NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB www.norcalgrc.org Golden Notes SPRING 2014 Elected Officers: President Suzanne Bria Secretary/Treasurer Lisa Newton 1675 Fallen Leaf Los Altos, CA 94024 VP Performance Christine Hsu VP Breed Robin Baker VP Field Scott Woodland Director Laura Finco From the President: Suzanne Bria This will be my first message in an issue of Golden Notes since being elected as president, and as strange as it may seem to those of you who know me, I'm finding myself a bit at a loss for words! The one thing I am certain I want to say is a huge THANK YOU to our outgoing Board members for all the hard work and dedication they have put into serving the club: Nancy Kelly, Terry Southard, and Eileen Oshiro who served as president for four years and is continuing as chair of the 2016 National Specialty committee. We may not say it enough to each other, but your dedication as volunteers for the club is – simply put – what makes it work. I look forward to good times and success working with the current Board toward achieving all our goals and maybe even some new ones! When I think of NORCAL GRC of which I've been a member for only about 10 years now, so many thoughts go through my mind, and so many experiences – even in this short amount of time compared to many of the members. I acquired my first golden retriever – my first dog – in 1997, and the first dog I ever did any formal activities or earned any titles in 2002. So truly I am a relative newbie! It seems every day I am reminded of how little I know about dogs and how much there still is to learn. It is a very humbling experience. When I think of NORCAL GRC I think of all the members and hundreds of dogs and all the activities you are engaged in throughout the year. The amount of dedication, time spent, expertise, and determination is astounding to me! Every year at the awards luncheon I am amazed all over again at what you all accomplish with your dogs. Some of us focus our time and energy almost entirely in one area like Director agility or field, obedience or conformation. Others of us train and show in Pamela McDonald several areas or dabble in many. A few have even reached the highest levels of achievement in multiple areas – but all of us demonstrate the incredible versatility of our breed! Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan VOLUME 44, ISSUE II But none of us do it alone. If it weren't for club members who encouraged and mentored me and helped guide me to the best classes and trainers, I would probably never have accomplished anything with my dogs. And it certainly wouldn't have been much fun either! I have made wonderful friends through the club, people I would never have met otherwise. So my first plea – or challenge if you will – to all of you who belong to NORCAL GRC is this: Take the time to reach out to another member and encourage that person to try something new by helping him or her get started, or ask for them to help introduce you to their area of expertise. We already have tremendous crossover in our club; I would love to see even more. Doing so will help us get to know each other better and gain even more respect for our fellow members. Also, we all know someone in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, or perhaps the result of our breeding – people who are not members of our club, whom we might call "pet people." Why not reach out to one of them as well and invite them to an event or activity so they can see what it's all about! Who knows, they might get just as excited as we are and even end up joining the club! At the very least it is an educational opportunity. Last but not least, in all of the fervor of our pursuits with our dogs, take the time to nurture the most important part of our relationships with them: just being together. A walk on the beach, a cuddle in the grass, tossing balls in the park. Our magnificent Golden companions are with us for such a relatively short time, so love them every minute! After all, they don't care about the competition and the titles; they only care about us. Bless 'em! Cheers to all, Suzanne Inside this issue: From the President 1 Editor’s Bark 2 General Mtg Minutes 3 New Members 3 Board Minutes 4, 5 Specialty Update 5 Members Brags 6 WC/WCX Report 7 Beat the Heat Flyer 8 Club Information 10 Events Calendar 11 GOLDEN NOTES Page 2 Note: In this edition I opted to share with everyone the AKC Chair’s Report. You cannot buy a fan base. You create it by telling stories about the many things that happen in our world, throughout the day, throughout the years. New York, NY – If you’re anything like my wife and I, it all started the day you brought that one dog into your life. For us, it was Caesar - our first Bullmastiff. Since there was no Internet back then, we found him through the classifieds in our local paper. He was a great dog, just not a great Bullmastiff. But that didn’t matter to us. We loved him - and lost him much too early. But in that short time, he made us fall in love with the Bullmastiff breed. We researched the breed and breeders, learned about conformation events, attended dog shows, and began to collect that array of breed paraphernalia that somehow invades every corner of your home. I imagine many of you are wearing your breed on you somewhere right now – pins or jewelry or clothing or even, I would wager, some have a tattoo. There are people and organizations that don’t want the truth about the AKC to be known. Hate may attack it and ignorance may ridicule it, but in the end, the truth is irrefutable. While yawns, laughter, and germs are infectious, the most powerful infectious thing is spreading the truth. As true fans, we will stay strong, stand up for dogs, and speak out for our values. And we won’t stop until every critic becomes a fan. Next flyer day will be April 27 at Denverton with pheasant. OLD BUSINESS: Awards: Nancy Kelly and Laura Finco report that 70 percent of membership dues is going to the awards cost due to the numerous titles now recognized by the AKC. Small plaques are now $35-39 and large are $55-58. Bars cost $6.95-8.10 per bar. We order about 92 bars and between 18 and 28 small plaques each year. Handout with Awards Committee suggestions is provided (see attached). Our focus is on streamlining the top awards and also providing certificates for lower tier titles, so that recognition will be given but not quite as expensive for our club. It is agreed we need to streamline and adjust our awards in order to lighten the load on our budget. Agreed to discuss further at next meeting. Membership: Discussion recommending a policy change for membership: joining mid year, an annual volunteer requirement, and life membership discussed. Banquet: The Awards Banquet was a huge success: The venue was well received, we had good attendance and it was a very fun atmosphere for our members. Tablecloths again? Yes! We thank Pam McDonald for her hard work and quick action on finding a venue for us very quickly when our past venue became unavailable, and generally chairing this event. She also organized a wonderful charity auction during this event, as well as very fun door/raffle prizes. Christine Hsu prepared and delivered a beautiful dessert menu of homemade cupcakes, as well as providing auction items. Lisa Newton assisted with contributions to cupcakes and the raffle donation. Terry Southard found and ordered leashes that left us all hoping to hear our name called – and extended her thanks to Christine for organizing a donation on behalf of Jodi. Terry, who was unable to attend, reports she heard only good comments regarding the luncheon. mate from the Cow Palace. Santa Rosa is low cost, but Placerville is pretty close and has many amenities to entice us. Placerville would very much like us, has a favorable and attractive site, hotels are less expensive in that area, it boasts a good kitchen, and RV parking should be fine. With regard to our potential field trial and WC/X venue, Placerville Fairgrounds site is 2 hours and 20 minutes from Corning for our field trial and WC/X venue, 2 hours to the Oakdale grounds, and 1-1/2 hours to Denverton/Grizzly Island.
