What I’ll be talking about
• Library services are for the customer
• What is an ILS and what is it for?
• The pain of building services on bad data
• A modern library service is aware of the internet
• Koha is ONE component in a quiver of library
services
LIBRARY SERVICES EXIST FOR THE
CUSTOMER
…user-centered design tries to
optimize the product
around how users
can,
want,
or need
to use the product,
rather than forcing the users to change their
behavior
to accommodate the product
Wikipedia, inevitably
…user-centered libraries try to optimize their
services
around how users can,
want,
or need to use the services,
rather than
forcing the users to change their behavior
to accommodate the staff’s current abiblities,
wants or needs

This means, for example:
Cataloguing is for the public
How we go about it should
first and foremost benefit
the end user
In one generation our users have
gotten one extra hour of free time –
every day!
The cost of producing popular cultural

So what does that mean for Koha
• OPL will support development that makes Koha
more service oriented
• OPL will also support development to improve
test coverage, speed and ease of set up (so that
testing patches is as quick as possible)
• OPL believes that both large and small libraries
benefit from a more test-driven and serviceoriented approach
