Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to our first newsletter of the
session. After a relaxing summer break our
pupils and staff have settled quickly into
their new timetables, ready to embrace the
challenges of the new academic year as we
continue on our journey to excellence.
SQA Results
Returning to school in August we were
delighted to receive an excellent set of SQA
results. We have not only continued to
maintain our high standards of success
across all stages but have recorded
significant increases in the number of
students achieving 5 or more National 5s
(up 9%), the number of students achieving
1+ Highers (up 12%) and the number of
students achieving 3+ Highers (up 9%).
The way in which attainment and
achievement in Scottish schools is
measured has changed from ‘STACS’ to
‘Insight’. Insight data for 2015 will be
published on Friday 4th September. An
analysis of this data will be provided at the
Parent Council AGM and a summary will be
included in the next edition of the Turnbull
Times.

The outstanding attainment and

on Wednesday 30 September at 7pm. Our

Welcome to S1
I would like to extend a special welcome to all our first
year pupils and parents. The pupils have made an
excellent start to their secondary education with
teachers commenting positively on their attitude and
work ethic.
I am very pleased to inform you that Mrs Britton has
been appointed to the post of Acting Principal Teacher
of Pupil Support. Mrs Britton will have responsibility
for Marian House and takes up her post with
immediate effect. I am sure you will join with me in
wishing her every success in this new post.
Preparations are already underway for the First Year
Welcome Mass which will take place on Wednesday 24
September in Turnbull High School at 7pm. All S1
parents and carers will receive an invitation inviting
them and their extended family to join us for this very
important event in our Liturgical Calendar.
Mrs Cimmino (PT English) began her maternity leave
on Friday 28th August. Mrs McQuarrie will take up the
position of Acting PT of English from Monday 31st
August with Mrs Paul taking up the position of Teacher
of English for this period of maternity leave.
Mrs Bray, Depute Head Teacher for S1, in partnership
with the Pupil Support Team, will be pleased to
respond to any questions you may have about how
your son/daughter is settling into S1.
Annual General Meeting
All parents and carers are invited to attend the
combined AGMs of the Parent Council and the PTA on
Tuesday 15th September at 7pm in the Conference
Room.
Uniform
Once again I would like to thank our parents and carers
for their support of our uniform policy. Uniform help
to develop a sense of inclusion, belonging and pride in
our school community and reduces incidences of low
level indiscipline. A small number of female students
are not wearing skirts of an appropriate length or
material. Skirts should be knee length and loose
fitting. Your support in remedying this situation as
quickly as possible would be greatly appreciated.
Sexual Health and Relationship Education
On Tuesday 15th September there will also be an
opportunity for parents to review and discuss the
materials used by Turnbull High School in regards to
sexual health and relationship education. Materials will
be on display from 6:30pm in the Assembly Area.
Staff News
I would like to thank you, our parents and carers, for
your continuing support. I feel very privileged to be
the Head Teacher of Turnbull High School. We have
outstanding students supported by an excellent staff in
partnership with our parents. I look forward to
continuing to develop this partnership in the year
ahead.
We are delighted to welcome Mrs Bernadette Allan to
our school community. Mrs Allan, along with Mrs
Wallace, will be responsible for developing our
Wellbeing Support Base within Turnbull High School.
The establishment of Wellbeing Support Bases is an
East Dunbartonshire initiative which you will hear
more about in future editions of the Turnbull Times.

GROUPCALL MESSENGER
Throughout the academic year, the school looks to work in
partnership with parents by providing information about
attendance, progress and school activities.
This has traditionally been through a “bag drop” where
materials are issued to pupils to be taken home. While this
was a straightforward system, it can result in delays or non
delivery if pupils forget they have materials to take home
As a consequence, the school will be looking to replace the “bag drop” with a “paperless” electronic
communication system called Groupcall Messenger. The system gives the school the ability to send messages
via text (SMS), email (with attachments), voice and Twitter to the mobile phones and landlines of parents, staff
and key contacts (in multiple languages).
Groupcall Messenger is installed in over 5,000 primary and secondary schools in the UK delivering in excess of
40 million secure messages every year with 4 million emails and 800,000 voice calls.
By making this change we hope to be able to contact you more quickly, support our Eco Schools status (by
minimising paper) and ensure that messages we send are received by you and not lost in the post. We will also
use this system to broaden the range of information you regularly receive – for example alerts about events,
homework or punishment exercises and online surveys to gather your opinions.
However, for Groupcall to function effectively we need to have up to date contact details for yourself.
Therefore could I please ask you to ensure that the annual data check form is returned to the office ASAP and

Parent Council and PTA AGM—15 September at 7pm
All parents/carers of Turnbull pupils are encouraged to attend.
Anyone interested in joining the Parent Council, especially parents with children in S1, please
send your name to Mrs Kennedy and attend on the night.
This is an opportunity for all parents to tell the Parent Council what their priorities should be in
the coming year. The Parent Council can best represent your views if you tell them directly
what those views are.

Allergies – Anaphylactic Shock
Many of our young people suffer from range of allergies. Whilst it is
not possible to give a guarantee that the school environment will be
completely allergen free, we do request that young people do not
bring nuts or food stuffs containing nuts into school. Please help us
ensure that Turnbull High is a nut free zone.
Each young person affected by severe allergies must carry inhaler,
Piriton and Epipen with him/her at ALL times as appropriate. This is
especially important should the young person be going out of school
to attend an event or go on a trip. Medication required to combat
allergic reactions and anaphylaxis should NOT be stored in the school
office (unless a spare) or left with office staff.
Parents/carers must ensure that their child comes to school with the
correct medication in date, clearly labelled and with their son/
daughter’s name on it.

CARITAS AWARD
What is the CARITAS
AWARD?
Any pupil in their final year of school can ‘sign-up’ to
participate in the CARITAS AWARD. Parishes may
nominate young people for the award, where no
Catholic school is available to do so. The award is
designed to be inclusive of all young people and is
open to all pupils who can meet the success criteria
for the award. Pupils can choose how they would like
to record and share their learning, reflection and
witness from a number of formats. Pupils studying at
all levels will be able to achieve the requirements for
the award.

The Pope Benedict XVI CARITAS AWARD encourages
and promotes the ongoing faith journey of young
people. It recognises that some are already active and
committed within their homes, schools, parishes and
dioceses and it invites others to respond to God’s call
of love. It supports and celebrates the faith witness
which young people give within their communities.
If your son/daughter is in S6 please encourage
him/her to sign-up for this award.
Introduced in 2011, this award asks young people to
use their faith learning as a starting point for further
faith reflection, leading to actions which show their
faith witness. Participants in the Caritas Award will be
supported in deciding how they can develop and use

Students who are eligible for EMA should complete the EMA Learning Agreement form and return this to Mrs Kerr.

Arrive at school and classes on time daily
Follow in full the course and assessment requirements for the above courses of study
Maintain high standards of behaviour and discipline
Demonstrate a positive attitude to learning including wearing full school uniform
Provide immediate notification of the reasons for any absence
Work hard to be successful in their chosen courses
Please be aware that no payment can be made for "allowed absences" without the return of a completed self
certificate.
Further details are available in the EMA documentation sent to young people and their families.

inspiration in our learning. Communication with
others and access to unlimited information is now
immediately accessible to us at the click of a
button.

take to ensure that young people are protected on
line and are able to act responsibly should they find
themselves in an uncertain situation or victim of
cyberbullying.
A first step would be to install parental controls on
all computers, laptop, tablets, mobile phone and
other internet accessible devices which your child
has access to. Internet providers can provide
information on this or there are free downloadable
versions and clear instructions available on line. For
example, you can visit Google’s information safety
centre for simple step by step guides at

Young People’s Rights
Young people’s rights (under 18 years old) are
outlined in the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are here
to protect young people. Cyberbullying can take
away their rights. Some key UNCRC rights are:
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre
(CEOP) advises you also to talk to your child about
online safety. Their website offers age and stage
appropriate advice for young people and parent/
carers. Their website is www.thinkuknow.co.uk. It
is a clear and accessible resource which we also use
in school as we promote online safety.


Some cyberbullying actions are illegal. There are
laws to protect young people against this, such as
the Communications Act 2003.
When using the internet and communicating with
others online, it is very important to think safety

forget that what they say and do on line can have
immediate real time impact, repercussions and
consequences. Our Community Police Officer

in place to protect us and through which young

“ You don’t have to like me, agree with me or even play with me…
but you do have to respectme”
Consider these statements: Do you send or pass on messages or images of people without thinking about the
impact it can have? Do you tease or make fun of people online? Do you make prank calls?
All of these can be seen as cyberbullying and any of these only needs to happen once to make others feel
worried or scared.
Some cyberbullying behaviour is also against the law; you
could find yourself in serious trouble. This could impact your
family and your future chances in life.
Stop and think before you send or pass something on, think
about the impact it can have on the other person and the
impact it could have on you!

SPACE SCHOOL
I was one of the 100 S5 pupils from across Scotland
who was chosen to attend the Scottish Space School
in Strathclyde University from the 14th-19th of June.
The Scottish Space School aims to inspire pupils who
are interested in careers in engineering, science and
medicine and to give the pupils an amazing
experience.
NASA is doing and life aboard the space station.
Other NASA guests were also present including
engineer Heather Paul and Astronaut Tom
Marshburn. Heather Paul was really interesting to
hear from as she told us the importance of doing
something that you love, giving us an inspiring
speech.
When we arrived we were sorted into teams, each
team was named after one of the first space walkers
in honour of the 50th anniversary of the first
spacewalk. Our first team challenge was to create a
capsule that when dropped from a balcony, would
protect an egg. This activity started off our fast
paced and event filled week.
Later in the week, my team had to come up with a
product that would improve the exercise that
astronauts need to do to stay fit and healthy in
space. We had to pitch our ideas to a panel including
our NASA guests, presenting them with posters and
trying to promote our projects. As a team we had to
work together to create ideas that we thought would
work and use problem solving to work around issues
that would affect our design, tasks that NASA
engineers deal with on a daily basis.
Our days started at 9am and finished 10pm and were
full of activities. We were given an insight into the
different courses in engineering that Strathclyde
offered and there were activities related to all these
different kinds of engineering, such as civil
engineering, mechanical engineering and biomedical
engineering. We built and launched rockets, built a
space bridge from uncooked spaghetti, set up a
heart rate monitor and used rovers to explore a
model of a crater on mars. Through these activities
we were able to learn more about the roles that
different engineering practices have in space travel
and exploration, giving us a hands on experience.

and the work that NASA does and we were given the
experience of working as a team, using problem
solving and creativity. It was a wonderful and
inspiring experience and showed me that “The sky is
not the limit”. I also met pupils from all over
Scotland and made some great new friends.

Turnbull Band Trip 2015
The summer holidays may feel like the distant past but in the music department we have very happy memories
of another immensely successful band trip.
The last week of term saw Turnbull’s own Big Band, Jazz Band and roadies climbing aboard Mr Hoyle’s Boogie
Bus for the drive down to Liverpool. The bands performed two concerts and drew large crowds with their
energetic performances. Word must have reached Chester that we would be performing there as we even
entertained the Lord Mayor! As if this wasn’t all fun enough, the staff and pupils enjoyed the ‘Beatles
Experience’, a (brief) look round ‘the Tate’, a performance of ‘Wicked’, a tour of Anfield Stadium, a day at Alton
Towers and Mr Hoyle’s regional accent announcements on the bus microphone.
We, teachers (and Gerry the bus driver), were all thoroughly impressed with the exemplary behaviour of our
young musicians and can give testimony to the outstanding representation that they afforded Turnbull High
School.

S3 pupils Lauren McFarlane and Eva Ralston will be showcasing their talent
at the World Street Dancing Championships at the SECC on Friday 28 August.
The girls qualified for the event back in June. We wish them every success
competing at this level and look forward to hearing about their experience.

ART Department
During June, near the end of the
academic session 2014/2015, a group
of pupils from S1-S2 attended a short
course in web design, delivered by
Mr. Rafferty.
This was one of a range of alternative
pursuits provided by Turnbull High
School to its pupils prior to the
summer holiday break. Shown, are
some of the pupils who successfully
completed this 3 Day Course which
provided experiences in the following;
Creating HTML documents using code,
filming and inserting a video clip to
introduce theme, creating visual
navigational structures, designing and
producing web pages using Serif
WebPlus.

All pupils who attended received a certificate of completion to be added to their personal record of educational

Saint Philomena Day of
Prayer
at Carfin Grotto
The Saint Philomena day of prayer took place on
Saturday 22nd August. The program saw the
celebration of a Holy Mass, the veneration of
relics and the procession at the Church of St
Francis Xaviers Parish and Carfin Grotto . Here we
can see Filumena and Cara helping out at Carfin
Grotto.

Hosting a tea party to raise funds for Marie Curie cancer care has
become a popular way to raise funds for the organisation, and
on the 17th of June, Turnbull High's Youth St Vincent de Paul
Society hosted its own.
The event was a culmination of all of our hard work, and all of
the planning and organising was definitely worth it. On the day,
the hall was full of people. Among our invited guests were
members of East Dunbartonshire Council : Provost Walker. Cllr
Gotts (Convener of Education), Cllr Hendry (Vice Convener of
Education) and Cllr McNair (Parent Council member). Former
members of our SVDP group, representatives from Cadder Golf Club and teachers were welcome to come along
too. There was tea, coffee and cakes as well as snacks that could be bought by pupils. We also organised a very
successful raffle and silent auction and the school choir sang a few songs to entertain everyone.
Overall, the tea party was an fantastic afternoon and we managed to raise the huge sum of £4,026.50 - more
than double our original goal! The fundraising was extremely satisfying for each member of SVDP since we all get
involved to help members of the community. The knowledge that the money we raised will contribute to
running such a wonderful organisation motivated us to do the best job we possibly could.
The SVDP Youth Conference is always looking for new members. We meet in the RE department every
Thursday lunchtime. Please encourage your son/daughter to consider joining us.

Super cyclist Patrick, nominated for young
fundraiser of the year
Back in October 2014 Patrick Kiehlmann
(S1) cycled the 1,000 miles from Lands End
to John O'Groats raising £5,000 for Yorkhill
Children's Charity in the process. This
tremendous achievement took just 11 days.
As a result of his efforts Patrick has been
nominated from 10,000 nominations as the
only Scottish Finalist for the Just Giving
Young Fundraiser of the Year.
We wish Patrick luck for the final which
will take place in London in September.

JUNIOR ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY
Our Junior Annual Awards Ceremony took place on Monday 15th June. This afternoon of celebration marked
the successes and achievements of over 90 students in S1-S3.
Three categories of awards were presented:
The Successful Learner Award presented to the highest attaining student in each subject. This award

The final award recognises students who have made a positive

Quiz night
Win up to £50 in our
monthly draw for only
£12 per year.
You can find the mandate form on the school
website. Complete the form and return to
the school.
We will be holding our quiz night on 2nd Oct at
7pm in St Dominic’s Church Hall. This is always a
popular night. BYOB.
Halloween Disco
Snow Ball
The PTA intend to host another Halloween
Disco in the school hall. The year group is still
to be confirmed. It will be held on Wed, 28th
Oct from 7-10pm. Fancy dress will be compulsory. More details to follow.
Following the success of last year’s
Senior Snow Ball,
we intend to organise another on
17th December. It will be open to
S5 and S6 so buy tickets early
to avoid disappointment..
PTA Emailing list
We regularly send out emails ot over 100 families of
Turnbull pupils. This is our easiest way to inform
the community of events we are organising. If you wish to join

Millport Cycle
As you are hopefully
aware, we are organising
a cycle around the Isle of
Cumbrae on 19th Sept.
Forms have gone out to
every family with all the
details and
should be returned by 4th
Sept. We are
hopeful this
will be well
supported and become a
standard event in our
PTA
calendar.
Our joint AGM with the parent’s council will be held at 6.30pm on 15th sept in the
boardroom. Please come along to find out more about both organisations.
