NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB www.norcalgrc.org Golden Notes SPRING 2015 Elected Officers: President Suzanne Bria Secretary/Treasurer Tammy Ballew 281 Dry Creek Rd Hollister, CA 95023-5168 VP Performance Christine Hsu VP Breed Robin Baker VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Laura Finco Director Ken Blanchard Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan VOLUME 45, ISSUE II From the President: Suzanne Bria Is Longevity Our Priority? A friend new to Goldens recently asked me about the GRCA Code of Ethics, so when I sent her the link I decided to read it again – realizing I hadn't read it in years! I was very surprised to find only one brief mention of longevity in the entire COE, in the very last paragraph. The emphasis seems to be on health clearances and "quality of life." No one would deny that health and quality of life are tremendously important, but so is quantity of life, especially with the cancers plaguing our breed. In support of emphasizing longevity in our COE, I would also like to see something included about the importance of maintaining information in a database like k9data.com, especially Date of Death (DOD) and Cause of Death (COD). Surely if we can add our dogs to k9data (a resource we are exceptionally fortunate to have, thanks to Amy Raby) and include every clearance and title earned, we can also add this most vital information! Doing so should be the responsibility of breeders, stud dog owners, and all Golden owners alike for the future of the breed. I urge all NORCAL GRC members to Inside this issue: enter dogs they have owned or bred into this invaluable database. Take the From the President 1 time to do it NOW, before this vital information is lost forever! You will no doubt be admired for it. One Golden friend argues for temperament as our most important priority and WC/WCX Report that "we can't dismiss good-tempered dogs from our breeding stock just Performance Events because they developed cancer before the age of 10 years old." I agree with her. But ask any owner, especially pet owners who are in the majority, what is most vitally important to them – and I guarantee they will tell you a long life NORCAL Specialty for their dogs – followed by temperament and overall health. We need to do everything we can to extend the lives of our precious Goldens. How many of us have received those anguished phone calls or emails saying "we just lost our beloved Golden at 8" or some other far too early age? I don't think we can increase longevity unless we avoid doubling up on particular causes of death and lines of short-lived dogs, environmental factors notwithstanding. We must stop breeding (and too often line-breeding) dogs based on their winnability in our choose venue rather than on their longevity! In order to do this we need to make longevity a priority, keep good public records, and be open and honest in order to make the best possible breeding decisions. First and foremost we all have to ask ourselves – and answer honestly – what is our top priority? Do we have to accept 10 years as an average lifespan for our beloved Goldens? Many breeders and owners seem to figure if their dogs make it to double digits they are doing well. They were despair at the early deaths but wring their hands, figuring there is nothing to be done. I don't accept this! At best the lifespan of a dog is so much shorter than our own. I know there are no guarantees. But call me greedy: I want every day, every year possible with my beloved Goldens! -Suzanne Bria President; NORCAL Golden Retriever Club 2 3 3 Board Mtg Minutes 3 General Mtg Minutes 4 Member Brags 4 General Mtg Minutes 5 Board Mtg Con’t 6 Woofstock Takeover 7 National Specialty Update 8 Petra Seminar 8 GOLDEN NOTES Page 2 NorCal Golden Retriever WC/WCX Reports Host club NorCal Golden Retriever Club Date May 9, 2015 Location of test site, City and State CRTA Denverton, Fairfield, CA Submitted by Susan Osborn Stratton, [email protected], 408-425-9337 Photographer Susan Osborn Stratton WC Stake WC: 11 of starters, 10 of qualifiers*. Due to the amount of foxtails and the mowing schedule of CRTA, it is proposed that we change the event to an earlier date next year, near the end of April. We will raiser. We need to find out if Tammy Ballew will also be soliciting items for the field raffle and store them as well until the event. We will need individuals selling tickets specifically for the field raffle. Lynn Williams volunteered to help sell tickets for this raffle. Debbie mentioned she will welcome suggestions for judges for both the Field Trial and the WC/WCX. It was noted that the Field Trial event conflicts with Obedience events but such cannot be avoided due to the timing with the beginning of the hunting season and availability of gunners, etc. immediately after our National event. Absent: Christine Hsu, Scott Woodland. President’s Report: It is possible we will not hold our CCA this year, due to venue change. We will have a “double” CCA next year at our National. Grooming day is still a possibility as a fundraiser for the National, currently an idea in progress. Secretary Report: Roster has been updated with the AKC. For unknown reason, our current information has been lost several times by the AKC, prohibiting event applications from our club being timely processed. We are trying to correct the problem with our AKC events representative. Treasurer Report: Checking account currently stands at $30,334. Top income of the year received from field events, $2,088. Fun match raised $1,086. Specialty raised $1,059. Agility raised $1,052. CCA was negative $336 this year (unusual, we flew in judges). VP Performance Report: No news regarding the Beat the Heat match. With regard to agility, the increased number of trials overall has reduced the potential for income with this venue. VP Field Report: Debbie Tandoc reports for Scott: Our hunt test is upcoming March 21/22. Flyer day will be March 29, pheasant flyer day April 26, and WC/WCX May 9th. All dates are listed on our website, and all are located at the Denverton CRTA property. Julie Cairns and Debbie Tandoc will co‐chair the 2016 National field trial. Debbie recommends that Bruce, who takes care of our equipment upkeep, be nominated and receive a VP award next year. VP Conformation Report: Robin Baker reports the flyer has been distributed for Woofstock. Our entry is supported by our current/ outgoing board members, thank you very much to them for doing so. Our specialty this year will be both an independent specialty day on Thursday and a designated specialty day on Friday. The designated specialty is working with the all breed club, but it will have the same appearance. Jennifer Masterson has graciously agreed to chair both days of this event. Please reach out and volunteer to support our club event!!! Regarding the 2016 National Specialty: A handout is given at this luncheon which lists the schedule and chairpersons in place, as well as those needed, and call for volunteers. Robin Baker will be the official liaison between the board, general membership, and national committee. Eileen will remain as committee chair. Eileen Oshiro reports that Linda Gomoll and Robin Baker will be working on fundraising. Mary Ann Graziano and Eileen will hold a garage sale on May 16 with proceeds going to National. We will do publicity at the 2015 National in Ohio to promote the next one. Gina King will be our Parade of Titleholders chair. Tammy Ballew will create and produce the banner. Dimity Mueller will be contacting members to generate more volunteers for specific needs. We still need a tailgate party chair (tailgate party has replaced the prior more formal “banquet evening”). Breakfasts will be hosted by various GR clubs. Discussion held regarding how best to update the membership with regard to the National. Suggestions are to use a members section on our website, create a blog, send blasts via email using the subject line of “2016 National Information and Update.” Please use this reference as well if you are sending an email to any chairpersons or volunteers regarding the National event. New Members: Please welcome John Maher and Jane Ferguson. Meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m. upon motion made by Ember Kitchener and seconded by Pam Stennes. (Raffle emceed by Pam McDonald followed.) Respectfully submitted, Lisa Newton Secretary Norcal Golden Retriever Club VOLUME 45, ISSUE II Page 6 From page 3 Vice President, Performance Report: Christine Hsu reports, regarding fun match: Still searching locations. Possibilities in San Ramon, Palo Alto, Cal State Hayward. No new information as yet. It is getting a little late in the year so concern regarding whether we can hold this event. Any location needs to be relatively convenient to move our trailer there. Location in Palo Alto would be Cubberly. Dates are in August, we are currently checking dates and have flexibility. Vice President, Field Report: Debbie Tandoc reports upcoming event dates as listed above. Hunt test in another week. This year we changed it up, one master and a double junior/ senior. We are trying to benefit the local folks this year when it is not a master national year. Denverton is making improvements and in transition at the moment, taken into consideration the grounds available for use. Flyer day is after hunt test this year due to CRTA rule changes, etc. Grounds cost is minimized this way and more availability for attendees, etc. Good timing for those gearing up and preparing for WC/X. Picnic trials are on standby due to personal circumstances of chair. Comment from Pam re: judging – can we inquire of membership regarding which judges we choose? Don’t miss out on this fabulous seminar – and a chance to be part of a terrific fundraiser for the GRCA 2016 National - sponsored by NORCAL GRC. If you do any kind of performance activity with your dog, here's an excellent opportunity to learn how to get the most out of your canine partner as well as to prevent injuries. Petra Ford -- who has campaigned dogs at the highest levels in Obedience, Field and Agility -- is a renowned expert in canine physical and rehabilitation therapy. She operates Aqua Dog Rehabilitation in New Jersey http://aquadogrehab.com-- and luckily for us, she will be making a rare visit to California to present two hands-on seminars this coming November. Working and auditing spots will fill up fast. If you're interested in developing tools to develop your own personalized conditioning program for your dog, make sure you email Patti Kostakis at [email protected] to get priority registration. The skills you'll learn can be used to improve your dogs' fitness -- in every sport you enjoy with them, including conformation. Here is a quote from one of Petra’s clients (Andrae Accera): “With Petra’s conditioning program, my dog’s speed in agility has increased by 2 yards per second and she can turn on a dime. I can honestly say that you are going to LOVE the seminars and have a great time. Petra has done so much to help maximize my dog’s condition for agility, obedience and general health and well-being.” Petra knows what it takes to be a winner. She's earned titles at both the national and international level (including the prestigious Crufts show in England). Don't miss this opportunity to learn from the best.
