WELCOME TO MARTIN, SLOVAKIA !
Thank you for your trust and mandate to organize historically the first
global meeting of collectors. Already now cordially invited to this event
collectors from around the world.
Our town is situated at the north of Slovakia near the borders with
Poland and the Czech republic. It is 230 kilometres north-east from
Bratislava. It is the district town and historic centrum of the Turiec
region. Martin has
60 000 citizans. The town became the centre of
slovak culture in the 19. century and in the 1994 was Martin announced
by the law as the national culturural centrum of all slovak people.
Club of the beer souvenir collectors, Porter club in Martin, was
established in 1992. Last year (October) was the 20th anniversary of
foundation of the club. Members of the club visit various collectors
events and beer-actions as in Slovakia, so in other countries. Porter club
cooperates with many collector clubs and it has lot of friends all around
the world.
We have rich experience with organizing big international collectors meetings. Porter club organizes
every year in october big two-day international collector meeting in the sports hall in Martin. It is
attended by about 400 participants from 18-20 europe countries.
We work responsibly on organizing the First worldwide meeting of collectors 2013 in Martin. We have
already created 22-member organizational team, which is going to work per parts at 1st BCWC. In this
team you can find representatives of Porter Club, Martin, general sponsors and delegates of the town of
Martin as well as people from different lines of business. The main aim of this team is organizational,
logistic, financial and cultural securing of whole event.
The schedule of preparation is planned for 12 months, starting October 2012 till September 2013. It
includes 70 particular tasks in organization, logistics, promo, finance, culture etc. It is an internal
document for the needs of the organization team. Tasks done and completed will gradually be published
in English on our webpage www.porterclub.szm.sk.
We have a detailed program for 4 days (3.-6.October 2013) and
financial budget. Its main part is the contribution from the town of
Martin, Porter club, Slovak Association of Brewing History and
contracted sponsors. The finance will mainly be used for purposes of
promotion, logistics, culture and souvenir-making. We are dealing
with sponsors and breweries. We have the official logo. We are in
contact with the coordinators in different countries.
We will make everything for you. I believe that in Martin all
participants will survive happy and wonderful beer days together.

INTRODUCING MARTIN TOWN
Martin is a city in northern Slovakia, situated on the Turiec river, between the
Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra mountains, near the city of Žilina. The population
numbers approximately 60,000, which makes it the eighth largest city in
Slovakia. It is the center of the Turiec region and the District of Martin.
The first recorded reference to Martin in written sources is dated to 1284 under
the name of Vila Sancti Martini. In the turbulent 15th century, Martin suffered
from many disasters, for example from the attack of the Hussites in 1433, when
the town was burned down. Just 10 years later, it was destroyed again by an
earthquake and Martin started to be slowly degraded from royal to the
privileged town and under direct influence of the Révay family. Since the 18th
century, Martin became centre of the Turóc county.
The town became the foremost Slovak cultural center in the 19th century. Several cultural institutions
(including Slovak Matica and Slovak National Museum) were founded there. Most political activities
leading to the Slovak national emancipation in the 19th and early 20th centuries were organized in or
from Martin. Today, it is the seat of the Slovak National Library and Slovak Matica. National Council of
the Slovak Republic declared the City of Martin the center of national culture of the Slovaks on August
24, 1994.
The oldest building is a Romanesque church
dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours (13th century).
The Slovak National Museum placed its ethnographic
collection in Martin. An open air museum in the
suburbs, the Museum of the Slovak Village
(Jahodnícke háje), exhibits the traditional rural
architecture and folk traditions of the region of
Turiec. The Slovak National Cemetery is the official
Slovak hall of fame. The Slovak Chamber Theatre in
Martin was established in 1944 as the second
professional theatre company in Slovakia. The theatre
building is a landmark of the city center.
Today Martin is home to a Volkswagen Group owned automotive industry production plant, under the
Volkswagen Slovakia, a.s. subsidiary. Opened in 2000, it employs approximately 800 people. The Danish
shoe company Ecco is situated near to the Kosuty II borough. Next to the city center (downtown) are two
big employers, namely Neografia Martin (printing company) and the University hospital. Other well
known companies are Skanska, Viena International and Hoechst-Biotika.
Martin is home to the Jessenius School of Medicine which is 1 of 3 medical schools in Slovakia. Up to 400
Norwegian medical students are currently studying there. The city's system of primary education
consists of nine public schools, two private primary schools and two religious primary schools. Secondary
education is represented by two gymnasia, three specialized high schools (Business Academy Martin)
and three vocational schools.
Martin is near the main Slovak road from Bratislava to Košice, as well as being near the main railway.
Martin is surrounded by Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra mountains, which in winter offer excellent
conditions for skiing and in summer for hiking.

INTRODUCING PORTER CLUB
The Porter Club of Brewery Souvenir Collectors was established in
1992. The Porter club is a civic organization with interests the
history of and main collections of brewer souvenirs or collectibles.
The entire purpose of the club is to satisfy the interests of the
members by securing different collecting materials and offering the
members the expertise and methods of help, necessary literature,
catalogues and addresses, as well as to maintain contacts with
breweries and other collecting organizations of similar character in
Slovakia and abroad.
Members of the club regularly meet twice a month in the
club meeting room, where the work toward solutions to different club questions about the changing
collecting material and experience. The club has at is this time 28 active members from Martin and the
surroundings a some members from abroad. The various interests and various activities makes the club
one of the most active among all of Slovakia´s clubs of similar purpose.
Among the most significant events the club organizes is the large international meeting of collectors at
which there are always 400 participants from Slovakia, Czech republic, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine,
Lithuania, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, Serbia, Bulgaria,
Holland, Austria and other countries. The members of the club visiting many different collectors
meetings in Slovakia and Czech republic, but also regularly travel to Dresden (Germany) and Zywiec,
Tychy, Szczecin (Poland), and actually are travelling to Ukraine (Kiev, Lvov), to Russia (Moscow),
Austria (Laa a.d.Thaya), Lithuania (Vilnius, Ukmergé), Luxembourg (Mountfort).
Many members of the club collect mainly beer
labels, coasters, beer cans and glasses. Some of the
members have sought to achieve among the best in
Slovakia, which now establishes their standing in
annual national reviews of collections, which the
club regularly arranges.
From the initiative of some of the members of the
club, it also founded the Slovak Association History
of Breweries which is located in Martin and which
has advanced the entire collecting movement of
brewery material collecting to a higher quality level.
Within the area of associations are seven civic
collecting clubs in Slovakia. This Association also
puts out a collecting magazine „Pivne hobby“, an
organizing service of beer labels collecting and
further collecting information.
In the year 1997 the club was recognized as first in Slovakia with the „Zlatý korbel“ Award from the
Civic Clubs of Czech republic, as a result of the active work in the interest of club collectors throughout
the country. Three members of the club in the past received the award "collectible person"
In recent years the club prepared in musem two large exhibitions "Beermania" and "Beer collectors
eyes" In October last year Porter club celebraded the 20th anniversary of the club´s foundation.
