TLH Ranked Again as a Best High
School by U.S. News and World Report
T. L. Hanna is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the 11th best high school in SC and in
the top 5% in the nation (three academic magnet schools are ahead of us in the SC ranking). TLH
ranks second in SC among those in the top ten in the percentage of AP classes passed (TLH has
35% of all students taking AP classes, with 31% passing).
Class of 2015 Sets Scholarship Record
The Class of 2015, thus far, has earned in excess of $15,700,000 in scholarship money.
This breaks a school record for student scholarship earnings. Congrats to the Class of
2015 for this great accomplishment!
Statement from Superintendent Wilson
Regarding High School Reorganization
After considerable feedback from the Anderson community, I have decided to withdraw my
proposal in regards to reorganizing the high schools in Anderson School District Five. I want to
thank the Board of Trustees for allowing me the time to present my ideas, and also for their
honest feedback. While I still believe that this proposal has merit, it is evident that going this route
is not something the Anderson community desires at this time.
All of this being said, we did receive support regarding other areas of the proposal. High school
reorganization aside, we heard positive reviews concerning the construction of our new College
and Career Center on the site of Lakeside Middle School, and also positive thoughts in regards to
future plans with the McCants Middle School property.
I want to thank the Board of Trustees, the Anderson community, and the faculty and staff of
Anderson School District Five for allowing me the chance to present my ideas, and urge anyone
who may still have any questions or concerns over any areas of my proposal to contact me
directly. Working together I know we can still achieve the ultimate goal of providing a high
quality education for all students.
Best regards,
Thomas A. Wilson
Superintendent, Anderson School District Five

Graduation Practice #1
Here is the debriefing from today’s graduation practice:
 Prospective graduates need to continue to wear their ID’s and follow dress code rules.
 Students were given information/items during the practice
o Honor Graduate tassels
o IB tassels
o Envelope from Crafts’ Photography to order a picture of graduates receiving their
diplomas (this is due back tomorrow during practice)
o Valedictorian and Salutatorian Medals
o IB Medals
o A Creative Video flyer for those who want to order a video of the graduation
ceremony
o Fee sheets for anyone who still owes money for lost books, ID badges, etc.
o A congratulatory letter from Tim Scott
o Stoles for National Honor Society
o Information regarding the turn-in of Chromebooks and instructions to see Mrs.
Carol Miller for cords for those who are members of Mu Alpha Theta
o Information about behavior of guests at the ceremony -- we want graduation to be
a dignified ceremony in which all graduates are duly recognized. Yelling, screaming,
noise-makers, air horns, etc., will not be allowed. Law enforcement has been
instructed to remove any guests who interfere with the ceremony in any way. It is
embarrassing to our graduates and disrupts the ceremony. Please let all of your
invited guests know these expectations.
 Report cards will be given out at tomorrow’s practice (8:15 am at TLH)
 Friday’s practice will be at Bon Secours in Greenville. All students will ride district buses
to this practice. We should return between 11:45 am and noon.
Congratulations to our Top Four!
It is tradition that the students with the top four GPA’s in the Senior Class serve as speakers at
graduation. Congratulations to the following students:

Two TLH Students Win Star Awards
(Courtesy of Anderson Independent Mail – May 18, 2015)
History buffs, mathematical wizards, voracious readers, young scientists and budding artists came
together Monday night for the Star Student Award program, which honors some of Anderson
County’s best and brightest.
The Independent Mail hosts and acts as a major sponsor of the event, and this year’s title sponsor
was Tri-County Technical College. The awards celebrate well-rounded juniors who excel in
academics, athletics and the arts.
This marked the third year of the awards program. Seventy-two students made up the largest field
of nominees in the history of the program.
Students were nominated by their teachers, principals, guidance counselors or ordinary residents.
Nominees came from 13 public and private high schools. “This is truly one of the most elite
groups of high school students in Anderson County,” said Susan Kelly-Gilbert, the Independent
Mail’s publisher and chief revenue officer. “This is such a talented group of young people. They
give us all such hope about the future. Everybody’s a winner.”
Martha Grace Whiteman, a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer at a food
bank, won the award for English. She attends T.L. Hanna High School. She hopes to study
dramaturgy or set design someday. “This is just wonderful,” she said. “I am just thinking, ‘oh,
wow,’ because there are so many good nominees.”
Another T.L. Hanna High School student, Shelby Storm, received the award for science.

Roh (Math); Shelby Storm (Winner in Science); Ben Turner (Social Studies); Chase Christopher
(Athletics); Ben Jones (Fine Arts); and Darian Rencher (People’s Choice). All of the nominees
were in attendance and received trophies for being nominated in their respective categories.
Help with Library Books!
We currently have 918 books still out from the library. Please remind your teens that they will be
charged for these books if they do not return them. If you see any in cars or around your home,
please send them back to us!
New TLH Scoreboard!
Track and Field
Congratulations to the TLH Track/Field athletes that went to the State Meet this past
weekend. The Girls 4x800 team finished 7th at state, the team consisted of Paige Mower,
Caroline Tolly, Kate Martin, Melea Sangl. Graham Borsum finished 8th in the 3200 meters, and
Kamiya Dendy (a 7th grader at Glenview!) finished 2nd in the high jump. Kamiya made ALL

information.
Girls’ Golf
The TLH Girls’ Golf Team finished 3rd in the Region and advanced to the 4A Upper State
Tournament. The team just missed qualifying for the 4A State Tournament. The Lady Jackets’
team had eight golfers, and six of these young ladies had never played in a high school golf match
before. The one goal the girls set for the year (making the upperstate tournament) was
accomplished. Next year looks even better with all of the girls returning. Right now we have 15
young ladies signed up for golf next year. The TLH Girls’ Golf program has now reached the
Upper State or State Tournament 11 out of the last 14 years. Go Lady Jackets!
CONGRATULATIONS TO “STATE
APPROVED” CERTIFIED NURSE
ASSISTANTS
Congratulations to these young ladies, Brook Black, Myia Nash, Dallas Allison, and Brittany
McCoppin, who were recently certified as Nurse Assistants from the Anderson 5 Career Campus
Health Science Department. The Clinical Work-Based CNA Program must be taught by a
Registered Nurse upon submitting an application for approval from the State Department of
Health and Human Services.
Students must have 2 TB skin tests, purchase clinical shoes, provide their own transportation to
the clinical site, pass a national background check and pay $101 to take the exam. They must
complete a minimum of 100 hours in the Certified Nurse Aide Program, of which 40 hours must
be classroom instruction, 20 hours of documented skill practicum, and 40 hours of clinical
experience in a long- term care facility providing direct patient care. Upon completion of the
minimum hours, the student must sit for the SC Nurse Aide Exam.
The exam consists of 2 parts, a 70 question written test that must be completed in 2 hours and a
skills portion. The skills portion consists of 5 random skills
that are to be completed in 30 minutes. Both portions of the
exam must be passed in order to become certified. On the
college level the course fee alone ranges $750-$1,300 plus
the cost of uniforms, background check, all current
immunizations, TB test and $101 to register for the CNA
test. For students at the Career Campus the average cost is
$200 total, per student. Additionally these students are all
HIPAA certified, American Heart Adult, Infant and Child
CPR/AED Certified, and Health Science Honor Students.
Instructors for this program at the Career Campus are Gail
Nash, R.N. and Carol Tamaklo, R.N.
Anderson Independent Mail Donates
Paper Rack to TLH
Today, Ben Davis, Senior Director of Newspaper Operations for the Independent Mail, delivered
the newspaper rack that appeared in the movie Radio. This rack also contains the Radio special
edition section from October 2003. Davis said they were cleaning a warehouse and discovered
the rack. It appears in the opening sequences of the movie. Thank you, Anderson Independent
Mail for thinking of us! We will display it in the front office of the school and treasure it as a
great piece of memorabilia from Radio’s movie.
For Parents of Graduates…
WALKING AWAY
It is eighteen years ago, almost to the day -A sunny day with the leaves just turning,
The touch-lines new-ruled -- since I watched you play
Your first game of football, then, like a satellite
Wrenched from its orbit, go drifting away
Behind a scatter of boys. I can see
You walking away from me towards the school
With the pathos of a half-fledged thing set free
Into a wilderness, the gait of one
Who finds no path where the path should be.
That hesitant figure, eddying away
Like a winged seed loosened from its parent stem,
Has something I never quite grasp to convey
About nature's give-and-take -- the small, the scorching
Ordeals which fire one's irresolute clay.
I have had worse partings, but none that so
Gnaws at my mind still. Perhaps it is roughly
Saying what God alone could perfectly show --
How selfhood begins with a walking away,
And love is proved in the letting go.
-- Cecil Day-Lewis wrote this poem for his first-born son, Sean. He realized at some point, he had
to let his son go. Many of you will be “letting go” for the first time when your teen goes off to
college. It’s tough letting go for the first time – but you will survive!
Tollison Honored with Papa John’s
Teacher Appreciation Award
Nirmala Bruce of Papa John’s Pizza,
Melvya Tollison of TLH, and Marisol
Jackson, TLH 9th Grader.
Marisol Jackson nominated TLH teacher Melvya Tollison for one of Papa John's annual teacher
appreciation awards. She was selected as a winner, and Nirmala Bruce, representing Papa John’s,
made a surprise presentation to Dr. Tollison during class this week. Dr. Tollison and the student
who nominated her will receive free pizza for a year! Her class will also receive a pizza party.
Congrats, Dr. Tollison.

Students may not enroll in credit recovery if they would have failed the class due to excessive
absences.
Students must complete 30 seat hours AND all assigned coursework in APEX. They will earn a
70 in the class upon completion of the course work.
Students may register for credit recovery in up to two classes in summer school.
Cost is $160 per course.
Additional Notes
Students may not complete attendance recovery AND credit recovery for the same course.
Students who do not successfully complete or are removed from this program will not receive a
refund.
This is a privilege so no discipline problems will be tolerated.
Money must be paid before students will be enrolled (cash, money order, or credit/debit card
only).
Bus transportation is available on a limited, first come/first served, basis. Mrs. Tenry or Mrs.
Anthony can provide details; you will need to sign up at registration.
Contact Mary Nell Anthony at 260-5110 or [email protected] with any questions
regarding summer school.
FAQs about Summer School
1.
Why should I take summer school? Taking credit recovery or attendance recovery allows
students the BEST chance of graduating on time. Once a student is no longer on grade
level, they have an 80 percent chance of dropping out. It is always better to not have to
double up on classes throughout the year.
2.
Why is summer school so expensive? To pay our summer school staff which consists of
multiple teachers, a security officer, computer facilitator, etc., it costs almost $16,000.00.
The state and local budget does not fund summer school. We are not “making money”;
we are simply paying our staff. It is far more expensive to get behind in your coursework
and not gain a diploma.
3.
What is the difference between credit recovery and attendance recovery? Credit
recovery is when you retake a class that you have failed. You must have at least a 65 in
the class to be allowed that opportunity. We have found that if students score lower
than a 65, it is difficult for them to complete the credit recovery course in the allotted
amount of time. These courses cost $160.00. Attendance recovery is when you are
making up hours because you missed too many days of the class due to absences.
Students pay $5.00 per hour for every hour they must recoup in order to be given
credit. They are given the original grade they earned in the course after making up the
time.
4.
If I took Saturday School for a class, can I do credit recovery? No. Students may not do
credit recovery and attendance recovery for the same course. Even if you made up hours
in Saturday School, that still counts as attendance recovery.
5.
Who do I contact with questions about summer school or whether or not I will be on
grade level if I do not take summer school? Mrs. Anthony. In the summer, you can
reach her via e-mail at [email protected] or by calling 260-5110.
6.
When is registration? June 9 from 1:30-3:30 or June 10 from 8:15-12:00 in the lecture
hall at T.L. Hanna. Please plan to pay with cash or debit. Checks are not accepted.

2015 SENIOR GRADUATION
INFORMATION
We are looking forward to a wonderful graduation ceremony at Bon Secours Wellness Arena
(BSWA) in Greenville on May 23, 2015, and we know that Seniors and their parents are excited
about the big day. There are a number of points that are key to making graduation the
DIGNIFIED and happy event that all students deserve. Our goal is to make this a time of
respectful celebration so that everyone may have his or her individual moment to be recognized.
Seniors must attend all three graduation practices and Awards Night – the roll will be checked.
NO EXCEPTIONS! Any Senior who is not in attendance at each practice for the entire time will
NOT be allowed to take part in graduation. Mrs. Hilton is the only one who can excuse any
absences from practices. Appropriate school dress is expected, and you must wear your school
ID. No visitors are permitted at practice, including children. We will give out many important
items during practices. You must have your school ID to receive these.
Practices at Hanna will begin at 8:15 a.m. and last as long as necessary. If we get cooperation
from the senior class, we can be finished by about 11:00 am. Being tardy to practice will just
prolong the length of practice for everyone. Please note that having to go to work is not an
acceptable excuse to leave practice early.
We will practice at BSWA on Friday, May 22. All seniors will ride Anderson School District Five
School buses to Greenville for this practice. We will meet in the mall area at 7:45 a.m. and
attendance will be taken on the bus at 8:00 a.m. If a student misses the bus, this will result in an
unexcused absence, which may result in the loss of the privilege of marching at graduation.
Some Seniors will have to clear obligations with various teachers and/or the school financial office
before they can get diplomas. Names of those who have outstanding fees will be called out each
day of practice. Any Senior who does not clear all obligations by Tuesday, May 19 at 8:15 am,
will have his/her diploma removed from the diploma cover and held in the office until all monies
are paid. There will be long lines at that time, so Seniors should clear fees EARLY! Also, don’t
forget that we have practice on May 20 and May 21 at TLH, and on May 22 at BSWA.
GRADUATION is on the May 23.
GRADUATION – May 23
Graduation ceremonies begin at 3:30 p.m. - whether or not any Senior and his/her guests are
there! For graduation, all Seniors need to report to the VIP area of the BSWA NO LATER THAN
2:00! Traffic will be very congested, so plan to ARRIVE EARLY. Parking is available in the parking
garage beside the BSWA and costs $5. Be sure to bring your cap, gown, and tassel. You should be
dressed appropriately for graduation. If you choose to dress inappropriately, you will not be
allowed to march, and you will have to pick up your diploma at the school on Tuesday, May 26.
Appropriate dress is:
Men – dark trousers (navy or black) ABSOLUTELY NO JEANS; dark dress shoes (absolutely no
tennis shoes or flip-flops), dark socks, white shirts, dark necktie or bowtie, cap, gown, tassel.
Women – black dresses or black dress pants and black blouse, black low-heeled shoes, cap, gown,
and tassel. Absolutely no tennis shoes or flip-flops of any kind!
At the BSWA, Seniors will enter through the VIP Doors and check in at the designated table. They
will line up in appropriate lines. Teachers will take attendance and check dress code at 2:45 pm.
Junior Marshals will lead Seniors into the ceremony at the appropriate time. At the end of the
ceremony, Junior Marshals will lead Seniors out.
***Please let your family and friends know that it is our desire that the graduation ceremony be
one that is dignified and appropriate as we honor our seniors. We respectfully request that those
who are invited to this ceremony refrain from outbursts, use of noisemakers, and any other
activities that may disrupt the ceremony. Law enforcement will remove any guests who violate
this policy
Crafts Photography will be taking photographs of those who purchase the service ahead of time.
Flyers will be given out at graduation practice.
Creative Video will also be taping the entire graduation ceremony. They will sell these videos for
$25 on the day of graduation and $30 afterwards. Order forms will be available during this
Senior Meeting and at Bon Secours the day of graduation.
