3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 HEADLINES by Craig Halsall Another busy and enjoyable week in school! How we use your feedback We held our first Headmaster’s Open Forum this week for parents of children in Key Stage 1 (i.e. Years 1 and 2). This was a good opportunity to meet with parents and to discuss feedback about many aspects of how we run our school. One strong recommendation was that we should think about using this front page of this newsletter (the HM page) to communicate key messages to parents every week. So, whilst I am delighted that many of you are finding the rest of the newsletter interesting and enjoyable to read, we are making a clearer separation from this week between the HM page and news from the rest of our school. I hope you will find this to be a helpful change that makes it easier to be informed of key information, yet to continue to enjoy reading about the rest of our school life. Winter Uniform All pupils must be in winter uniform by Monday 6th October. Please inform your child’s class teacher if there is a particular item that is not available from the uniform shop. I will ask class teachers to feed back to Mr Roberts and Mr Thomas of items that may not be available so we can try and respond to any shortages. Headmaster’s Open Forum: Key Stage 2 (Years 3 – 6) This will take place in the Drama Studio on Tuesday 7th October between 1.45pm and 2.30pm. This is an open forum and parents of children in Years 3-6 are invited to discuss issues of importance. I look forward to welcoming you next week. Year 3 Roman Day This will take place on Thursday 9th October. This is always a fantastic and enjoyable day for all pupils. Parents of Year 3 pupils will receive a separate letter today sharing full details of the day. Please read this as it contains important information about our expectations for pupils, including dress requirements. Primary Parents Evenings These will take place on Wednesday 8th October and Thursday 9th October for all pupils in Years 1-6. These will take place from 2.30pm until 6.00pm. Please see hard copies of letters sent home with children last Friday for more information. Please note that there will be no primary ECAs on these days. 6JW assembly and lessons – parents invited! As a further measure to engage parents in school life, we are going to trial inviting parents into school to attend our primary assemblies and some selected lessons. Whilst we cannot invite all parents to assemblies due to limited space, we are inviting parents of children from 6JW on Thursday 9th October to attend their science assembly and to spend the first lessons of the day in Miss Watson’s classroom. Parents are asked to be in the Drama Studio by 8.00am for the assembly, and may then choose to stay anytime from 8.30am until 10.15am in 6JW’s classroom. This will be a wonderful opportunity for parents to see how their children are working and, if successful, we will consider rolling out to other primary classes. Inter-House Football Competition We try to avoid making changes to the calendar wherever possible. However, it is sometimes necessary to make changes at short notice. As a result, the Inter-House Football Competition for Key Stage 4 & 5 students is to be rescheduled from Friday 10th October to Wednesday 15th October. Please see the article about Inter-House Competitions in this newsletter for further details. Parents are invited and so we hope to see a great turn-out! Have an enjoyable weekend! Craig Halsall, Headmaster 1 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 OUR SCHOOL NEWS: Technology Today Your son or daughter is using Technology in a positive way. In Maths they are using an online Maths resource that is being used to deliver Mathematics learning. It has been cited that there is a correlation with students who are using myiMATHS effectively and performance in the classroom and summative assessments. It is a learning program that consciously shifts focus from providing our students mere Arithmetic or 'number' skills to including many essential mathematical concepts and skills such as observation, logical thinking, reasoning, analysis, and synthesis as part of the syllabus. Donald Scott, ICT teacher French champions of the week! There are two champions to announce this week: the winners of the Haileybury Almaty French and Haileybury Almaty IGCSE French courses on memrise.com. LaMascus Melana, 5DMC Trip to Konaev Museums A few days ago our Kazakh group had a trip to museums of Dinmukhmmed Konaev. In this short article I will tell about our trip. Dinmukhammed Akhmetuli Konaev was the first person in Kazakhstan in Soviet Union. But in those days, his job was as follows: the first secretary of the Communist Party. Everyone respected him and called him Dimas Akhmetovich. In this museum we have seen his cabinet, bedroom and kitchen. Each room is surrounded by lots of souvenirs. He was a very respectful person, who was loved by everyone and I respect him very much. Yelaman Sain , Y10 ASE Poetry Here are two wonderful poems by our Year 7 students Tal and Bengu. These poems are worthy of an Attitude to Learning level 5, due to the effort both students took to compose the poem, the effort they took to present the poem and the outstanding level of enthusiasm they demonstrated during the task. Well done! Tom Finlayson, Head of English Faculty the moon makes a silver path across the water, from the reflection of the stars. Bengu Canliel, Year 7 Yachts Yachts filled the sea with Their fin-like sails and masts The green grass colours the natural land As they form sculpture-like hills Seagulls spread their wings carefully As they float over the water Fishermen stand with their rods Hoping for a glimpse of fish The fluffy clouds formed beauty in the sky As they pranced along like sheep in a herd The moon makes a shiny Silver pathway along the water The seaside The beautiful, gorgeous sky, With white clouds moving all across the sky, Blocks the view of the sunset. A million of people, Pushing each other off the pier into the deep sea. Children playing cheerfully, Everyone is swimming altogether. Houses are lying dangerously on the cliff, Brightening the sky with their orange roofs, Watching the crowd pass by. Old churches and castles, With a brilliant view of the coastline, Freezing from the blowing wind. Ships and boats with fin-like sails, Drifting through the luminous, aqua water. An uncountable land on the horizon But the sea is the star of it all Tal Seyhan, Year 7 KS5 News I have learned a lot during this month. This is my first year at Haileybury Almaty and I am really amazed by the atmosphere of the school. I really enjoy my Chemistry lessons. We have passed and revised a lot of themes where we did some practical work. We started with the core principles of Chemistry such as atom’s structure, relative atomic mass, the periodic table. Later we did some quantative Chemistry like solving concentration, empirical and molecular formulae problems. Being in the Sixth Form we need to work extremely hard and be as productive as we can. Ainura, 12PB 4 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 This month was very helpful for me. I have learned and revised a lot during the lessons of the four subjects I chose for my A-levels. For instance, at the Chemistry classes we have already finished the first chapter of the book by revising some of the core principles of the subject, such as calculating formulae using moles, and also learning a lot of new stuff like the purpose of mass spectrometry. Besides studying, the students of our school attend fascinating ECAs that are not only fun, but also improve the students’ social and leadership skills. Personally, I am enjoying the clubs that I chose to be part of. Being a new student of Haileybury Almaty, I must say that studying here is extremely interesting and productive. I am looking forward to the new challenges that are ahead for me. Aigerim, 12PB My first month at Haileybury Almaty as a Sixth Form student was challenging. For the first time it was a little bit tough to adjust to the completely new environment, but with the help of my new classmates I managed to adapt to it very quickly. However, there is still a lot of work to do and I am looking forward to accomplish all the tasks I put in my way in the future. Daulet, 12PB Being a new student in the school is always hard. I came to Haileybury Almaty this autumn, but immediately was impressed by so much support and attention from our school staff and students. After only a month in Haileybury I already learned a lot of things and gained some good results in my favourite subject – Psychology. These four weeks were an unforgettable experience for me and I’m looking forward for more exciting moments! Karina, 12PB Studying in Year 12 is much harder than in IGCSE at least because you are expected to do twice the work with no more time than we had in Year 11, not only that but we also are supposed to do lots of work outside of school. To get into top universities we are told we have to spend as much time studying outside of school as we do inside. For most this means extra 26 hours/week, 3 hours a night Mon-Fri and 5 hours Sunday & Saturday. Babyr 12PB Since I moved to Almaty from Russia this summer, my life changed significantly, and the main change is the start of study at Haileybury Almaty School. Before the start I have already known that the studying program of my new school is slightly different from Russian, but I was ready to work hard. From the first day I learned useful information, such as how to manage the time and set the targets. Now I find the study at this school very motivating, as it’s not easy at all, but the challenges make me work harder. The subjects of my choice - Business Studies, Economics, Psychology and Geography provide me a lot of useful knowledge, for instance, the problems of world’s population, the changes in demand and supply, the conclusions from some world famous experiments and the algorithm to start my own business. A whole month passed since I first went to Haileybury Almaty as a new student. To be honest, I fell in love with this school, because I’m very impressed by the interesting and productive lessons, very polite and professional teachers, therefore I go to school with a smile on my face each day. Nataly, 12PB 5 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 Interschool Football Primary Year 6 to Year 3 had an amazing competition with 4 different schools. Haileybury participated superbly and got some excellent victories. Years 3 and 4 won the younger competition and Miras won the Years 5 and 6 completion with Haileybury coming a close second. The different football teams were Miras, Tian Shan, AIS and KIS and of course us. There was a player in the tournament from Miras (older competition) and another player of the tournament was from AIS (younger competition). Mr. McCammon organised this amazing match and the fantastic Ms Welsh, Mr Butters and Mr Adil were the referees and set up the football pitch. Many people were subs and cheered for their teams as well as the amazing parents from all schools. Amankulov Aldiyar, 5DM Rohan Kaucher and Josh Halsall, 4SD Photo: Rohan and Josh Thank you to everyone for making this interschool tournament. All schools have been playing really grate and of course school Miras that was playing tremendously and won interschool tournament. I was proud for myself and my school that we earned 2nd place by football in the older competition. I was so happy my Dad was able to see me play! Haileybury won the younger completion, congratulations. We should congratulate all schools for great play, participation and sportsmanship. It was really fun and cool and I want this competition to happen next year! Zhangaziyev Nuraly, 5DK Photo: Primary school pupils I really enjoyed the interschool competition a lot! I (Josh) played in the final and came very close to scoring a goal. I (Rohan) hit the post twice! It was a very intense competition but it was fun and all the schools were fair, kind and played very good matches. Our coach was Mr Doohan, who prepared us for the match. At the end of the games each team and player showed great respect because everyone shook hands. They played honourably and that is the main thing! Obviously, we really want this to happen again! Thank you to the parents who watched and the schools who came. Photo: Primary school pupils We liked this tournament because we like football. The different schools were AIS, TIS, MIRAS, KIS and HAILEYBURY ALMATY. There was great sportsmanship. We scored many goals and won lot of games. Overall in the older tournament MIRAS won. It was very hot and very tiring. All the schools were very friendly and we had some excellent games. Yuriy and Sofiya 6 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 - “…I’ve been doing it since (early) childhood and it was fun”: Madina 6NSO I would like to remind parents, that the fee for Skala (3000KZT) for October is now due. I would like to thank Haileybury, and you, for organizing the football tournament. Our children enjoyed themselves immensely. The tournament was well organized and run and your older children did themselves proud with their contribution. Thank you very much for including KIS in the competition! Rosie Hydar, Deputy Principal of KIS KS2 Climbing ECA Climbing quickly offers the opportunity to experience a sense of challenge and enjoyment when pupils succeed in a difficult task. They will also learn how to overcome difficulties and the sense of reward this brings to their self-esteem. The sport of climbing encourages their physical development in more ways than mere strength: climbers learn to move in fluid controlled movements, often likened to the grace of ballet. Photo: Climbing ECA in Skala Haileybury: Our canteen Hello parents, teachers and pupils. My name is Melana Lamascus and I am going to tell you about our canteen. I have been in this school for more than three years so I know each and every corner of this school. Our school provides healthy choices for children and staff. In the canteen pupils can sit with their friends and talk as they enjoy their food. We have a choice of white brown bread, salads, fruits and vegetables. We have some soup and fish, chicken and potatoes and even a pasta bar. These are some comments from the participants: I enjoy climbing because… - “…it is cool because it felt like I was flying, and I wasn’t screaming”: Sophie 5BT - “…I am … choosing challenges and beating them”: Jasmine 5BT - “…I am getting to the very top, but scary (looking) from the top”: Alisa 5DM - “…it is fun,… I like (descending) on the ropes, it is very cool”: Irina 6JW - “…going down feels like flying”: Sofiya 6NSO Photo: Our canteen We are very lucky to have our superb chefs that make our food. Even my mother was amazed when she heard what food we had in store. We have our staff 'guarding' the canteen. If you don't have any fruits or 7 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 veggies they will send you back to get some. That’s how children get healthy meals. Remember, get the amount that you will eat. We want to stop people dying of hunger because we are wasting food. Melana Lamascus, Year 5DM In Haileybury for good things we get house points. House points are points for good things. If you do good work or help someone or many things you will get a house point. In fact if you get 10 house points you will get a card. Year 5 Music Lessons Our Year 5 music lessons have been and still are extremely fun this year because we are composing things and stuff like that. For example last week we first did some singing warmups and then we watched a small and short scene from Tom and Jerry. We watched it three times, the first time we watched it we watched with sound. The second time we watched it we watched it without sound just to see how it looked. And then the last time we watched it we watched it without sound and then we concentrated on what type of sounds would go good with what is happening in the scene. Photo: Attlee house members Photo: Year 5 Music Lessons Then we got into groups and got instruments and composed music for the scene in Tom and Jerry. Sometimes we would sing songs and sometimes we would not but the very best part of a music lessons are our teacher. He is funny and kind and I like the way he teaches us. Blair Schooling, 5DMc HOUSE POINTS This school has two different cards. One is yellow and one is blue. It's really important to have a card because otherwise your house will lose. Try to do your best to get house points. You can get lots of house points if you wish. Don't forget to work well to get them. Alen, 5DMc Coming Back to Life - My Experience We had a very cool and interesting exercise on last Friday afternoon, it was about the feelings that you have when you only come to life like Monster of Frankenstein did. This exercise helped me to feel the moment when I just have been born, this every sound and things that looked very strange to me when I was little it was interesting, I had same thing at that exercise. No difficult things are included in this exercise, you only have to use your knowledge of English and your imagination. It was great fun and enjoyable exercise for me. Rustamov, Year 9SW On Friday we played roles of Frankenstein book. We played only Act 1 because we just started to read this book. My role was a monster, I just have to lie on the table. My partner was playing the role of Frankenstein. In first Act Frankenstein wants to alive the 8 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 dead body by the electricity of storm. After few minutes the body became alive and Frankenstein call him a Monster. When we played this roles it was very interesting and funny, some moments were very exciting. I think that when we will finish every Act in this book we will play roles. Adi Baitasov, Year 9JO Photo: The monster performing Friday role play This week we read a book about Frankenstein. The most interesting scene we played in a role. It was becoming alive like a monster on a table. We divided into 3 groups and our teacher Mrs Susan gave us papers for the roles, on it was the questions that the partner should ask us. When I lie on the table I felt a lot of pain in my back and then my partner told me to relax. He gave me 3 minutes to do that when he started asking me questions I answer them all and they were very strange, because I was feeling that I was just born and I did know anything... Tamerlan Nurlanuly, Year 9JO We have made a project on a Frankenstein book. We have made a little play about chapter one in the book. In chapter one Frankenstein discovered a way of getting born again, by using electricity and a thunderstorm. He has made the monster, but he made a thing that he didn’t want to make. So we made an act on how the monster is getting born, how is it to feel when you are born again, but in a different way. In my opinion, I think that the little play was actually a lot of fun, because the whole class liked the project and the acting part, everybody where involved in a different role. There were two different parts to the role; you here either the monster or the professor (Frankenstein). I think everybody liked it, and we should do it several times in a week, so that it will be more interesting to read the book perhaps. Vlad Pak, Year 9JO Coming back to life Hello everybody! I want to tell you about my English lessons, which are awesome. Last week we were doing very interesting work. We were monsters, all of us. We were lying on a table and imagining that we are real monsters. While we were working I thought that I was lying on a wooden table near to Frankenstein in his dark, cold laboratory. That was cool. Alisher Kozhakmetov, Year 9JO Photo: Frankenstein’s laboratory 9 3rd October 2014 [Type text] THE HAILEYBURY HERALD No: 6 Coming Alive When I imaging that I am the monster, I felt relaxed firstly. Think about nothing, just blank space. Then I imagine something that I like, so I can relaxed. Then I start to think about Frankenstein room, his laboratory, how someone sitting there and walking. I heard many different voices and smell something unusual. After all I heard noises and something strange happened to me. Now I can move my whole body. When I open my eyes everything was really unusual. Aigerim, Year 9JO Photo: Year 9 in action ATTENTION all MUSIC LOVERS!! University of British Columbia Presentation – During lunchtime on Tuesday 30th September, twenty one Haileybury students from Years 10-13 watched a very informative presentation in the Drama Studio about the University of British Columbia in Canada, with information about the courses offered, the campus and how to apply. This week we are looking at American artist Shepherd Fairey. He is an artist that designed the Barack Obama ‘HOPE’ poster campaign. He designed it for Barack Obama to win as the first black President. The style is very creative, interesting and is also eye catching. He uses American colours to design the poster. We were using Photoshop to recreate his style, it took us 2 lessons and the result was great. We came up with our own quotes to put, instead of the word ’HOPE’. Everyone did a good job and were happy. I learnt to use Photoshop and some of its features, which will be very helpful in future lessons. I know how to use Photoshop now and make my own poster. I personally enjoyed the task because of us learning on how to use Photoshop and the result that came out. HOUSE roundup.... During the match, Kipling had high pressure on the Edmostone team, resulting the entire game being on the Edmonstone's side of the pitch. Despite of their desperate defense, Valera Mindeyev had managed to squeeze in a goal, with the assist provided by Kaisar Jaxybaev. Score, 1:0. The second game, Kipling played Bartle-Frere. This was a tense game, the sides were equal, both defences were solid as a rock, and this had the result of both teams going away without a goal. Score, 0:0 In the last decisive game with Attlee, Kipling mobilized all their forces and succeeded, Alan Abdrazakov scoring the only goal, with the assist given by Kaisar Abdrazakov again! This goal decided the whole tournament's fate. Attlee tried so hard to break down the defence of Kipling, but failed. Score 1:0 and… KiplingCHAMPIONS! Bartle Frere I am so proud to be part of this great football team of Kipling's! -Alibek Jaisanbayev 7 SJ We are especially proud of Zarina in Year 7 who was awarded the Player of the Tournament for the girls’ in KS3. ST After having four football legends and numerous football tournaments we have had a busy week cheering, supporting and celebrating our House. The Attlee Times BE We’re football crazy! E The Well done to everyone who took part in the Inter House Football for KS3 and Year 5/6 last week. Lots of enthusiasm, passion and skill was shown by all teams. In KS3 we finished 2nd for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. In Year 5 and 6 we finished 4th in Year 5 and 3rd in Year 6. Everyone should be very proud of their efforts! Well done! Secondary Students ‘The most difficult thing about learning in English is analysing texts because I don’t always understand the details.’ Timur Kuralbayev, Year 10 Activity: Haileybury English Language Page Welcome to the ELL page!! Everyone in our school is an English Language Learner (ELL). Some of us speak English as a first language – some of us speak it as a second, or third (or fourth!) language! But we are ALL studying it and it plays an essential part in classes and the communicating we do around campus. So - all of us in the EAL Faculty decided that we wanted to give students and parents some tips on how to make learning English more fun, more effective and more useful – so here we are!! But just giving advice is boring so we’re going to add some more interesting things here every week, too. Some challenging vocabulary, some ideas for getting organized – and, most importantly – some jokes. This week’s joke comes from Mrs. Owen – do YOU have any better ones to share?? Please bring your jokes – and any ideas about how we can make this page the FIRST one you turn to every week – to any member of the English department! And – finally: here’s MY joke of the week: What did the grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing – it just let out a little whine*. See you here next week! Mrs. Botcharova (*a little wine – get it?) Joke: One day an English grammar teacher was looking ill. A student asked, "What's the matter?" "Tense," answered the teacher, describing how he felt. The student paused, then continued, "What was the matter? What has been the matter? What might have been the matter... ?" Language learning tips from our Year 9 students: Family meals are a great opportunity to practise English. Choose a recent event that has been in the news and discuss it in English with your family. Do your parents speak English? If so, have a vocabulary exchange, spot mistakes and correct each other or teach your family some new words! Idiom of the Week ‘Set everything (computer, social media networks) to English.’ Assel Abdrakhmanova You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. ‘Learn 10 new words every week and speak English at home.' Alina Ashimzhan Meaning: you can give someone the opportunity to do something, but you cannot force them to do it. On joining Haileybury Almaty: ‘Last year I joined the lovely community of Haileybury Almaty. This was my decision to change schools because I wanted to practise my English. My English was already good; however, I still ought to practise more. By the time I entered Haileybury Almaty, I had already won two international English Olympiads. I can only say that I love English, I think in English and I enjoy speaking English in this school.’ Taimas Narbayev, Year 11 Taimus, Y11 Primary Students – be a Rhyming Rabbit! Choose a one-syllable word and see how many words you can find to rhyme. The winner picks the next word. Use your phonics knowledge and don’t forget to check the definitions of any words you don’t know. Special Report HM Report– 10th Anniversary Kazakhstan Golf Open Kazakhstan Golfing News Report: by Ben Halsall, translated by Yelaman Sain, Year 10 ENGLISH The Kazakhstan Open Golf was interesting and a fun experience. I enjoyed the trip despite the change in weather on the second day. The first day we were given and shown how to use radios and PDA’s, referred to as iPads, the radios had specific command words you had to open with – For example if you wanted to radio a score to command you would say “hole 9 to command” they would follow that up with “go ahead hole 9”. The PDA’s were for if you were near golfers so you could send scores without talking. In Golf you have to be very quiet if you distract a professional golfer whilst their taking a shot, well you’re in a lot of trouble. We were provided with food at lunch and on the second day lunch tasted well because it was hot. We were outside for hours with a freezer bag – a bit pointless! Kazakhstan Golf Open Tournament Report: by Andy Cheon and Sanzhar Khaidarov, Year 10 ENGLISH We had a day off on Thursday the 18th and Friday the 19th. We went to Zhailjau golf court as volunteers to help the Kazakhstan Open Golf Tour Challenge. We came into school in the morning and went to Zhailjau to help the staffs. We were shown our volunteer room in the club house, there we have been given instructions on how to do our job and how to behave. We were divided into groups of 2 and each group was sent to different holes. Our job was to ask the golfers for their scores for the last 3 holes and then report these scores to the main score board. We really enjoyed the weather on Thursday but unfortunately the weather wasn’t as pleasant on Friday. It was really cold but we still have done our jobs successfully. We really enjoyed this trip. Kazakhstan Golf Tournament 2014: by Yelaman Sain, Year 10 ENGLISH Last week there was a golf tournament which is called Kazakhstan Open 2014. 10 pupils from Year 10 were representing our school as volunteers on this tournament. It was a very exciting event where we had to help the tournament to take place. We were in charge for golfer’s scores. Our volunteer team was split into groups of two. We spent 8 hours sitting near the holes and waiting for golfers to finish their round and ask them for their scores. Sometimes when a golfer had a very bad game, they become so rude and mean, so they just ignored us when we were asking them. But there were some nice golfers in good mood and some of them gave us balls that they played with. We were allowed to have some snacks. On the second day it was a freezing cold, it was about 15 degrees and it was raining. It was harder to work, because sometimes we didn’t even feel our fingers! But we did our best and I hope that we really helped this tournament. Kazakhstan Open Golf Report: by Caroline Carter, Year 10 ENGLISH Last Thursday and Friday, me and 9 other volunteers from Yr.10 went to help out at the Kazakhstan Open. There we worked as scorers; we would ask the players for their scores and either record them on a tablet or with a walkietalkie. On Thursday, Togzhan and I were on the 12th Hole. It was sunny and warm so it was very pleasant. We ate a large amount of chocolate. On Friday it was cold and rainy, but it wasn’t that bad because we were on the 18th Hole so we could sit on the sofas under the terrace whilst waiting for the players. I thought the trip was very fun; I finally learnt what was meant by ‘par’, I learnt some very cool golf terminology (eagle, birdie) and it piqued my interest in golf. The players were very friendly (apart from the ones that hit their clubs on the grass in frustration or threw their golf balls into the lake). Some of the players even gave us their golf balls. Overall I thought it was a very fun and educational experience. I’d love to volunteer next year and I’m thinking of starting to play golf.
