2016: The Year of the JCC Maccabi Games
2016: The Year of the
JCC Maccabi Games
The JCC Maccabi Games is one of the largest annual
gatherings of Jewish teens. The week of competition
is enriched by a wide array of CULTURAL and
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. In July 2016, Columbus will
host the Games for the fifth time, the last being in
2004. The JCC Maccabi Games are more than an athletic
competition. They are an experiential program
encompassing the entire community.
Approximately 2,500 people will be directly involved in the Columbus
JCC Maccabi Games, including 850 Jewish athletes, 200 coaches, 400
host families and over 1,000 volunteers. From home hospitality to
volunteering events, all of the community will have a role in this
outreach effort for Jewish teens.

The Abe Weinrib Memorial 5K Trail Run and 1-mile Family
Fitness Walk was a soaring success with almost 200 participants
honoring the memory of Abe Weinrib. A Couch to 5K program was
run in conjunction with the 5K, inspiring others to start or continue
their fitness journeys just as Abe did at the JCC.
Play ball! Thanks to the contributions and hard work from JCC families
and the Bexley community, the JCC softball fields received a makeover
complete with new dugouts, bleachers, a storage shed, and signage.
The “Throwback Thursday” Gala took patrons on a trip down
Memory Lane on March 12. Chaired by Carol Luper and Ben Zacks,
more than 300 guests enjoyed live performances by The Spinners

Two groups of teenagers from
very different Columbus communities came together during the
Festival of Lights, to light the first
candle on the first night of Chanukah. Jewish teens and students
from South High School joined
at the JCC for a special interfaith
community action project and
The Kaleidoscope afterschool program had record enrollment this
year! For the many children who joined the fun, it was a year filled with
visits from COSI and the Ohio Wildlife Center as well as classes with
Columbus Children’s Theatre and Free Spirit Tae Kwon Do. Kaleidoscopers read with PJ Library Jewish stories and values. With one-on-one
attention in a family environment, kids broadened their horizons and
even received homework help just as they would at home.

musical, Les Miserables, was a
smash success, selling out seven of
eight shows. With robust performances from a phenomenal cast,
it’s no wonder there were rave
reviews. The Columbus Dispatch
wrote, “Gallery Players’ exhilarating

and equally strong, and personal,

collaborated on a beautiful piece of art designed by artist Hani Hara.
About 75 teens participated in this project, Bending the Light: Two
Communities, Two Traditions, One Light of Peace. To bend the first
light of the Chanukah candle and stretch it beyond the Jewish community, sharing in a common mission—the artwork they created represents
the success of that mission and bringing two cultures, two communities
into one beautiful light.
Campers had a summer full of fun, friends, learning new skills and
making memories in the pool, on the ropes course, or while playing
gaga, a favorite game which is the Israeli version of dodge ball. Gaga
was a highlight. “I wanted to make sure your son’s finger is okay,”
said Camp Director Halle Schwartz to one camper’s mom. “…Yes, but
under the nail it is black and blue,” she replied. Her son piped up: “At
least it is not my gaga hand!” Throughout the adventures, shaving
cream and water balloon fights, science and art projects, campers
learned about Judaism and Israel and gained a greater appreciation
for the natural world outdoors.
and The Edelstein Family Band as they tasted wine, beer and vodka,
shopped at a silent auction, danced, and had fun with friends.
The August 2014 Sports Spectacular, chaired by Lindsay and
Joey Schottenstein and Jamie and Matthew Topolosky, continued with
a split-day format with a twist. Sunday’s carnival-style “Funtacular,”
along with a tennis outing at Wolfe Park and a youth basketball clinic
with The Ohio State University Men’s Basketball team, rounded out
the day which was fun for all ages. The event concluded on Monday
with a golf outing at the Winding Hollow Golf & Events Center. Hundreds
of adults and children enjoyed playing, eating and spending time with
colleagues and friends.
J-Reach celebrated Hanukkah
with hundreds of community
members at the Columbus Zoo
and Aquarium’s Wildlights. This
was the first time the community
gathered to celebrate Hanukkah
at Wildlights, and it was a big hit
with all ages. Over 200 community
members joined together to light
the menorah, spin dreidels, and
nosh on Hanukkah-themed snacks
while listening to Hanukkah music
from Marc Rossio along with the
glow of the Wildlights. The Columbus Jewish Film
Festival celebrated its 10th
anniversary with record breaking
attendance on Opening Night at
the Lincoln Theatre with internationally renowned Israeli filmmaker,
Avi Nesher, who presented his
hit film, The Wonders. With 13
narrative and documentary films
over two weeks, almost every film
was a sell-out. Chaired by Jody
Altschule and Linda Katz, the
2014 CJFF welcomed directors,
local scholars, rabbis, priests,
and included a concert with Dan
Nichols + E18hteen.
Over 230 community members
joined to commemorate
Victory Day on May 7 at the
JCC. Whether young, old, all who
came to the JCC’s annual celebration
of Europe’s liberation from Nazi
occupation enjoyed a great evening.
Kosher food catered by the JCC,
music from violinist Arkadiy Gips
and singing by Cantor Svetlana
Portnyansky. The evening also
honored the memory of Raisa
Patlashenko (z”l), who organized
JCC Victory Day celebrations for
many years.
The 2014 JCC Bookfair continued
its 52-year tradition of bringing
Jewish authors to the Columbus
Jewish community. Carmel
Chiswick discussed the effects
economics have on our choices in
Judaism, David Laskin explored his
family through Jewish genealogy,
Lisa Barr talked about the Nazis’
efforts to silence contemporary
artists during World War II,
and Catherine Zacks Gildenhorn
shared stories of her journey with
her father, Gordon Zacks, as he
faced the end of his life. The Singing
Chef, Cantor Mitch Kowitz, and
communications expert Debra
Fine rounded out the program.
With the help of community
sponsors and the Jewish Book
Council, the JCC Bookfair was
also able to bring graphic artist
Hanan Harchol’s exhibit, Jewish
Food for Thought, to the JCC
lobby this May.
Enrollment is up at all three
preschools! With full classes and
a wait list in many classrooms,
the JCC Early Childhood
Programs are running at
near-full capacity with over 450
children combined at all three
sites. Over 116 Kindergarten
Bound students are graduating
and moving on to Kindergarten
in the fall.
Guiding the JCC Early Childhood
program is the philosophy of Sheva
(the number seven in Hebrew),
which has extraordinary power
in Jewish thought and practice. It
is the name of the JCCs of North
America Early Learning Framework
signifying the seven core elements
of exemplary early childhood
practice and deeply rooted in the
latest research on child development
as seen through a Jewish lens.
The Mama Doni Concert and
Hanukkah Hop on December
14 was hosted by all three JCC
Early Childhood programs and
CTA/CJDS. Over 300 people
came together at this amazing,
community-building Hanukkah
celebration.

Marc Rossio
For the past 12 years, Marc Rossio has led Tot Shabbat and
Shabbat Assembly for all three JCC Early Childhood Programs.
Rossio has explored different careers, from standup comic
to ad executive, graphic artist to stay-at-home dad. It was
through his experience as a stay-at-home dad that he landed
on a career in music for children and first became involved
with the JCC’s Tot Shabbat program. Marc started by playing
his guitar and singing the music of The Wiggles for his son,
Jack’s playgroup. His reputation as a fun and silly musician
who would fearlessly groove at the children’s level grew from

Volunteer Mitzvah Award
SHANA LEVIN
The Helen Nutis
Volunteer Mitzvah
Award was established by long –time
JCC volunteer, Helen
Nutis, to recognize
the outstanding
volunteer contributions of individuals
or groups at the JCC.
Shana Levin’s volunteer history at the
JCC is extensive and includes chairing
the Early Childhood Parent Committee
for the College Avenue ECE, the Early
Childhood Education Council, and the
JCC Annual Meeting. “The JCC has shaped
and enriched my life tremendously. I love
giving back to a place that has provided
me so many opportunities and offers so
much to so many in our community,” said
Levin. Levin also serves on committees
for fitness and the JCC Maccabi Games,
including chairing the 2016 Jr. Maccabi
Committee. While on the JCC Board of
Trustees, she served as Secretary of the
Board and on the Executive Committee. “I
am truly honored to receive this award. I
do feel there are so many deserving people who should be recognized as well, so
I accept the award on behalf of all of the
JCC’s dedicated volunteers,” Levin added.
Known and loved for her
vitality and individuality,
Mimi Brodsky Chenfeld has
been teaching and sharing
her deep love of children
for over 50 years. “Mim,” as
she is affectionately known
by all her students—from
pre-crawling infants to
pre-Kindergarteners—at the
JCC, has led the JCC Early
Childhood program in Creative
Movement classes for 45
years. She infuses her joyful,
free-spirited movement
classes with playful songs,
upbeat Israeli folk dancing,
and even puppetry. In addition
to her love for kids, Mim is
passionate about creative
education. She believes in
the importance of
integrating the arts with every
aspect of the curriculum,
and is fond of the Talmudic
saying, “The lesson that is
not enjoyed is not learned.”
Mim has published numerous
poems, stories, articles and
books throughout the years,
including Teaching in the Key
of Life, Teaching By Heart,
Celebrating Young Children
and Their Teachers, and the
special 20-year anniversary
collection, Still Teaching In
The Key of Life, which was
published in 2013. Mim’s novel,
The House At Twelve Rose
Street, one of the first
controversial stories for
children and published in
1966, was adapted for television
in 1980 and earned an Emmy
nomination.

even recording records, like “L’Chaim - To Life! – Jewish Kids
Music for the Whole Mispacha!” “For the children of the JCC,
Marc is truly a rock star,” JCC Assistant Early Childhood Director
Taryn Terwilliger said in praise of Marc. Marc has also led
numerous concerts for special events and family programming. A true example of excellence in Jewish programming for
children of all ages, he has taken young Jewish musicians under
his wing and helped guide them as they prepared to be leaders
of Jewish music programs.

ALI SENSER
Past award winner, Lindsay Schottenstein presents the 2015
Award to Ali Senser.
The JCC established the Shem Tov “Good Name” Award in honor of
Larry Schaffer and his outstanding contributions to the Central Ohio
community. The award is presented to an individual who represents
the next generation of community leadership.
Ali Senser has jumped in full force and committed service
to the JCC. Senser currently serves on the JCC Board of Trustees and is the Fundraising Committee Chair of the 2016 JCC
Maccabi Games. She was Early Childhood Parent Committee
Co-Chairperson for JCC New Albany’s preschool from 2012-2014.
Additionally, Senser has been involved with New Albany
ECE fundraising events including the Parents’ Night Out and
Silent Auction programs. “The work that I do is because I
feel strongly about the importance of the Jewish community
and investing in it with my time,” Senser said. The JCC was
one of the first stops her family made when they moved
to Columbus. “We’ve made so many of our friends through
being members of the JCC. It’s always been there at different
points in my life, whether growing up in South Florida or living
in New York or Columbus. I can’t wait to see how my kids
continue to enjoy the JCC. As they grow up, I just know that
there’s so much that the JCC has to offer my family.”
