The 20-19 victory last Friday night
over Cascade High School gave
Eagleville a perfect 10-0 season.
When you attend a football game in a small
town such as Eagleville, it¹s the entire town
playing the opponents. You can¹t help but
be involved.
Nathan Jernigan, with 21 carries, racked up
187 yards and two touchdowns and passed
for 51 yards. Chris Hale, sophomore, rushed
for 132 yards and one TD on 17 carries.
Coach Steve Carson praised the entire team
for their efforts throughout the season and
especially their win over Cascade.
The TSSAA playoff game will be Friday,
November 11 at 7 pm at Eagleville Stadium.

Autumn Digital
Photo Contest
The Eagleville Times sponsored an Autumn
Digital Photo Contest for students attending
Eagleville, Rockvale, College Grove, Chapel
Hill and Unionville Schools.
Pictured, at left, is the 1st place $50 winning
photo submitted by Vince Zocco, 11th grade
student at Eagleville High School.
Second place $25 winner was Hannah
Fuhrman, 10th grade student at Eagleville
High School.
Third place $25 winner was Alex Ewing, 12th
grade student at Eagleville High School.
All three photos will be available to view on the
Eagleville Times website at eaglevilletimes.com.
Students... During the coming months, start
preparing for a Winter Digital Photo Contest.
Contest rules will be available on the website
within the next few weeks. The next winning
photo will be published in the January 2012
issue of the Eagleville Times.
Currently, the Eagleville Times website is

A Message From Your Mayor
SCOOT OVER WORLD - HERE COMES EAGLEVILLE
There are so many
positive
events
taking place in
Eagleville
today
so all of us need to
smile and pat each
other on the back.
Positive things
happen only when people work together,
unselfishly.
Let’s start with our football team. The
Eagleville Eagles just finished there regular
season UNDEFEATED 10-0. There is
only seven teams left in the entire state of
Tennessee that is undefeated and we have
one one them here to brag about. Now they
advance to the state playoffs.
Whether you enjoy athletics or not, is not
the question here. When you take any high
school athletic program, regardless if it is
girls volleyball or football, and put these
young people working together toward the
same goal, they learn hard work, rewards,
team work, respect for each other that will
follow them to their work place and family
relationships .
We have finally moved into our new city
hall. It appears today that everything is
working as it should. The move of only
next door, 50 feet across the parking lot, has
had its challenges.
Getting all new computer systems working
as they should has kept Mrs. Von Almen
busy the first few weeks. Please stop and
visit, sit on the front porch and try out the the
rocking chairs or swing till you can’t stop!
This next week we should see construction
start on the school expansion. This project
is long overdue and very much appreciated.
The new class rooms are scheduled to be
finished next July before school starts.
Hopefully, we can start the process of
finding money for additional class rooms,
an auditorium and complete the entire
project. If you know or see any of the
county commissioners, please say thank
you. These are the people who vote and
allocate money to be spent on the projects
that benefit us all.
Our pre-application for the sewer grant
has be submitted to the USDA for approval.
Hopefully, in 30 to 45 days we’ll have
more news on grant money for the sewer.
This long over due project will give us a
breath of fresh air but, it will require much,
planning, management and understanding
from everyone .
YES our town and its citizens have a lot
to be proud of and brag about. Shown your
pride, be proud of your town, let the world
know YOU ARE PROUD TO LIVE IN
EAGLEVILLE , TENNESSEE.
Please mark your calendars for December
10th at 11:00 for our Annual Eagleville
Christmas Parade. There will be some
streets closed for a short period of time, so
please inform people who this could effect.

Eagleville City Hall Open House

Congratulations to the City of Eagleville
on the grand opening of city hall. October
2, 2011 provided a beautiful fall day for
the grand opening and open house of the
new city hall for the town of Eagleville.
Approximently 80 people were in
attendance to tour the beautiful log
building. Refreshments were provided on
the front porch with the guests sitting on
the swing and in the rocking chairs as well
as in the spacious lobby as they visited
with one another. Thank-you to Mary
Tune, wife of Mayor Sam Tune for setting
up and providing the finger food buffet.
The ribbon cutting ceremony began
with a welcome from Kelli Bean from the
Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce.
Also present, Chamber of Commerce
President Paul Latture. Mr. Latture made
an announcement that the chamber would
have a visitors center set up in the city hall
building with information and brochures
on the surrounding area. This information
would would be made available those
passing through the area.
Mayor Sam Tune welcomed everyone
and gave a brief history of our unique and
wonderful town of Eagleville. He made
note of several who were in attendance
including Representative Joe Carr. Diane
Black could not be there but a representative
from her staff was there in her place.
Wayne Blair, Board of Education member
who was very instrumental in getting
our expansion for our school was also in
attendance. Mayor Tune announced this
work would begin in December. Others
too numerous to mention also stopped by
to show their support.
Shortly before the actual ribbon cutting
ceremony, two plaques were unveiled that
will be adorning the walls of city hall.
If you haven’t had a chance to see this
building please stop by to show your
support.

having a great fall and
able to get out and
enjoy our beautiful
weather. This time
of year there is alot
of yard and leaf clean
up going on. Please
remember that a burn
permit is now required for this. The time
period for this is October 15 through May
15. Please abide by the rules. They are in
place for your benefit. If you should need
our assistance if a fire gets out of hand this
will help us be more efficient. Also, another
reminder about having your address on your
mailbox with the numbers clearly visible;
this will help us find you in the quickest
time possible.
On Oct. 15th, we had our first bluegrass
festival, “Pickin in the Park.” It was a
great success. Everyone who was there
enjoyed themselves and they are looking
forward to next years event. Thank-you to
all who made this night so enjoyable. The
performers were Cheryl Chunn and Step
Ahead, Full Steam Ahead, Shannon Cain,
Jamie Prosser and Justin Zimmer. Top
notch professional entertainment right here
in Eagleville. Thank-you to Ronnie Hill for
providing the trailer that was the stage for
the performers. Thank-you also to all who
provided baked goods for the silent auction.
Everyone really worked hard and it was a
great success, with $587.00 being raised for
the department.
On November 19th and 20th we have five
of our firemen who will be going through
a live burn at the Fire Academy. Let’s
keep these men in our prayers. Everyone
continues to work hard on training and
education to be the best that they can be for
their community. Remember to thank our
men if you see them out.
With Thanksgiving coming upon us let’s
remember to count our blessings and be
grateful for all God has blessed us with.

Fire Department Benefit
“Pickin In The Park”

The Eagleville Volunteer Fire Dept. would
like to thank all those who came out and
supported the first annual “Pickin in the
Park.” Saturday night Oct. 15 was a crisp
fall evening filled with friends, family and
great bluegrass music. Concessions were
available and delicious as usual.
The music and entertainment were
provided by three very talented acts who
all played at least an hour each. First to
take the stage was Cheryl Chunn and Step
Ahead. They are a group who perform
music and clogging entertainment. They
perform weekly on the Grand Ole Opry
and performed first so they could get back
to Nashville for their Opry appearance.
The next performers were Shannon Cain,
Jamie Prosser and Justin Zimmer. They
played and sang beautifully together and
also had to be in Murfreesboro later that
evening at another venue. A great thank-
you to them for coming at the last minute
because of a cancelation that we had.
Thank-you to Susan Greene sister of Terry
Greene for booking this act for us. The
last act was Full Steam Ahead, a great and
talented bluegrass band who have ties to
our own town of Eagleville. Thank you to
Ronnie Hill for providing the trailer that
the bands performed on.
Although admission was free, the
Fire Department raised $587.00 due to
donations at the event. There was a Bake
Sale Silent Auction filled with everything
from chess and pecan pie to brownies,
cookies and homemade bread. The wives,
mothers and even out of town guests
donated these goodies. Thank-you.
When the community comes together
great things can happen. Thank-you to
everyone who came out and supported the
fire department.

Computer Shop Now Open
On Main Street
ComputerLady.Biz opened its door on October11,
2011 at 138 Main Street in Eagleville. The shop
is owned and operated by Connie Markham-Price.
Connie has a computer network associates degree from
Daymar Institute in Murfreesboro and is certified in
both computer repair and networking. She has been a
resident of Eagleville for nearly three years and resided
in Rockvale the twelve years previous.
ComputerLady.Biz is currently offering Computer
Repair and Tune-Ups along with many other services.
The Computer Lady is offering a special on tuneups to speed up those sluggish systems that can test
anyone’s patience. For the $40 special, Connie will
clean unwanted information and spyware from your
computer, check settings, verify & run needed updates,
check the internal battery, clean inside of the pc tower Computer Lady Connie Markham-Price
(laptops excluded) and visually inspect the computer hardware and scan for viruses (virus
removal may or may not include an additional fee - of course we will notify you of the need
for more aggressive measures before charging more). For those who would like to know,
I will even show you two ways you can keep your computer running better on your own.
You will leave with a system that is guaranteed to run faster and manifest fewer “issues”.
Along with the repair and tune-ups, The Computer Lady will be offering a drop off point
for old systems (working and non-working). Recycling old systems keeps reusabel and
sometimes hazardous materials from adding to our landfills. The only limit on recycled
items, at present, is that no more than one old CRT monitor be brought in with each system
recycled. The shop owner does request additional software, cords, etc. be included with
the recycled items when possible. Empty and unused ink cartridges are welcome as well.
Other services covered include, but are not limited to: data recovery, data backup, internet
connection issues, black and white copies made, internet access available in the shop for a
reasonable per/hour charge, online bill-pay assistance, home network setup, used computer
sales, new computer orders, used parts for sale on-site, new parts ordered, and one-on-one
tutoring and classes (to be announced).
ComputerLady.Biz shop hours are Tuesday thru Saturday, 10 am to 7 pm, closed on
Sunday and Monday. Contact Connie for an appointment to clean up that computer at

Eagleville Girl Scout Troop 1588
Prepares for Girl Scouts 100th Birthday
Troop 1588 is having a Yard Sale, Bake Sale and Craft Sale on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011
from 8 am to 2 pm at the Eagleville Community Center. All proceeds go the girls to help
pay for their trip to Savannah, Georgia this coming June for the 100th Birthday of Girls

Girl Scout Troop 1588 recently attended a self defense class at Bill Taylor’s Bushido School of
Karate. They were taught basic skills to help in defending themselves from an attacker. The girls
were very appreciative of the opportunity given to them from Bill Taylor!

41A, South (across from Sewell’s Grocery) for any pictures and
articles that you would like featured in the Eagleville Times. The
mailbox is checked daily. Also, if you have pictures that have not
been returned to you by the Eagleville Times, these will be available

A Step Back in Time
When old photographs surface, old
memories also emerge. This certainly
happened recently when an old photograph
was given to a member of the Crosslin
family. The only known picture of one of
the peddling wagons that was operated by
the Crosslin Supply Company brought back
memories, not only to family members, but
to area residents, who have memories of
those days, gone by.
Many of the “new comers” to Eagleville
probably never heard of Crosslin Supply
Company ever been affiliated with any
business other than the lumber and building
supplies. Mr. Frank Crosslin, the proprietor
of Crosslin Supply Company, was a
business man who opened up opportunities
for many area residents. His foresight
in the business aspect of Eagleville was
certainly an asset to this community as
well as surrounding communities.
When Reverend R. C. Crosslin, arrived in
Eagleville as the new Eagleville Methodist
Church Pastor, no one envisioned the
impact this family would have on the
Eagleville Community. Arriving in the
Spring of 1931, with Reverend Crosslin,
was his wife, Sudie and six of their eight
children; Cecile Maxine, Sudie Ione, Ethel
Margaret, Vera Lee, Lillian Mozelle and
Richard Claude. His two eldest sons, Frank
E. and Joseph were working for their uncles,
hauling chickens and eggs to Florida and
returning to Tennessee with citrus fruits to
sell at local markets. But later, they too,
settled in Eagleville, raised their family
and became successful businessmen of
the area. After seven years, Reverend and
Mrs. Crosslin left the Eagleville Church
for another appointment. After the death
of her husband, Mama Sudie, as she was
affectionately called, returned and made
her home in Eagleville.
In 1933, soon after Frank E Crosslin
married his sweetheart of six months, Mary
Esther Taliaferro, he opened a small store,
Eagleville Produce Company, on the south
end of Eagleville, near the present Lamp
Shop. As their business grew, they moved
up the street to the old two-story Sullivan
Store building on the south-east corner of
Highway 99 and Main Street where they
continued to sell groceries, bought and
sold chickens and eggs.
In July 1939, Frank Crosslin and wife, Mary
Esther purchased a little more than an acre
of property located on the east side of Main
Street, between the Alfred Elmore property
and Church Street, from Mrs. Myrtle McRae
Boso. This property was previously owned
by Mrs. Boso, John Redmon, J. D. Smith
and E. L. McGown who purchased it from
J. W. Mitchell in 1891.
Soon the Crosslin family moved into the
house located on this property. To allow
the construction of a new store building,
on this newly acquired property, the house
was moved to another location on the lot,
facing Church Street. Nancy Crosslin Davis
remembers their home being moved very
slowly while the family continued to live
in it. (The house has been torn down and
storage buildings built on the location.)
In 1940 Frank Crosslin started construction
on a building to house his grocery, feed,
seed and produce business. A portion of
this construction was done with labor from

prisoners who were housed at Camp Forest
in Tullahoma Tennessee. Many of these
prisoners were civilian detainees who were
arrested at the outbreak of the war under
a program called “Alien Enemy Control”.
Many of these internees were incarcerated
without legal process.
Government
documents indicate that over 25,000 Alien
Enemies were held at various locations
throughout the United States at this time.
Camp Forest’s population was over 700.
While detained, these prisoners became
laborers in hospitals, businesses, farms and
often transported to other locations in the
state. Mary Esther Crosslin would often
prepare meals for the laborers while they
were working on this building. Local farmers
in the area also benefited from the prisoner
labor, planting and harvesting crops. At one
time, Mr. John Bowling was in charge for
the transportation of the prisoners.
After the completion of the building, it
has housed several different businesses in
addition to a grocery store, feed and seed,
lumber and building supplies operated by
the Crosslins. Listed below are only a
few of the businesses that operated in this
location.
Ethel Margaret, sister to Mr. Frank and
husband Troy Estes opened a restaurant in
the south end of this building, which was in
operation for several years. In 1949, Sue
Puckett and Mary Lou Crosslin had a gift
shop in a section on the north end of the
building. Also the north corner was used by
Bud Walker as a barber shop and after the
fire in 1952 that destroyed the Eagleville
post office, as well as other businesses; the
post office was located there until a new
one could be built.
A section of this building was also the
first home to the Eagleville, Rutherford
County Co-op which opened in 1956 with
Edward Lee Manier as manager. Some of
the early workers were Herman Leverette,
Fred Taylor, Mutt Scott, Fred Comstalk,
Jerry Giles and Herman Tucker. The Coop moved to its present location in 1967.
During World War II, when building
products were hard to obtain, Mr. Frank
saw the need to add lumber and building

materials to his company inventory. This was
the beginning of Crosslin Supply Company
as a lumber and building supply company in
addition to the grocery and produce business
which was housed in approximately the
middle section of the building.
Crosslin added three rolling stores, which
were called “Peddling Wagons”. They
traveled around the country roads, selling
grocery items such as coffee, sugar, fresh
fruits and other items in exchange for cash,
chicken, eggs and other locally produced
items. Many country residents depended
on this service for obtaining needed items
for daily living. The drivers would often
take orders for needed items from their
customers, and deliver them on their return
trip which was usually the next week.
The first peddling wagons were driven by
Powell Taliaferro, Joe and Frank Crosslin.
Nancy Crosslin Davis remembers her
job relating to the peddling wagons, was to
replenish the supplies, when they returned
to the store after their daily run. She would
weigh and sack up sugar, flour, meal and
other items to be loaded on the peddling
wagon for the next day.
Growing up in Eagleville, one of my most
vivid memories of the Crosslin Grocery was
the Saturday night drawings. During the
week, customers buying groceries, would
sign their name on pieces of paper and drop
them into a large container. On Saturday
night, a drawing was held and baskets of
groceries and/or cash were given to the
lucky winners whose names were drawn
out. During this time, Eagleville would
be a very busy place. One could hardly
find a parking place on either side of the
street. Not only hoping to be a winner, but
this was also a great time for friends and
neighbors to gather and visit. Although the
Crosslin Supply Company, no longer exist
in Eagleville, the building still brings back
a lot of memories.
I want to thank the children of Frank and
Mary Esther; Nancy Sue, Martha Kay and
Esther for sharing this part of Eagleville
history with the Eagleville Times. (Frank
Jr., their brother, is deceased.) As you
see, one photograph can bring back many
memories of the past. If anyone would like

Wayford (Bill) Berry.
Chase is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Swanner of Athens, Al, Mrs. Carolyn
Newton of Madison, AL, and Ruth Marsh and the late Raymond Marsh of Madison, AL.
The wedding is planned for November 12 at First Bible Church in Decatur, AL.

One of my favorite Bible verses at this time of
year comes from Psalm 103. “Bless the Lord,
o my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” In
the six months that I have called Rockvale
and Eagleville my home, I have found more
benefits and blessings than I could begin to
count. I marvel at the men and women who staff
Eagleville School. They believe in what they are
doing and they believe in our children. Walking
through the halls, you can hear and see the sounds
of learning, caring and sharing in action.
I had only been here a few weeks when I met
the mayor and he showed me around a huge log
building that they were remodeling. Not that
many days ago, it was dedicated as the new city
hall. You can sense the vision, hopes and dreams
people have for our area and their desire to see
it grow.
One of the places that made me feel at home
very fast was the Main Street Café. Those red
headed brothers are an amazing bunch. Their
staff is hard working and if you come on the
weekends don’t be surprised if you see wives
and children helping out too. I understand they
are new this year. I love to see people who have
dreams and ideas not be afraid to pull them
I came from a small city. It’s been an
adjustment to country roads. One day a horse
came running down the road without a rider.
I tracked the horse back, found the girls that
were with it and made sure they both got home.
Mom was so kind to this strange preacher. The
little girl ended up with a broken arm. It was a
different way of meeting the neighbors.
The Fourth of July picnic was so much fun.
The softball tournament, the games, the food,
and the different groups all pulling together were
great. If you saw a deep fat fryer explode a little
that was me cooking some frozen French fries. I
learned a lot about Rockvale that day.
All I want you to think about as you read this is
how blessed we are to live where we are and how
blessed we are to share life with the people that
we do. God has been faithful to us in so many
ways. Every once in a while it helps to just plain
count your blessings. I don’t know about the
church you may call home. I can only speak to
my family of faith. I hope yours is one of your
heart’s thankful benefits. I know mine is. I am so
thankful to be a part of the Eagleville-Rockvale
community. It’s my hope to share the Lord’s love
with as many as I can. He is the reason we all
have to be thankful!

Heart of the Homestead

As wives and mothers we set the mood
in our homes. If we wake up crabby or in a
bad mood you can bet that our children and
husbands will soon be in bad moods also. I
know from experience and it is a bad habit
to get into. Complaining all the time can
be nothing more that a habit that we find
ourselves in. With Thanksgiving upon us we
should do more to have a thankful spirit and
this will pour over into our families attitude.
We should look at our role as homemakers
as the greatest privilege that we can have.
Let’s take this role seriously and not only
perform our job with competence but let’s
truly enjoy it. When people look at us and
our homes they should not only see us
surviving, they should see us thriving and
full of life.
The most important tool we have is our
attitude. If we feel overworked, underpaid
or not appreciated we will soon start to feel
sorry for ourselves. Instead, let’s enjoy our
role and look at our tasks as an opportunity
to serve those we love more than anything,
our families. Yes it’s true, we will never
be done with the mountain we call
laundry, the clean dishes will be dirty
again tomorrow, the dust will cover our
tables next week or probably sooner. But
as you are doing these tasks think of your
family and all the ways you are blessing
them. You are giving them a cozy home
that they will draw strength and memories
from in the years to come. Every small
task fits into the big picture and will not go
unnoticed. Just because they don’t say it,
doesn’t mean they don’t notice.
Let’s not wait for New Years to make a
resolution to be more grateful for this role
as “Keeper of the Home.” It is a great task
that you are entrusted with. Enjoy it!
In this issue I will include a recipe
that my family has come to love, “Bacon
Wrapped Meat Loaf.” Even those who
snarl up their nose to meat loaf, love this
because of the bacon and tangy sauce.
I serve it with creamy mashed potatoes.
I got this recipe from thepioneerwoman.
com. She also has a cookbook out called
The Pioneer Woman Cooks. This recipe is
also in the cookbook.
MEATLOAF
1 Cup Milk
6 Bread Slices
2 Lbs. ground beef
1 Cup grated Parmesan Cheese
1 tsp.salt
1\4 tsp. seasoned salt
ground black pepper
1\4 cup miced flat leaf parsley
4 eggs beaten
8 to 12 thin bacon slices
GRAVY
1 1\2 cup ketchup
6 TBSP Brown sugar
1 tsp. dry mustard
Pour milk over the bread and let soak for
several minutes. Add the rest of the meat loaf
ingredients except the bacon and mix well with
hands . Form a loaf and put on a broiler pan to
let fat from the meat drain through. After loaf is
formed lay the bacon slices over the top and
tucking them under the meatloaf. Mix the gravy
ingredients in a bowl and place half the gravy
mixture over the meatloaf.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. Pour
some more gravy over the meatloaf and make
for an additional 15 minutes. If you have any
more gravy that you haven’t used, you can use
as a dipping sauce.

Monday, October 24, 2011 in Franklin.
A native of Bedford County, Harold was
a son of the late Harvey Ransom and
Annie Maude Hoover Jones. Mr. Jones
retired from the U.S. Air Force after 23
years of service during which he served
in World War II, the Korean War and the
Vietnam War. During his service he spent
22 months as a Prisoner of War in North
Korea. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Jones was preceded in death by his wife,
Margaret Laird Jones who died in 1999; 2
sisters, Jeanette Fuller and Pearl Uselton;
4 brothers, Emmett, Richard, Edward and
Arthur Jones; a grandchild, Shelia Pulsinelli
and a great grandchild, Haley Pulsinelli.

Mrs.
Hardison was born in Williamson County
and was a daughter of the late Willie A.

Hardison was a member of the College
Grove United Methodist Church and
the College Grove Senior Citizens, now
known as Fifty Forward Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband

Rosco “Whack” Perrell who died in 2005.

Jonathan “Johnny” Haywood, Jr.,
James Elliott Fagan, age 87, of age 63, of Chapel Hill, died Tuesday,
Eagleville, Tennessee, died Thursday,
October 20, 2011 in Eagleville. Mr.
Fagan was born in Marshall County
and was a son of the late Owen Elliott
and Mamie Lou Dean Fagan. He was a
decorated World War II veteran serving
in the United States Army during the
European Campaign. Mr. Fagan was a
former manufacturing methods engineer
for Litton Industries in Maryland. After
moving back to Tennessee, he followed
his passion as a cattle and tobacco farmer.
Mr. Fagan was a member of the Eagleville
Lions Club and was the former song
leader at Eagleville Church of Christ,
where he was a member. He was preceded
in death by a brother, Edwin Fagan, and
a sister, Dorothy Dean Cunningham.
Mr. Fagan is survived by his wife of 67
years, Norma Jean Fagan, Eagleville;
daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Larry
Witte, Murfreesboro; two grandchildren,
Laura (Jerry) Buchanan, Franklin, Lisa
(Gerard) Masse, Lexington, KY; four great
grandsons, Justin, Joshua, Jason and Gavin.
September 27, 2011. A native of Chapel
Hill, Mr. Haywood was the son of the late
John Mayberry Haywood and Anna Louise
Harrison. He was a retired tool and die
maker for Vought Industries in Nashville,
a member of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans and was a veteran of the U. S.
Army having served in Vietnam where he
received the Bronze Star Medal for Valor.

I’m from an old, squeaky playhouse made of brown wood and sitting
behind my 4-foot-deep pool.

Hope Hill Children’s Home was started in 1960 in Hope, KY. It began as an orphanage to
take care of boys and girls who did not have a family. Over time, it has become an all girls’
residential program with 45 female residents ranging in age from 13-18. It also has a foster care
program for 30 males and females.
During the time that they are at Hope Hill, they live in group homes with heating and cooling,
have three meals a day, go to school in an on site school, and most importantly, experience a
loving, Christian environment that most of them have never known before.
Hope Hill is truly a blessing and wonderful ministry that is changing the lives of many teens
who would likely otherwise spend a life full of struggle.

Howard W. Hatcher, a 1953 Eagleville
High School graduate and author, will
conduct a book signing at the Eagleville
City Hall from 9:00 AM until noon
on November 12. Mr. Hatcher’s first
book, “Granddaddy Tell Me a Story,”
was published in 2010. It consists of
a collection of short stories about six
sons of a proud couple who lost their
home after the 1929 financial collapse.

FCE Meets On Strategies For Safety Eagleville Troop 123 Goes To Shiloh
EAGLEVILLE TIMES

On October 18, the Eagleville FCE Club conducted a meeting for the community on
safety in the home, in public, and financial safety, with speaker Eagleville Police Chief
George Barrett.
The Eagleville FCE Club is 77 years old and the oldest FCE Club in Rutherford County.
Club projects that the community may help with are: collecting pull tabs, greeting card
fronts, used postage stamps, campbell soup labels and small medical equipment. For

Over Fall Break Eagleville Troop 123 went to Shiloh National Military Park. The Troop
camped for three nights just outside of the park at the Battlefield Campground. Friday
and Saturday the Troop hike through the battlefield, learning how the battle started and
progressed, and how it ended. One hike the troop learned about artillery that was used
during the battle. One cannon located in the park was used at the battle of Fort Donelson,
Shiloh, and Vicksburg. The troop hike just a little over 22 miles over. Sunday morning
the troop dressed in Class A uniforms attended the Shiloh Methodist Church, it is actually
located inside the park, and served as a hospital during the two days of the battle. At
Shiloh the Scouts had many learning experiences about the battle, the men who fought
there, and equipment used during the Civil War. They learned the value of team work,
cooperation, and physical endurance; it took all three of these to get through 22 miles of
hiking. Through team work the Troop members became closer than before. Through
team work they were able to set up camp before dark, cooked meals for the troop, and
cleaning up afterwards. The Troop believes it is a trip worth doing again.

Little Stories About You & Me

Finding Your Rhythm
Many of us will say
we are rhythmically
challenged, meaning
we are not trained
to play a musical
instrument or we
have never learned to cha cha cha or to
dance the smooth 1-2-3 beat of a waltz.
In our busy, noisy mechanized world few
of us hear or even recognize the natural
rhythms of nature such as rain, thunder,
wind, birds chirping, animals calling,
insects clicking or waves lapping. And,
we are never still long enough to get in
touch with our own heartbeat.
A sense of rhythm is a sense of life and
rejuvenation that is essential to a wellbalanced, integrated, successful partnership
with life. Many cultures have recognized
the importance of the drum beat as an aid
to finding our internal rhythm.
For three decades now drums have echoed
through the crisp colored leaves in Middle
Tennessee State parks as North American
natives have presented their heritage
and honored their ancestors. They hold
events all over the United States where
they participate in drumming, singing
and dancing as contestants for prize
money. Arts, crafts, jewelry, pottery and
food enrich the event. The fry bread was
especially good.
The first Pow Wow in Middle Tennessee
was held thirty years ago at a Mt. Juliet
saddle club with only friends and family
attending. Last year 12,000 came to Long
Hunter State Park and this year promised
to be even better.
Mayekan (Wolf) Mistakwakihk, AKAKeith Sharphead, is a Plains Cree Indian
from Alberta Canada. He said the “white
man” calls him Keith because they can’t
pronounce his real name. Mayekan has
been playing the drums since he was a
baby. He is now in his twenties, “drop
dead gorgeous”—bronze skin, long black
braids, and sparkling eyes. His father and
grandfather taught him to sing and play.
He said the pattern they drum is a “ruffle
or double beat.” It is supposed to mimic
the prairie chicken.
After repeating a rhythm pattern many
times it is easy to lose the since of time
and some say it creates a trance. Mayekan
said he prefers to use the term, “in the
zone.” Drumming helps him be in touch
with his culture and aids him with prayers
for his family and friends.
When asked about the healing benefits
of drumming, he said that sweat lodges
and the Sun Dance are used for healing.
However, the procedures are a secret and
a person can only participate by invitation
from a medicine man or medicine
woman.
Buddy Helm, in his book on drumming
said, drumming clears blockages in the
spinal sheath therefore causing both
physical and emotional healing. It’s
important to feel the rhythm and when
Mayekan spoke of drumming it was in
tandem with the dance.
The Cree are one of the largest groups
of “First Nations” in North America
with 200,000 living in Canada. Mayekan
travels with the troop, performing, but
also does construction work and speaks to
school children about his culture. He says,
“The drumbeat is the heartbeat of mother
earth.”

One Good Chair
My bedroom also
doubles as my office.
We do have an actual
office in our house,
but my husband’s
computer menagerie has been procreating,
it seems. He collects computer parts
and peripherals like some people collect
stamps or coins. Unfortunately, computer
parts do not fit neatly into an album. As a
result our office has become our computer
parts museum. He has everything from a
Commodore 64, still in its original box, to a
floppy drive from the Middle Ages.
My bedroom is the only remaining haven
where I can write, compose e-mails, and
conduct business (like making grocery
lists). It stands to reason that I would spend
a lot of time in there.
For this reason, I need a good chair. The
one I had was okay, but the cushioning had
gone flat and I had to place a small pillow
in the back for lumbar support. I think that
is where I keep my lumbar, anyway.
This situation was okay, but not ideal.
I would have kept my chair if my husband’s
chair didn’t break. It was the second chair
he had broken in two years. I saw his
misfortune as my ticket to a new chair. The
plan? He could take my old chair and I
would get a new one for my “office.”
Lest you think I was being selfish to
suggest this, you need to consider my
willingness to take his old iPhone when my
contract was up so that he could upgrade to
the new one.
We have a give and take relationship.
Sometimes he does the taking and
sometimes I do.
He wanted a new iPhone. I wanted a new
chair.
Besides, men’s posteriors are accustomed
to sitting for hours on metal bleachers and
fishing boat benches. My chair with its 1/2
inch of padding would be no sacrifice for
my husband.
In fact, because he is over 6 feet tall,
his lumbar would probably be at least six
inches above mine. If my old chair had any
support at all, it would fit his lumbar much
better than mine.
Finding a chair that would fit me,
however, proved to be quite a challenge.
Not only was I looking for more padding in
the seat and built-in lumbar support for my
irregularly shaped behind, but it seemed the
more chairs in which I sat, the more features
I decided I needed.
The first one that drew my eyes was
an executive chair with fine Corinthian
leather. It may have been “pleather” for
all I know, but it looked like something in
which Ricardo Montalban would sit, behind
a monstrous mahogany desk. No matter
that my “desk” was actually a plastic card
table, complete with a calendar, a grammar
cheat sheet, a card with the warning signs
for a heart attack, various scraps of paper
with information I don’t want to forget, and
pictures my children have drawn for me
over the past 5 years, scotch-taped to the
wall behind it.
Yeah, okay, leather was too cold to sit
on anyway. I needed a cloth chair. A high
back would be nice, too, in case I wanted to
rest my head. Truthfully, if I wanted to rest
my head, I could walk 5 feet to my left and
crawl into my bed. However, writers have
to be disciplined. I can’t lie down simply
because I’m tired. If I had a “real” job,
I’d be fired. So, I decided a high back is a
must. I wouldn’t want to be forced to fire
myself. It would be awkward.
Armrests are really unnecessary, but they
are a luxury I can’t resist. I thought it would
be nice to not have to support my arms all
by myself. Sometimes you just have to
pamper yourself.
When I finally lit on a chair that met my
many criteria, I bought it and brought it home.
To add extra fuel to the fire of my husband’s
envy, I asked him to help me build it.
I could see that he was as jealous of my
new chair as I was of his new iPhone, but
he took my old chair, knowing that his
only other option was perching on one of
his 1980’s CRT monitors. Considering his
habit of breaking chairs, he wouldn’t want
to take that chance with the contents of his
computer museum.

Eagleville Middle School Basketball

The smell of popcorn in the air, whistle blows and sneakers sliding across the gym floor usually means one thing.
It’s basketball season again in Eagleville! It’s the sport that carries us through the winter after the end of football
and the beginning of baseball and softball. Perhaps most enjoyed because it’s played inside in the comfort of the
Eagleville High School gym. Yes folks, let the fast paced games begin!
The start of the 2011-2012 Eagleville Middle School Eagles boys and girls games were much anticipated this
year. With several returning players on both squads the teams should have another great year. The 13 player girl’s
team is coached by Michael
McClaran and assistant coach
Michelle Curtis. The boy’s
team carries 16 players on
their roster and is coached by
Jennifer Snell and assistant
coach Alan Pepper.
Both teams opened their
seasons with a win at Moore
County on October 17th.
Moore County, a long time
Eagleville rival put up a good
fight but they were no match
for our Eagles.
Both teams would like to
invite you out to catch a game.
While you’re there plan
on visiting the concession
stand and try out one of their
county wide known bake
potatoes. You won’t leave
hungry if you do!

signing 2012 calendars. This fundraiser
money goes entirely to the donkey club for
promoting miniature donkey awareness
and welfare. Lightfoot will give free cart
rides with each calendar purchase!

The breakfast is all you can eat for $5. A
family cost is $20, children 12 and under $3,
and children 3 and under eat free. Breakfast
will be served from 7:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.
Rummage Sale items include glassware,
collectible items, fabrics and crafts and
other gently used items. All proceeds from
the breakfast and rummage sale benefit
FiftyForward College Grove. Make sure

Easy Slow Cooker Pot Roast
WHAT YOU NEED
4 pounds chuck roast
salt and pepper to taste
1 packet dry onion soup mix
1 cup water
3 carrots, chopped
1 onion, chopped
3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 stalk celery, chopped
MAKE IT
Take the chuck roast and season with salt and
pepper to taste. Brown on all sides in a large
skillet over high heat.
Place in the slow cooker and add the soup mix,
water, carrots, onion, potatoes and celery.
Cover and cook on low setting for 8 to 10
hours.
