Sweetheart Switch Dance Saturday
By Andrea Mariani
This year’s Sweetheart Switch dance
is almost here and, as with every
dance, Student Government is hard at
work setting up for the event to make
it extra special for the students.
In years past, there has been a
general valentine theme, but as of this
year, Student Government leader Frau
Jen Laaksonen said, “Sweetheart has
really turned into a ‘no theme’ dance,
and the same is true for this year.”
But while there is not a direct
theme for this year, there are still
many students who put many hours
into working to create a magical night.
Laaksonen noted that freshman
Emily Ness, junior Khari Nickoli and
junior Mary Lovell are really three key
girls who are involved in the behind- the-scene work, as well as other
students on Student Government.
A freshman, Ness explained how
she became such a worker in the dance
preparations.
“A couple of my friends were working on Fall Fest, and now I have been
involved in Mr. NDA and Sweetheart
Switch,” she said.
“We really appreciate volunteers
like Emily,” said Laaksonen. “She may
not realize it but as a freshman we
like to think of her as an ‘indentured
servant’ that we’ll have working and
leading for four years.”
But luckily this dance is one of the
easier ones to put on for the student
body, and Laaksonen and Student
Government members have little to
no concerns at all.
“In comparison to Fall Fest and
Academy Ball, this one is a cake
walk,” Laaksonen admitted.
With minimal work and worries,
now all there is to do is sit back and
wait for the day to come.
But for every dance, attendance is
important and it can make or break
a dance.
“Attendance for Sweethearts is typically good, but it is hard to speculate,”
Frau Laaksonen said.
The music is one of the most important things for a dance, and hiring
the right DJ is key. This year’s DJ will
once again be junior Jake Gerlikovski.
“I’ve DJd at Fall Fest, Sweethearts,
skate night, as well as Mr. NDA, and
places outside of school like parties
downtown in Green Bay,” Gerlikovski
explained. “I enjoy working at the
dances and the experiences I get. I will
most definitely be going into this field
after high school.”
“We get a good DJ at a good cost.
Jake is really beneficial to us, and we
are really going to miss him when
he graduates,” Mrs. Carolyn Brown,
English teacher and former adviser to
Student Government, said.
All school dances are exciting and
a time to have fun with friends and
classmates. Frau, not unlike the students, appreciates the time preparing
and sponsoring the dances.
“The advisers, the chaperones
and I always like to spend time with
students outside of the classroom
environment,” Frau Laaksonen said.
Other students enjoy dressing up,
going out and having a good time
with friends.
“One thing I really like is the
festivities, colors and decorations. It
reminds me of Valentine’s Day and
I’ve always had a great time with my
date,” senior Thomas Brice said.
“Sweethearts is a good way to bring
the school together, stay clean and
have a good time,”
senior Andrea
Umentum said.
endary cartoon, there was a designated
day in November where it was socially
acceptable for single women to chase
the men around town in hopes of
finding a future husband.
The reader was then introduced to
Sadie Hawkins, a single woman whose
whole world revolved around this
singular day.
As the comic’s reputation grew, a
special event to capture the personality
of single Sadie evolved on its own.
Notre Dame students have utilized
an assortment of methods--flowers,
cookies, video raps, flash mobs,
vocabulary quizzes, sidewalk chalk
messages, locker signs, decorated cars,
Facebook, delivered notes--to surprise
a friend with an invitation.
“I look forward
to seeing everyone
at the dance.
There are still
many eligible
‘bachelors’ out
there like Chas
Haas, Cayman
Berg and Mark
Cullen,” said
Andrew Burnett,
student body
president.
Burnett’s comment highlights
the Sweetheart
Switch tradition
of the girl asking
the guy to the
dance. Originally,
this kind of dance
was called a Sadie
Hawkins Dance,
which originated
from a comic
Freshman Emily Ness assists Student Government Adviser Jen Laaksonen in the behind-the-scene planning for
strip. In this leg- the Sweetheart Switch dance. Tradition has it that the girls ask the guys to this dance.
Bobinski’s Basketball Feats Make NDA History
By Kaitlin Kumbalek
Ben Bobinski is a household name
of the basketball program here at
Notre Dame. Bobinski has spent
three of his four years in the program
on varsity and is adding his final
contributions before he graduates in
May.
Bobinski has recently become
NDA’s highest scoring basketball
player in the school’s history, but the
story of his success does not begin
within these walls.
Bobinski has been around the
game for most of his life, dating back
to his childhood memories of playing
at home with his family.
“Basketball has always been a huge
part of my life. It has always been
something I could just do and have
fun with,” Bobinksi said. “When I
was really young, I would play on the
driveway with my brothers, which we
still do to this day.
Bobinski attributes much of his
success to the impact his family has
had on his basketball career.
“My brothers and Dad have played
a huge role in the player and person I
am today,” he said.
Mr. Brian Bobinski, who is not
only Ben’s teacher and mentor but
also his brother, is proud to see his
brother grow as a basketball player
and also as an adult.
“I am definitely proud of the
accomplishments he has made athletically, but more importantly I am
proud of the person he has become,”
Ben Bobinski is pictured below the banner
featuring the names of the scoring greats in
NDA basketball history. Ben’s name will
appear at the top of the list, surpassing former
NDA star and now JV boys basketball coach
Max McHugh.
Mr. Bobinski said.
Ben quickly developed a
love for the game that was
only elevated once he realized the talent he held for it.
“I have always loved
sports, but I don’t know,
something about basketball just stood out to me,”
Bobinski said.
Although basketball does
pose quite the time commitment with both practices
and games during the season,
not to mention his other
commitments such as football, Ben sees the value in his
dedication.
“It takes a lot of commitment and you have to like
the people you are playing
with because you see them
every day,” he said.
As he prepared for high
school athletics, Bobinski looked forward to the
contributions he could make
towards NDA’s success.
“I realized basketball was a
true passion at the beginning of high school because
the commitment level is
much higher so you have to
love it,” Ben said. “I was really
excited because I had a blast
with our 8th grade team and
we were ready to take it to the
next level.”
Bobinski took his level
of play up several notches as he
continued to improve and in turn has
become one of NDA’s most notable
ball players.
As of last week, Bobinski became
the highest scoring player in NDA
history. He had been in the chase for
the 971-point record the whole of
his senior year and finally overtook
the number one spot in the game
against Ashwaubenon. Unfortunately
Bobinski wasn’t able to celebrate his
accomplishment on the home court,
but the NDA community was still
there to cheer him on.
Bobinski has always excelled at the
game while still playing unselfishly
and approaching his success with
a humble sense of modesty that is
respected by all.
Even as he accomplishes something
no one has before, he can’t help but
attribute the accomplishment to his
team.
“It does not matter to me to be
NDA’s highest scorer. Sure, it is cool,
but I will cherish all of the memories
with the team more,” Ben said.
Max McHugh, Junior Varsity
coach and previous record holder, is
happy to see the accomplishment go
to someone as talented and dedicated
as Ben.
“Records are made to be broken,
and I’m really glad I get to work with
a kid who is probably going to do it,”
McHugh said in an interview with
CBS when Bobinski was featured on
the program back in mid-December.
“I’m really, really excited for him.”
As he finishes up his senior year and
final games at NDA, Bobinski appreciates the experiences he has had and
the knowledge he’s gained through his
time on and off the court as a Triton.
“My three years on varsity have
taught me to always be myself and
that I could never work too hard. Playing varsity sophomore year was
a wakeup call,” Bobinski said. “That
year was some of my best basketball
memories just because our team had
great chemistry, and we were a very
unselfish team, which helped us to
have a good season.”
Bobinski plans on continuing basketball into his college years; however,
he is unsure where that will take him,
he said.
He has been talking to schools for
awhile, but says it ultimately comes
down to where he wants to spend his
next four years.
As far as post-high school play,
Bobinski says he will play the game he
loves until he can no longer completely dedicate himself.
“I will play basketball as long as I
am enjoying it and still have a passion
for the game.”
Head Coach Tom Van Deurzen
probably summed up Ben’s accomplishment better than anyone: “He’s
been our leader, our go-to guy. He’s a
very coachable young man who works
hard. He sets the standard, and if
anyone deserves to break the record,
he’s the man.”

Sweetheart Switch Cutest Couples
Seniors: Cole Cupit and Hannah French
Juniors: TJ LeMoine and Ali Lemkuil
What is you favorite attribute about your significant other?
Cole: My favorite thing about her is she’s always there for me even when I’m mad or just being a jerk. She
always has my back and cares about me. Oh, and I guess she’s kinda cute too.
Hannah: He has Netflix at his house. Just kidding, he makes me laugh, but the Netflix too.
When did you start dating?
Cole: August 8, 2012.
Hannah: About six months ago.
How did you first meet?
Cole: Well, technically we both went to the same school when we lived in Dallas in 2nd grade which was
weird but we didn’t realize it until freshman year.
Hannah: We both lived in Dallas in about 1st and 2nd grade. We didn’t figure it out until freshman year.
What was your first date like?
Cole: It was fun. Hannah wanted to ride dirt bikes, but I took her out for ice cream at Zesty’s instead.
Hannah: We went to Zesty’s on Riverside and ate on the pier. He had just gotten his wisdom teeth out.
What is your favorite thing to do with your significant other?
Cole: Well, all the hockey guys know this. We go skiing a lot and sometimes we snowboard too! We actually just got back from Colorado.
Hannah: Playing board games. Haha. It’s so lame, but it’s super fun, especially Apples to Apples and Life.
I always win. Oh, and we like playing Mario Party 8, but the computer always win.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Cole: We’ll probably go out to dinner then watch like six episodes of Friday Night Lights. We’re losers…
Hannah: We’ll probably end up at his house somehow and watch five episodes of Friday Night Lights. It’s
kind of sad because that isn’t even a joke. We did that this past Saturday.
What is your biggest pet peeve about your significant other?
Cole: She beats me a lot. You can even ask Señora Dory! And she’s way too obsessed with dirt biking. I
swear she can replace a carburetor in three minutes. And she never lets me win in our board games!
Hannah: Everyone always says we look like twins and when we went to Vail, all the waitresses thought we
were siblings. That’s always awkward. Also, he’s obsessed with this guy PewDiePie’s YouTube channel, and
he thinks it’s really funny to talk in PewDiePie’s voice.
What is you favorite attribute about your significant other?
TJ: Ali is smart, beautiful and can put a smile on anyone’s face. She is easy to talk to and I can tell her
anything.
Ali: He’s nice to every single person he meets.
When did you start dating?
TJ: August 6th
Ali: August 6th.
How did you first meet?
TJ: We have been locker neighbors since freshman year. She has always had a secret crush on me.
Ali: My friend thought he was cute, so she pointed him out to me.
What was your first date like?
TJ: Before we started dating, we would grab breakfast at Nicolet and get oatmeal with bananas, strawberries and whipped cream.
Ali: I don’t think we had a first date…
What is your favorite thing to do with your significant other?
TJ: We love going to Rascal Flatts together, and I’m looking forward to the Europe trip this summer.
Ali: We’ve been to three Rascal Flatts concerts together, so I guess that’s kind of our thing. Otherwise, we
love to catch breakfast at Nicolet together.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
TJ: I’ve got something planned out…
Ali: “Surprise Dinner Date.” I think it’s only a surprise because neither of us knows what we are doing yet.
What is your biggest pet peeve about your significant other?
TJ: She is smarter than me.
Ali: He is better than I am at calculus.
Sophomores: Connor Yakel and Alexa Wolf
What is you favorite attribute about your significant other?
Connor: The way she laughs at my often not-so-funny jokes and makes me feel like I’m funny.
Alexa: How he always makes me laugh and cheers me up.
When did you start dating?
Connor: March 16, 2012
Alexa: March 16, 2012
How did you first meet?
Connor: In Mrs. Peterson’s 6th grade lit class…sat right across from her.
Alexa: In 6th grade when we sat by each other in lit class.
What was your first date like?
Connor: It was very nerve-racking. It was my first time at her house, and it felt like her dad was staring at
me all night.
Alexa: It was at my house, and I forced him to watch my favorite movie The Titanic, and I think he was a
little nervous.
What is your favorite thing to do with your significant other?
Connor: A nice relaxing evening with Brewer baseball, even though Alexa would sometimes prefer a different program on.
Alexa: Going to Packer games or watching scary movies, but Connor usually doesn’t want to because he
thinks it might get “too scary.”
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Connor: It’s a surprise…shhh!
Alexa: I am not quite sure yet. Connor is still planning, and he won’t tell me!
What is your biggest pet peeve about your significant other?
Connor: She’s much, much, much smarter than I am.
Alexa: When I ask him to call me, and he says, “I will later. I promise!” and then he never does.
Freshmen: Alex Koehler and Hannah Farrell
What is you favorite attribute about your significant other?
Alex: Her eyes.
Hannah: His smile.
When did you start dating?
Alex: We started dating right before Fall Fest.
Hannah: Right before Fall Fest.
How did you first meet?
Alex: Football games.
Hannah: NDA football games.
What was your first date like?
Alex: We went to a movie with friends.
Hannah: Kind of nerve-racking because first dates normally are!
What is your favorite thing to do with your significant other?
Alex: Going to movies together.
Hannah: Watch movies and eat brownies.
What are your Valentine’s Day plans?
Alex: Not sure yet.
Hannah: Nothing yet, hoping for a fun date.
What is your biggest pet peeve about your significant other?
Alex: When she always corrects me.
Hannah: He comes to my basketball games, and I get really nervous.

Kwik Sip Under New Management
Q&A with Thomas Brice and Alex Cheban
By Spencer Flaten
Kwik Sip staff
members Thomas
Brice and Alex
Cheban sat down
to discuss the
upcoming semester
for Kwik Sip.
What’s with the sudden media blitz
from Kwik Sip?
TB: Last semester our profit wasn’t
quite up to par with what we wanted,
so this semester we had a theme of
“New management, same great taste.”
We decided one way to improve
was to get the word out about our
product.
Has it been successful?
AC: The first few days have been very
successful compared to last week,
when profits were average.
TB: Our number one seller is the
Oreo Chiller, so we’ve been trying
to run a promotion on that. For
example, $3 chillers are pretty
successful.
Tell us a little bit about how Kwik
Sip is managed.
AC: Mrs. Montgomery chose the
managers based on leadership ability
and work ethic in class.
What have you learned from
working at Kwik Sip?
TB: One big thing I’ve learned,
especially from being a manager, is
that some of the challenges come
from being in charge of a group of
people. For example, my job as a
marketing manager is to promote our
product. This can be by updating the
sign in front of the school, posters,
morning announcements. It falls on
me to assign specific duties to other
members, and some of the challenges
are whether or not that can be done
in time, and getting approval for a
promotion. Most of all, it’s been a lot
of fun, and I enjoy giving samples out.
AC: I’m the inventory and incentives
manager, and I’ve learned that you’ve
got to keep an eye on the amount of
product we have left. For example, if
we have enough baked goods, milk,
smoothie mix, and chiller mix.
How does Kwik Sip fit into your
plans for the future (business
education, etc.)?
TB: I would like to get a business
degree in marketing when I go to
college. This has given me a little
background and has opened my eyes
on some of the experiences/challenges
I may have in the future.
AC: I plan to get a business degree
as well, but in business management.
Kwik Sip helps me understand how to
work with employees and customers,
and it gives me management
experience.
What do you do with your profits?
AC: We usually go on a class trip
with the money we make. Last year
we went to Wisconsin Dells (the
Kalahari).
Seniors Alex Cheban and Thomas Brice deliver coffee to Journalism adviser Jean
Thillman during first hour. Cheban and Brice hope to pursue degrees in business
next year.
Anything else you want to say?
TB: Guys, when I am standing in
the atrium handing out samples each
morning and I see you walk in with
coffee from Starbucks, a little piece of
me dies inside. Instead of spending
your money at Starbucks, I would like
to see you come to Kwik Sip. Thank
you all and have a nice day.
Old Gym Improvements on the Way
By Spencer Flaten
The changes keep on rolling at
Notre Dame Academy as the old
gym and weight room are slated for
upgrades.
The renovation of the old gym,
which is scheduled to begin at the end
of the school year, will be wrapped
up by August 1. Construction of
the weight room, beginning in early
March, is expected to be completed by
May 20th.
“As we continue to upgrade the
entire campus, we are providing a future for all current students and those
who will attend Notre Dame over
the next few decades. With this next
renovation we will have completely
overhauled the entire building and
campus grounds,” said Ken Flaten,
NDA athletic director and business
manager.
The gym, once affectionately
known as the “Snake Pit,” will be
renamed the Alumni Gym, according
to NDA President Bob Pauly. He said
it will be almost completely redone,
with new flooring, scoreboards and
bleachers being installed. The backboards of all of the baskets will also be
upgraded, and a new batting cage will
be installed for use by the baseball and
softball teams.
The girls’ soccer team, as well as other teams and clubs, uses the old gym for open workouts.
All of the upgrades will make for a
better atmosphere in the gym, Flaten
said.
The freshman basketball teams
will play their games in the gym, and
it will still be used for practice by
multiple teams. The gym will also
continue to host various events such as
the Knights of Columbus Basketball
Tournament, fencing competitions,
Coats for Kids, middle school dances
and parent service group activities,
Flaten explained.
The upgraded weight room will feature brand new equipment including
treadmills, elliptical machines, bikes,
and lifting stations, and promises to
be more female-friendly.
The video room will be repainted
and the carpeting will be replaced
with rubber flooring, similar to that
in the rest of the weight room (which
will increase room for working out).
Also, the ceiling will be raised, allow-
ing for more convenient above-head
weightlifting exercises.
The girls’ locker room will also be
renovated. The new locker room will
be reconfigured to be more spaceefficient, allowing more groups to use
it, such as the dance team.
A new classroom will be added to
the second floor of the priory.
An Alumni Hall, which will recognize distinguished graduates from
both Notre Dame and its founding
schools, will be added into the hallway
west of the auditorium extending into
the new Alumni Gym lobby, Pauly
said.
The school has been keen to expand
its facilities in recent years.
This year’s summer renovation
comes on the heels of the last two
years’ upgrades of the parking lot,
auditorium, stadium handicap accessibility and scoreboard, as well as the
press box and entrance to the baseball
field, Flaten said.
“The renovation of the gym and its
historical significance to the alumni of
both Notre Dame and the predecessor
schools makes this a very exciting final
project as we prepare for the future,”
added Flaten.
The cost of this spring’s projects will
be upwards of $400,000, he said.

cold weather last week, especially since we didn’t get
a ‘cold day’ out of it!
Cheers to the Aida
cast and crew for
their hard work as
they prepare for the
musical’s opening.
Cheers to the Triton babies
that we will soon be welcoming into the NDA family! We can’t wait to meet
baby VanGrunsven, Abler
and VanDeHey!
Isaac Vineburg, senior: “Michelle
Obama. She’d take me out for a nice
healthy dinner, and then we would
discuss important aspects of Barack’s
second term. Plus, she’s a great
dancer.”
Jeers to the students who
skip the Sweetheart Switch
Dance. You should reconsider your attendance; it is
sure to be a good time!
Bailey Pischke, senior: “Channing
Tatum.”
Madi Larsen, sophomore: “Megan
Krewinski. We have the same color
pencil.”
Sam Hennigan, sophomore: “Prince
Phillip from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
I’ve always wanted to dance with a
legit Prince Charming.”
Jackie Weycker, senior: “Joseph
Gordon-Levitt. No questions asked.”
