Have you paid too much tax? Local company DNG Kevin Condon and taxback.ie. operate a successful taxback service, and have this week claimed over 4,000 in overpaid tax for one couple whose tax credits were not properly distributed, among other equally lucrative cases. One partner had commenced working part time and had kept her full allowance, while the other continued to pay tax at 41% on income over 32,800. They sorted this issue out and going forward the couple will be better off by 157.50 per month, not to mention a rebate over 4,000 which they will receive in the next week. Phone 087 2330398 Muskerry News with Brian Gabriel, Blarney and District Historical Society The Saint Cecilia Stained Glass Window he very beautiful and highly illuminated stained glass windows which make up the display above the organ and choir gallery in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Blarney, depict, appropriately, the martyred Saint Cecilia - Patron Saint of Church Music. The main display is made up of five interconnecting circles, the centre one of which displays St. Cecilia holding an organ in her left hand. The four outer circles each show an angel with a musical instrument, a lute, cymbals, triangle and an organ. They are depicted, surrounded by an entwined vine with hanging bunches of grapes. Saint Cecilia’s right hand is raised and there something akin to an ecstatic look on her face as she listens to the surrounding angels singing and playing. There are then four smaller, separate, circular windows again showing vines and grapes. Cecilia, according to Church legend, was of noble birth and dedicated her life to God with a vow of chastity from a young age. Her name is Latin meaning ‘blind’ or ‘sixth’ and is the feminine form of Cecil. She was to be married to a young nobleman named Valerian but on the wedding day “as the musicians played, she sang in her heart to God only (“cantantibus organis illa in corde suo soi domino decantabat”): possibly the cantantibus organis was erroneously interpreted of Cecilia as an organist. In this way the saint was brought into closer relation with music.” She was made patroness of The Academy of Music at Rome when it was founded in 1584. It is only from the late 15th century that she is associated with music when artists began painting her singing or playing the organ, often surrounded by cherubim. She was then also declared Patron Saint of church music. Prior to this period she was never depicted or associated with music but was often portrayed with a palm and gospel in her hands or without any emblem at all. She is also a patron saint of Poets She was martyred for her beliefs and for refusing to worship Roman gods. She was first placed in a burning bath (caldarium) in her own house to be suffocated by steam but when this did not work a soldier was ordered to behead her. This also failed because after three strokes of the axe her head was not fully severed. By law at the time only three strokes could be administered so she was left to die which occurred after three days of agony. She was originally entombed in the Cemetery of Callistus before being exhumed, incorrupt, in the early 9th century and placed in a T church, built by Pope Paschal, over the ruins of her home. This cemetery was the burial place of some of the early popes and is reputed to have held 500,000 tombs in its time. It is probably the most important historical cemetery in Rome. Cecilia’s body, witnessed by a number of people including a sculptor, was exhumed during restoration of the church in 1599, and was still found to be incorrupt, complete with the axe-cuts. The sculptor made a statue of Cecilia depicting her as he saw her when she was found. Her relics still lie in the Basilica Church of St. Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome. Many famous composers have written music commemorating the saint, with the following three being some of the more notable. George Friderick Handel composed the music for ‘Ode to St. Cecilia’s Day’ in 1736. Henry Purcell composed ‘Hail! Bright St. Cecilia,’ in 1692. Benjamin Britten composed ‘Hymn to St. Cecilia, Op. 27’ in 1942. The first record of music being played in her honour is at Evreux in Normandy in1570. There are five masses written in her honour. Her Feast Day is celebrated on 22nd November. Please Note: The Blarney & District Historical Society will present an illustrated lecture titled: ‘The History of the Church of Ireland in Blarney’ on Friday 17th May at 8.00 pm in the Church of the Resurrection, Blarney. Picture: Gerard Bonus Email: [email protected] The children, parents and staff of Scoil Chroí Íosa would like to acknowledge the significant contributions Sir Charles Colthurst of Blarney Castle has recently made to our school environment. We are lucky enough to have beautiful native woodland surrounding our senior building, this newly opened outdoor classroom allows the children to learn in a woodland setting and to engage fully with the beauty and wonder of this habitat. Sir Charles has also donated hundreds of native plants to create a lovely hedgerow along the fence between our junior building and Castle Close. These have now been planted and will form a fabulous resource for the children to learn about butterflies, insects and worms as well as the plants themselves. Two gardeners from the Castle have very kindly visited the junior school grounds with Mr. Hurley and Mr. Kelly to share their expertise and offer advice. Finally, Sir Charles has donated a poly tunnel to the school, which will be put in place shortly. We are very excited about this, and look forward to cultivating delicious, nutritious crops with the children of Scoil Chroí Íosa for many years to come. Page 11 Summer Space academy beckons! Under the guidance of their teachers Mr. Barry Condron and Mrs. Maura O' Connor, the junior pupils have been involved in learning about scientific matters and mathematics in a whole new way. They have been awarded the Discover Primary Maths and Science Award for their excellence. The teachers and pupils have put an enormous amount of work into discovering and thinking about science activities. A whole lot of fun was had exploring how important science and maths is in everyday life. Discover Primary Science and Maths (DPSM) is the national programme to foster interest in science, technology engineering and maths among children in primary schools. Participating schools carry out a range of science and maths activities in the classroom and are also encouraged to undertake additional explorative activities and projects. An Award of Science and Maths Excellence is available to schools that go beyond basic participation and carry out a minimum requirement of additional explorative activities. St. Lachteen's are thrilled their hard work has gained such recognition and look forward to their award being presented. Also the entire school are celebrating the success of being awarded a second Green Flag as part of the Green Schools Project. Pupils will attend an awards ceremony this month and the second Green Flag will be officially raised at St. Lachteen's on Friday the 7th June. Finally, our second class students will receive their First Holy Communion on May 11th and they look forward to the celebrations that come with such an occasion. They have been busy preparing for this special day in their lives along with the help of their teacher Mrs. Susan O' Hanlon. The smells wafting through the windows to give the house a fresh fragrance! To plant a hanging basket, I suggest you use John Innes Multi-purpose compost, slow release feeding and quality Irish-grown flowers. Our passionate experts will whip you up a gloriously bright and colourful hanging basket in no time, ready to be hung and give your house that bright, summery glow! Order yours in advance and we'll have it ready for you. We have so many colour plants to choose from, but some of my favourite hanging baskets have been filled with the following: Trailing geraniums, nepeta, verbena, diascias, busy lizzies, bacopa and begonias. For exceptionally scented hanging baskets try some surfinia blue vein – simply wonderful! Varieties that do really well in sunny positions include Jamaica Primrose, Geraniums, Dianthus, Surfinias, Pansies, Osteospermum and Argyranthemum For shaded positions, here are some suggestions: Busy Lizzies, Begonias, Fuchsias, Diascias Did you know that 80% of the plants that we sell at Griffins Garden Centre are grown right here in our state of the art nursery? How many other garden centres can say that! Our plants are of the highest quality and are acclimatised to the southern Irish climate from day one, meaning you won't find better plants for your garden anywhere else! It's no wonder then that Griffin's is still Cork's only five star garden centre. The Spinning Wheel Restaurant at Grififns Garden Centre was recently recommended by Georgina Campbell and Taste of Ireland among others. The Spinning Wheel Restaurant is renowned for gourmet food at great prices, traditional and elegant afternoon tea and of course the stunning views of a river valley and serene atmosphere! Page 18 Phone 087 2330398 Muskerry News The vast majority of homeowners in those Ballincollig housing estates that were exempt from the €100 Household Charge last year will now be liable to pay the Local Property Tax. The announcement that all homeowners living in unfinished estates would not now be exempt from the tax on family homes was made recently by the Government. Speaking after the Government announcement local Sinn Féin representative Des O Grady said “It was only after maps were published on the County Council website that the full extent of the additional households now liable for the Local Property Tax became apparent. Very few houses in unfinished estates in Ballincollig are now exempt. For example in the Old Quarter all homeowners in Waltham Abbey and Leslies Arch are now liable as are those in Millers Court and Coopers Grange with only a few houses in the area cut off by the security barriers in the latter two being exempt. In Fionn Laoi only 3 houses out of the 30 completed houses outside the safety barriers are now exempt and in Lisheen Fields all homeowners of houses situated outside the barriers are liable. In the Quadrants only apartments in the block directly across from the Medical Centre consisting of unoccupied units are now exempt with homeowners in all other blocks being liable. This makes a nonsense of the government promise that people living in unfinished estates would be exempt from this unfair and regressive tax. The simple fact remains, these estates are still not the places they were planned to be and that were promised to the residents who moved into them. Residents are now in the situation where the Council refuses to service their estate or fix basic faults such as public lighting and yet at the same time they are being asked to pay property taxes to provide for local services. Sinn Féin believes a wealth tax should be introduced instead of a tax on family homes and we remain committed to introducing legislation in the Dáil to repeal this unfair tax at the earliest opportunity.” Eamonn Ryan, guest speaker at the CIT Sports Awards, making a presentation to Ciarain Sheehan, Ovens, in recognition of his contribution to the College's Gaelic Football and Hurling teams, both on and off the pitch. It’s been pretty damp and dreary overall but on the positive side the overnight temperatures have started to creep up and this has spurred things into growth. We have just begun sowing our new wildflower areas around the estate. The seed we are using is all of local origin, and is wild collected. This will add significantly to the biodiversity of the grounds and gardens. It will provide food and shelter for numerous species of insects, birds and larger animals and should also look great when they all come into flower. There have been a lot of ‘housekeeping’ jobs to do this month, including mulching beds, edging lawns, pruning and tidying shrubs and when possible a little bit of weed killing on the hard surfaces. I find if you get on top of things early, it makes it a lot easier later. Jobs for the next few weeks: Plant indoor tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers if you haven’t already, tie in and pinch out growth on the grape vine, thin indoor peaches to ensure a good quality crop, sow herbs in six packs and then plant out when they reach a manageable size, this also works well for lettuce. Watch out for slug damage and check for greenfly both indoors and out. A good tip for dealing with greenfly is mix some washing up liquid and water in a jug to make a lot of foam, then apply this foam directly to the infested areas to completely cover the aphids. It works very well! Beer traps can be a good way of dealing with slugs, but personally I can never spare the beer! I still use slug pellets, but I put them in other areas of the garden well away from the vegetables. The blustery weather saw a few smaller trees down around the estate and these have been put to good use making rustic benches. You can find them in various areas including the fern garden and riverbank walk. We recently donated a new polytunnel to the local school in Blarney (Scoil Chroí Íosa) and I hope this helps to introduce a new generation to horticulture. There is a huge learning potential in gardening, from the basics of seed sowing and growing your own vegetables, right through to advanced biology and chemistry of being able to ‘micropropogate’ cuttings in test tubes. The new jungle border is starting to come together, but there’s still a long way to go yet. We recently took a stand at Fota Plant Fair to advertise the gardens and also this years Blarney in Bloom (13th July) and while there picked up quite a few rare and interesting plants. Speaking of Blarney in Bloom, it’s shaping up well. There will be a lot of additional features this year, with a programme of gardening talks from expert speakers, the birds of prey returning, interactive arts and crafts displays, specialist plant nurseries, live music and children’s entertainment. It is all in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Anyone wishing to take part please drop me a line at: [email protected] I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. These wild places include a range of different habitats and are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, some of which are rare either locally or across Europe. For example, our sea cliffs are home to the chough, a member of the crow family with distinctive bright red beak and legs. While the chough is quire common along some areas of our coastline, it is virtually extinct in England and on the decline in many other regions. Therefore, it is important that our populations are maintained in good health. Similarly, Ireland is home to a large proportion of the world population of freshwater pearl mussels as well as the famous Kerry slug. This slug is only found in SW Ireland (Cork and Kerry) and northern Spain and Portugal. Unfortunately, the southern European populations are severely threatened making preservation of the Irish populations all the more important. Vulnerable species, such as the chough, pearl mussel and Kerry slug, and their habitats are protected under EU laws. Across Europe, areas have to be set aside for the protection and future security of these and other rare animals and plants. County Cork has a number of these Special Protection Areas (SPA) and Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) which, when combined with similar sites across the rest of Europe, form the Natura 2000 network of protected sites with conservation interest. A consequence of the establishment of these protected areas is the local restriction of some activities, including building and development in or near an SPA or SAC. These activities are not forbidden, but they do require an extra level of ecological assessment as part of the planning procedure. Therefore, if you are considering any building activity in or near a protected site, it is essential to use a professional ecologist to assist with the completion of the necessary environmental documentation. Pat told the children that if they could fundraise approximately €250 that this would provide a new classroom with all the essential requirements to provide an education for more than 50 children in India. Therefore the big hearted students organised a clothes collection in Waterloo at the start of this year. Local people wholeheartedly supported their efforts and a total of €292 was raised which has resulted in a new classroom being created from the proceeds. The last part of their fabulous project involved recycling old and new buttons. When you buy a new item of clothing a spare button is attached inside which is usually kept intending to be used but is normally thrown away. The Hope Foundation were contacted and loved the idea of collecting all the buttons which are now being sent to the tailoring schools which they run for street children in Calcutta, thus providing them with a skill to earn an income. The result of the students wonderful altrusic efforts are that the school has qualified for the All Ireland Final of The Eco Unesco environmental award in the Mansion House on May 22nd. We wish them luck, they are an inspiration. You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss today, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart disease and strokes, pregnancy problems such as low birth weight, diabetes and respiratory disease? It may be more serious than you think. Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and flossing. Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the gums. Every smoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected worse than others. You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced. Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to loosen. What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly and gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdental toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It could save your teeth and improve your health! Local company, Cards Complete is a one stop personalised card writing service that allows the sender to go online and in a few easy steps, choose their card and add their message. Then they sit back, knowing that it will be delivered promptly to their loved ones, with their message beautifully handwritten by Antoinette O’Brien, the brains behind the company. The Muskerry News caught up with Antoinette who on 1st May, 2013, celebrates her first year in business. “The day the site eventually went live was an extraordinary experience,” Antoinette told us, “I had spent so long working on the site with the web designer and then suddenly our finished product Cards Complete was there for the whole world to see. It was scary and exciting all at the same time. I felt that I had been talking to my friends for so long about it and suddenly they could see exactly what I had been working on all that time. Late that evening, I was working away in my office when my email pinged. There in front of me was my very first order! I was so excited that in the rush to tell my family I almost knee capped myself on the desk. I ran into the sitting room singing ‘I FINANCIAL PROBLEMS..... STRESS..... LAWSUITS..... NO HOPE? got an order, I got an order’and then I did a little dance. And every order I get since, I have done a ‘quieter’ version of that first dance, because the way I see it, every order, large or small, keeps me in business and proves there is a market for handwritten cards. I have the pleasure of writing cards for every occasion, newborn to retirement and every celebration in between. From your armchair you can browse our extensive selection of cards knowing that we treat your loved ones and friends as if they are our own. Our card prices including delivery, match and usually beat the cost of buying one from a shop. For just 2 extra, we can also send a framed photograph in our cards. All you have to do is upload your chosen photograph from your camera and send it to us with your order. This has to be our most popular offering at present. We also offer to organise all your cards for the year and many of our customers email us their calendar of events in one go, and trust us to get their cards (including the dreaded Christmas cards) to their recipients on time. I have also since progressed to gifts, and worked hard on the gift selection to ensure that what I offered on the site was genuine Irish product. I went to markets and craft fairs and could see that really talented people were creating beautiful crafts, but did not have an online presence, and now we are working together! I am constantly adding new products to my site. That is down to word of mouth referrals from other makers who are happy with my service, and the fact that Cards Complete is pushing its way up the rankings on Google and other search engines and is making its presence felt! The people I have met on my journey have been unbelievable. They have given me free advice based on their own business experience and I genuinely appreciate their kindness as I realise that time is precious when you run your own business. I joined Blarney Chamber of Commerce and have to say that the networking opportunities and business leads I have gleaned from their Friday morning meetings have been significant. I would recommend our local Antoinette O’Brien Chamber to anyone who is in business in the parish of Blarney. We all need to support each other especially at times like these. For me, the excitement of an order and the thrill of adding each new Irish product to my site is wonderful, but most of all it is the good will and genuine wishes for success from people that have meant the most. I really love what I do every day, and it makes me dance! Can I say any better than that? To celebrate Cards Completes’ 1st Birthday, they are offering free delivery of any GIFT to anywhere in Ireland until May 17th. Diabetes type 2, elevated blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are symptoms resulting from imbalances between our diet, lifestyle, stress, environmental toxins and our genes. Signs and Symptoms include frequent trips to the bathroom, unquenchable thirst, unexplained weight loss, tiredness and fatigue, excessive hunger, increasing belly fat, sugar cravings, blood sugar swings, low sex drive, low hdl, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, blurred vision, frequent cuts and bruises, slow healing, numbness in hands and feet and itchy skin. If you have a family history of obesity, diabetes or heart disease you are even more prone to this problem. However by treating the causes and not just the risk factors, by treating the whole system and not just the symptoms, by creating health and not just treating disease, by using the Functional Medicine model and preventing illness the whole body can be kept in balance and therefore healthy. You can create health by removing the obstacles that are stopping you such as poor diet, stress, lack of exercise, allergies and others. You can create health by including fresh healthy food, nutrients, sleep, relaxation and much more. YOU can help your health. If you notice any of the above signs, schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you if you have reason to be concerned about a diagnosis of diabetes. Principal, Mr. John Ring, echoed these sentiments and noted that there was a great sense of community present on the evening with Ann Humphries, Principal of the Primary School, members of Board of Management, all the teachers, recipient students and past pupils present to acknowledge endeavour and commitment of the students. He said that this year’s students had excelled in state examinations, achieving results well above the national average. He also advised that the school evaluation process, by a number of Department of Education inspectors, had taken place and that all involved, students, teachers and supportive parents could all take pride in the findings of the report. Awards were presented to pupils for their success in academic areas based on their work and results during the school year. First off was the launch of their first published book, “We are Writers” which is a 360 page tome of poetry, prose, fact and fiction compiled by the students and published in association with Scholastic. The school hall (Halla Ui Chearuil) was packed with pupils, parents and invited guests who heard a selection of the proud young authors read their literacy masterpieces. Eddie Linehan, author and storyteller of national fame was also in attendance and he enthralled the audience with stories of fairy feuds and forts. The book is available through the school and is the 'must read' book for 2013. Next up was a workshop by fifth and sixth class pupils for parents and teachers in SCRATCH programming. The school has taught the programme since September 2012 with the children opting to stay back for an extra hour a week and on many rainy lunchtimes and have now become adept animators, graphic artists, hip hop choreographers, electronic musicians, quiz masters and have honed Third class pupil, Deirdre Foley, making a presentation to Ms. Liz Horgan who was instrumental in the production of the "We are Writers" book at Berring's National School.. Imagine for a moment that its 6 months from today… You’re enjoying what you love to do…playing golf, playing with the kids, or maybe just lying on a beach somewhere. You’re free of the pain and health issues that were holding you back. You have more energy, better health, and absolutely no pain. Does this sound too good to be true -- to live pain free, like you were in your younger years? In a minute, I’ll tell you how you can make this a reality. But first you should know a little about me. My name is Dr. Eric Kelly and I chose to start my practice in Glanmire Co Cork because I love the town. I’ve used gentle chiropractic treatments to help thousands in our community feel better and live healthier, more productive lives. “Does Chiropractic Really Work?” Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years, and has been used to help everyone from tiny babies to the elderly. Even top sports star and entertainers…like Tiger Woods, Emmitt Smith, Tony Robbins, Joe Montana, Padraig Harrington, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. In fact, the U.S. government is so convinced chiropractic works they’ve been paying for it through the Medicare system for 30 years. In addition to that, here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic… “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.”– British Medical Journal “Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems” said study leader George Bakris, MD, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center. “How Much Does Chiropractic Cost?” It’s impossible to know for sure what you’ll need to get rid of your nagging health problem until I’ve examined you. That’s why for 10 days only, €30 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients €265 for! What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” -- Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery Although chiropractic works great for back pain, at our office we’ve helped patients with a wide range of problems. “Isn’t Chiropractic Just For Back Pain?” We can help conditions like… • Headaches and Migraines • Asthma and Allergies • Numbness in the Arms and Legs • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Athletic Injuries • Car Accidents • Shoulder, Hip And Knee Pain • And much more There’s an endless list of health problems chiropractic can help with. For example, here’s what a recent study on chiropractic and high blood pressure found… “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood pressure medications given in combination… “Here is what one of our patients say” I have suffered on and off with back pain for 50 years. I have also had constant pain in my leg and my feet for a lot of years. I love to go out on the golf course twice a week. Swinging the golf club sent sharp darts of pain right through my lower back, and it was always tight. I was in almost constant pain. I eventually made the decision to see a Chiropractor to see if anything could be done. I wasn’t expecting miracles, but hoped at best that I would get improvement and be able to manage my pain and be able to enjoy sport. So, I saw Dr. Eric Kelly in Glanmire Chiropractic Clinic in April 2011. I was diagnosed with having mechanical joint dysfunction, and it turned out that I have one leg anatomically shorter than the other. I was never told this. Dr. Kelly talked me through how he would be able to help me with both issues, and he dealt with the back pain initially, letting me know in lay terms how he would be able to relieve the pain, and eventually eliminate it by adjusting my lumbo-pelvic and lower limb regions. I was quite nervous at fi rst, but found the adjustments to be absolutely fi ne.I genuinely started to feel better within 2 to 3 weeks of regular chiropractic visits, and I can honestly say that by the end of my treatment I felt like a new man. Since seeing Dr. Kelly, I have lived with little or no pain, something I didn’t realise I could do. Chiropractic isn’t something I knew a lot about before I became a patient, but I now genuinely believe in its benefi ts. There’s nothing to be nervous of, it’s incredible that I have lived most of my life with pain, and learned to manage it when I could have had Dr. Kell yhelp me a long time ago. - JOHN O’CALLAGHAN Take a look at what you will receive: • An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen…really listen. • A complete nerve, muscle and spinal exam to find the “cause” of your problem. • A full set of specialised x-rays to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration… (NOTE: These would cost up to €195 usually). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health. You’ve got enough people trying to waste your time with risky treatments that you don’t really want or might not need. I’m not one of those people. What I’m offering here is something quite different. I encourage you to call today and start living a healthier, more joyful life. P.P.S. Why Suffer With Years Of Misery? The big myth about health problems is “maybe it will just go away on its own.” A 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that most back pain sufferers who do nothing will have pain 12 months later. That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem. “Don’t Let Pain Keep You and your family from experiencing a full life”
