2 - Head of School’s Letter
Thirty-three years ago, I was a child attending Chicago
Public Schools and my mother said to me, “Next
year, you’re going to Marmion.” “Marmion? What’s
Marmion?” I asked her, as Aurora, IL might as well
have been Alaska for all I knew.
I reflect on that conversation often, thinking of the path my life has taken me and now
realize that this was God’s plan all along. While, many times I didn’t understand it, I always
prayed that the Lord would lead me in the right direction. And here I am full circle, thirtythree years later, leading the school that I once called home. I was a boarder at Marmion
Military Academy, cared for by the monks who selflessly gave their lives to make men out
of the boys who entered each year.
I attended Illinois State University where I majored in biology with a secondary education
endorsement. After graduation, as fate would have it, Marmion had an opening and I was
hired to teach physics and later biology. I stayed for nineteen years and assumed many
different roles including Dorm Prefect, coach, Department Chairperson, and Dean of
Students. I am so grateful for those years and the countless memories that were made, many
of which I still cherish today. While teaching, I received my Master’s Degree in Educational
Administration from North Central University in Naperville. In 2009, I left Marmion to
serve as principal at Guerin College Preparatory High School in River Grove. As hard as it
was to leave, I realize now that it was part of God’s plan. I was away for three years when
the call came again, this time it was back to the Academy. And here I am today, writing this
letter, humbled, excited and eager for this tremendous opportunity.
The three pillars of Marmion’s mission – faith, academics and leadership – will continue to
be my focus as we provide a challenging 21st century education for our young men - an
education that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving and digital literacy with the
same Benedictine values that were instilled in me so many years ago. The monks and
the Benedictine charism are what make Marmion a unique and special place – it is the
“Marmion Difference”.
I recently asked a senior to speak briefly at one of our monthly Pride Assemblies and provide
some advice to the underclassman. He said that Marmion is a family, and that the students
should embrace the wonderful opportunity they have to be a part of it. He further described
the “Marmion Difference” as something you cannot explain, rather it is something that you
have to live, to experience. It is now my responsibility to make sure that this experience
continues, but I cannot do it alone. It will take a joint effort from all of us to further what
the monks started 80 years ago in Aurora. We are all part of the Marmion Family and it is
through an active partnership that we can assure that Catholic Benedictine 21st Century
education continues for generations to come.
May God bless you and your families.
Respectfully,
Anthony Tinerella ‘84

A New Organizational Structure
by: Madelyn Weed, Director of Advancement
Abbot John Brahill OSB ’67, at the recommendation of
the Board of Trustees, implemented a new organizational
structure of Marmion Academy to strengthen the mission
of the Academy, clarify duties and help the institution run
more effectively. Abbot John established the position of
Head of School, who will have the overall responsibility
of the leadership and administration of all aspects of
Marmion Academy and will report directly to the Abbot.
As of July 1 this position was filled by Anthony Tinerella
’84. Mr. Tinerella will be hiring a Principal who will serve
as the chief academic officer of the Academy as it relates
to the educational and formational needs of the students.
Until that position is filled, Mr. Tinerella will handle those
responsibilities.
Another change included the renaming of the Development
Office, which will now be known as the Advancement
Office. In addition to fund-raising efforts for the Academy,
Abbey and Guatemala Mission, the Advancement Office
will also be charged with advancing the mission of these
three entities via marketing, communications and strategic
planning.
The offices of the Principal, Advancement and Treasurer
will report directly to the Head of the School in all matters
relating to the Academy. Advancement along with the
Treasurer’s Office report to the Abbot on all other matters
related to the Abbey.
Mr. Tinerella has assembled a Leadership Team which
will focus on the educational needs of the students and
enhanced support for the Treasurer and Advancement
offices in their financial, fund-raising and marketing
functions for the Academy. The Leadership Team includes
Mr. Tinerella (Head of School), Fr. Michael Burrows OSB ’70
(Abbey Liason), Jennifer Schmidt (Treasurer) and Madelyn
Weed (Director of Advancement).
“I have great confidence in this
team and will be drawing upon their
expertise to help further the mission
of the Academy and move us to the
next level as an institution,”
~ Anthony Tinerella ‘84,
Head of School
Abbot John made clear that these changes do not entail any
additional budgetary costs for the Academy. The Board of
Trustees, as is currently the case, will remain an advisory
board to the Abbot, President of Marmion Abbey and
Academy.
One-to-One Technology Coming to Marmion
Studies show that students in the Age of Technology learn differently
than students of just 15 years ago. Today’s students physiologically
analyze and process material significantly different than students
of the past and the use of technology has become an integral part of
their life.
Technology usage within the daily classroom experience allows
instructors to adapt to the varying learning styles of the students
in the classroom. Technology also allows instruction that stimulates
higher level analysis and cognitive development.
Your donation is essential to create a
technology-rich environment for our Cadets.
$91,000: Wi-Fi throughout all classrooms
$90,000: Provide MacBooks for faculty/administration
$46,000: Compatible cables and projectors in classrooms
$30,000: Hardware to support increased use
$22,000: Updated equipment in Alumni Hall and Koch Theatre

Marmion is dedicated to providing the best Catholic,
Benedictine, college-prep education for the 21st century
learner. Integrating One-to-One Technology into the
curriculum is an essential part. “One-to-One Technology is
an initiative that will provide a wireless computing device
for every student and teacher. This will allow Marmion to
enhance the learning process by providing access to unlimited
interactive, educational resources,” stated Anthony Tinerella,
Marmion’s Head of School.

Br. Theodore Haggerty
Br. Antony Maria Minardi ‘08
Br. Oscar Hernandez ‘06
Three Novices Profess Temporary Vows
Three novices, who began their novitiate year together on
July 10, 2012, made their first profession of vows for three
years as monks of Marmion Abbey on July 11. There is a
venerable monastic tradition to take a new name in order
to better reflect their commitment to let Christ live in them.
They had the option of retaining their baptismal names or
of choosing a new monastic name - all three have chosen a
new monastic name by which they will now be known.
Novice Patrick Haggerty (age 26) is from Mt. Pleasant MI
where he was a member of St. Mary’s University Parish.
He is a graduate of Niagara University NY with a degree
in sport management. He has chosen the name of Br.
Theodore. St. Theodore the Studite was the abbot of the
Stoudios monastery in Constantinople. He was known as
a man of zeal, especially for defending the faith and for
the use of iconography in the faith. He was a theologian, a
monastic founder, and a man of letters. Br. Theodore’s feast
day will be celebrated on November 12.
Novice Joseph Minardi ‘08 (age 23), from Yorkville and a
member of St. Patrick Parish, began his novitiate year after
graduating from the University of Dallas with a degree in
philosophy in May 2012. He has chosen the name of Br.
Antony Maria. St. Anthony of the Desert, also known as St.
Anthony of Egypt or St. Anthony the Great, is also known
by the name Antony (no “h”). Br. Antony’s second chosen
name, Maria, was chosen out of a personal devotion to
Mary, Mother of God. Br. Antony Maria’s feast day will be
on January 17.
Novice Daniel Hernandez ‘06 (age 25), from Geneva and a
member of St. Peter’s Parish, has a degree in theater from St.
Ambrose University. He has chosen the name of Br. Oscar
in honor of two separate people. The first is St. Ansgar (also
known as St. Oscar), “Apostle of the North,” a Benedictine
monk of Corbie Abbey in the 9th century who later
became archbishop of Hamburg and a missionary to the
Scandinavian peoples. The second is Bishop Oscar Romero
of San Salvador, a man outspoken in defense of the faith
of the poor and of the persecuted, who was assassinated
while saying Mass in a Catholic hospital on March 24, 1980.
Bishop Oscar Romero’s cause for beatification was accepted
by the Vatican in 1997 and is still pending today. Br. Oscar’s
feast day will be celebrated on February 3, the feast day St.
Oscar, Apostle of the North. Once Bishop Oscar Romero
is beatified, Br. Oscar will take that day as his feast day
(presumably March 24).
Br. Theodore, Br. Antony Maria and Br. Oscar will all begin
their studies for the priesthood at Saint Meinrad School of
Theology in St. Meinrad IN this fall.
Fr. Paul Weberg Stationed at
Ford Hood TX
4 - Abbey
Fr. Paul Weberg OSB, an Army chaplain, is now stationed at Fort Hood
TX with the 89th Military Police Brigade. This brigade has units located
at three different military installations in the U.S. in addition to one
currently deployed. He will be providing Catholic religious support
to the 40,000+ soldiers and their families as well as to the Department
of Defense civilians who are assigned to Ft. Hood. This is a three year
assignment.
Guatemala Mission Alumni Ordained
by: Abbot John Brahill OSB ‘67
First Guatemala Alumnus to be Appointed Bishop
On May 4, 2013, Father Domingo Buezo Leiva was ordained a bishop in the Diocese
of Izabal, Guatemala. Bishop Buezo Leiva is the first alumnus of Marmion Abbey’s
Guatemala Mission minor seminary, Colegio Seminario San José, to be appointed
a bishop.
Bishop Buezo Leiva was born in 1962 in the village of Los Horcones, in the
department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. He attended Colegio Seminario San José
from 1978-1980. Later, after completing philosophical and theological studies
in Guatemala City at the Salesian Institute of Philosophy and Theology, he was
ordained a priest for the Diocese of Zacapa, Guatemala, in November of 1988. In
the years after his ordination to the priesthood until 2009 he served as assistant
pastor and pastor in various parishes in the diocese. In 1996 – 1997 he studied in Rome and earned a Licentiate in Sacred
Theology. He was also the founder and director of the Diocesan Radio PAX station and director of the diocesan office of
Caritas (Catholic Charities). His cousin, Brother Abraham Buezo OSB is a member of the Abbey of Jesucristo Crucificado in
Esquipulas, Guatemala.
Bishop Buezo’s episcopal ordination is a blessing for our Guatemala mission and a clear sign of God’s blessings on Marmion
Abbey’s Guatemala missionary work over the years. We ask for your prayers for God’s blessings on the episcopal ministry
of Bishop Buezo. Your prayers are also requested for the many other graduates of Marmion’s Guatemala mission seminary,
both priests and laity, as well as for its current students.
Ordination of Seminary Alumnus
During the past 48 years one of the great blessings received
by our Guatemala mission is the ordination of many of our
alumni to the priesthood. On February 16, alumnus Fredy
William Méndez López ‘02 (below) was ordained as a priest
in his hometown of San Pedro Saloma in the Diocese of
Huehuetenango. Bishop Álvaro Ramazzini Imeri, Bishop of
the Diocese of Huehuetenango ordained Father Méndez in
the parish of St. Peter the Apostle with his family, friends
and parishioners present. Father Méndez will serve in the
Diocese of Huehuetenango where there are many other
priests who are also graduates of our minor seminary.
Marmion Academy’s mission team of 11 traveled to
Guatemala to build homes with Habitat for Humanity.
They stayed at the San José Priory and Colegio in
Quetzaltenango. They had the opportunity to tour the
historic churches, ruins, and towns of the area.

The 51st annual Salute to Youth was held at Drury Lane in
Oakbrook Terrace on April 27, 2013. It was co-chaired by Carl
and Kelly Deufel ‘77. The guest list included 727 alumni, trustees,
patrons, seniors and their escorts. This year’s Salute to Youth
raised $311,628 to benefit Marmion’s educational programs.
Salute General Chaircouple Carl and Kelly Deufel ‘77 with Carl’s father
Dan Deufel (left) and Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ‘59. Fr. Charles
was honored for his 40+ years of service to the Abbey and Academy.
Fr. Charles Reichenbacher, O.S.B. ’59 was honored at this year’s
Salute to Youth. He has been a familiar face connected to Marmion
for over a half century. Most notably has been his work in the
Development office since 1971. In 1985 Fr. Charles was appointed
Director of Development and under his leadership, Marmion’s
Development program became a model for many other private
educational and religious institutions. Fr. Charles oversaw a
number of capital campaigns for the physical expansion of the
Abbey, the Academy, and the mission priory and seminary in
Guatemala; the growth of endowment funds; and annual fund
support. These gift funds total over $62 million in his 43 years of
development work.
Fr. Charles’ personal investment in establishing a network of relationships with alumni and benefactors has been of inestimable value to
Marmion. As he now takes on the role of Associate Director of Development, the Marmion family can with good cause give thanks for the
legacy of work and loyalty that has marked his years of service to Marmion Abbey, Guatemala Mission and the Academy.
The student speaker this year was Jackson Rettig ‘13. To honor the theme “Family & Faith” of the 51st Salute to Youth he began, “You
don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them. – Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa”
“When I say the words ‘The Marmion Family’ what comes to your
mind? Is it the teachers and friends you’ve come to know? Or is
it special moments or experiences that you treasure? Now look
around. Tonight is a wonderful tradition of a special family – a
family more than 80 years in the making – the Marmion family.”
“What makes a group of people a family? As people of faith, we
believe as the Book of Genesis says, ‘God created mankind in his
image and likeness.’ From our very beginning, God made us and
placed us among others who He intended JUST FOR US.”
“But ‘families’ are often more than those into which you are born.
God also chooses other individuals for us to love, challenge and
care for … for all of us here today … Marmion is Family.”
Randall Gibson ‘13 was the Student Master of Ceremonies and he
introduced the seniors and their escorts who went through the
“arch of sabers” to be presented to those in attendance.
“Tonight is
a wonderful
tradition of a
special family – a
family more than
80 years in the
making –
the Marmion
family.”
~ Jackson Rettig ‘13
Senior Jackson Rettig’s heartwarming
oration on “Family & Faith” is

Movie “Iron Man” Inspires Senior Research Project
Senior Max Meyer’s idea for his senior research project
started years before he even knew he would be doing a
senior research project. “My idea for the EXBA (EXternal
Body Amplification) started after I saw the movie “Iron
Man” in 2008. When I was watching Tony Stark on the
silver screen in his suit that deflects bullets and allows him
to lift incredible weight and even fly, I thought to myself
‘how hard can it be to make an iron man suit?’. Turns out,
it’s really hard,” said Meyer.
While researching his project, Meyer discovered the
Pneumatic Muscle Actuator (PMA). The PMA mimics the
action of a muscle but it is powered by air instead of electric
impulses. Meyer incorporated PMAs into his design which
increased flexibility and reduced the cost and weight of his
suit design. PMAs can bend around corners, are inexpensive
and easily made, and are very light compared to traditional
pneumatic pistons. Therefore incorporating them into his
design resulted in a more flexible, cheaper and lighter suit.
“As an engineering project,
it is innovative how Max
uses air muscles like real
muscles and can use the
human body as a guide
to the best design. He is
attempting to ‘amplify’
human strength – an area
of interest for example,
healthcare workers, factory
workers, the elderly and many activities that require a
person to have strength amplification,” stated Dr. Vic Pinks
II ‘72, Meyer’s physics teacher and mentor.
Meyer began with building a single 20 inch muscle that
could lift 50 lbs on its own. He then continued building a

Past, Present, and Future Students Come Together
in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”
This past April, Marmion’s Drama Club presented “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The cast and crew
included 50 Marmion and Rosary students, 3 Marmion faculty members playing the role of the Pharoah (Anthony Tinerella
’84, Andy Damato ’01 and John Salomone), and 27 children ages 6 through 14 from various public and private local schools,
many of whom have family ties to either Rosary or Marmion and are likely future students.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat narrates the biblical story of Joseph (played by senior Javier Andujar)
and his prophetic dreams and multicolored coat. The narrators (Alexandra Joyce, Katelyn Jassoy, and Kate Jarecki) help
the audience follow the amazing story of Joseph’s jealous brothers selling him into slavery and the hardships, trials, and
successes Joseph endures as result.
With people’s love of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and the reputation that Marmion’s Drama Club
has garnered, this year’s production drew record numbers of audience members from throughout the Fox Valley area. An
average of 500 audience members were in attendance at each of the four performances. The Marmion theater program
continues to produce outstanding productions and continues to grow under the direction of Kristin Voris.

Cadets Spring Season Wrap-Up
by: Carmen Freda, Annual Giving Director
Track and Field: Faster Farther Higher
Marmion’s track team attained a dual meet record of 10-1
and won their 8th consecutive SCC Conference Championship when they destroyed runner-up ACC by more than 40
points. Junior John Graft (1600 meter run); juniors Kevin
and Andrew Grahovec, sophomore Jordan Sullivan and senior Peter West (4X400 relay); Graft, Kevin Grahovic, West
and junior Eric Lifka (4X800 relay); junior Tyler Maryanski
(high jump); and freshman Isaiah Brown (long jump) were
all crowned Conference Champs.
in the 400 meter dash (breaking his older brother’s record
by one-tenth of a second!) and Kevin again in the 800 meter
run with a time of 1:54.59 (at State meet).
Tennis: Another Historical Season
The Captains for this year’s squad were seniors Jackson
Rettig and Brett Koskinen and junior John Graft. Coach
John Tsang stated that, “A deep line of seniors graduated
last year, but we still have a strong core of competitive
players, along with some new faces to take the torch.”
Could they compete at the same level of excellence as in
2012? That question was definitely answered with a second
straight year undefeated in dual meet/matches (15-0) and
undefeated in conference for the third year in a row (8-0) for
a fifth straight SCC crown!
Rettig and Graft (First Doubles), juniors Ricky Angsten and
Kevin Hoss (Second Doubles), freshman Luke Hoss and
Koskinen (Third Doubles) and sophomore Dave Demoll
(Second Singles) were all crowned Conference Champions.
Three Marmion athletes (pictured above) qualified for the
3A IHSA State meet – Maryanski (high jump), Kevin Grahovic (800 meter run) and senior Jake Ruddy (long jump).
Maryanski finished in 10th place and both Grahovic (4th
place) and Ruddy (9th place) earned “All State” recognition.
Jake accomplished this after breaking both wrists and his
left forearm in an unfortunate fall during the basketball season after dunking a basketball.
Coach Dan Thorpe stated “We had 96 athletes who pushed
each other in practice since February 11. With our wonderful parents working all the events at our home meets, we
were prepared for the invitationals and peaked for the Conference meet. To have our 3 state qualifiers make it to the
Saturday finals was an impressive feat.”
Two school records were set this past season: Glenn Gilbert
Achievement Award winner Kevin Grahovec-50.6 seconds
14 - Sports
In the West Aurora Sectional, Marmion had 3 State qualifiers.
Rettig and Graft finished 2nd at the sectional and went through
the 4th consolation round at State while finishing 3-2 and were
overall 25-4 for the 2013 season. Rettig, the 2013 Fr. Columban
Achievement Award winner, is a 3-time State qualifier in First
Doubles with three different partners! Graft was able to compete
at this level while simultaneously being a member of the track
team. Freshman John King finished 4th at the sectional. He was
Marmion’s first freshman to qualify for the State meet.

Lacrosse: Mission Accomplished
Lacrosse once again had a successful year, but what was really special
about this year was that players started to see the fruits of their labor.
This year they reached particular milestones that will set the bar for all
the teams that follow. Senior Sam Ford was the first lacrosse player to be
nominated and selected for the prestigious US Lacrosse Illinois Chapter,
Academic All-American Award. Ford is one of only 9 varsity players in
Illinois to receive this award. Ford is also the first Marmion lacrosse player
Sam Ford ‘13 and Tyler Estes ‘13
to receive a scholarship; his scholarship was from Georgia Tech, a Division
1 Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse team that competes in the South East Lacrosse
Conference. Additionally, Tyler Estes, who was the MVP Award winner this year, will play goal for Regis University and
Angelo Carbonara will be representing his skills at Elmhurst College.
The team set a record off the field at “Feed My Starving Children” by packing a record 126 boxes of processed foods that
will feed over 90 children for an entire year. The Varsity captains also spearheaded the first “Move for Hunger” food
drive in which they collected 1,142 pounds of non-perishable food items which were sorted by The Salvation Army and
then delivered by Reebie Storage and Moving Company to Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry to provide 952 meals for
the hungry. Coach Kevin Griffin stated, “I couldn’t be more proud of the boys, parents and school for supporting this
outstanding program.”
Baseball: A Young but Promising Team
The Cadets only had five seniors return from last year’s squad, which won the fourth
straight SCC title and third straight regional crown. Their record last year under Coach
David Rakow was 22-11. The question being asked as Marmion began this season wasCould the Cadets keep the string going with a very young team?
Junior Brady Roberts led the team in hitting with a .484 batting average, 14 RBI, and 22
runs scored. Junior Alex Troop, the 2013 Baseball Achievement Award winner, led the
team with a 4-2 record and 58 strike outs in just 38 innings pitched. Marmion finished the
season 13-12 with a 3rd place finish in the Conference. Meyers, Roberts, Simon and Troop
were awarded All-Conference honors.
Next year’s squad will lose the services of graduating seniors – AJ Bohr, Will Dorjath, RJ
Gibson, Zack Jacobson and Connor Riley, but the future is bright for the team as Marmion
has 14 juniors and 2 sophomores returning from this year’s roster. Coach Dave Rakow
summed up the 2013 season by saying, “I’m proud of the way the baseball team played
this season. The Seniors left the program stronger than it was when they entered it and
the Juniors have a solid foundation to build upon for next season.”
Bass Fishing: Weather Impacts Season
This year Marmion’s Bass Fishing Team was led by senior captains Jon Thielen and John
Sieben. Thielen and Sieben had previously teamed up last year to lead the team to the
IHSA State Finals, and had high hopes of doing the same this year. This was especially true after the Cadets scored a key
early season victory in the Lake Jacksonville Spring Tournament, led by catches from Thielen, junior David McCauley,
sophomore JJ Vruno, and freshman Sterling Munro.
Alex Troop ‘14
Representing Marmion at the IHSA Sectional Tournament at
Shabbona Lake was Thielen, Sieben, McCauley, Vruno, juniors
Matt Zadorozny and Cody Kauss, and sophomore Kenny Dybas.
Unfortunately, due to a combination of cold, muddy water from the
late winter and spring flooding, the fishing was very difficult for the
Sectionals this year. Out of 17 teams competing, only one bass was
caught, so Marmion failed to advance to the IHSA State Finals for
only the 2nd time in the history of the program.
Thielen and McCauley represented the team in the FLW State
Championship Tournament on Clinton Lake, and finished in 5th
place (only 3 pounds away from 1st). Sieben finished with the Big
Bass of the Year at 5.5 pounds. Thielen took home the Angler of the
Year Award by finishing at the top of the team point standings. The
team MVP Award was shared by Thielen, Sieben, and McCauley.

Runners get Down and Dirty at the Heroes Mud Run
by: Patrick Kackert ‘87, Alumni Board Chairman
In honor of all past, present and future Heroes, more than
900 participants came from near and far and of all ages to
take part in the inaugural Heroes Mud Run held on May 25,
2013 (Memorial Day Weekend).
The 3.1 mile cross country race was held on the grounds of
Marmion Academy and Abbey Farms and consisted of 15
military-like obstacles. Participants ages 14 and older ran,
walked and crawled their way over piles of tires, a giant
slip-n-slide, 8-foot barricade walls, sprawling tunnels, rope
climb and four 30-foot mud pits.
The event kicked off with a military warm up nicknamed
the “Daily 7” led by U.S. Marines from Echo Company, 4th
Reconnaissance Battalion, Joliet and Marine Air Control
Group 48, Great Lakes. Marines from the 9th Recruiting
District were also on hand to lend added motivation.
Four waves of runners of various sizes and athletic
accomplishments with bib numbers on their shirts or
costumes were eager to get muddy to support their local
Heroes. Some approached the mud pits gingerly, jumping
in with caution, while the more adventurous rushed toward
them with purpose, leaping in without hesitation.
Many of the runners were individuals; lean, dexterous and
determined to set a personal best. Others were members of
teams, determined to break the finish line in unison. There
were military teams, corporate teams, neighborhood teams,
solo-gender teams, mixed-gender teams, couples and teams
made up of people from the same fitness club or school.
Some of the stand out team names were Mud is the New
Pink, Dirty Moms, Captain Chunk, and Lucky Stripes.
We didn’t forget our future little heroes. 4 to 13-year olds
ran the ¾ mile Little Heroes Mud Run which consisted of
mud and obstacles more suited for their size. The youngest
participant had just celebrated his 4th birthday.
In support of our local Heroes, a portion of the proceeds
benefited the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in
conjunction with local firefighters and the Heart of a Marine
Foundation, proudly serving all branches and members of
the United States Armed Forces.
It was a tremendous turnout and we were glad to see
so many families participate. The Heroes Mud Run
Committee worked exceptionally hard to make this an
exciting, challenging, fun-filled family event all could enjoy.
Committee members Ryan Anderson, Mike Reynolds,
Wayne Hoover, Jeff Roberts and Steve Hirner were equipped
to handle any safety, manpower or logistical issues. Every
first aid station was armed with trained medical staff from
Rush Copley Hospital and Fire officials from the Village of
North Aurora were on hand for emergencies.
“We are eager to get started on the planning for next year’s
Heroes Mud Run, featuring more runners, more obstacles
and more mud,” said Ryan Anderson, committee member
in charge of obstacles.
The Heroes Mud Run Committee would like to extend a
heartfelt thank you to the 122 volunteers and our corporate
sponsors. Without their sacrifice and generosity, we could
not have done it without them.

Mud Run, to be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 (Memorial

For the second consecutive year,
Marmion was successful in surpassing
the $1,000,000 mark for the
MARMION FUND! This year’s
figure of $1,158,931 topped last
year’s history-making $1,019,875.
These funds allow Marmion
to continue to provide quality
faculty, programs and facilities
to support our students. This accomplishment was made possible through
the generosity of those who replied to the MARMION FUND mailings,
phonathons and E-Bulletins, supported Salute to Youth, and to those
alumni who made gift or pledge promises when contacted by their
Class Adjutant. This was truly a team effort with gifts coming
from alumni, present and past parents, grandparents, trustees and
other friends of Marmion. We could not have achieved this success
without the assistance of all our volunteers throughout the entire year!
$1,158,931
Our sincerest THANK YOU to all who contributed to the this year’s efforts!
The Marmion monks, students, faculty and staff are blessed by your generosity
and dedication to Marmion Academy.

Centurion Awards Presented
to Loftus ‘75 and Deufel ‘77
The Marmion Alumni Centurion Award is
presented periodically to an alumnus who is
outstanding in his chosen career in life and/or who
has done great volunteer service for Marmion.
The Centurion Award, first conferred in 1975,
is the highest honor of the Marmion Alumni
Association. The Award is named after the
Roman Centurion in the Gospels, who was a man
outstanding for his faith, his love of his family and
his servants, and his devotion to duty.
The 82nd Centurion Award was presented
to Dr. James Loftus, class of 1976, at the 79th
Commencement Exercises on May 26, 2013 for his
outstanding achievements in the field of Catholic
higher education.
Carl Deufel, class of 1977, received the 83rd
Centurion Award on June 13, 2013 for his
outstanding achievements in his business career
and for his great volunteer work as a Marmion
trustee and as co-chairperson of the 2013 Salute to
Youth Dinner.

Marmion Alum Named
“30 Under 30” Honoree
The 2013 “30 Under 30” honorees,
who are featured in the May/June
issue of Realtor® Magazine, are a
mix of broker-owners/managers
and salespeople under the age
of 30, who represent all sectors
of the market from commercial
real estate to rental property
management. Some practice real
estate in small towns, while others
thrive in the nation’s largest cities.
The honorees also represent a
wide range of cultural backgrounds and come from every
region of the country, from Boston to Wasilla, Alaska.
Shawn Culhane ‘04 has been recognized as one of these 30
highly motivated, successful individuals. Shawn, owner
of Culhane Premier Properties in Austin TX, entered the
real estate business in 2008, just as the economy collapsed.
Despite the rocky start, he persevered and will soon begin
construction on a $1.3 million spec house.

** New Life Members (2012-2013)
The Abbot Marmion Society recognizes the lifetime generosity of trustees,
alumni, past and present parents and friends in nine gift categories from Donor
($10,000 to $24,999) to Founder ($1,000,000 or more) as well as Sustaining Members
who contribute $1,000 in the fiscal year of July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
At the annual Abbot Marmion Society dinner on October 19, 2013 twenty-six new
Life Members (Donor category or above) will be welcomed. 24 AMS members
also advanced to new gift recognition categories because of their continuing
generosity. The Abbot Marmion Society Donor Recognition Board is in the lobby
of the Battaglia Center.
There are currently 853 Life Members (living and deceased) and 56 Sustaining
Members.
