Invitation
Since 2002 EURADOS Annual Meetings (AM) are key elements in the agenda of the community
working in the field of ionising radiation dosimetry. It has become a tradition to combine statutory
actions of EURADOS with meetings of EURADOS Working Groups and also with events of general
interest such as the EURADOS Winter School or a workshop dedicated to a topic of particular importance.
The AM2016 will take place on 8-11 February 2016 at the Politecnico di Milano. The meeting includes the 9th EURADOS Winter School "Dosimetry for epidemiological cohorts”. It is planned to
provide all presentations of this event on the EURADOS website.
This second announcement shows the overall program as well as the topics and the speakers of the
presentations during the Winter School. We encourage you to register and to book your hotel at
your earliest convenience. Please consider that due to the concomitance of other important events
scheduled in Milan on February an early booking is strongly suggested.
We look forward to seeing many colleagues from the EURADOS network and also many other persons interested in the topics of AM2016 in Milano.

9th EURADOS Winter School "Dosimetry for epidemiological cohorts"

Scope:
Quantification of detrimental effects to humans after exposure to ionizing radiation is one of the
most important goals of radiation protection research. While there are many biological endpoints
that could be considered, incidence and mortality of cancer (solid tumours and leukaemia) and,
more recently, some non-cancer diseases (e.g., cardio-vascular diseases) are most relevant. In this
regard, epidemiological studies on individuals exposed to ionizing radiation provide indispensable
information. More specifically, evaluation of dose-response relationships obtained in these studies
provide information on the corresponding disease risk per unit dose, which in turn forms the basis
for international recommendations on the protection of workers and the public against ionizing
radiation. Thus, health effects (y-axis in a dose response relationship) and exposures (x-axis in a
dose response relationship) both require an equally thorough quantification.
The 9th EURADOS Winter School is dedicated to the dosimetry for radio-epidemiological cohorts.
Given the fact that different radio-epidemiological studies are often characterized by different exposure situations, the lectures in the School make an attempt to describe various investigated cohorts with an emphasis on the dosimetric techniques and procedures used to quantify radiation
exposure of the investigated individuals. Studies addressed include those on the atomic bomb
survivors, Techa River and Fukushima population, nuclear workers including those at Mayak, Russia, uranium miners, and medically exposed individuals. All lectures will be given by internationally
well-known scientists who are involved in the dosimetry of the described radio-epidemiological
studies.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Milano can be reached conveniently by air thanks to three airports, Milano Malpensa, Milano Linate
and Milano Orio al Serio.
From Milano Malpensa terminal 1 the train “Malpensa express” connects directly to the stations
Milano Cadorna (in turn connected to subway lines MM1 and MM2), Milano Centrale (MM2) and
Milano Garibaldi (MM2). The train stops also at the station “Bovisa Politecnico” at walking distance
from the venue and the hotels close to the venue.
From Milano Linate the bus n° 73 connects to piazza San Babila (MM1)
From Milano Orio al Serio the bus “Orio shuttle” connects to Stazione Centrale (MM2)
From Milano downtown, Bovisa can be reached:
1) with the suburban trains S2, S3, S4, S13 or with the regional trains. All trains stop at the station “Bovisa Politecnico”.
2) with the suburban trains S6, S11, S14, or with the regional trains stopping at the station
“Villapizzone”.
