When so little means so much
Since 1989
It was snowing in Dallas and it was where I
was called to be, a day I would not have missed
– a day with love in the air and a storybook tale
made for Valentine’s Day. My forever-loving
son Dalton proposed to his sweetheart on Christmas Day. Alex is from Dallas and her family is
there as she was that day, waiting for Dalton to
arrive. She is a lovely and loving choice who has her head and her
heart in a positive space.
A romantic at heart and firmly focused on family, Dalton quietly
gathered his family and hers to surprise her at the big tree downtown,
cordially decorated by the City of Dallas. He had planted at its base
an oversized and splendidly wrapped box that had the smaller, more
revealing ring box tucked away inside. As the families came out of
hiding, he kneeled on one knee to deliver his eloquent proposal to a
beautifully beaming grin.
The snow slowed life down a bit, emptying streets and muffling
sounds, while adding the magic of romance found in fairytales. One
pair of cold feet in flip flops, surprisingly not more, sealed the setting with true Texas charm. Oversized snowflakes that christened the
ground made the icing that topped off a p-e-r-f-e-c-t and beautiful day.
There were no jets flying above, no bells and whistles but thoughtful
plans that make all the difference in the world.
But Valentines isn’t all about romance; it’s about love. A simple
act of kindness that the Seniors had planned, exploded with a flood
of love for a group of veterans who gave much and expect little and
whose numbers were no longer small and made a gang of folks feel
good. It began quite small and grew quite big in very little time from
just a handful of souls. And they never left the building... well, barely.
The Dam Seniors were floored first, then thrilled, and grateful they
had the goods to give. The common thread that runs through this love
story is CRRC. For our February profile, we feature both.
On February 8th at CASA Flambeau, CASA honors three citizens
who have been instrumental in CASA’s formation: Judge Boyer, his
wife Toya Ohlrich Boyer, and Karen Sleighter. While Assistant DA in
1985, the judge was involved in the organization that preceded CASA
as advocates for abused kids. Toya founded the Wings auxiliary helping volunteers and CASA to achieve numerous goals. Both remain involved. Karen began as a Court Advocate and is now Board President.
These contributors gave of themselves, but it’s the hundreds of faces
they have impacted that tells a great story of love.

5th Annual Romantic Rendezvous: An expression of love
Saturday, February 16
Where can you treat your Valentine, help children love to read,
feed neighbors and support needy students in higher education?
At the 5th Annual Romantic Rendezvous! There’s no better way
to celebrate and honor your loved one. You get reserved seating,
dinner with dessert, great dance music, complimentary premium
wine, beer and soft drinks, and – on top of all that – some is tax
deductible.
The Canyon Lake Rotary Club has created the perfect event
to declare your Valentine message for this year. For just $100 per
couple, you will enjoy all of the above details. And, you’ll be supporting some impressive community support projects.
The club was one of 52 clubs (out of 34,000 worldwide) honored
last year by Rotary International – with the “Significant Achievement” award – for its literacy program that helped first graders in
Canyon Lake elementary schools learn to and love to read. Handmade bookcases, adopted by many Romantic Rendezvous attendees last year, were awarded to students achieving their grade level
in reading.
The club continues to focus on education, providing worthy students in need with scholarship funding during each of their college
semesters for four years. This helps students know they will have
regular money to rely upon, instead of struggling, taking out more
loans, or dropping out of school due to expenses.
The club supports the CRRC Food Pantry with turkeys at
Thanksgiving, and by serving in volunteer positions at the annual
North Pole Village community event. Members also help with fundraising for the Salvation Army each December, and donate time
to assist Operation Float a Soldier in hosting
wounded warriors at a fun day on the lake.
As The Almost Patsy Cline Band provides the dance music for
the setting, you may find some fun, delightful or personal gifts at
terrific prices in the silent auction.
The Romantic Rendezvous is the annual fundraiser for Canyon
Lake Rotary, and while you are enjoying the setting and a sweet
evening with someone you love, you are also supporting all of our
community projects. Thank you.
With overwhelming community support, the Romantic Rendezvous has grown into a major event locally so call soon for tickets.
And while you are enjoying the sweet evening with your love, you
are also supporting all Rotary community projects. Thank you.
Tickets are available through a Rotarian, at 830-964-4744
or by email at [email protected].
Doors open at 5:30 with dinner at 6:30.
Visit canyonlakerotary.org for more details.
The attire is Western Formal or black tie/cocktails.
Maureen Schein arrived in Canyon Lake in 2006. She and husband, Ken, spent 26 years in the Rocky Mountains of northern New
Mexico, but opted for the warmth of Canyon Lake and family in
Texas upon retirement. Maureen spent her career in communications and ran her own Public Relations company. She has been a
Rotarian for nine years and is the immediate Past President of the
Canyon Lake Rotary Club.
Canyon Lake Rotary is a 501(c)3 organization.

Real estate provisions in
“fiscal cliff” bill
by Betty Giannone
On January 1, both the Senate and
House passed H.R. 8 legislation to
avert the “fiscal cliff.” The bill was
signed into law by President Barack
Obama on January 2. Below is a
summary of real estate related provisions in the bill.
• Mortgage cancellation relief is extended for one year to January 1, 2014.
• Deduction for mortgage insurance premiums for filers making
below $110,000 is extended through 2013 and made retroactive
to cover 2012.
• 15-year straight-line cost recovery for qualified leasehold improvements on commercial properties is extended through 2013
and made retroactive to cover 2012.
• 10% tax credit (up to $500) for homeowners for energy improvements to existing homes is extended through 2013 and made retroactive to cover 2012.
Permanent repeal of Pease Limitations for 99% of taxpayers.
Under the agreement so called “Pease Limitations” that reduce
the value of itemized deductions are permanently repealed for
most taxpayers but will be reinstituted for high income filers. These limitations will only apply to individuals earning more than
$250,000 and joint filers earning above $300,000. These thresholds have been increased and are indexed for inflation and will
rise over time. Under the formula, the amount of adjusted gross
income above the threshold is multiplied by 3%. That amount is
then used to reduce the total value of the filer’s itemized deductions. The total amount of reduction cannot exceed 80% of the
filer’s itemized deductions.
Capital Gains. Capital Gains rate stays at 15% for those in the
top rate of $400,000 (individual) and $450,000 (joint) return. After that, any gains above those amounts will be taxed at 20%. The
$250,000/$500,000 exclusion for sale of principal residence remains in place.
Estate Tax. The first $5 million dollars in individual estates and
$10 million for family estates are now exempted from the estate
tax. After that the rate will be 40%, up from 35%. The exemption
amounts are indexed for inflation.

Hairstyles: A reflection of
lifestyles and you
’
by Katherine Long You hair is your “crowning glory.” Whether
you have no hair or a lot of hair, crowning glory
refers to the uppermost part of your physical
appearance. Your hairstyle should compliment your head and
face shapes as well as your lifestyle or it can make you look off
balance and awkward. The decision to make is how you want to
look based on your hair type and characteristics.
It’s very stylish these days for men to shave thinning hair
and wear a bald head. This style can be better than a combover, a big forehead with a receding hairline or a bald crown
and we see more shaved and bald heads these days. They can
be very attractive but there are several things to consider before
you get out your razors. Start first with a hairdresser’s opinion
about the shape of your head, (as well as the appearance of
your ears). You or your hairdresser should also check for scars
and bumps that you may not want to show. Finally, the maintenance to keep this look should be considered before you get
started. Trust me; you don’t want to look like an alien so get a
professional opinion.
Choose your hairstyle so that it’s in balance with your head
and face shape, your lifestyle and the type of hair you have.
Whether it’s curly, straight, thick or thin, all have to be considered when creating the perfect style for your hair and body.
Stylist tricks that add fullness are underlayers and blunt cuts.
Highlights add depth and thickness to the hair shaft. Gentle
blowdrying techniques can add fullness. Recent inaugural coverage showed what bangs can do; but thick to whispy bangs, if
not none, must be considered. Certain hair products add fullness while others promising to do the same weigh it down. A
different approach is required for hair that’s too thick.
Your lifestyle also comes into play. Do you have time to
maintain this style? Will you blow-dry, curl, straighten or gel
your hair to maintain this look? Even walk and wear styles often require more effort than it may appear. A hairstylist has to
consider all these factors before cutting or shaping your hair.
It’s most important to communicate with your hairstylist about
each variable so that your style is custom-designed for you –
with you, your hair and your lifestyle in mind.

Katherine Long has owned and operated Katherine’s Salon,

by Ryan Bullock, DVM
Last month’s column discussed the platelet
rich plasma treatment for arthritis. This month,
I have another very exciting arthritis treatment
option called laser therapy, aka “cold laser” or
“Class IV laser.” After three years of personal research in these lasers, I’m very excited that we have just purchased
one for use at both of our clinics! This extremely safe and effective
treatment reminds me of the magic wand Dr. McCoy from Star Trek
used to treat his patients. It works by sending various wavelengths
of light to penetrate deep into injured or inflamed tissues to reduce
swelling, decrease pain, increase circulation and promote healing of
joints, ligaments and wounds.
Light waves work by resetting the positive and negative charge
gradients that healthy cells need to function properly. In traumatized
tissues, these charges are decreased and cells cannot produce energy
and dispose of waste efficiently, which are crucial steps in healing.
The light waves also decrease pain by “resetting” nerve cells so that
a larger stimulus is needed to cause nerves to fire painful messages
to the brain. These results have been proven in hundreds of scientific
studies over the past decade.
Depending on the size of the area to be treated, treatment times
vary from three to seven minutes. There’s no pain associated with
the treatment, and your pet will feel at most a soothing, warming
sensation on their skin. No sedation is needed to perform the treatments; in most cases you can sit with your pet during their treatment.
The treatment is extremely safe as all that is being used are light
waves at specific therapeutic frequencies. It’s considered by many
as a much safer, all-natural, and holistic treatment than many current
arthritis treatments that use drugs to relieve pain and inflammation.
The treatments are cumulative and normally your pet will need
more than one to gain any positive results. Protocols vary depending upon the condition, but for most chronic conditions such as an
arthritic hip or knee, a pet would receive three treatments in the first
week, two in the second week, one in the third week, then monthly
maintenance treatments. Cost of treatments usually vary from $20
to $40 depending upon the size of area being treated. Not only will
your pet have better mobility, but you should also save money buying less Rimadyl, Vetprofen, Previcox, etc. For more information
ask your veterinarian and visit www.k-laserusa.com.

Exercise less and lose more
by VJ Tiller
How do you feel about that? Sounds good
but it is difficult for us to accept. We want to feel
that high that comes after an intense, longer cardio workout. There’s equipment called a PACE
adjustable, hydraulic resistance workout machines and recovery stations that combine short duration exercise,
rest, and progression – doing a little bit more each time. “PACE”
stands for Progressively Accelerating Cardiopulmonary Exertion.
Throughout your 30 to 40 minute workout, you have tiny increments of exertion and then recovery or rest time. Each week you
build off of it and exert yourself a little more.
Dr. Al Sears stands behind much research which demonstrates
that short bursts of high intensity activity is better. It builds your
metabolism up and strengthens your heart and lungs. That’s a huge
difference from what happens when you do cardiovascular endurance exercise such as long distance running or any type of long distance intense exercise. When you train for endurance, your capacity shrinks. Your lungs shrink. Your heart’s ability to pump blood
shrinks. Your muscles shrink, too, because your body is downsizing. One gym member who worked out intensely for longer periods
of time couldn’t understand why her lean mass was shrinking. The
creator of PACE circuit machines told her she was working too intensely for too long a time! Unlike cardio, PACE makes your heart the most important part
of your body – stronger by growing its reserve capacity. That means
it boosts your heart’s pumping power. The same thing happens for
your lungs.* A 30-minute brisk walk, a few minutes on an elliptical machine or swimming a few laps are examples of good cardio
workouts. The best part is that when you finish your PACE Circuit
Workout session, your body continues to burn fat for up to 24 hours
– while you get on with your life!
Your fitness and wellness center can help you determine what
workout is best for your needs. (Why consider fitness without wellness? They are not one in the same.)

High quality door handles operate
smoothly, last a long time, and can make a
stunning impression on guests. In short, they are worth the
investment. This is one area where quality really matters and
you get what you pay for. Whether you want to change the
look of your home or are finding it harder to still gracefully
turn the knob, you may want to consider replacing your door
knobs with high quality lever handles.
A few years ago, we expanded our home and required additional interior and exterior door knobs. It seemed like a good
idea to send my wife to select and purchase the knobs since
she was going for a certain “look.” To my surprise, while she
was out, she decided we needed levers instead of knobs. Not
only had she purchased levers for the new doors, she had decided to replace all of our existing knobs! I wondered what I
had gotten myself into. Looking at the boxes of levers I decided to just accept it and start installing them. I’ll admit I wasn’t thrilled with her reasoning at the time,
but now I agree that it was a great decision. After a short while,
I understood why she selected the levers. First of all, the new
levers really pulled everything together. They’re heavy, high
quality levers that operate flawlessly. And she was right, they
are easier to use than knobs. Levers don’t have to be gripped with your hand so people
with strength issues or arthritis usually find them easier to
use. I keep an eye toward things like this because we aren’t
getting any younger. I especially appreciate them when my
hands are full, because it’s easy to push the lever with my
elbow or the box I’m carrying without having to set things
down.
If you decide to use levers be sure to get a good heavy
duty brand. There are many levels of quality so do your research. When you’re ready to pull the trigger, schedule a time
to have them installed and enjoy your new levers!

Carpet warranties and consumer expectations
by Jim Dannehy
Flooring warranties are part of the marketing package for all
flooring products. All warranties come with exclusions and most
are never fully read or even seen until there is a problem. Then, the
customer is left to interpret them alone, only to find that the warranty rarely covers what they thought it did.
Consider carpet wear warranties, for example. Warranties will
state that the carpet has a ten-year wear warranty. The consumer
thinks that wear means appearance retention or any change to the
carpet due to use, such as traffic lanes appearing or carpet that is in
disarray in front of a favorite chair. When the carpet doesn’t look
the same in these areas, the consumer thinks it’s wearing prematurely. When they read the wear warranty, they find it states “the
carpet will not lose 10% of its fiber during the warranty period,”
but mentions nothing about appearance. Carpets “ugly out” way
before they wear out.

Stain warranties

asredconfusing. They typically state
“the carpet offers improved resistance to stains when the carpet is
properly maintained in its original location. This makes the phrase
“properly maintained” very important. But, the warranties very
rarely state what “properly maintained” means.
No mat or crush warranties are equally as confusing. Carpeting is a vertically-oriented textile floor covering. When it’s walked
on repeatedly in concentrated areas, it does mat and crush. This is
the law of physics at work. The
warranty should

Warranties are marketing tools which are

For every customer, there is an appropriate
product. The right product in the right place will

expectations and budget to select the proper floor covering. A simple rule to follow is “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Albert Einstein, the noted physicist, stated
“Compounding is the most powerful force in
the universe,” however most people just apply
that statement to money. For our purposes, we
will apply those very principles to growing our businesses. I can
give you a suggestion to implement right away that can potentially
increase your sales by 15–30%.
Let’s start with traffic, people coming through your doors, your
internet site, etc. What if you could just increase your traffic by
15%? Say you have 400 people coming through your door per day,
week, whatever, and 15% actually buy something. A 15% increase
in traffic is only 60 more visitors. The Small Business Administration (SBA) states that only 15% of your customers on average will
tographer, and editorial and sales
purchase something, so you only need nine customers to purchase
departments all wrapped in one little
something to increase your sales by 15%.
head.
Now this is where most small business really mess it up. They
never follow up by capturing the customer name and contact information. These lists of clients, who have already purchased something
from you, are more prone to buy from you again provided they had
a pleasant experience.
With careful nurturing such as postcard, email, birthday cards,
special “client only” sales, greeting them by name, etc., what is the
likelihood of them returning 15% more often? How about some
free education for your clients? A shoe store could send out a little
blurb on what to look for in a quality shoe. A dress shop could send
out a flyer talking about different fabrics and how they wear while
incorporating news about some newly arrived styles. You have now
increased your results another “compounded” 15 % with very little
additional expense thus increasing your margins for those additional
sales as well.
Your list is invaluable – or worthless – depending on how you
handle it. If you don’t have one, regardless of whether you’re a
pizza shop, restaurant, hair dresser, clothing store, or manufacturer,
you must create and maintain that list. Then you need to treat those
clients like royalty (or royaltie$) which they certainly are. I found
that fascinating and it made me think.

are in your favor – for now. If you’re married, then you do deserve some credit. Statistically, depending on the source, almost
half of the marriages in the United States end in divorce. It gets
significantly worse with each successive marriage thereafter.
Divorce law in Texas has been mostly codified in the Texas
expert help for your home
Family Code. Most of that code is devoted to marriage and disince 1973
vorce. Separations are not legally recognized in Texas, except in
determining the day triggering some future orders of the Court
may apply. You’re either still married or the divorce decree has
been signed. It’s also important to note, there’s a 60-day waiting period after the Petitioner has served the Respondent. Many
times the decision is mutual, but basically the Petitioner is the
party that filed for divorce. After the divorce, there are the two
really big issues: kids and money. By the way, a big part of the
kid’s issue involves money.
Most divorces with children wind up with both parents being

Well water storage systems
by Randy Lawrence
During times of drought, there is a great
deal of concern with the possibility of wells
going dry in the area. Many people are forced
to take action when they no longer have a constant supply of water to their home. Some have to replace well
pumps, only to find that the old pump failed due to low water conditions. Others must drill new wells in order to access a larger supply of water. In most cases, these repairs are unexpected, and timeconsuming. During severe drought, many well service companies
are overwhelmed with calls, causing some families to endure days
without a supply of fresh water. A water storage tank would be
helpful to many of these homeowners.
The benefits of a properly installed storage tank are numerous.
These tanks are normally installed near the well, so that the well
pump sends the water directly into the storage tank. This removes
much of the back pressure from your well pump, so that the workload on the pump is greatly reduced. The water can be sprayed into
the top of the storage tank, eliminating odors which may be present. The water is then re-pressurized by an external pump which
can maintain higher pressure, and is much less costly to repair
or replace than a submersible pump. Protection systems are also
available for both pumps to ensure longevity.
Even on existing storage tanks, an early warning system, such
as a light or alarm, can be installed to activate when the water in
the tank drops to a certain level, indicating the need to check your
well for problems. This buys you the time you need to contact a
professional. Should you happen to run out of water before the
well is operational, there are water delivery services which can
bring you a supply of water to replenish your storage tank, thereby
maintaining your day to day routine while you await repairs. For
homes in remote areas, stored water is also a valuable asset for
firefighters.
Now is an ideal time to consider adding a storage tank to your
well. Then you’ll be prepared before another Texas summer takes
it’s toll on your well.

Getting into hot water
by Steve Sherman
In the hardware arena, two things come to
mind in February. Nope, sending Valentines is
not one of them. Most of our customers have
two issues: lack of hot water and fixing leaking or broken pipes. Here are some common
questions:
I am not getting enough hot water from my water heater. The
thermostat may be set too low; otherwise an element is probably
not heating correctly and should be replaced.
There is water leaking from my water heater. What’s the cause?
The pressure relief valve could be leaking. Try operating the valve
to see if it will stop. It also might need tightening. A gasket around
the heating element may need to be replaced, or the tank could be
rusted out, which requires a new hot water heater.
What is the purpose of a pressure relief valve on a water heater? This is a safety device that will open in case of high pressure
or temperature.
What is the difference between PVC and CPVC plastic pipe?
CPVC can be used on hot and cold lines, while PVC is for cold
water only. PVC is usually used as a drainpipe.
How should I cut plastic pipe? Any fine-tooth saw will work.
Be sure you remove any burrs.
Is 1/2” CPVC and 1/2” PVC the same size? No. CPVC is meaCanyon Lake Views
sured by O.D., which makes its sizing similar to hard copper. PVC
is measured by I.D., which makes its sizing similar to iron pipe.
Why do you recommend plastic pipe cleaners and primers?
These are applied to a pipe and fitting before applying the solvent
weld glue to ensure a strong bond. Their use is always a good idea,
especially if it’s for a water supply line.
What is plumber’s putty? It is a sealing putty used for sealing
basket strainers, garbage disposal rims and tub drains, etc.
Which is better for sealing - Teflon(TM) tape or thread joint
compound? They do the same job, but Teflon(TM) tape is easier to
work with and makes a cleaner joint.

CASA Party & Fundraiser • February 8, 6:30pm
The community is invited to “Laissez le bon temps rouler” (let
the good times roll) at CASA Flambeaux on February 8 at 6:30pm
at Dick’s Classic Garage in San Marcos. CASA will honor community members who have helped shape the volunteer organization:
District Judge Bruce Boyer and his wife Toya Ohlrich Boyer, both
long-time supporters of CASA, and Karen Sleighter, the President
of CASA’s Board of Directors.
Judge Bruce Boyer has been speaking up for children in Central
Texas since 1985. Judge Bruce Boyer was Comal County Assistant District Attorney and New Braunfels Mayor while helping train
CASA volunteers; he has provided guidance to the organization
since then, and served on the first Board of Comal County Child Advocates, an organization that later became CASA of Central Texas.
His wife, Toya Ohlrich Boyer, is a Founding Life Member of The
Wing Society, an auxiliary board created to support CASA volunteers. She was also instrumental in achieving goals set in CASA’s
strategic plan as in the process to secure its own office building.
Karen Sleighter began as a volunteer advocate and is the current
Board President, serving with an outgoing leadership style with
wide-ranging experience conducive to all CASA has accomplished.
Enjoy beautiful cars, live music by “Louisiana’s Rockin’ Fidler”

Deep in the Hearts of Women everywhere
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, as well as men. Women
should know their heart attacks are mild unlike the writhing male
seen on TV – often described as indigestion, extreme fatigue, some
with nausea or fainting but not necessarily chest pain. Heart disease is
often curable with a fully nutritional diet that includes restrictions and
exercise. Remember, get medical advice from your medical provider.

Every nation, every institution, every
individual needs a solid foundation. It is
the claim of orthodox apostolic Christianity that Jesus is the incarnation of Deity,
and as such that He is the Foundation of
everything – the nations, the church and
the people. He is not recognized as such in the world at large at
this juncture in time, but it is the belief of Christians that one day
He will be so lauded.
The New Testament frequently refers to Jesus as the great Rock
or Stone, the Foundation. Specifically, He is mentioned under this
metaphor in relation to the nation of Israel, the Gentile nations and
the Christian church, but to each in a different way.
We invite you to explore this theme with us in February, and
who knows, you might become convinced that Jesus is the Ultimate Foundation – and your life will never be the same again!
Sincerely,
Dr. Franklin D Watts

Big WOOP
by Terry Schroller
That’s right people. You’re reading an
article written by one the few outsiders
invited to The World Organization Of
Pests (or WOOP ) annual conference.
I was invited to represent the opposing forces because
they think I speak their dialect. To be honest, all I heard was
a bunch of buzzing, chirping, whistling, clicking noises but I
played along nodding occasionally and it seemed to work because I didn’t get stung once. It was an intense affair I gathered as pheromones were being released all over the place
causing quite a frenzy among the participants. I couldn’t tell
whether this was a sign of approval, but my respiratory system has not recovered yet. There were also many displays of
“I’m bigger and badder than you” going on. The wasps were
twitching their wings rapidly while the tarantulas where
standing on their back legs and the ants were scurrying all
over the place as the bees and hornets gathered in swarms.
The coalition of beautiful bugs were there too, displaying all
the latest rage in colorful wings and things.
All very impressive but the best was yet to come. I was
invited to sit at the head table with the Big WOOPer himself
for dinner. Kind of weird cuisine though because bugs will
eat anything including each other. There was some road kill
for flies, grain stuff for weevils, sweets for ants, flowers for
bees and butterflies and on and on. The spiders provided a
clean-up service for all that passed away that day (bugs don’t
live very long you know) by encasing them to serve at dinner
later. Fortunately for me there was a nice selection of veggies for grasshoppers and other vegans. I just kept nodding,
explaining I was on a diet after the holidays and a few leaves
would be all I needed.
From what I could ascertain they didn’t give a flip about
Republicans, Democrats, Lindsey Lohan or a fiscal cliff.
What did surprise me was their lack of interest in global
warming. They know what’s going to happen before we do
and they adjust accordingly. They were more interested in
areas that had banned pesticides and their locations. Gee, I
wonder why!
That’s the latest on WOOP. Stay tuned for further updates.

Many recreational divers from across the
state visit Canyon Lake and New Braunfels
area each year to enjoy scuba diving opportunities in Canyon Lake and the Comal River. The
lake enjoys the reputation as one of the clearest, deepest lakes in Texas.
There are at least eight well known primary dive areas at the lake
and a few other areas that are not as well known. There is active
diving from most of the area’s State parks and boat ramps along the
shoreline of Canyon Lake. Boat diving in the lake affords divers
with ease of access and the flexibility of diving multiple dive sites
in a day. Choose the depth you wish to dive in.
Shore diving is a quick and easy way to get wet, try out new gear,
take a training course or just have fun that’s free! There are several
groups of divers who hit the lake and/or river weekly.
Each site has its own topography features. For example, Comal
Park has some great erosion caves – a great opportunity to train in
overhead environments. Overlook Park off shore has a lot of forty
to fifty foot trees covered when the lake was flooded in the early
1960s. Shore diving at Overlook offers a pretty nice wall dive in
around 40 feet of water.
The Comal River, one of the shortest rivers in the United States,
is clear spring-fed water loaded with marine life and grasses with
the water temp consistently in the 70s year round. Typically shallow,
the river is a great place to play and have fun in the water. Whatever
your preference, local diving is great in the Canyon Lake area. Local dive maps are available free at your neighborhood dive shop.
If you prefer exploring waters away from local shores, ask about
discounted group trips that dive shops commonly plan to very uncommon locations. The seasoned divers at your local dive shop are
a great resource of experience and will ensure your trip is a success.
Paul and Jennifer Hensley, owner/operators of Canyon Lake Divers, operated the number one PADI dive center in the Mayan Riviera
for over 18 years – a reputation earned with many years of success.
They bring a wealth of knowledge to share with their neighbors
here. Stop by and ask about one of their many dive trips planned to
local sites and to Fiji, the Cayman Islands and Bonaire.
