - my first connection
was with the Cricket Club where I started playing 31 years ago and it was
through the Club that I met my wife Sue (when she was a sweet thing of
15). Many other involvements followed - The Band, Rotary Club, Chapel,
Football Club, Christmas Lights Brigade, School PTA and of course work.
Hatherleigh is the sort of place where you just have to be involved.
I would repeat the message from last years President Fay Kingsford - the
Carnival and indeed the town cannot thrive without the people’s involvement!
Many people are involved and to them I extend my thanks and best wishes.
Without the Committee and its Helpers, there would be no Carnival.
Make 2006 the best Carnival ever and strive to make each one better
and better.

A Message from the
Carnival Chairman
Welcome to Hatherleigh’s 103rd carnival. It has been a busy year preparing
and fundraising for this years tar barrels and carnival. It takes a lot of time and effort
throughout the year to comply and update regulatory and health and safety issues to
ensure the safe running of the carnival weekend.
This year our president, Queen and prince and princess are all from carnival
families. This year’s president is Mr. Richard Tidball, accompanied by his wife Sue.
They are staunch carnival supporters and have been involved with the carnival for many
years.
Our 2006 Queen is Miss Hannah Winser, Hannah sold all of the Queens draw
tickets allocated to her amounting to £800, a big thank you and well done from the
committee. Our prince and princess for this year are Jack Moyse and Chelsea Connor,
they both attend Hatherleigh primary school and we hope that this will be one of many
appearances in the carnival.
This years fundraising events have included a children’s disco, pub quiz, coffee
evening, island park party (it rained again), royalty evening, picture show and a wine
and cheese evening. All these events help with the high running costs of this spectacular
event.
You will notice from our programme that on Saturday 11th at 11.00am there will
be a two minutes silence. This will take place in the town centre just prior to the meeting
of the hunt.
On behalf of the Carnival Committee I would like to take this opportunity to
express our sadness at the loss of Mrs. Pamela Balsdon, who recently died, following
a long fight against cancer. Pam loved the Carnival, serving on the Committee for many
years and creating many beautiful, traditional crepe paper floats. In remembrance of
Pam, part of the profits from this years Carnival will be donated to the Cancer Research
Campaign.
I would like to give a big thank you to everyone for their co-operation in last
years carnival and would like to ask you again this year to respect the carnival marshals
and stewards who are there for your safety, so every one can enjoy the carnival
proceedings.
Finally I would like to thank the carnival committee and the tar barrel subcommittee for all their dedicated hard work before, during and after the carnival.
Many thanks to you the general public for your support and all the marshals and
stewards for all their hard work.
Have an enjoyable weekend,
Mark Reddaway
The Carnival Committee would like to say a big
“Thank You!”
to everyone who has supported this programme.
