March 2006 - Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce
Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Newsletter March 2006 www.canyonlakechamber.com Our Business is Making Your Business Better 2006 EXECUTIVE BOARD PRESIDENT Dwain Blaschke Attorney-at-Law 1st VICE PRESIDENT Jeanne Slupik Jeanne’s Dressing Room BOARD President’s Message I have known for a while that excitement comes in at least two categories. There is the first little league home run, drivers license and date. Then there is your stalled car on the railroad tracks with a train coming. The latter maybe exciting, but it is an experience we would rather forego. 2nd VICE When Jaynellen, our Executive Director, first told me she had PRESIDENT an opportunity, which she felt she had to consider, I assured her she Pete Proctor should do what was best for her. I felt, that although I didn’t need the Anchor’s Landing Family Restaurant distraction of choosing another Executive Director, it had all happened to me before and I had survived. After all, as the head of my section at 3rd VICE two different law firms, I had seen lawyers come and go and with PRESIDENT some extra effort, everything was fine. Lou Eilers This developed in a way I had not anticipated. First, there was Associate Member the not unexpected call from The Times Guardian. I graciously broke Mr. BBQ my vow to never co-operate with seeing my name in the paper. I should explain that the press has always been very kind to me personSECRETARY ally, but I do recall what was written about the other side of several Kay McDonald cases. Ah, but for the grace of God... Then came the inevitable e-mails. Ameripoint Title For reasons I do not know this was a surprise. Directors had questions. ASST SECRETARY I owed an explanation, so I gave, via e-mail my responses. These were Robert Maxwell Case as vague as a Washington D.C. politician’s explanation of the new Entertainer Medicare rules. I rationally thought everyone could wait until the next meeting in two and a half weeks for any details that might enlighten TREASURER them. And, there wasn’t really much to tell. But, the directors were Lynn Tiller Certified Public Accountant anxious for details, as anxious as a pre-teen waiting on the next Harry Potter installment. I could handle this. Then, one of Jaynellen’s biggest fans called. He ASST TREASURER Jim Steadman was concerned about her leaving. His friends had concerns about her Jet Tax Service leaving. Unfortunately, this caller spoke for the office volunteers. This was now going down hill fast. The directors are very important to the PAST PRESIDENT organization, but the volunteers keep the office open, the day-to-day Laurie Whitmire operations humming and represented probably the most capable LakFirst State Bank ers. They were all retirees. Worse, they knew things. Lots of things. Things vital to the business of promoting Canyon Lake. Other stuff too. Continued page 2 OF DIRECTORS Eileen Campbell Lodge at Turkey Cove Kim Morris Associate Kristi Drugg CRRC Recreation Program Director John Guenzel Rio Raft & Resort Linda Epley Canyon Bend Self Storage Dianne Thomas Prudential Classic Realty BJ Thomas Mickey Ferrell Realtors Pam Welch John D. Welch & Assoc Tameria Scott Associate Valerie Schroller Alternative Pest Control STAFF Jaynellen Ladd Executive Director Bonnie Hopper Assistant Administrator OUR BUSINESS IS MAKING YOUR BUSINESS BETTER I now was on the cusp of a potential crisis. Some one needed to bring order out of what seemed to be, at this point, mild chaos. Except to me. I thought I heard the train. I could see myself in my car on the tracks. Where were all the leaders when you needed one? Jan Kennedy would know what to do. So would Danny Scheel or Bob Holder. I decided to invite the retiree and volunteer coordinator, Bill Rilat, for a visit. Stumbling in the dark, I had grabbed hold of a smart idea. We had a wonderful visit in spite of Bill’s Aggie hood. He said that the volunteers really liked Jaynellen and were sad to see her go. So sad, that one or more might go too. Unlike the lawyer from Austin, I had never been shot. But, I knew it must feel bad, like I did. Life goes on and I drove my wife to the New Braunfels Art League where she had to do something. By the way, beware, because from her description of these ladies, they are as capable as our retirees and therefore just as potentially dangerous. Of course, they are almost all retirees too. Sitting in my car, waiting on my wife, I had a brilliant idea. We would have a meeting and vote not to accept Jaynellen’s resignation. Then she would have to stay. This is how I saved the chamber. Actually, the point is that The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce has over 450 members, twenty directors, and many volunteers, but a core of ten that do much of the day-to-day business. The job of Executive Director is not easy. The Executive Director must interact on an ongoing basis with at least thirty directors and volunteers, with County, WORD and other governmental groups, other Chambers, the press and more and more. But you get the picture. This is not a small organization. It takes a lot of work to accomplish what we do each day, month and year. If the Chamber is to improve and be of better service to its members, more hours are needed from the members. And it is the business of the members to make sure that we are moving forward. Please join us for our annual Bar-B-Que cook-off at April 29, 2006. Volunteers are needed. Call 964-2223 and we will be happy to find just the right job for you. This past month has renewed my belief that I live in the best place with the best and most talented people. You truly care about the businesses of our area and this wonderful community. I thank all of you and will see you at the cook-off. Dwain W. Blaschke, President IMPORTANT—LAKE LEVEL In regards to the issue of the Lake Levels: Our concern is giving correct information on the lake level. If the level is misstated especially by a number of feet, this will have a major effect on businesses! If word gets out the lake is down a significant number of feet, people will start to go elsewhere and not come to Canyon Lake. We need to make sure the information being given out is the accurate lake level. Please go to canyonlakechamber.com and click on Canyon Lake Level & Guadalupe River Flow Link on home page. This link is directly linked to W.O.R.D which is then directly linked to U.S. Corp. of Engineers website. FIREWORKS ARE COMING, FIREWORKS ARE COMING, FIREWORKS ARE COMING TO CANYON LAKE Randolph AFB Recreation Center here at Canyon Lake will again host “Fireworks Over Canyon Lake” on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at 10:00 p.m. Over 3,000 of us have enjoyed the display in the past as we can stay here instead of going to New Braunfels. The chamber would like to encourage all of Canyon Lake businesses and families to participate in this fabulous event by donating monies to help defray the cost that Randolph must pay for this expensive show (approximately $20,000). In the past they have gotten approximately $2000 from the community and the community goal this year is $5,000. The chamber feels the community can do much better to ‘pull its fair share’ to keep this event continuing for years to come. Won’t you please donate to this event. You can come by the Chamber and drop off your donation. At the mixers we’ll have a ‘donation jar’ identified for this worthwhile event for you to drop in your contribution. Any help the community can do to help will be greatly appreciated. Almost 200 people attended the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Winter Texan Reception on Thursday Feb. 9,2006. Canyon Lake businesses are more than happy to see Winter Texans come to our area each year. This is a slow time of year for some area businesses and the influx of visitors is a boost to the local economy. The Winter Texan Reception is our way of thanking our Winter friends for staying at Canyon Lake and becoming a part of our community. Winter Visitors from as far away as Alaska, Canada, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming were in attendance. Many have been coming to Canyon Lake for over five years, and each year we meet a few new folks who are spending their first Winter in our area. Everyone enjoyed delicious foods provided by our local area restaurants, caterers, businesses ,and individuals of the community. Jaynellen Ladd handed out many door prizes donated by area businesses to the lucky ticket holders. This year's event was held at CRRC. This location provided the space needed to accommodate all our visitors and gave them a chance to learn about programs offered at the center. Members of the Silver Sneakers II class performed some of their exercises for us with instructor Kristi Drugg, who makes exercising lots of fun . Live entertainment was provided by Jazz and Diamonds. Canyon Lake's own Gayle Hill and his lovely wife Kathy entertained us with their music and vocals. We are looking forward to seeing all our Winter Texan friends again next year. I would like to say a special thank you to Linda Epley for all the work she did to make this event happen. Also many thanks to Ola Armstrong for the time and energy she put into decorating the hall, and to Betty Howie and her husband Lou for helping set up and staying to clean up, along with Terry Cappetta.
