29TH ANNUAL ALS MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
welcome
welcome from the president
Welcome to the 29th Annual ALS Memorial
Golf Tournament, through your participation
in this event we celebrate the life of and honour the memory of George (Sonny) Williams
who passed away from ALS.
This event has become a major contributor
to the funding of critical services for ALS patients in our province. The funds raised today,
assist the ALS Society in improving the quality of life for ALS patients their families and
caregivers throughout our province.
ALS is a devastating disease that profoundly
impacts patients, their families, their friends,
their caregivers and all of their lives. Your
invaluable support today helps in many
ways. It allows the ALS Society to provide
much-needed equipment through its loan
program, transportation support for medical care, counseling support and many other
services. It also allows us to host Caregiver
Days throughout BC to assist those providing assistance to their loved ones affected by
this devastating disease while also raising the
awareness and profile of ALS in our province.
The ALS Society of BC thanks you for
participating in and supporting this Annual
Tournament, and in helping us reach our goal
to improve the quality of life for our patients
and their caregivers by providing critically
needed equipment and services that otherwise would not be available to them.
As someone whose family has been directly impacted by this devastating disease
I would like to personally extend my thanks
to all of you for taking time out of your busy
lives to be here today.
Sincerely,
Vandhana Misri, President
welcome from the Interim Chairperson
Being asked to be Interim Chairperson of the
29th Annual ALS Golf Tournament is an honour and a privilege to be able to give back
and help out with such a worthwhile cause.
With your participation and involvement, 30% of the funds raised at the ALS
Memorial Golf Tournament are invested in
the “Sonny” Williams Endowment Fund,
which goes towards supporting caregivers
with caregiver days, and the remaining 70%
goes towards patient services to support
people living with ALS.
Being a caregiver myself I know how important it is to be able to get away even if it is
just for a day, to be able to relax for a moment knowing that your loved one or friend
is being taken care of while you get the
29TH ANNUAL ALS MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
opportunity to meet others in similar situations, exchange stories and suggestions and
learn about the support etc. that is available
to help give patients the best quality of life
possible living with such a horrific disease.
Many thanks to the tournament committee: Rox Wishinski, Rob Neilson, Kathy
Ostrowercha, Jim, Tom, and Zach Williams,
Ann McArthur, Don McCusker, Carole and
Sandy Sinclair, Boyd McConnachie and
especially the fabulous hardworking staff
of ALS Society of BC for their efforts and
contribution.
Enjoy the day and again thank you.
Bobby Farr, 2015 Interim Chair

what is als?
als
Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis (ALS) is a
rapidly progressive,
neuromuscular
disease. It attacks the
motor neurons that
transmit electrical
impulses from the
brain to the voluntary
muscles in the body.
When these muscles
fail to receive
messages, they lose
strength, atrophy
and die. ALS can hit
anyone at any, time
regardless of age,
gender, or ethnic
origin. The average
life expectancy after
diagnosis is three to
five years.
• ALS does not
affect the senses;
only rarely does it
affect the mind
• In 90% of cases, it
strikes people with
no family history of
the disease
• Equipment costs
for each patient
average $137,000;
nursing and home
care costs can be
up to 10 times this
amount
why is als sometimes called
lou gehrig's disease?
Many years ago, Lou Gehrig was known as
professional baseball’s “Ironman.” Strength,
agility, excellent health Lou-Gehrig had everything it took to become a baseball legend.
At the peak of his career, he was diagnosed
as having Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
(ALS), and died two years later, at age 39.
frequently asked questions
Q. What are the early symptoms of ALS?
A. ALS usually becomes apparent either in
the legs, the arms, the throat or the upper
chest area. Some people begin to trip and
fall, some lose the use of their hands and
arms, some find it hard to swallow and some
slur their speech.
Q. How do you “catch” ALS, and what
does it do?
A. ALS cannot be “caught” – it is not
contagious. In 90% of ALS cases, it strikes
people with no family history of the disease.
10% of cases are classified as familial or
inherited ALS. It may occur at any age, with
the likelihood increasing as people grow
older; however, many are struck down in the
prime of life. Since the disease frequently
takes its toll before being positively diagnosed, many patients are debilitated before
learning they have ALS. The disease does
not affect the senses – taste, touch, sight,
smell and hearing, and only rarely does it
affect the mind. ALS wreaks a devastating
effect on patients as well as their families.
As they struggle to cope with the prospect
of advancing disability and death, ALS
may consume their financial, physical and
emotional resources. It is a costly disease in
its later stages, demanding both expensive
nursing care and equipment.
Q. What needs to be done to beat ALS?
A. Although recent research has resulted in
significant breakthroughs, more is needed to
find a cure, but research costs money.
6
LOU GEHRIG
Q. Is there hope for people with ALS?
A. Yes, thanks to recent advances in research and drug therapies.
Q. What is the ALS Society of BC?
A. Established in 1981, the Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis Society of BC is a nonprofit society. It was founded by ALS
patients, their family members and health
care professionals, to meet the physical and
emotional needs of those living with ALS
and their caregivers.
Q. What does the Society do?
A. The ALS Society of BC raises funds for
both research and to provide direct services and support to those currently living
with ALS. Until a cure is found, the Society
provides patient services to help improve the
quality of life of those diagnosed with this
disease by offering an extensive equipment
loan program, support groups and educational materials. Patients are referred to the
Society by neurologists and other health care
professionals, particularly those at the ALS
Centre at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre.
Working together as partners, the GF Strong
Team and the Society are dedicated to enhancing each patient’s quality of life. There
is no cost to register for ALS patients or to
access our services.

texas scramble golf rules
•
Each team will consist of four players.
•
All players can tee off at each hole.
•
The nominated team captain then selects the best drive and marks the position (within 6
inches) with a tee peg (not nearer the hole).
•
The other players then retrieve their balls.
•
The player whose ball has been chosen then plays his next shot first.
•
The remaining players then play within six inches of the tee peg (not nearer the hole).
Note! Golf balls shall be placed on closely mown areas and dropped if the chosen ball in
play is in the rough or a hazard.
•
The above method of play is followed until the green is reached.
•
On the green the same method applies. The ball chosen is marked by a putter head
length and players putt from the same spot in turn.
•
Each player must mark the ball after putting. Play continues from each chosen position
until the ball is holed.
•
The score is the total number of shots from the chosen spots (including the tee shot).
Note! If a player putts and misses but then inadvertently knocks the ball into the hole,
then that score counts.
•
Please hand in your scorecards to the Pro Shop immediately following your game.
•
At the end of the round the total for each hole is added together and the strokes
received subtracted to give the total net medal score for the round. The winning team
will be the one with the lowest medal score.

2015 will mark the 29th anniversary of the
ALS Memorial Golf Tournament
The ALS Memorial Golf Tournament originated as the Asia Pacific Golf Tournament and
was first held on June 26, 1987, in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Festival. The goal
was to raise funds to support local charitable
organizations. The tournament was a vehicle
to raise the money while at the same time
creating fellowship and goodwill amongst
the many players from the Pacific Rim and
Canada. George “Sonny” Williams President
and CEO of Williams Moving and Storage,
was an active supporter from the beginning.
CAREGIVER DAY
NORTH CENTRAL ISLAND
In 1992 after being diagnosed with ALS,
George Williams was appointed Honourary
Chairperson. From this point onward, partial
funds raised were donated to the ALS Society of BC.
It was his belief that if you take something
out of the community you must put something back into the community.
George left his mark on many aspects of BC
golf and business. He had been adamant
in his pursuit of integrity for the moving
industry. He was one of the first principal
patrons for the BC Golf Museum. To add to
his other contributions he was credited as
single handedly saving the BC Open from a
sure demise in 1982.
In 1995, Jim Williams became the president of
the Asia Pacific Golf Foundation and in honour of his father the name of the tournament
was changed to the George Williams Asia Pacific Golf Foundation Invitational Tournament.
According to Arv Olson’s book Backspin, a
few weeks after the first pro-am experience
at the BC Open, George was telling the Vancouver Golf Club professional, Al Nelson, how
much he enjoyed the Pro-Am. Al, a BC PGA
director at the time, thanked him for his kind
words, but also expressed concern that the
BC Open might be unable to carry on due to
financial difficulties. George asked him how
much it would take to continue the BC Open
and Al replied with a figure of $15,000. Moments later George handed Nelson a cheque
for $20,000.
In eight years, the George Williams BC Open
ascended from an uncertain $75,000 tournament to the Canadian Tour’s most lucrative
event, with a $160,000 prize pot. Some of the
winners during George’s sponsorship years
were BC residents Jim Nelford, Rick Gibson
and Jim Rutledge.
George was named a CPGA honorary director for his contributions.
George “Sonny” Williams died on Tuesday,
January 30, 1996 at 12:20am. The game of
golf and the entire province lost a true friend.
George “Sonny” Williams Memorial
Endowment to Support Caregivers
In 1999, the tournament directed funds raised
to ALS and the tournament name changed
to the George Williams Memorial ALS Charity
Golf Tournament.
The George “Sonny” Williams Endowment
Fund was established by the Williams family
in 2003 to support caregivers of people living with ALS in BC. Today, 30% of the funds
raised at the ALS Memorial Golf Tournament
are invested in the Endowment Fund to support caregivers and the remaining 70% is donated to patient services to support people
living with ALS to have the best quality of life
possible living with this horrific disease.
