you. For more than 300 years, immigrants of
German Heritage have played a significant role
in the successful development of Canada and

Ich freue mich, dass wir heute Germanica

wollen uns an unser gemeinsames deutsches
Erbgut erinnern. Mögen wir aus Deutschland,
der Schweiz, Österreich, oder aus anderen
Ländern kommen.
Germanica 2009 is a wonderful way to
celebrate our traditions and achievements, no
matter where we come from. May it be
Germany, Switzerland, Austria or any other
country, we are bound together by our common
German Heritage and Culture
Der Höhepunkt des Tages wird die Ehrung

One of the highlights of this evening will be
the presentation of the Heritage Awards to a
number of persons who have made
extraordinary contributions to preserve our
Culture and Heritage, and who have
contributed much to the sucess and growth of
Canada.
Mein besonderer Dank gilt dem Planungs
Komitee und dem Conordia Club, die durch
ihre Arbeit an den Vorbereitungen für
Germanica 2009 beteiligt waren.
Es ist mein Wunsch, dass auch künftige
Generationen unser kulturelles Erbgut und
unsere Beiträge zum Aufbau Kanadas
würdigen und feiern werden. Ihnen, liebe
Gäste, wünsche ich von Herzen einen frohen
und geselligen Abend.
A special thank you to the planning committee,

Dear Friends of the German Canadian Congress,
On behalf of the Concordia Club’s Board of Directors and all of our members,
it is with great pride and pleasure that I welcome you to Germanica’s 2009
celebration of our German heritage and culture. For the past 136 years, the
Concordia Club and its members have played a great part in the preservation
and advancement of our German culture and heritage. It is our hope that we
can continue this legacy for many more years to come. It is our wish that
you will enjoy this evening, and take with you a great pride in our heritage.
The Concordia Club is known as the home of Oktoberfest here in Canada,
and for over 40 years we have spread the joy of German Gemütlichkeit
throughout North America. However, the German culture is more than
Oktoberfest, and all of the German Clubs in Canada strive to honour our
numerous cultural contributions. The Concordia Club salutes our Sister
Clubs throughout Canada in their efforts to maintain and advance this proud
heritage.
I would like to thank the Organizing Committee for a job well done, you have
made us all proud.
Once again, welcome to one and all, and congratulations to all of the
recipients of the awards today. You achievements have ensured that our
culture endures, not only in the German community, but in the country
as a whole.

Liebe Freunde
We are pleased to recognize those who have helped create this place we call
home but we also recognize that Germanic people and their successes have
had an impact across Canada. We have all prospered together.
Welcome and enjoy tonight’s celebration!
Sincerely,
Ken Seiling

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
On behalf of members of council and the citizens of the City of Kitchener,
welcome everyone to Germanica 2009. This celebration of German
heritage will, no doubt, bring together those of German ancestry, as well
as people wishing to learn and experience the best of German culture.
The German Canadian congress is to be congratulated for its work to
preserve this culture and the German language for our citizens today.
Kitchener, formerly Berlin, was founded by German settlers and over the
years has enjoyed the cultural influences these earliest residents shared.
Thanks to these founding citizens, our community has become increasingly
culturally diverse. Their legacy of acceptance and their spirit of innovation
will continue for generations to follow.
Thank you for all your work in our community. Enjoy the celebration!
Sincerely,
Carl Zehr

German-Canadian Congress (Ont.)
The German-Canadian Congress is an umbrella organization for German clubs,
churches, companies and private persons who support our goals.
Our Mission and Goal is:
to give Canadians, whose heritage is German, a united voice towards
the government, the media and the public at large;
to make known the contributions that Canadians of German heritage, and others
who are sympathetic to our cause, have made to build our community, province
and country. In special cases these persons are honoured by receiving
the “Heritage Award” of the German-Canadian Congress;
to meet regularly with representatives of the different levels of government
and the media in order to present the concerns of our members;
to have a good relationship and work together with the German Embassy
in Ottawa and with the Consulate General in Toronto;
to take a firm stand against unfair stereotyping and untrue accusations
against Canadians of German heritage;
to take a firm stand on protecting the rights of the individual person within the laws
of Canada and the Human Rights Declaration of the United Nations;
to support clubs, whose cultural background is German, in their work to
preserve German heritage and traditions, and to be a link between those clubs;
to be an information centre for persons who have questions about
German-Canadian issues regardless where these persons live or come from;
Almost 3 Million Canadians consider themselves of German Heritage.
