CITY OF SANDUSKY RECREATION DEPARTMENT CITY OF SANDUSKY PUBLIC SERVICES The year 2015 was a watershed year for the City of Sandusky and we are proud of the progress made. With new resources from the passage of Issue 8 which collaboratively provided a modest raise in both admissions and income taxes, the city’s budget was stabilized and resources made available for our safety, infrastructure, economy and housing stock. The city’s Strategic and Comprehensive Plans were updated for the first time in a decade defining what we will do and how we will do it. Over 2,000 Sandusky citizens and stakeholders crafted a bold yet pragmatic vision for our community. The goal of this “Bicentennial Vision” involves creating a more vibrant, connected, livable and celebrated city that will continue to thrive as a destination for the next 200 years. Our park spaces and recreational activities enhance one’s physical and mental well being. Being located directly along Sandusky Bay, our waterfront amenities make us unique. Take a moment to relax and enjoy these beautiful spaces with your friends and family, and create your own happy memories. Eric L. Wobser, City Manager SANDUSKY CITY COMMISSION Dennis E. Murray, Jr., President Richard R. Brady, Vice President Nikki Lloyd Greg Lockhart C. Wesley Poole Naomi R. Twine Dave Waddington Eric L. Wobser City Manager Dennis E. Murray, Jr., President City Commission Dennis E. Murray, Jr., President City Commission Hello Sandusky residents, please let the Public Services Department welcome you to 2016! A great year lies ahead of us, full of events, gatherings and activities that will be sure to keep you and your family coming back for more. Our Recreation staff, led by Superintendent Victoria Kurt, has a wonderful line-up and schedule laid out for this season and we are anxious to get started. Let us first look back at some highlights of 2015. Our departments were busy with projects from parks and tree’s to the resurfacing of streets. We started out the year by removing 84 dead trees in the boulevards around town. Lions Parks saw a new playground and ADA swing set installed, adding to an already wonderful place to spend your day. New trash cans began to be installed in the downtown area, including Washington Park. Finally we ended our year by resurfacing Pierce St., Grant St. and portions of Central and Shelby Streets. Moving forward to this year and beyond, we will continue to remove trees, plant trees in parks and boulevards through our GLRI grant, fix streets and maintain our park system. Shoreline Park has a new playground being installed which will feature ADA swings and swing set, which we previously did not have at this location. This is just the beginning as we will be improving playgrounds and parks throughout the city over the next several years. I encourage you to get out and enjoy all this city has to offer. Walk to the parks or bike to the water and take in the views of the Sandusky Bay. Be active and join us on this adventure into the future of Sandusky. I am excited to see the changes and will be around to watch this city grow. I hope that you join me. Summer Safari is hosted at Sandusky Middle School in air-conditioned rooms Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Busing and lunch are provided and classes are free. Students choose a Safari where they will be able to apply skills in real activities, participate in a field experience, and share what they have learned with each other and with an audience at the Friday afternoon Project Based Learning Fair. Sign up will be from April 4th - May 2nd. Fliers will be sent home with students and information can also be found at www.scs-k12.net. Last year there were over 20 different Safari Workshops and over 400 registered students! Programming robots, blasting off rockets, studying matter using ice cream, dissecting sharks, and creating CO2 dragsters, were just a few of the workshops we have had! We look forward to another exciting two weeks of learning!
