NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB www.norcalgrc.org Golden Notes JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Lisa Newton 1675 Fallen Leaf Los Altos, CA 94024 From the President So much for a calm end to 2012 and start of 2013! Skyline KC and Del Valle have decided to drop the Thursday and Monday all-breed shows, and are proposing to make the breed specialties "in conjunction with" the Del Valle show. Details are still being defined, but we would keep our rings, grooming area, raffle, etc. Del Valle assumes all judges' contracts, ring fees, judges' hospitality, MB-F costs, etc. We would get $5 per dog, can still have our raffle, offer trophies, pay a little extra for larger rosettes. Major questions surround how obedience and rally will work. After some initial panic that I will admit to, the Board and 2013 Specialty committee people (Dee Dee Anderson and Toni Maita), are looking at all our options. We are also looking at how this might affect the 2016 National. VP Performance Terry Southard We will keep the membership informed! VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden Saturday we had a fantastic seminar by Dr Claudia Orlandi on the ABCs of Dog Breeding. Dr Orlandi is a fabulous, exciting speaker and I wish you all could have attended! If you have a chance another time, I recommend her seminar. VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan VOLUME 43, ISSUE I Hope to see you all at the Annual Awards Banquet next month. In this three-year, multi-institutional study, researchers are examining genetic traits that contribute to risk and progression of these cancers in Golden Retrievers. Comparison of DNA samples from affected and unaffected Golden Retrievers has identified several candidate regions associated with development of hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. DNA analysis in the corresponding tumor samples has revealed numerous genetic abnormalities and has shown that tumors can be separated into several molecular subtypes. Results identifying lymphoma subtypes based on molecular analysis have been accepted for publication. Once all data are collected and integrated, the research team will correlate how genetic mutations in Golden Retrievers influence risk factors for hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma and how these r isk factors influence biological behaviors of tumors. The longterm goals are to understand what causes hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma and to develop strategies to prevent and treat these cancers in Golden Retrievers and other breeds. Jaime F.
