Two groups of teenagers from very different Columbus communities came together during the Festival of Lights, to light the first candle on the first night of Chanukah. Jewish teens and students from South High School joined at the JCC for a special interfaith community action project and The Kaleidoscope afterschool program had record enrollment this year! For the many children who joined the fun, it was a year filled with visits from COSI and the Ohio Wildlife Center as well as classes with Columbus Children’s Theatre and Free Spirit Tae Kwon Do. Kaleidoscopers read with PJ Library Jewish stories and values. With one-on-one attention in a family environment, kids broadened their horizons and even received homework help just as they would at home. Inna Treskunova 7 Rabbi Nathan & Sylvia Gaynor Jewish Cultural Award Gallery Players’ 66th season musical, Les Miserables, was a smash success, selling out seven of eight shows. With robust performances from a phenomenal cast, it’s no wonder there were rave reviews. The Columbus Dispatch wrote, “Gallery Players’ exhilarating new production of the show does so with strong musical talent and equally strong, and personal, emotional content.” collaborated on a beautiful piece of art designed by artist Hani Hara. About 75 teens participated in this project, Bending the Light: Two Communities, Two Traditions, One Light of Peace. To bend the first light of the Chanukah candle and stretch it beyond the Jewish community, sharing in a common mission—the artwork they created represents the success of that mission and bringing two cultures, two communities into one beautiful light. Campers had a summer full of fun, friends, learning new skills and making memories in the pool, on the ropes course, or while playing gaga, a favorite game which is the Israeli version of dodge ball. Gaga was a highlight. “I wanted to make sure your son’s finger is okay,” said Camp Director Halle Schwartz to one camper’s mom. “…Yes, but under the nail it is black and blue,” she replied. Her son piped up: “At least it is not my gaga hand!” Throughout the adventures, shaving cream and water balloon fights, science and art projects, campers learned about Judaism and Israel and gained a greater appreciation for the natural world outdoors. and The Edelstein Family Band as they tasted wine, beer and vodka, shopped at a silent auction, danced, and had fun with friends. The August 2014 Sports Spectacular, chaired by Lindsay and Joey Schottenstein and Jamie and Matthew Topolosky, continued with a split-day format with a twist. Sunday’s carnival-style “Funtacular,” along with a tennis outing at Wolfe Park and a youth basketball clinic with The Ohio State University Men’s Basketball team, rounded out the day which was fun for all ages. The event concluded on Monday with a golf outing at the Winding Hollow Golf & Events Center. Hundreds of adults and children enjoyed playing, eating and spending time with colleagues and friends. J-Reach celebrated Hanukkah with hundreds of community members at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Wildlights. This was the first time the community gathered to celebrate Hanukkah at Wildlights, and it was a big hit with all ages. Over 200 community members joined together to light the menorah, spin dreidels, and nosh on Hanukkah-themed snacks while listening to Hanukkah music from Marc Rossio along with the glow of the Wildlights. The Columbus Jewish Film Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary with record breaking attendance on Opening Night at the Lincoln Theatre with internationally renowned Israeli filmmaker, Avi Nesher, who presented his hit film, The Wonders. With 13 narrative and documentary films over two weeks, almost every film was a sell-out. Chaired by Jody Altschule and Linda Katz, the 2014 CJFF welcomed directors, local scholars, rabbis, priests, and included a concert with Dan Nichols + E18hteen. Over 230 community members joined to commemorate Victory Day on May 7 at the JCC. Whether young, old, all who came to the JCC’s annual celebration of Europe’s liberation from Nazi occupation enjoyed a great evening. Kosher food catered by the JCC, music from violinist Arkadiy Gips and singing by Cantor Svetlana Portnyansky. The evening also honored the memory of Raisa Patlashenko (z”l), who organized JCC Victory Day celebrations for many years. The 2014 JCC Bookfair continued its 52-year tradition of bringing Jewish authors to the Columbus Jewish community. Carmel Chiswick discussed the effects economics have on our choices in Judaism, David Laskin explored his family through Jewish genealogy, Lisa Barr talked about the Nazis’ efforts to silence contemporary artists during World War II, and Catherine Zacks Gildenhorn shared stories of her journey with her father, Gordon Zacks, as he faced the end of his life. The Singing Chef, Cantor Mitch Kowitz, and communications expert Debra Fine rounded out the program. With the help of community sponsors and the Jewish Book Council, the JCC Bookfair was also able to bring graphic artist Hanan Harchol’s exhibit, Jewish Food for Thought, to the JCC lobby this May. Enrollment is up at all three preschools! With full classes and a wait list in many classrooms, the JCC Early Childhood Programs are running at near-full capacity with over 450 children combined at all three sites. Over 116 Kindergarten Bound students are graduating and moving on to Kindergarten in the fall. Guiding the JCC Early Childhood program is the philosophy of Sheva (the number seven in Hebrew), which has extraordinary power in Jewish thought and practice. It is the name of the JCCs of North America Early Learning Framework signifying the seven core elements of exemplary early childhood practice and deeply rooted in the latest research on child development as seen through a Jewish lens. The Mama Doni Concert and Hanukkah Hop on December 14 was hosted by all three JCC Early Childhood programs and CTA/CJDS.
