So, in conjunction with the celebration of the Tzu Chi Teachers’ Association and Tzu Ching anniversary, it is hoped that the Tzu Chi educational philosophy can be upheld and promoted extensively. Naivety and Decent Countenance Lecture by Dharma Master Cheng Yen Translated by K.K.Wong A retired school teacher from the Tzu Chi Teachers’ Association began dedicating most of her time in volunteering works since from her youthful years and making full use of Jing-si Aphorisms to train her pupils with healthy habits and decent countenance. Time changed and the general morality of the Taiwanese local community declined. Hence, the educating of the younger generation has never been easy. So, the Tzu Chi Teachers’ Association was set up more than two decades ago to cater for this shortcoming, in the hope to protect the education sector as well as to nurture future pillars of the society. Jing-si Aphorisms steers towards righteous path It was the golden era for Taiwan in the Nineteen Nineties as its economy was TZU CHI 31 01 M aster’s Teaching accelerating with tremendous speed. However, the flourishing of negative influences like the trading of shares, the scramble for betting tickets and the deteriorating of morality among students in schools all accounted for the need to put an immediate check to these malpractices. In 1992, Tzu Chi Teachers’ Association was formally set up with an ultimate aim to disseminate the teachings of Jing-si Aphorisms in molding the students’ characters. The Tzu Chi teachers had always been dedicated and many of them were devoted in volunteering work since from a very young age until their retirement – they should, indeed, be complimented for “trading their youthfulness” in return for the benefit of their students. Apart from Taiwan, these Tzu Chi teachers had also left traces of Tzu Chi educational foot prints around the globe, sowing seeds of loving kindness and selflessness, which have now matured into tall, healthy Bodhi trees of great compassion. Sowing seeds of loving kindness The Tzu Chi teachers from Tainan have mobilized their taskforces over to Sichuan, China, Malaysia and the US in humanistic cultural interactions and sharing of the Tzu Chi educational spirit with the locals. After the sharing, many locals were touched by this true Tzu Chi spirit and were raring to join Tzu Chi as volunteers. As far as domestic efforts were concerned, students from Tainan Tzu Chi High School and Hualien Tzu Chi University had launched a ‘youth-guiding-youth’ program, leading local young people to engage themselves in community works. Master Cheng Yen said: As I used to mention “Immeasurable numbers originates from a single seed” therefore, a seed can also generate into immeasurable seeds. In this way, these seeds of loving kindness can evidently evoke awareness among the younger generations to make use their time wisely and not wasting hours and hours of precious time on video games. If the objectives of caring and interactions are not achieved, education will only help to increase the students’ knowledge but not their wisdom. In Colorado in the US, a doctoral student stormed a movie theatre and sprayed shots from his automatic artillery, killing 12 and wounded scores of others. The US President who was engaged in his presidential run for a consecutive 02 2012 • 9 term of office, immediately stop his campaigning and held half-mast mourning. Evidently, this incident was deemed a serious human tragedy in American history. What happened to this young man who has received such a high education? He has an ailing state of mind. What have gone wrong in the educational system of today and what instigated him to take away the lives of so many innocent people? There is one answer – only if we are willing to return to our inherent pure nature and unconditional loving kindness. Good conduct speaks louder than words Purification of the human mind is the only way to regulate and remedy social illness. So, in conjunction with the celebration of the Tzu Chi Teachers’ Association and Tzu Ching anniversary, it is hoped that the Tzu Chi educational philosophy can be upheld and promoted extensively. As far as Tzu Chi’s educational influence in China is concerned, Taiwanese business entrepreneur volunteers have been providing local underprivileged students with schooling opportunities and educating them about the “bamboo coin bank era”, cultivating their selfless nature and academic knowledge. For the past decades, these volunteers treated the children like their own off-springs and taught them about the virtues of thriftiness. So they have learnt to make use of tooth-pick boxes as mini coin banks and save as much as RMB0.10 per day. Under the careful guidance of the Tzu Chi volunteers, talents were nurtured through loving kindness and daily practice. With the extensive propagating of great love, it is hoped that the human minds can be cleansed and good blessings be bestowed upon the global community. Empty Your Spiritual Trash from Within By David Liu • Translated by Max Siew Y ears ago, I took a trip home to Taiwan. One day, when I switched on the TV, I chanced upon a Korean sitcom. Part of the story recounted about an office worker who was not on good terms with his colleagues. This had been going on for some time and eventually one night he vents his frustration on his working place, vandalizing office equipments and leaving behind trails of destruction. The next morning, all the office workers and the boss were informed by the security guard who the real culprit was. The workers urged the boss to lodge a police report on the offender but the boss turned down this request and said plainly, “household trash should be emptied from within (the home).” He then told his staff to restore the office back to its original state. Nevertheless, the phrase “household trash should be emptied from within (the home)” does not sound uncommon, it is full of wisdom. If we were to think carefully, we might also find that “dirt accumulated in our minds” should likewise be “cleared from within”. TZU CHI 31 05 t zu Chi in Perspective We often blame external factors for the accumulation of our “spiritual trash”. We also tend to focus on external factors rather than believing that these stressful thoughts are not caused by others or circumstantial factors but by ourselves. Despite knowing that neither the Dharma and Buddha nor Mara [Sanskrit word for demon] exists outside of our minds, and that everything is just the creation of the mind, and yet when stressful thoughts arise, we feel completely at a loss. So, it is not that simple to put into practice what we have learned. This requires mental training and discernment. In Buddhism, we talk about “turning knowledge into wisdom” and “following closely according to our wisdom and not knowledge”. This is to ensure that we actually gain useful insights into our understanding of things. So, the emphasis is on “wisdom” and not “knowledge”. There is no denying that knowledge is important, but that we need to reach further to convert it into wisdom. Knowledge is something we accumulated from the outside while wisdom is gained when putting knowledge into practice and making it relevant in our lives. So wisdom is something that comes from within us. To gain wisdom you need to be quick-witted, that is to say that your perception is extremely strong and you must also have a strong discerning power – knowing exactly what is right and wrong. 06 2012 • 9 The ability to discern gives rise to perfect enlightenment and wisdom (Sanskrit: Samyak Sambodhi 正覺 ) which in turn gives rise to right thought. Samyak Sambodhi enables us to see things as they really are. Understanding the truth about things rather than simply seeing things as they appear to be. Right Thought is a vital element of wisdom. It has an immense influence on our conduct. Right thought means overcoming craving and ill-will. When evil thoughts are aroused, the best way to overcome them is through Samyak Sambodhi. In fact, there is a saying that goes: “The arousal of an evil thought is no cause for alarm, but the delay in countering it with wisdom is definitely something to worry about”. So once Samyak Sambodhi and our Right Thought are aroused, knowledge will be converted into wisdom, an apparent enhancement which would then be applicable in our daily lives. What we see and hear over a long period of time might influence our thinking, though subtly. A constant exposure to unwholesome views will severely undermine our moral values even without our awareness. This could be something alarming! Fallacies are common in our society, so we must always exercise care not to be misguided by them. Even a well-learned and scholastic person, who might also be a convincing speaker and expert in many areas, is not the right person we are looking for, if he is not truly enlightened. An enlightened preacher must not only be well versed in the Dharma, but should also be charismatic and compassionate so that he can spread the Dharma teachings and lead people to true salvation. The person who fits in this description is one who is very calm, wise, and enlightened. TZU CHI 31 07 t zu Chi in Perspective An in-depth study of Buddhism may produce many theorists and thinkers, but this study is irrelevant to spiritual liberation. If we want to break free from stressful thoughts or sufferings or even to escape Samsara (i.e. to break the cycle of death and rebirth), we must study and practice the Dharma diligently to attain enlightenment. Nobody can gain liberation on our behalf; not even the Buddha can attain enlightenment for us. But the Buddha has indicated us a valuable insight into the realization of enlightenment. They are: 1. The nature of suffering (Sanskrit : Dukkha 苦 ) 2. Origin of suffering ( Samudaya 集) 3. Cease suffering (Nirodha 滅) 4. The correct way (Magga 道) to cease suffering. If we put our body and mind in Satipattana (foundation of mindfulness 四念處) and practice cultivation through “faith, understanding, practice and enlightenment”, then we can find the root causes of our sorrow, the overcoming of sorrow, the ceasing of suffering and the way to the path of truth. For “faith and understanding”, we must truly commit ourselves to have full trust in Buddhist sutras; and, for “practice and enlightenment” we need to be actively engaged in community works and mix around with everyone. So, these two practices have to be carried out simultaneously so that we can be bestowed with blessings of the Triple Gems and wisdom. Trash can be found in every household for recycling purposes. We sort out recyclables from the trash and put them into respective bins shortly before the garbage truck makes its rounds. We do this on a regular basis so as to keep the house spic and span and the environment clean. The same is true of the dirt that accumulates in our minds. When our body gets dirty we cleanse it with water, and when our minds are deluded, we cleanse it with Dharma water. To attain purity of mind, we need to integrate the concept of “Learning while doing” and “Doing while learning” into our daily life over a long period of time. 08 2012 • 9 “Learning while doing” is acquiring knowledge and at the same time putting it into full use. Whereas, “Doing while learning” is revising what you have learned in the past and putting it into practice again so that you might learn something new through your “trial and error”. What is the real significance of seeking refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha (monastic community)? The Triple Gems – Buddha, Dharma and Sangha – are affinities that provide us an opportunity to study and practice Buddhism. However, we should not be led blindly. The Triple Gems – Buddha, Dharma and Sangha – help us to gain an insight into our self-adherent Buddha nature. That is why when we seek refuge in the Triple Gems, we commit ourselves from within and not from the outside. The Buddha did not wish to see his disciples being blindly led and adopt an erroneous view of what “taking refuge in the triple gem” is all about. He cautioned his disciples that they should rely on wisdom for discernment and not to follow blindly, otherwise this might lead them to hell. We need to cultivate and nurture the right view so that over time, it is deeply rooted in our minds. This is a very effective way in emptying spiritual trash accumulated in our minds. TZU CHI 31 09 Befriend Your Kids to see their needs It is not uncommon for youngsters to be rebellious because they yearn for freedom, as their parents are always in control. However, would it be better if we interact with our kids just like close friends? And, sharing with them the joy and laughter or discussing the latest models in hi-tech handheld series, so that they could really feel their presence is being appreciated and not under surveillance. Compiled by Kelvin Ting Kie Mei Translated by K. K. Wong Photographs by Tzu Chi Documentary Team Source: The World of Tzu Chi (Chinese - 148) FEATURE 10 2012 • 9 A re you aware that your kids are turning arrogant, disobedient and bullying or rude to you, like speaking vulgar words and fond of fighting? As parents, do you realize that these ill consequences could be the result of over-pampering? Children born after the Nineteen Eighties are considered lucky as they had never experienced any hardship before. Hence, termed as the “over-pampered” lot or the strawberry generation, they generally do not have a sense of responsibility and seem to be fragile and cannot probably stand a blow. As a result of this, these elegantly clad youngsters are never prepared to face adversities later on in life. The role of parents has become increasingly difficult nowadays as the generation gap between them and their children widens. So, what on earth do these children really want? Where does the children’s stress come from? In recent years, everyone is trying to show extra care to a child’s EQ (emotional intelligence) because this has always been a neglected issue as far as stress is concerned. A child with high EQ is able to cushion off stress without much frustration; while one who cannot cope with stress will suffer badly. Those were the days when we, as the older generations, used to play by the brooks, catching butterflies and tiny fish. So, basing on this experience, why should we pressure our kids into doing things that may upset them and their wonderful childhood years? Why not just make things simple so that they can enjoy every moment of their childhood. In fact, if a child’s EQ is not closely monitored by parents, some physiological and psychological problems might surface one day. Hence, Dharma Master Cheng Yen used to stress on the virtues of filial piety in education. TZU CHI 31 11 f eature Master Cheng Yen: “Education cannot be separated from filial piety” There was someone who asked the Master: “My kid is too naughty, what should I do?” The Master replied: “It doesn’t matter as long as your child is healthy.” Another person asked: “My kid is poor in his studies, so what should I do?” The Master replied: “You ought to be grateful for having a kid.” So, all these answers are very practical and simple parent-child relations. According to the Master, three factors which play an important part in moulding a child’s future are – family, school and society. In the last two decades, teachers were deemed highly respected persons and the students used to be very obedient and did whatever was told. However, time has changed. The students nowadays cannot take punishment or else they might retaliate. Steering students towards a brighter future The Master said, “All teachers should use great love to nurture their students so that they are highly respected by the children. In this era, there is no way to put strict rules into practice – only sensitivity and mutual respect will cope well with 12 2012 • 9 Befriend Your Kids to see their needs the youngsters. So, teachers should be role models to students by being sincere, tolerant and caring to them. As a result of this, the students are more willing to listen and accept useful advices.” Apart from this, the Master commented: “Teachers should be more professional and selfless in contributing. They should also disseminate the virtues of filial piety to their students so that they are more considerate and kind towards their parents.” In the fast moving modern society of today, we can see that almost every kid is engaged in games or constantly relaying short messages with hand-held electronic products; putting on their best branded attires and always under the escorted of a maid or babysitter – these materialistic children are, indeed, badly deprived of parental love. TZU CHI 31 13 f eature Dr. Eddie Chan: Parents emphasize more on academic results than moral values “Parents nowadays are only concerned about the academic results of their children. As long as their kids can obtain good results, they are spared from doing house chores like tidying the living room and other basic tasks. So, they are in a way spoilt and have become too dependent and lazy.” That was the remark thrown by known paediatrician Dr. Eddie Chan. He elaborated that most children are living within the high expectations of their parents or teachers and are not doing things that they wanted to achieve. They have been over-pampered since childhood, as every single meal is always readily served on the dining table and every daily necessity is never lacking. As a result of this, these children are not independent and have not found a true purpose or direction in life. Dr. Eddie said that as the parents have been pampering their children, these youngsters are definitely too weak to absorb stress or setback. “Most parents believed that it is their duty to plan a smooth sailing future for their kids, not knowing that they are, in fact, depriving them of the chance to tackle adversities and to solve them.” 14 2012 • 9 Befriend Your Kids to see their needs As the parent-child divide widens, the children tend not to confide in their parents and instead choose to talk to friends or classmates. Moreover, due to work commitment, most parents would resort fulfilling their children’s materialistic demands and neglecting their spiritual development. As a matter of course, the children’s materialistic urge grows stronger each day. In fact, what most modern parents have overlooked is the instilling of humanistic approach and moral values in their children. Instead, they are too steadfast and insisted on the good academic results of their kids rather than their spiritual well-being. Dr. Eddie said: “Parents should learn to self-reflect – whenever your kids encounter problems, do not criticize them harshly; ask yourself whether you are also partly responsible for it! Education should always work together with caring love; without love, the children will not learn to appreciate the value of life and understand the true purpose in life.” TZU CHI 31 15 f eature Tan Son Hong: Allow room for patching up relations It is not uncommon for youngsters to be rebellious because they yearn for freedom, as their parents are always in control. However, would it be better if we interact with our kids just like close friends? And, sharing with them the joy and laughter or discussing the latest models in hi-tech hand-held series, so that they could really feel that their presence is being appreciated and not under surveillance. Tzu Chi volunteer Tan Son Hong said that his relations with his children improved greatly when he abandoned his previous stern outlook and switched to a softer and approachable tone. He believed it was Tzu Chi which changed his harsh approaches. So, let’s hear what he has to share with us. In the past, Tzu Chi Batu Caves volunteer, Tan Son Hong used to put on a stern face in front of his children. This indirectly led to strained relationships between him and his kids. However, Master Cheng Yen’s Aphorism: “Why not transform yourself before requesting others to do the same?” did wonders for Son Hong. “Ever since changing my approaches, I used to interact with my children 16 2012 • 9 Befriend Your Kids to see their needs just like good friends. Once, when I rested my arms on my kid, tears suddenly welled in his eyes. I was so touched and realized that this little interaction wonderfully patched up tense relationship.” Tan Son Hong believed that we should not emulate the conventional educating method and use them on our kids because this might not work in the modern era. The only effective way to enhance good interactions with our kids is to care for them and love them in an appropriate manner by not over-pampering. The school’s role: cultivate self-confidence in students Once, there were practically few examinations in schools. Those were the days when the childhood entertainment was restricted to playing hide-and-seek in the nearby woods and catching tiny fish in the brooks. At home, every child had a share of house chore to do, like picking up firewood and cutting firewood or other tough jobs. However, the children nowadays used to enjoy a lot – always travelling in an air-conditioned car but not knowing how to hold a broom properly to sweep the floor and prefer staying in an air-conditioned room and shying away from outdoor activities. At school, these poor kids were surrounded by piles of class-work and homework and have to prepare for endless examinations. Hence, the main objective of a student nowadays is to pass all school examinations and get good scores. In view of these, known educationist and writer Yulduz has some useful points to share with us. TZU CHI 31 17 f eature Yulduz: Education can change the world Known educationist-cum-writer, Yulduz opined that education can be classified into two categories – school education and family education. A few decades ago, when proper education was not easily accessible, family education played an important role in shaping a child’s basic learning foundation and parents naturally became immediate teachers. However, in the modern society of today, when most parents are always on the move and busily engaged in meetings and business trips, the family education tradition has long been neglected, while the educating role of their children is fully entrusted to school teachers. “Every child has the potential to excel, so don’t blame them for not studying hard. It is always necessary for us to review our methods of teaching,” remarked Yulduz. She said that basically, every child has certain areas of expertise which are unnoticed by us. According to specialists, a human’s intelligence is divided into seven types – linguistic intelligence, mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, musical intelligence, physical movement intelligence, interpersonal intelligence and inherent intelligence. So, parents should try to find out what their child is good at or interested in before making the next move. Yulduz said that every child needs parental love and care which is irreplaceable under all circumstances – grandpa, grandma or teachers can never be substitutes to shower parental love. As such, she advises all parents to treasure and enjoy quality time with their children. 18 2012 • 9 Befriend Your Kids to see their needs The modern kids: Please accept our views More often than not, parents have misinterpreted their children’s wishes and thought that money can buy parental love and solve all problems. However, they have totally neglected the spiritual development and inner world of their children. In fact, every child needs due attention, love and care from parents. Apart from that, most children dislike being shouted at by parents because they felt that they are not being appreciated or respected. Parents should be aware that what they think might not necessarily represent their children’s wishes. If they keep on ignoring their children’s feelings and needs and over-pampering them, then they are actually delaying the mental development of their kids and made them too dependent on others. Eventually, these children are going to become the “forever immature” lot. TZU CHI 31 41 d harma Lecture by Dharma Master Cheng Yen THE FOUR CONSIDERATIONS • Consider the body as impure • Consider the senses as sources of suffering • Consider the mind as impermanent and ever-changing • Consider all existence as impermanent Consider the body as impure The great treasure of wisdom The Buddha once told a story. There was an old man who was very poor. All his life, he relied on his ax to chop firewood for a living. One day a young merchant from abroad saw that ax and his eyes suddenly sparkled, because he knew that this was no ordinary ax even though it had been worn out from years of use. Recognizing its value, he asked the old man, “Sir, will you sell your ax to me? “No way,” replied the old man. “I have depended on it my whole life to cut firewood for a living.” “How about if I trade 4,000 feet of silk satin for it?” asked the young merchant. Thinking that the young man was making fun of him, the old man ignored him. The merchant thought his offer was too low. “If it isn’t enough, then I’II offer you 8,000 feet.” 42 2012 • 9 The old man was fuming with anger. “Didn’t you see I’m busy? You ‘re wasting my time! Stop fooling around with me!” Seeing that the old man was so angry, the young man thought that his offer was still too low. “How about 20,000 feet?” When he saw that the young man was so earnest, the old man began to believe that his worn out ax was indeed worth 20,000 feet of expensive cloth. He suddenly felt very sad and he started to cry. The young merchant thought that the old man was reluctant to part with that old ax, and comforted him. “Old man, please don’t cry. If you think the price is still too low, I would like to double it and make it 40,000 feet.” “Too much, it’s indeed too much,” the old man uttered between sobs. “It’s just that for the past years I didn’t know I have a treasure and kept on using it to chop firewood. If I had known how precious it is, I would have taken good care of it. Then, it could have been worthed two or three times more than what you’ve offered me, or it might have even been a unique treasure. Then, I would be a rich man now, I’m crying because of my ignorance.” Turn impurity into purity After finishing this story, the Buddha told his disciples that he wanted them to know that everyone has a bountiful treasure of wisdom within them, but that many people are wasting it. Instead, They are constantly seeking the satisfaction of the Five Desires of wealth, sex, prestige, food and laziness. Life in this world is only a few decades long, and it’s a pity that most people kill time and while away their lives in such ways? The Buddha further observed that the young merchant could tell at first sight that the ax was a valuable asset; whereas the old man, who had the axe by his side all his life, was completely unaware of its existence and to cherish it. The Buddha saw and understood the ultimate truth of the universe and TZU CHI 31 43 d harma enlightened people with his teachings. When he first started teaching his doctrines, his methods were later documented in the Avatamsaka Sutra. However, due to people’s delusion and ignorance, the Buddha had to develop four additional levels of teachings to make it acceptable to his audiences. He introduced Buddhism like a wise guru, slowly guiding his students step by step in learning. However, there were still many who could not understand or appreciate his message, and so they remained hesitant and steadfast by wasting a lot of their time. Our lives are wasted if we do nothing for the benefit of others. At this point, most of us were not prepared to take advantage of the treasure in our hands and strived for the good of mankind. The Buddha advised us to be seriously mindful of ourselves. Although our physical bodies are unclean, we all possess the most valuable treasure within us – the inherent wisdom that is hidden inside of you and me. Do not be carried away by the ego “I” and waste precious time in pursuit of desires for this unclean body. We should make use of this physical self as an instrument to realize the ultimate truth of the universe. After all, spiritual cultivation requires the full use of this physical body too. If we can promptly take advantage of our physical body, we may eventually attain a high level of wisdom. Therefore, the objective of observing the purity of our bodies is to keep them from obstructing our pursuit of wholesome spiritual cultivation. In other words, we should overcome this obstacle to achieve purity of mind in the cultivation of Buddhahood. Consider the senses as sources of suffering We often hear people complaining about their suffering. If there were no sufferings, Sakyamuni Buddha would not have come into this world. He appeared because of the sufferings in this world. He wanted to deliver people from their agonies, so he left home in pursuit of his spiritual cultivation. He eventually attained enlightenment and went around helping people with his 44 2012 • 9 wholesome understanding of the universe. In the past, many people knew that life was filled with sufferings, but they did not actually know the sources of the suffering. They could not even name the different kinds of suffering, let alone analyze their causes. After Sakyamuni Buddha found the sources of suffering and clarified their causes, he was able to teach people with his extraordinary wisdom. Basically, there are three kinds of sensations: suffering, happiness and equipoise (neither happiness nor suffering). If we divide the sensations narrowly, we may also include worry and joy. Suffering is a type of feeling, and we can only realize what it is about when we experience it. Most people tend to think that when things go their way, it is happiness, and when things do not go their way, it is suffering. Then, how many happy things do you want to have in this world? There is a Chinese saying: “Eight or nine out of ten things in this world do not always happen the way you wanted.” This means that most events that happen around us are usually not in our favour. When favorable circumstances come to an end, most people would complain because they have to face the unfavourable circumstances. A person’s desires are like a bucket with a hole; water will leak continuously from it, even if more water is added to the bucket. Likewise, humans can never be satisfied. They are constantly unhappy because of their endless desires. We live in an affluent society, but would still experience suffering at least three times each day - the hunger before each meal. After we have had breakfast, we will become hungry again by noon. After lunch, we will be hungry again by night fall. Thus, there are at least three times every day when we are restless. Some people have five or six meals a day, or even late night snacks before going to bed! A person can simply be restless because of want for food, so there is a Chinese saying: “There will come a time when the sea level will cease to rise, but the gap under your nose is however bottomless.” No matter how much you eat, your mouth will never be satisfied. TZU CHI 31 45 M aster Cheng Yen Tells Stories Killing the Tiger In our daily conduct, we must humble ourselves and be courteous to others. In this way, we will avoid hindrances. I n the Buddha’s time, there was a monk in the sangha who always flaunted his nobility. “No one comes from a better background than I do,” he said. “My family is the richest in the country. Before I became a monk, I ate the best food, wore the best clothes and used the best things. Even the things my servant used were imported…” Every time this monk came back from begging for alms, he looked at the coarse food in his bowl and said with a sigh, “What fine food I had in the past! Look at the food I have now.” Hearing such complains day after day, the other monks began to grumble about him. When the Buddha heard about this, he told the sangha the story of this monk. This monk had the same habit of being arrogant a long, long time ago in a previous life. He used to be a weaver, tall and handsome. At that time, there was a very clever craftsman who not only made very good bows and arrows but was also a first class marksman. In every marksmanship contest, he was 46 2012 • 9 the champion. Versatile as he was, he wanted to contribute to his country. Unfortunately he was very short and not impressive as far as appearances went, and he was afraid the king would look down on him. Therefore he wanted to find a tall, handsome young man to visit the king with him. Finally, he found the weaver. “Let’s go to see the king together,” he said. “You tell him that you’re a good marksman and I’m your servant. If the king employs us, then we’ll never have to worry again.” The weaver thought it was indeed a very good opportunity, so he agreed. They went to the palace to see the king, who was pleased to see them and offered them a generous stipend, there-after they lived a very comfortable life. Not longer after, the news began to circulate that a tiger had been seen near the main road leading to the city gate and that it had already killed several people. The king summoned the weaver and told him to get rid of the tiger. Assigned such a dangerous mission, the weaver was worried that his true identity might be disclosed. He discussed with his servant what to do. “Don’t be frightened,” the craftsman said to the weaver. “You must keep calm. First of all, you have to announce the exact time that you are going to go hunt the tiger. When the time comes, people will come with bows and arrows to help. Then you must go to the haunt of the tiger and let it follow you to where all the people are gathered. When it does, hide behind a bush. Out of fear, all the people will shoot the tiger with their bows and arrows. When the tiger has been shot, stand up with a rope in your hand and tell everyone that you had intended to catch the tiger alive. Demand that the person who rashly killed the tiger come forward. I am sure no one will dare to admit it. Then you can carry the dead tiger to the king, who will certainly be very happy and bestow upon you a handsome award.” The weaver did exactly what his servant told him to do so. Sure enough, the tiger was shot to death and the king gave the weaver a great deal of treasure. After some time, a wild ox appeared and also threatened the people. Using the same method as for the tiger, the weaver got rid of the wild ox. Again the king gave him many rewards and trusted him all the more. Having eliminated both the tiger and the wild ox and won the trust of the TZU CHI 31 47 M aster Cheng Yen Tells Stories king, the weaver became arrogant and no longer respected the craftsman. “Don’t forget, you are my servant. You are supposed to serve me.” The craftsman could only wait patiently. Another period of time passed until one day the neighbouring counties suddenly ganged up to attack this country. The first person to come to the king’s mind was the weaver. “Since you are such an outstanding marksman, I order you to fight the first battle.” The weaver was half-pleased and half-worried, because if he won the battle he would be promoted to a higher position and gain both fame and wealth, but if he lost he would lost everything. The closer the enemy forces drew, the more fearful the weaver became. Worried about what he might do, his servant followed him closely. On his departure, the weaver sat on the back of an elephant, looking very impressive. But when the enemy arrived, he was so scared that he wet his pants and almost fell off the elephant’s back. His servant told tied him to the elephant with a rope and said, “When you were in power, you were so flushed with pride! Now in the face of the enemy you are so frightened. How pathetic! Go back and clean yourself up and leave the enemy to me.” So the weaver went back, leaving his short servant to fight the battle. With his excellent marksmanship and tactical skill, the craftsman quickly led the army to victory. Returning from the battlefield, the craftsman went to the king under his true identity. The king was very happy, but he also regretted that such an outstanding man had been neglected for such a long time just because he felt inferior for being short. The king put him in command of his army. After the battle, the weaver lost all his arrogance. The Buddha continued, “And guess what? This monk used to be that weaver. He was born into a low caste and feels inferior. Being arrogant is his way of concealing his inferiority complex.” Whether in studying Buddhism or getting along with other people, you must humble yourselves and treat others with respect. Always be modest. If you are filled with arrogant and pride, you will encounter many obstacles on the road of spiritual cultivation and in life. 48 2012 • 9 Question & Answer Reflection in Serenity By Dharma Master Cheng Yen Translated by K. K. Wong Q: The obligation of students is to study hard, but how do you rate their performance in academic pursuit? A: A good result might mean excellent performance in studies. However, the conduct of a student is even more important than his performance. In fact, a well behaved student can at the same time study hard. So, if he or she is self-motivated and values time, there is no way he or she can be weak in studies. Q: If my children are disobedient and lost interest in their studies, what should I do? A: Parents should carry out their due responsibilities well but have no rights to restrict the developments of their children. They should cultivate good karmas for their children and care about all sentient beings with a mother’s loving-kindness. Besides, they should also educate their children with the wisdom of a Bodhisattva and never to worry too much about their children, as this might indirectly accumulate bad karmas for their children. Tzu Chi volunteers were also invited to call on the locals in promoting environmental activities. Many policemen were cheerfully encouraged to tread on aluminium tins with their boots and experienced the joy of recycling.
