A HUGE thank you on behalf of Helen and
everyone at the orphanage in Varna, Bulgaria
for your kind donations. I was overwhelmed
by the amount I collected from you all. Thank
you for the many secret parcels on my
doorstep, for those left in the Parish Church
and for those donated at pre-school. A
business in Tavistock is kindly paying for the
consignment to be sent, and Helen, a
chiropodist, is going over to measure up and
kit the 100 or so children out. The children
are aged between 3 - 15 and we were so
grateful for the huge variation of sizes and
styles donated. Along with those donated in
the Tavistock area this can really make a
difference. Helen returns in the middle of
September when I am sure I will be able to
display some photos for you to see.

Missing Cat
My cat went missing on Friday 24th June. Her
name is MJ, she is a British short haired tabby
cat and was wearing a multi-coloured stretch
type collar with a bell, she is also chipped, also
she is prone to sneezing a lot, so if anyone sees
her please try to catch her and then call me on
07734033980 or just ring and I will come
running. She lives in Cob Meadow and I am
really worried, there is a reward for the safe
return of MJ to me or the vets in Hatherleigh.
Please check your garages or sheds, thank you
for all your help Joy x

New Beginnings
September sees the end of the summer holidays, with children returning to school. At assemblies
in Hatherleigh School there will be some new faces on the front row as the youngest start their
school career. Others will have moved up to secondary school in Okehampton or maybe
Shebbear. It’s a time of new beginnings. Parents too may be feeling anxious as they watch their
children go off to their new school for the first time.
Elsewhere autumn programmes for vary activities, sports and organisations will be starting up.
In the Methodist Church it is the start of our new year. This is marked by a round of Church
Councils and Harvest Festivals. For me this will be the start of my final year in Hatherleigh as I
will move to a new post next summer.
I don’t know about you but I find many people, like me have commented on how fast the year
has gone by. Perhaps that’s because I’m getting old! When I was a child those summer days
seemed to go on forever, but these days you blink and you miss it. My five year appointment in
Hatherleigh has one more year to run, and then I will be going on to something new, like the
children. Where did those years go to?
If being Methodist Minister in Hatherleigh has taught me anything it is that although the seasons
come and go there is a continuity. As we come up to Harvest Festival we remember the cycle of
seed time and harvest. In one way the days seem to speed by, but in another everything forms
one unbroken chain. Being able to grow with the change whilst being rooted in the continuity of
things is the source of great strength.
For Christians God is in the change, but God is also the unchanging solid ground beneath our
feet. In Christ we grow, learn, develop, but in Christ we are also held, loved, secure. Whatever
September brings you, may you know God in all you do, all you experience and all you are.

medical information for your child. We ask
that children are picked up at the end of the
club by their parents or designated carer, and
that parents be willing to volunteer, where
possible, to help with the club from time to
time, although this will be no more than once
a term. There is a voluntary donation of £1

In the last session of the term, we will have a
family event for the children to present what
they have been doing to their parents/carers.

Saturday 10th September
Rev. Ruth Hansford and her son, Brendan (8

ride from Hatherleigh along the top of
Hatherleigh Moor and then down the side

cream tea (also for Devon Historic Churches

both very amateur bike riders. Brendan is still
building up his confidence and Rev. Ruth
learnt to ride going up and down the school

summer (and are much better than we were)!
Devon Historic Churches Trust gives grants
to churches in Devon (of any denomination)
to help with building projects. Their
contribution is essential in enabling us to
preserve and maintain our buildings for
current use and for future generations. We
have recently received grants for work on
both Jacobstowe and Meeth parish churches
(and more than one grant for each project) for
which we are very grateful. In order to be
able to give out these grants, Devon Historic
Churches Trust encourages people to
fundraise. They hold a ‘Ride and Stride’ day
on the second Saturday in September every
year and ask people to do something e.g.
biking or driving to various churches, to raise
money. Of the money raised, 50% goes to the
church nominated by the person raising the
money, and 50% goes to Devon Historic
Churches Trust for them to benefit churches
in need of their help.
We would be very grateful for any
sponsorship you are willing and able to give.
You can nominate which parish church you
wish to support out of Hatherleigh, Meeth,
Exbourne, Jacobstowe, and Northlew, as we
have separate forms for each of them. If you
would like to sponsor us and get us ‘on our

your name, address, postcode if you pay tax
and can gift aid, and how much you wish to
sponsor us. (Tel: 01837 810 314; Email:

Stanley was working for Henry Hunkin as a

census was taken. He joined Prince Albert`s
(Somerset Light Infantry) 6th Batt. and was sent
to France where he was involved in the
fighting at the Battle of The Somme. The
battalion then moved on and it was after the
Battle of Delville Wood that Stanley was killed
on the 4th September 1916. His name appears
on the Thiepval Memorial. Walter and Ann
Denford of Higher Street had lost two sons

12 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton SEPT 2016
“Dear Cathy Aubertin (West Devon Borough
Council, Operational Manager (Environment
Services).
As you know Hatherleigh has been taking
steps in attempting to ease the parking
problems in Town. This email is to
summarise the current position we are in and
ask for your help and advice in seeking a way
forward.
Hatherleigh undertook a large consultation
phase for our Community Plan in 2013 this
highlighted a number of key problem traffic
bottlenecks and parking problem areas.
Following on from this and as a result of an
intensity of requests to act, earlier this year a
resident survey and public meeting was held
(which we appreciated you attending). The
outcome of this was that the Town Council
have requested a Traffic Review with Devon
County Council with the intention and
likelihood of instigating some form of
parking restrictions.
One overwhelming appeal from the public
has been to make the Town's car park free.
This solution is seen as an essential aspect for
not only relieving the pressure from
overcrowded streets but one that would
receive widespread community support as it
would form an alternative solution to any
introduction of parking restrictions.
The Council feels very strongly that it would
be unacceptable and unfair to introduce
restrictions without any alternative parking
arrangements, the two go hand in hand. In fact it
is certain restrictions without a free car park will
simply move the problems into satellite streets.
You are aware there has been some discussion
on the possibility of the Town Council paying a
form of rent or lease to WDBC on account that
the area is not performing effectively as a car
park and WDBC makes a considerable financial
loss.
This brings us to the most recent
correspondence in which we were disappointed
to learn that WDBC appear to be backtracking
and are only now offering a very short term
lease of one year. We feel this is woefully
lacking on your part in appreciating the task we
are facing in seriously trying to resolve the
Towns parking problems.
We are disheartened in how to find a way
forward as we can only see a future backlash. A
major concern would be that without any longterm or concrete assurance WDBC could simply
'recall' the car park after the Town Council had
initiated parking restrictions. This would cause a
return to the current situation made worse by the
fact residents would be faced with parking
restrictions and have to pay high costs to park
their cars.
Can you please explain why you can't offer a
long-term lease? What other possible plans
could you have for this area?
Regards Clare Tyson, Hatherleigh Town
Mayor”

Sunday Rover Train
On Sunday 14th August, Okehampton
Community Transport took Hatherleigh
residents to Okehampton on their fantastic new
bus. From Okehampton we caught the Sunday
Rover train to Exeter, with some extending
their journey to Teignmouth, Exmouth and
Plymouth. The Rover is such a great service
and Okehampton station which is festooned
with flowers in hanging baskets, is picture
perfect. We had positive comments from all
the travellers and really look forward to being
able to arrange the bus as a regular service next
season.
The train at £5 return for a friendly,
comfortable ride is a bargain - if you haven't
experienced it yet, the service runs each
Sunday until September 11th. Pick up a leaflet
from the information centre.
A big thank you to everyone involved and of
course the passengers.
Cllr Claire Gladstone.

Hatherleigh Gardening Club
On Friday, September 16th we are organising a trip
to Yeo Valley Organic Gardens, formerly Holt
Farm, a garden which is at its best at this time of
year. There may be an 'add-on' garden, if I can find a
suitable candidate, but the cost is expected to be
around £20 for the coach and garden entry. There is
a cafe there for light lunches or you can take a picnic.
We will leave Hatherleigh at 9.30, returning, probably, 5.30-6.00pm.
If people could let me know asap if they would like
to go, so that I can confirm with the coach company
what size coach we will require. Thank you.

Announcements
1.We are looking for a trained dispenser with experience, hours and salary to discuss, NVQ 2 or 3. Interested in the job please call 01837 810283.
2.Flu campaign: Our first influenza clinic this year is
on Saturday the first of October from 9am, please ring
the surgery to book an appointment.
Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS,
helping to protect adults and children at risk of flu and
its complications.
People who should consider vaccination include aged
65 and over, pregnant women, children and adults
with an underlying health problem, particularly a respiratory, long-term heart and chronic conditions; children and adults with weakened immune systems.
Please contact the Centre to make an appointment or
to discuss the need of vaccination.
3.Saturday clinics:
Just a gentle reminder to our patients: Saturday clinics
are sporadic, this means that the clinics are at the criteria of the providers and there will be Saturdays when
the Health Centre is closed.
A note in the surgery (weekly basic), will indicate
availability, patients can also call the surgery to ask.
Saturday clinics are to facilitate appointments for patients that have difficulties to attend the Doctors during
the week. They are for pre-booked GP appointments
only, unfortunately we cannot accommodate drop in
clinics, emergency treatments, nurse routine appointments such as dressings, smears etc. We do not dispense prescribed medication (routine repeats) during
weekends.
4.Patients who wish to talk to the Practice Manager
18 Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Northlew and Monkokehampton SEPT 2016
regarding our last inspection are welcome to have a
meeting with Maria Fernandez, she will be happy to
accommodate.
5.We would like to encourage patients to join our
patient participation group.
PPGs are groups of active volunteer patients that
work in partnership with practice staff and GPs – this
unique partnership between patients and their practices is essential to achieving high quality and responsive care.
Hatherleigh Carnival News
We hope you are still enjoying the summer weather,
it’s difficult to start thinking about carnival but as
time flies so quickly we’re going to have to. So just a
reminder to anyone who is considering doing a decorated float (either crepe paper or any other material)
but is put off by the size of many of the other floats,
we now have new classes for smaller trailers, so go
on give it a go!
Just to remind you that the Queens Draw will be held
on September 9th in the community centre, where we
will be serving some light refreshments so please
come along and support our Queen Elizabeth and
President Mrs Jenny Phillips as they make the draw
at 8pm.
Many events (County Shows) and clubs (ORFC) sell
“vice presidents” badges and we thought the carnival
would give it a go, it’s still to be decided how much
they will cost and any ‘privileges’ they may entitle
the owner to but there will be more details in next
month’s pump.
Finally, can you, or do you know of anyone who can,
juggle, stilt walk, breathe fire or entertain crowds in
any other way and would you (or them) like to help
out on carnival night by entertaining the many wonderful people who happily stand watching the procession in any weather but appreciate some entertainment during any unforeseen delays. We have tried
four different acts over the last two years, who have
all been brilliant but we like to keep things fresh and
wondered if there were any new performers out
there. If you do know of anyone please could you
call me on 01837 811255, thank you.
We hope to see you on the 9th, don’t forget to buy
your tickets!

Weather Record
Rainfall :
July 2016 - 21. 50 mm/0. 85 ins.
( July 2015 - 109. 90 mm/4.25 ins.)
Rainfall in July was indeed well down on what
might have been expected for our area, with less
than an inch of rain - 21.50 mm - being just half
the July average of 43.40 mm. What a contrast
this was to July of last year. Although being a
very dry month, with 18 days seeing no rain and
others just a trace, sunny days were variable.
The exception to this occurred over the 17th /
18th / 19th when the temperature soared to a
high of 90 on the 19th and will be well remembered. We look forward to a repeat of this in
August, the holiday month.

Flower and Produce Show
I think we can safely say that this was another very
successful show! Opened by Denis Bater, the flowers, fruit and veg filled the tables to overflowing and
it was very encouraging to see such a good turnout
in the children's classes where, in a close contest,
Lily Bater won the cup for most points overall while
Charlotte Baulch's exquisite 'garden in a seed tray'
won best exhibit by a child.
Cups were awarded as follows: Flowers - Les Cole,
Fruit - Pat Canham, Vegetables - Les Cole, Cookery
- Netty Holwill, who also won the Entwhistle cup
for best pasty, Floral Arrangements - Monica Jones,
Photography - Christine Knights. The novelty class
for most tomatoes on a truss was won by Sandra and
Michael Moore, while the Paul Stafford memorial
cup was presented by his widow, Christina, to
Shirley Dilling for best dahlia exhibit. Top Tray
winners were: 1st and 2nd Les Cole, third Roger Gill
while Jenny Pitt won Top Vase with Audrey Reynolds second and Les Cole third. It will come as no
surprise to you to learn that the Autumn Challenge
Cup for most points in flowers, fruit and veg, and
first winner of the RHS Banksian medal, was Les
Cole. I am in awe of people who can arrange flowers
and the standard of this year's entries was exceptional, so much so that Monica Jones' stunning
'arrangement from your garden' won Best in Show!
The Garden Club would also like to thank Rise and
Shine for their very generous donation of the rosettes
that adorned the prize winning entries this year.
So very well done, not only to the cup winners but to
all exhibitors who contributed to making this event
one of the real community highlights of the Hatherleigh calendar. Thank you to them and to all the
members who turn out to help set up, dismantle and
provide and serve delicious refreshments. It's a long
and tiring day but hopefully we'll have recovered
enough to do it all again next year!!!

lovely lot--really!!
Churchyard
Anyone wandering around the churchyard on a summer day must be aware of the peace and tranquility of
the place. It is kept in a welcoming and tidy state by
the efforts of a dedicated group of "gentlemen mowers" and it is really appreciated by us all. Many
thanks, Roger and Co.

We seem to be living in noteworthy times this summer. As I write the sportsmen (O.K. and women) are

great excitement. Both events enough to send spirits

Exbourne Garden Club
On Sunday 11th September we are visiting Winsford Walled Gardens, Halwill Junction This is an
inspirational garden, full of summer colour and
interesting planting. A large mature bamboo
grove has a collection of many different varieties –
probably the largest in the Westcountry. The two
restored Victorian teak glasshouses are also a
major feature of the gardens. The walled gardens
were part of a large Victorian estate, left to ruin
after the war. Today the extensive borders are a
riot of colour. The adjacent old vegetable garden
houses the restored greenhouses and visitors can
appreciate the romantic ruins of further glasshouses that are now given over to herb and fruit
and vegetable beds. Entry cost is £5 per head.

will be held after the publication of the new Joint
Local Plan by WDBC.
The Strategic Housing and Employment Land
Availability Assessment that has been published for
consultation alongside the emerging JLP includes a
new potential site identified in Exbourne on Holebrook Lane. Councillors present discussed this issue
and all agreed the Clerk should write to the appropriate authority outlying the Parish's concerns regarding access to the site with the potential number
of vehicle movements in the future
Car Parking in Exbourne was discussed. It was
agreed that as parking will be addressed as part of
the NP, no specific action was proposed at this time.
Elements "Electronic Rave" music festival held
near Exbourne was discussed at length. A letter of
complaint was read at the meeting. It was pointed
out that the wind played a large part in carrying the
sound across to the villages. It was agreed by all
present that any future event of this type be supported, as it was reported to have been a well organised event that brought trade to the village.
The following planning applications were supported. Proposed livestock barn at Meadow View
Farm, Exbourne and work to trees in a Conservation Area at 1 Court Barton, Exbourne
Councillors agreed to submit a neutral comment to

filling Shoe Boxes for children, so please do bring
small things for children to the Church at anytime and
leave in the Shoe Box, they will all be packed and
sent off in November and will make a huge difference to some children at Christmas time. Thank you
in advance.
Dog Mess
Unfortunately the question of Dog Mess has to be
discussed again, this is becoming a very serious issue
in Exbourne, we are aware of one Dog that is loose
and fouling the pavements, but there are more incidents of other dogs fouling in different areas.
The Dog Warden is aware of our concerns and is
paying particular attention to the Village, BUT we
urge those owners to please act responsibly, pick up
your Dogs Poo and dispose of it. As reported before
this is a criminal offence and should you be caught
you will be fined. It is a small ask, and we urge you to
be aware of health issues, particularly for small children on Bikes etc, and your own public spiritedness
for others.

Community Group
Jacobstowe Community Group hosted a very successful cream teas afternoon on the 13th August.
Although funds were raised for local charities, the
object of the event was to bring the community together and to this end it was a great success. Community events such as this help to weld the community together to form habits, customs and a local culture that give people a sense of place and wellbeing.

MEETH
Thank you!
So many people contributed to the success of our dog
show and church fete that it is hard to know where to
begin to express our gratitude. In spite of morning
drizzle, lots of dogs and owners entered the various
classes and there were also many interested spectators.
The judges did their sometimes difficult job so well
and many well-deserved rosettes were handed out.
Happily the sun came out just as lunch was being
served, and so many came to enjoy lunch that we ran
out of rolls - sorry! The sun then shone brilliantly all
afternoon on a large and happy crowd of people.
Bishop Nick opened the fete in his usual friendly style
and he and Jan were presented with a buttonhole and
bouquet by Josephine and Kayna, the bouquet beautifully made by Toni almost as big as the children. The
marquee with it bunting, the various stalls full of attractive things to buy, the various games of chance and
skill kept people entertained all afternoon and the teas
were also much enjoyed, everything being eaten almost to the last crumb. It was both a very happy day
and also very successful as an amazing profit of £2301
was raised. This will help towards the expense of the
tower project as well as being part of the overall sum
taken into account at the end of the financial year to
determine the 10% we give to share between 3 charities. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came and
supported us, to Bishop Nick and his wife Jan, the
judges, to all those who contributed to the stalls and all
those who ran the dog show, stalls and games, to those
who served lunches and teas and especially to all those
who worked so hard behind the scenes before, during
and after the fete. We know ourselves to be truly
blessed by all this generous service and by the wonderful blessing of a beautiful summer afternoon which
made being outside such a pleasure.
Coffee Morning
Our coffee morning in Hatherleigh at the end of July
had been equally amazingly well supported and we
were astonished and delighted to raise £343, thank you
to everyone who came and to those who helped there.

many people and their pets joining many who have
had pets in the past or who care for animals on farms

God's creatures and our responsibilities to them.
Baptism
Another particularly happy occasion in church was the
baptism of Oliver and Ruby Cameron, their parents
had come all the way from Australia so that Oliver and
Ruby could be baptised in the church where they were
married and where their great grandmother Ruby still
worships and she played the organ for this very special
occasion. The service so well and sensitively conducted by Rev Ruth was a wonderful family occasion
for all of them and for the family of the church.
September promises to be a slightly less busy month.
There will be no tea here for the Devon Historic
Churches Trust Day on 10th September this year and
we would encourage everyone to go to Jacobstowe
where there are many nice walks and where there will
be tea for everyone. It is still possible to be sponsored

Meeth History Weekend
We shall be making preparations for our Meeth History Weekend, 30th September & 1st & 2nd October. We plan to have exhibitions in the church and

whole parish and the church here through the years. At
6pm in the church on Friday 30th September, there will
be light refreshments and at 7.30pm, Rev Ruth will
formally open the event. This will be followed by a
concert by Christine and Louise Cleverdon and John
Courtie. The church and hall will be open from 10am
to 6pm on Saturday 1st October. At 12 noon there will
be talks and the opportunity for questions on the archaeology, architecture and conservation of the church
in church. There will be a Ploughman's lunch in the
village hall from 1pm - 2pm and teas there from
3.30pm to 5pm. On Sunday 2nd October the Archdeacon of Totnes, the Venerable Douglas Dettmar will
preach at a special service to be followed by a hot lunch

Our Vision for the Future
Mission Action Plans for our Parish Churches
‘I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord,
plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a
future with hope.’
Jeremiah 29:11
Under the leadership of Bishop Robert, the Diocese of
Exeter has been thinking about the future life and ministry of our parish churches in Devon.
Our vision is to be people who together are:
 Growing in prayer
SEPT 2016

Making new disciples
Serving the people of Devon with joy
In order to realise this in our local parish
churches, we are rethinking our Mission Action
Plans, a document for each church, which sets
out what we think we can or should be doing. To
this end, we will be sending out a questionnaire at
the beginning of September to all the regular
congregations, and those on the church electoral
rolls of Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne,
Jacobstowe, and Northlew parish churches. The
questionnaire will cover the three aspects of our
church life outlined in our Diocesan Vision. It
will ask people to pray and consider over a few
weeks what they think the priorities of their
church should be. Each PCC will then collate this
information into a plan for their own church and
ask congregation and church electoral roll mem-

A Boxful of Joy!
Make a Child’s Christmas Special
The churches in Okehampton Deanery have decided
this year to support Operation Christmas Child as their
Deanery charity. Run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child asks people to
fill shoeboxes with suitable gifts for children aged 2-4, 5
-9, or 10-14 years, which they then deliver to needy
children around the world at Christmas to show them
God’s love in a visible way. Each child receives their
shoebox as an unconditional gift of love, based on need,
regardless of their background or religion. Last year
900,008 shoeboxes were sent from the UK to 14 different countries, whilst globally 11,213,010 shoeboxes
were sent to children in over 100 countries.
We will be packing shoeboxes at Doodlebugs in Northlew on Sat. 24th Sept., at Messy Meeth Monkeys in
Meeth, and at Jammie Dodgers in Exbourne on Sat. 8th
Oct., and at Hatherleigh Big Story After-School Club
on Mon. 31st Oct. in order to deliver our shoeboxes to
our local collection centre at the beginning of November. All helpers (whatever age) are welcome to join in
these events.
We would be grateful for donations of shoeboxes, and
items to include in the shoeboxes. We will be concentrating on the 2-4 and 5-9 age groups. Details of suitable
(and unsuitable) items are available at www.samaritanspurse.org.uk/occ or from Rev. Ruth Hansford (Tel:
01837 810 314). If you, your family, or your group
would like to do your own shoebox, please ensure that
they are finished for the beginning of November. They
can either be delivered to Rev. Ruth Hansford (The
Rectory, Hatherleigh EX20 3JY) or to our local collection centre (details to follow in the October Pump).
Thank you for your support!
