WCATY is introducing a new five-month payment option to cater to families interested in WCATY programs with other financial
obligations. Families taking advantage of the payment plan will be assessed a $50 service fee to cover processing costs. The service
charge will be divided among the five payments.
The first payment is due on May 27, 2008. Each subsequent payment must be received by the 30th of each month following the
student’s acceptance.

Financial Aid/Merit Scholarship Form
If applying for financial aid or a merit scholarship, this form must accompany your program application. Every effort will be made to
make participation possible for qualified Wisconsin applicants. As part of the application process, please consider:
1. Financial aid and merit scholarships are only available for Wisconsin students.
2. Applicants should first check with school officials to see if local monies are available for course costs.
3. Applicants should inquire about local financial support through businesses, service organizations, etc.
4. WCATY financial aid amounts will be determined on a sliding scale based on need.
5. Merit awards will be determined competitively.
6. Financial aid will only be awarded for one program per student.
Applications will be reviewed by WCATY’s Financial Aid and Scholarship Committee. All requests will be answered and maintained in
confidentiality. Decisions of the committee are final.

Documentation to support Financial Aid and Scholarship Application
1. Submit a completed summer program application, including the $75 application fee.
2. For WCATY Financial Aid, submit 2007 IRS 1040 forms (all applicable schedules). Other documentation can include official free
and reduced lunch notification from the child’s school, documentation of extenuating economic problems in the current year. (e.g.
loss of job, care expenses), or extenuating long-term economic problems in the current year (e.g. loss of family farm).
3. For DPI Precollege Scholarships, submit an original DPI form signed by a school representative and parent. Tax forms must also
be submitted as well as a school transcript. (Forms on the web at: dpi.wi.gov/forms/doc/f1573.doc)
4. For a WCATY Merit Scholarship, the student must submit an essay separate from the application essay that addresses his or her
merit within a highly competitive field of applicants. The student may also submit a portfolio that can be evaluated for scholarliness,
leadership or creativity, transcripts, and copies of past awards or certificates of community service. Letters of recommendation for
merit recognition may also be included.
5. The merit portfolio should be arranged in a manner easily leafed through and should be no larger than standard letter-size
(8-1/2"x11"), contained in a binder of the same dimensions. Original materials of any kind, rolls of drawings, slides, video cassettes
or portfolios exceeding the dimensional requirements of 8-1/2"x11" will NOT be accepted.
6. If you wish to have a portfolio returned, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope in which we may send it back to you.

Important Information about Financial Aid and Scholarships
1. The deadline to apply for financial aid and merit scholarships corresponds to the postmark deadline for the program to which you are
applying. Please refer to the program calendar in the catalog for specific deadline dates. Financial aid and scholarships are available only for
Wisconsin students.
2. Applications will be divided into two categories: a) financial aid based on need and b) scholarships based on merit. Each application will
be evaluated by a committee of adults who know none of the candidates. Applicants will be notified of awards before the first payment
deadline. WCATY has two separate committees for financial aid and merit scholarship selection. You must submit two separate applications if you are applying for both financial aid and a merit scholarship.
3. Financial aid will be determined by analyzing family income and extenuating economic circumstances according to a predetermined
income scale. If you would like more information, please contact WCATY.
4. Merit scholarships will be determined by evaluating the student essay and all supporting materials on a predetermined scale of excellence.
Candidates should keep in mind that a limited number of merit scholarships will be given and that all WCATY students are highly capable
and successful in school. Merit awards are considered portfolio builders, not financial aid.
5. Each financial aid and merit scholarship recipient will be required to write a thank-you letter to his or her sponsor as a condition of final
approval. (Students will receive directions and mailing instructions for the letter during the time they are at the program.) Failure to submit
the thank-you letter will result in forfeiture of the scholarship or financial aid. The family will be billed for the outstanding tuition balance.
6. Failure to submit a complete application may delay consideration for aid. Early application is encouraged.

WCATY courses are designed to meet students where they are academically and provide appropriate fast-paced learning which can
prepare them for future challenges and inspire and help advance them in their studies. In order to make sure that the summer program is an appropriate academic match, please provide the information below.

*Midwest Academic Talent Search (MATS) is a vehicle through which 4th-8th graders in Wisconsin can take the EXPLORE, ACT,
or SAT. These are the same tests designed for eighth grade and high school students. To participate in MATS, students must score
in the 95th percentile or above on a nationally normed, standardized achievement test. Students who score at such a high range have
often reached the “ceiling” on these tests. This means their potential for learning beyond their grade level is not being measured,
thus making it difficult to have a complete picture of these students’ learning needs. The SAT, ACT, or EXPLORE tests help remove this ceiling so we can see just how far students are capable of going academically. Visit www.wcaty.org for more information.
In order to apply under the regular admission criteria, students must have participated in MATS. Please check the statement that best

Standardized Test Scores — A copy of the student’s most recent standardized test scores must be submitted to WCATY. Examples
of standardized tests include the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam (given in 4th, 8th & 10th grade statewide), the California Achievement Test, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, etc. Students must score in the 95th percentile or above in an area of the test

For a Proposal to Receive a Top Score . . .
Originality: 1) unique topic or approach to a topic; 2) creative fluency, flexibility, and elaboration - many ideas related
to the project development and clever, different approaches
to the project.
The project is on the “cutting edge” of new research, or the project presents an old idea in a fresh
new way. The student’s elaboration of the idea and the flair for the unique are vivid and inspiring.
All steps are clearly defined and developed.
Rigor: 1) a high degree of challenge to the project; 2) detailed timelines that indicate the amount of work to be done
over the period (and perhaps beyond)
The project consists of complex ideas and issues normally addressed in advanced high school
work, college or the workforce. The project timeline identifies and elaborates on the steps that will
need to be followed (steps must be distinctive and culminate in an innovative end product). The
student demonstrates a willingness to devote significant time and effort to complete each step.
Quality: 1) sophistication of the project compared to expectations for average 7th and 8th grade students (12-13 yearolds); 2) organization of the project proposal; 3) clarity and
accuracy of the writing.
The student’s writing style includes complex ideas and advanced vocabulary and sentence structures. The student’s project proposal is well-organized in a logical format with clear, connecting
paragraphs.
Ability: 1) academic background related to this project; 2)
the level of motivation that comes through for completing
the work.
The proposal speaks to the student’s motivation and superior ability to self-direct a project. The
recommendation practically insists this student should have an opportunity to develop the project.
The mentor letter reflects a desire to participate in the project and an understanding of the project
goals. The quality of the proposal suggests an extremely able and independent learner.
Scope: 1) clarity of the goals; 2) demonstration of understanding related to time involved and possible barriers.
The proposal defines and explains the project goals. The student is aware of the time involved and
of possible barriers to the project’s success. He or she discusses ways to deal with the obstacles or
changes to the initial plan and the end result will be the scope of project.

to student now and in the future; 2) broader impact of the
project; 3) unique or important benefits to the student from
the mentor/student relationship.
