Quish’s SuperValu in Ballincollig is in line to win the top prize at this
year’s National Q Mark Awards.
Quish’s SuperValu employs a talented workforce of 115 people from
specialist Butchers, Bakers and Chefs, to Shop Floor, Fresh Food and
Checkout team members. The store plays a huge role in the local
community and is the main sponsor for both Ballincollig Rugby and
Dripsey GAA club, as well as many more.
Sean Quish, Managing Director said, “This nomination is a great
honour for us at Quish’s SuperValu Ballincollig and great recognition of
the hard work put in by all our team at our store. We are always striving
for excellence in all areas of our business and have been chasing this
National Q Mark award for some time. Fresh foods are at the heart of our
business and food safety, hygiene and quality are crucial in delivering the
highest standards in fresh food.”
The nomination for Quish’s SuperValu is a great news story of how a
local business can actually set the standards for the rest of the country, and
we wish them well for the final in Dublin on September 27th.

The October edition of The Muskerry News, incorporating North City
News, will be published on Friday October 11th
and closing date for submissions is Friday October 4th.
Blarney puts political parties on notice
An increasing number of towns throughout Ireland, have introduced a
‘No Poster Policy’ during elections.
This has been generally been observed by all the political parties, when
introduced. Blarney Tidy Towns had this in mind when they wrote to all of
the main parties last year, and they are asking all concerned to refrain from
this practice, for many reasons.
The posters are largely unsightly, they are expensive, and it's doubtful if
they serve any purpose in persuading the electorate to vote one way or the
other. Despite the fact that the erection and removal of these posters, are
controlled by law, they are a still a source of litter in towns and villages,
due to the fact that not all posters are removed, and invariably the ties
used, are either strewn around or are still to be seen on poles.
Speaking to The Muskerry News, Tom MacGrath Chairman Blarney
Tidy Towns said, “I am therefore requesting all parties to observe our
‘Blarney Poster Free Town’ policy and keep them well outside the town.
We look forward to your cooperation in this matter, and would like to have
your commitment made known to us. We will publicly acknowledge this,
and thanks to those who have already supported us in the past.”
Damian Boylan, Chairman, Blarney Chamber of Commerce added,
“Blarney Chamber of Commerce are in total support of this initiative. I
don't believe that a poster ever helped anyone make up their mind in
any democratic action. Posters are an eyesore and a waste of public
money. “
Chairman of Blarney Community Council, Eoin McCarthy, also spoke
firmly in agreement saying, “Blarney Community Council are fully in
favour of supporting this Tidy Towns initiative to help keep political
posters out of Blarney.”

Cork Kiln Dried Timber
Fancy exploring the meaning of life?
In Ireland today many feel that Christianity is boring, irrelevant and untrue
and so ignore it, and move on from 'religion.' At the same time there is an
absence of meaning, values that matter and an emptiness that pervades life.
The Alpha course is a relaxed, informal opportunity for adults to think and
talk about faith, where the craic is good and no question is out of bounds!
It is for everyone who wants to challenge or deepen their experience of the
Christian faith.
An Alpha course is commencing on Wednesday October 2nd 2013 at 8pm,
for 10 weeks in The Parish Centre, Church Hill, Carrigrohane.
If you’d like more information please contact Dean Venables on 4877260.

Collard (Future Forest) speaking of ‘Bringing Nature into the Garden’ at
the Community Hall, Whitechurch, on Thursday 26th September at 8pm.
All very welcome.
Why choose kiln dried timber this Winter?
Guaranteed to Burn. Moisture levels do not exceed 20%, much lower
than air dried wood. Burning process easier to get started,
maintain and longer lasting.
Energy Efficient. Stronger fires with less wood. 35% more heat as
opposed to air dried woos.
Cleaner Burning. Minimum residue on flue, glass fronted stoves
and inset fires. Unclogged chimney.s Less Maintenance.
Cleaner Handling & Storage. Kiln dried process kills bugs, mould and
spores, greatly reducing storage problems. Healthier for the environment.
Carbon Neutral. No carbon tax.

News from Times Past
with Brian Gabriel, Blarney & District Historical Society
A Short History of Blarney Sports & Sportsmen 1885-1985
Athletics and hurling are as old as civilization itself when people had to run
and jump to escape predators. They later learned to use sticks as spears and
stones to kill animals for food. This led to competition to find out who was best
at running, jumping and throwing. We learned in school of the exploits of the
Fianna, Cuchulainn and many others in hurling, lifting, jumping and throwing
various implements.
Ireland’s sporting events died out during the Great Potato Famine when
nearly half of its population either emigrated or starved. They then gradually
started to organize again around the 1860s and 1870s. The new games were
British in nature, such as cricket, polo, horse racing, etc., with hurling starting
to become a form of hockey. The traditional Irish sports of lifting, running and
throwing were being bypassed in favour of ‘Gentlemens’ sports etc., aimed at
civil servants, lawyers, Trinity College students, etc., with attractive prize
money being offered, while side-betting took place on a large scale. In 1884,
the Caledonian Games were held in Dublin and attracted a crowd of 20,000 to
Lansdowne Road. This event gave considerable impetus to those who wanted
to start an All-Ireland body to cater for traditional Irish sports like athletics,
hurling and Gaelic football.
The Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in November 1884 by a group
of men led by Michael Cusack and others, including John McKay of The Cork
Examiner. The aim of the G.A.A. was ‘to preserve and cultivate national
pastimes and to promote every form of Athletics peculiarly Irish and to remove
with one sweep everything foreign in the present system’.
Blarney Hurling and Football Club was one of the first in Ireland to join the
new association. The first full-scale athletics meeting in southern Ireland was
held in the village square on May Sunday 1885, when the G.A.A. was just six
months old. The first modern Olympic Games was 11 years in the future, Karl
Benz had just invented the motor car, Queen Victoria would be on the throne of
England for another 16 years, Parnell had just introduced his Home Rule Bill
in Parliament, James Connolly and Padraig Pearse were six years old and
Eamonn de Valera was just three. English League football was 3 years away,
the Boer War was fourteen years in the future and Coca-Cola was invented. In
that year, when so many events, which would prove historical to later
generations, were taking place, the young Gaelic Athletic Association held the
first Blarney Sports. The people who organized this event were not to know
that it would continue with very few interruptions, for one hundred years. That
first ‘sports’ was to suffer from a malady, which was to haunt it in future years;

RAIN! “It will rain on Sunday because it’s Blarney Sports Day” was the ‘logic’
of local wags on many occasions since then.
The Cork Examiner of Monday 4th May 1885 describes the event in great
detail and the official time-keeper was John McKay of The Cork Examiner,
one of the founders of the G.A.A.
Now, picture the scene: 5,000 spectators around a central track of just 200
yards in the village square. The first Blarney Sports was organized jointly by
the Blarney Amateur Athletic Club and Blarney Gaelic Athletic Association
Club. The organizing committee was: J. Campbell, H. Cunningham, E. Cotter,
Wm. Cronin, D. Hallissey, P. Hayes, J. O’Callaghan, J. Kelleher, J. Hayes, J.
Coleman, D. Barrow, E. Walsh, E. O’Reilly, M. Buckley, G. Hayes, J.
Corkeran, P. Sheehan, T. Coleman, J. Wiseman, J. O’Sullivan, D. O’Shea, and
M. Aherne. Handicapper and starter: V.F. Crowley. Judge: N.F. Murphy.
Timekeeper: J. McKay. Hon. Sec: C. Buckley.
he Cork Examiner reported the event as follows:
“The first meeting held in the south of Ireland under the Gaelic Athletic
Association of Ireland – in other words , the National Association – was held
yesterday on ‘ The Green’ in Blarney Village and a better start could not have
been had for the new Association.
The morning was showery but at noon the sun burst forth in all its
effulgence and the afternoon was simply delightful. Fully five thousand
spectators were present and not a drunken or disorderly person was to be seen
in the crowd, while there was not the least trouble experienced by the stewards
to keep the ring clear.
A number of police were drafted into the Village, but their services were not
required, as the people present at this, as well as every other national gathering
were able to keep the peace themselves. The Committee are deserving of every
credit for the satisfactory way the meeting passed off, while the arrangements
made were of the most complete character, so good in fact, that they would put
in the shade, those made for some of the best events in the country.
Where all worked so well it might be a little invidious to particularize, we feel
sure that no one will cavil with us for selecting for special praise the exertions
of the indefatigable Hon. Sec. Mr. C. Buckley and Mr. Cotter, a member of
Committee.
In the centre of the field was a tall pole, bearing on it a white flag, bordered
with green, and in the centre bore the letters G.A.A. done in green, and green
banners marked the distances in the 200 yard track. All the officials wore green
rosettes ornamented with white lace in the centre, so that all the appendages
were nationalistic in tone, and to crown all, the Barrack Street Band was in
attendance and discoursed the following choice of programme: March,
‘Precioso’ Quadrille, ‘Royal Irish’ selection, ‘Maritana’ with Calypso, Irish
Airs, Polkas, ‘Kathleen’ and others with God Save Ireland’ as a finale. The
playing of the band was much admired.
A large number of ladies were present and they seemed to enjoy the sports as
much as members of the sterner sex did. On the whole, the Gaelic Athletic
Association has made a good start in the South of Ireland and there cannot be
the slightest doubt of its success. The real people will support no other
association and when this is the case, combined with the fact that we have so
many fine athletes ranged under its banner – and will soon have many more –
it would be a daring man who would predict failure for it. Some of those who
have gone over to the enemy camp must have got their eyes opened in Blarney
yesterday. They will get further eye-openers in this direction.
The Cork Examiner gave full details of all the events, including heats and
handicaps as well as all the distances and heights in the jumping and throwing
events. The prizes were distributed by Miss Corkeran. The band played ‘God
Save Ireland’ as a finale and many of the people present joined in the singing
of it.
The above item is taken from a much larger article written by Mr. Paddy
Hickey, Honourary President of Blarney/Inniscarra Athletic Club and
published in Issue No. 8 of the Old Blarney Journal 2012.
The first lecture of the 2013/14 season takes place in Scoil Mhuire Gan
Smal (Blarney Secondary School) on Thursday 10th October at 8pm.
It commemorates the centenary of the death of the famous author and
priest, Canon Patrick Sheehan of Doneraile. The title is ‘Canon Patrick
Sheehan – His Life and Writings’. The speaker is Ms. Nora O’Keeffe.

Annual Coffee Morning
Thursday September 12th
10am until 12noon
at The Castle Hotel Blarney
Blarney local youth theatre group ‘Footlights’, performed their
annual end of year play ‘Sparkleshark’ in Scoil Mhuire gan Smal at
the start of the Summer. It tells a story of a boy called Jake, who is
excluded from his peer group and is forced to use his imagination to invent
a better world for himself. Various characters join in on Jakes adventures,
which all take place on a roof of an apartment block, the characters
eventually becoming friends and forgetting their differences.
James Downey (Blarney) gave a stellar performance as Jake and was ably
supported by co drama members Alison Prendergast (Tower), Riannon
Connick (Blarney), Eimer Walsh, Luke Murphy, Sean Barry, Conor
Sexton, Sean Creedan, Conor Vaughan and Dylan Roche, all from
Grenagh. Special mention must go to Luke Murphy who gave an
outstanding improvised performance, exhibiting a great natural flair for
comedy. Many weeks of preparation certainly paid off under the
directorship of drama leader Fionn Woodhouse and his colleagues
Rebecca Curtain and Lorraine O’Donovan.
A special thank you must be also given to school principal Padraig
Sheehan who facilitated the drama group to rehearse and perform their
play with the schools’ excellent stage facilities.
Footlights drama group is a non profit making organisation, offering
drama workshops, which meets every Tuesday in Blarney Community
Hall every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8pm and will be recommencing in
early October 2013. Further information from Fionn on 085 2402484.

St. Lachteen's National School Donoughmore welcomed 30 new Junior
Infant pupils to the school this week as the start of the academic school

BLARNEY PERSON OF THE YEAR
AWARDS 2013
BLARNEY
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The 2013 Blarney
People of the Year
monthly winners
Martin O’Shea
John and Margaret Finnerty
Dan Ahern
John O’Donoghue
www.blarneycommunity.net
THE AUGUST BLARNEY PERSON OF THE
MONTH IS FATHER TIM HAZELWOOD
Fr. Tim has served as curate in
the Parish of Blarney for the
past 10 years and during that
time has won the love, respect,
trust and admiration of his
parishioners.
First and foremost for his
ability to engage with people of
all ages on a personal level. His
easy and approachable manner
and good sense of fun and craic
enables him to interact with
young and old on the street, on
the sideline, in the classroom, in
the homes at Station masses and
when visiting the sick and
housebound. In the key moments
of parishioners lies Fr. Tim has
been present - at baptisms, first
communions, confirmations,
weddings, reconciliation and in
the final hours of parishioners
lives he has been there.
Secondly, for his commitment to
and vision of church as being the
people of God. His model of
church is one of openness and
welcome. Through honest
dialogue and a listening heart he
encouraged and nurtured his
congregation to be the church.
He has given his congregation an
energy and excitement about
what can be achieved together.
The mark of true leadership. Fr.
Tim spoke into the hearts of his
congregation; with little
anecdotes he managed to connect
the lived experience of the
congregation with the Gospel
message. Every week he gave his
congregation food for thought an idea to chew on, a thought to
ponder, something that very often
prompted spontaneous
discussions in the supermarket
aisles and around the dinner
tables at home.
Thirdly, for his integrity and
courage. Fr. Tim is not afraid to
challenge and to speak the truth
in love no matter what the
personal cost. Fr. Tim is a
member of the Association of
Catholic Priests which provides a
forum for a voice for priests to
reflect, discuss and comment on
issues affecting the Irish Church
and society today. In turn Fr. Tim
gave his parishioners a voice to
reflect, discuss and comment on
the Irish church and other issues
close to their hearts. During
station masses he threw open the
opportunity for a shared homily
and met the challenge to meet as
a parish group to discuss what we
love and care about.
Fr. Tim has given the best of
everything he has in his service
to the parish and for that we are
truly grateful. He will be sorely
missed when he goes to take up
his new appointment as parish
priest in Killeagh shortly. Go
neiri go geal leat Fr Tim.
Father Tim’s name now goes forward with previous monthly winners Stephen
O’Brien, Adrian O’Connell, John O’Donoghue, Dan Ahern, Gaelscoil
Mhuscrai Parents Commitee, John and Margaret Finnerty and Martin
O’Shea, to the overall award of Blarney Person of The Year Award 2013
which will be announced at a ceremony in January 2014.

Labyrinth Creative Health, Grenagh, has been chosen as one of the
Munster venues for the filming of an exciting new children’s programme, ‘Storybike’ to be aired by RTE this autumn.
‘Storybike’ will feature a magical storyteller Blaithin, arriving at each
venue by bicycle to read children a fun story of local heritage, the children
will then complete an art project in the theme of the story. All children
participating are students of Ann Burns (Labyrinth Creative Health) and
between the ages of 5 and 8.
Labyrinth Creative Health has recently added to its grounds a magical
fairy forest which includes trickling water, fairy tree houses with rope
bridges, comical tree creatures and trees that have been brought to life
making it the perfect place to host this episode of this enchanted new series. The country cabin shown in the programme, which hosts art and pottery classes for all ages has been recently renovated with the help of Ann’s
5-11 year old art class. The Free Wee Library, inspired by the project in
Buncrana, (recently shown on RTE) now fills one room in the cabin allowing users to swap an old book for a new one.
Creative Art Classes and pottery parties for all ages will be running across

100 reasons to celebrate for lovely Tower lady, Peg King
Want to know the secret to a long and
happy life? "Leave the worrying to
someone else, always take your
medication with a Martini and, lastly,
don't mix with old people!"
That is according to Peg King who
celebrated her 100th birthday with a large
gathering of family and friends on
September 1st 2013.
Peg was born a century ago in
Limerick, the middle girl in a family of
three. She met her husband to be Alfred
(Alfie) at a dance when she was 21 and
married him in Sept 1944, after making
him wait ten years. It was a mixed
marriage as Alfie was Church of Ireland
and the young couple had to be married
at 7.30am in the morning behind the altar
of Limerick Cathedral, after the plucky
young woman refuse to marry out of
sight in the sacristry! The Cathedral was
packed with well wishers who came to
offer support and witness their marriage.
Alfie’s work then took the couple to
Galway where they settled and had four
of their five daughters before Alfie was
then transferred to Cork and Peg, settled
in Galway, decided not to accompany
him but maintain their home in Galway.
That was until she met a lady who
warned about the 'Den of Iniquity that
was Cork' and also informed her that
'Women were now going into pubs and
she had better keep an eye on her good
looking husband!' So, off to Cork she
went!
Their fifth and last daughter was born
in Cork, and they had a long and happy
life together here before Alfie passed
away 16 years ago.
Peg lives with daughter Collette and
surrounded by her loving family, as her
other four daughters Mary, Violet,
Frankie, Lilly all live in close proximity
as do the majority of her 14
grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Another successful Courtbrack Harvest
Once again, large crowds turned out for each event of this year’s
Courtbrack Harvest Festival, which like last year, was graced with the
sun’s presence. The Festival got underway on Wednesday, 28th August,
with a Family 5km Fun Walk & Run, a new addition to the Festival this
year. The weather was ideal as over 60 people set off from Courtbrack
Cross to run/walk the well-known local walking route, Casey’s Loop. All
were greeted with tea/coffee and light refreshments on their return to the
Community Centre.
Friday, 30th August, saw the Community Centre alive with activity as
people busied themselves putting the finishing touches to the harvest
theme decorated Hall, and preparing for Come Dine With Us, Our
Gathering 2013. Shortly after 9pm, the hall was full of people enjoying the
culinary delights prepared for them by their hosts, and chatting
happily. After dinner, guests were treated to some entertainment including
traditional Irish music performed by the talented musicians of Courtbrack
Music Centre, songs sung by some of our local talented young singers, and
set dancing courtesy of local young set dancers. The Harvest Queen, Olga
Dorney, daughter of Michael and Ronnie Dorney, was also crowned on the
night.
The Harvest Barbeque took place at Browne’s Bar, Newcastle, on
Saturday night. Despite a discernable dip in temperature, a large crowd
attended and enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere and great food. Open air
dancing on the night was to the sound of the very talented and diverse
Pacific Blue.
The Old Time Threshing and Vintage Display on Sunday, run by
Courtbrack Vintage Society, brought the Harvest Festival to a close. As it
did last year, the sun shone down on proceedings with record numbers of
both exhibitors and spectators attending. The addition this year of a
Country Market proved an attraction in itself and added a new dimension
to the day. The newly crowned Harvest Queen, Olga Dorney, got the Old
Time Threshing underway and oversaw the day’s events, including the
drawing of the winning tickets in the Harvest Queen Raffle.
Overall, the Harvest Festival was a resounding success and raised much
needed funds for the renovation of
Courtbrack Community
Centre. Courtbrack Community
Association and Courtbrack Vintage
Society would jointly like to thank all
those who attended the various events
over the course of the Festival and all
those who helped in any way in the
organisation and running of the
events. We hope to see you all again
next year!

It will literally be a case of ‘all systems go’ at The Farm, Grenagh as it
plays host to a spectacular End of Season Harvest Festival on Sunday
15th September from 12pm. The Farm will showcase an impressive
working display of machinery from the 1940s onwards including a silage
harvesting demonstration of single-chop, double-chop, and very early
systems. A collection of over 10 combine harvesters, dating back to a
Massey Harris from the 1940s, which was bought in Merchants Quay in
1949; right up to a Clayson Newholland, which was bought in the OK
Garages, Cork in 1973, will be in action on the traditional working farm
throughout the afternoon.
Mick Forde, owner of The Farm and organiser of the End of Season
Harvest Festival said, “The Clayson Newholland cut corn on this very
farm back in 1975 and on the day will be driven by John and Willy
O’Connell of Blarney, who operated the combine until the machine was
retired in 1998. ”
Following the machinery display, the straw will be baled, collected and
loaded using, the then modern, systems of the time. The field will then be
ploughed, harrowed, and sown again using a collection of traditional
tractors and machines, with the help of some local enthusiasts and
collectors. The end of season Harvest Festival, starting at 12pm, is open to
everyone and promises a fun day out for all the family, who can explore
The Farm’s Heritage Exhibition and traditional farmyard, and enjoy
something tasty in the café and restaurant serving great farm fresh food
and home baking; while vintage machinery enthusiasts are sure to delight
at the fantastic machinery displays throughout the afternoon. Harvesting
will depend on the weather, so check out The Farm Grenagh on Facebook
for updates. Admission to the End of Season Harvest Festival is €8 per
person, with family deals available.
A share of the proceeds taken on the gate at the End of Season
Harvest Festival will be added to the total funds raised at a coffee
morning The Farm will host on Saturday 21st September from 10am 12pm in aid of Marymount Hospice.
Amy Fitzpatrick from
Cork, came to us here in
Educogym in desperation
wanting to lose weight for
her upcoming wedding at
the start of August this
year.
Amy not only achieved
her goals but exceeded
them and transformed her
whole body and shape.
She lost 3 stone in 4.5
months and went from a
size 18-20 to a size 10
simply by working out
three times a week at our
gym for 20 minute training sessions with a personal trainer doing weights
training and by sticking to a nutritional programme given to her by our inhouse nutritionists-healthy eating, no magic!
We meet a lot of women on a weekly basis and more often than not they
are considering all sorts of drastic measure to lose weight. However,
they realise very quickly that by just eating the right food and by doing
weights to burn fat and build muscle the weight will come off naturally
and healthily.

North Presentation Adult Education Centre is located at The North
Presentation Secondary School in Farranree and our Principal is Ellen Lyons.
In North Presentation Adult Ed we believe that learning is a lifelong process
and that there is no upper age limit to acquiring new skills, new outlets for
interaction etc. Our students range in age from mid-twenties to early eighties!!! We
offer a small but very high quality programme of courses such as English
literature, maths, language studies, computer studies, history etc . We aim to cater
for adult students who are taking the first steps on the road of learning to those
who are looking to go further in their subject area. For example you can join a “
get computer smart” class as a total beginner with computers and then progress
over time into certified courses that go all the way to ECDL Level.. We call it
pathways to learning, You advance from step to step at your pace. That is the
approach we encourage here at North Pres.
All our courses are certified and are run under the Department of Education’s
Back to Education Initiative which offers an attractive fees package so that money
is not a stumbling block to your entry into a course.
Equally we are very proud of the social interaction that we have helped to foster
within our classes and we see this as a vital component of lifelong learning. We
like to go on field trips to history exhibitions, theatre productions, film
presentations and summer outings. Learning is FUN!!!!
Our school has a very close relationship with the surrounding community in
Farranree and this extends to the Adult Ed section as well. We are very proud of
how our adult ed students always comment on the great atmosphere and welcome
that they find when they come to North Pres.
So why not come along to our information session, Tuesday 10th September 2013,
10.45am, in the Family Resource Centre, Church of the Resurrection, Farranree.
You might just find something to interest you and brighten up those winter
mornings!

Make sure you have a free cancer screen with a participating dentist.
Oral cancer is among the 10 most common cancers worldwide. 98%
of patients affected are over the age of 40, but it is increasingly seen in
younger people. Men are more commonly affected than women, though
the difference in incidence is less marked than it was in the past.
The cause of oral cancer is complex and there are many factors involved. Risk factors include:
1. Tobacco causes oral cancer.
2 Alcohol use, particularly beer and spirits.
3. The combined use of both tobacco and alcohol is associated with a
greater risk of developing oral cancer than either exposure alone.
4. Sun exposure is associated with an increased risk of lip cancer.
5. Diet poor in fresh fruit and vegetables.
6. Poor oral health.
The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often resemble a lump, a red
or white patch or an ulcer. If any such lesion does not heal normally
within 3 weeks, attendance at your dentist for examination is recommended. It is worth noting that pain is usually a late feature in oral cancer.
Early detection and prompt treatment offer the best hope to the patient with oral cancer. Every time you visit your dentist for a routine examination, an oral cancer screen is performed. Both the medical card and
PRSI schemes entitle patients to free annual dental examinations.

BLARNEY BEAUTY AND
HOLISTIC COLLEGE
Another brand new business to Blarney will be opening its doors to
new students this November. Lorna Jean Bolster, the woman who opened
a fantastic salon on Station Road recently is the main driver behind the
new college.
Speaking of her reasoning behind the new venture she said, “Since
opening in Blarney recently I have noticed what a great place it is to have
a business and how supportive the local community are so that’s why I
have stuck with Blarney for the college. Both Debbie Magee, the other
teacher, and I have nearly a quarter of a century experience between us,
and both of us can’t wait to start teaching in Blarney.”
Blarney Beauty and Holistic College will be launching with two
courses; a Beauty Diploma that will be starting in November and running
every Monday and Wednesday, and a Swedish Massage Diploma which
will be starting in November. Other courses will also be launched shortly
after opening, details of which will be published closer to the date. All
courses are VTCT accredited which are recognised qualifications
worldwide.
All details of location and times of the two launch courses will be noted in
The Muskerry News next month.

Behind the Castle Walls
with Adam, Head Gardener
Blarney Castle
August was another generally sunny and
dry month with rainfall well below average
but the gardens have coped pretty well. We are
struggling with low water levels in the rivers
and bog garden area, and as a result we have had to turn off one of our
waterfalls.
Our newly sown wildflower meadows were very slow to start this spring
but have now caught up and provide a great splash of colour for walkers, as
does the fuchsia hedge that is in full flower on the lake walk. We intend to
introduce even more wildflower areas next year. They are a wonderful
feature and greatly benefit the local wildlife.
We have just completed our wigloo (willow igloo) in the lower rock close
by the dolmen. It was woven from living willow and sits nicely alongside
our existing willow tunnel. This makes good use of a very boggy area of
ground that we have been struggling with.
The herbaceous borders are starting to fade in places and we are dead
heading and tidying as required. Overall it has been a good show this year
and we are very pleased.
It’s the time of year for pruning hedges, mulching beds and general tidying
up in the vegetable garden. We have been cutting back our old raspberry and
loganberry canes and tying in the new ones for next years crop. We have dug
up the last of the potatoes. Lifted shallots, garlic and onions and planted out
brassicas and leeks. Now is the time to sow spinach, winter lettuce and
rocket to take you through to the autumn. We are planning some renovations
in our walled garden over the winter and intend to build a large fruit cage
and some new raised beds which should make things easier to manage.
We have our first proper apple crop from our 5 year old Irish orchard. All
of the trees are heritage varieties and it is very interesting to compare the
differences between them. As the crop improves in future years we intend to
make our own apple juice, and I might have a go at cider. In the mean time
our indoor grapes have also had a good year, and our newer seedless variety
has been a big hit.
Bulb planting can be started now. The fresher they are when you plant
them, the better they perform. Make a few notes as to where you would like
some extra colour in the garden, then select bulbs that suit. Too often bulbs
end up as an impulse buy that get stuck in a corner and forgotten about, so
don’t forget to label them.
We will have to start thinking about winter protection of less hardy plants
over the next few weeks. Some of our tree fern varieties and specimens in
our tropical border will have to be lifted and brought indoors for the winter
months. Others will be protected with straw, fleece or a heavy mulch. We
will then pray that we have a mild winter.
I look forward to seeing you in the gardens. Adam

O’LEARY’S CENTRA
TOWER CUSTOMER
WINS SHOPPING SPREE
Jim receiving his €150 voucher from Paddy and Lisa O’Leary, O’Learys Centra Tower.
Also pictured are Leo Collins and Seamus McHugh, CBE.
Local man Jim O’Connor,
Kerry Road, Tower bagged
himself a bargain recently when
he became the 200,000th
customer to use the SelfCheckout system in O’Leary’s
Centra, Tower.
Jim, a regular user of the Self-Checkouts
within the store won a €150 Centra
shopping voucher and was delighted with
the prize. “I always use the self service tills
when I shop in O’Learys Centra”, he
explained, “they are great as you don’t
have to queue as you would have at the
other checkouts so I find them much more
convenient”.
Store manager Lisa O’Leary outlined the
benefits the Self-Checkouts have brought
to the store. “We wanted to offer a better
customer service to our shoppers and after
a lot of research we decided to invest in the
Self-Checkouts to allow people a more
convenient method of paying for their
goods. The self-checkout system has
greatly reduced queues within the store and
we have a large number of customers that
use them on a regular basis.”
The system has been developed by CBE,
Ireland’s largest supplier of point of sale
solutions, who are based in Claremorris,
Co. Mayo. Employing over 120 people in
their Irish and UK operations, CBE
developed the Self-Checkout system at
their Irish R&D centre following a lot of
research of both national and international
retail trends. The system has since been
implemented into a number of
supermarkets throughout the country.
Contrary to common perception, the
Self-Checkouts are not installed to deplete
human resources but rather to enhance the
customer service. They free staff to focus
on other important aspects of the business
such as stocking shelves and helping
customers.
Leo Collins, CBE Area Manager, is
thrilled with the success of the system in
the store, “We are delighted that O’Leary’s
Centra has implemented our innovative
Self-Checkout solution. As a client of ours
for many years, it’s great to see them
investing in their store to offer their
customers a better shopping experience”.
With 200,000 customers having already
used the system, it seems the shoppers of
Tower, especially lucky Jim, are also
delighted with the new service.

Corcaigh
Abu!
No lack of support for
the wonderful Cork
team from Scoil Chroi
Iosa, Blarney.
Blarney GAA and Blarney United FC played out a thrilling draw in the
annual golf challenge recently. Blarney GAA retained the cup they won
last year, with a 4 half points each stalemate at Blarney Golf Resort. Both
respective captains, Ronan Byrne and Alan O’Brien, were happy with the
draw and look forward to next year again.
Presentation, meal and drinks took place in the Blarney Castle Hotel
later that evening and a great night followed this very successful event. A
huge thank you to both teams and sponsors for a memorable day. Blarney
Abu!
Temple United had two teams in action over the weekend.
The U15s suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Corinthians but luck
favored the U13s in the first local derby of the season against old rivals
Castleview, winning on a score line of 4 - 2.
Chris Dowdall opened the scoring with a fine solo effort finishing
with an over head kick to the roof of the net. He then went on to complete
a hat trick after some great work and help from his team mates. Aaron
MacCarthy got the other goal to seal a great game of ball by both teams.
The season has only started by for Temple but with everything in place the
prospects look great for a successful season.
The schoolboys will play all their home games on our new pitch Temple
Park 2. This is the result of many years of hard work from all the
committee and we would like to say a big thank you to the Cork City
Council for giving us the grounds.
Our Academy is back up and running every Friday at the Parochial Hall
Gurranabraher for all kids both boys and girls aged between 5 and 10
years. Kick off time is 3.45pm.
Tee time for Ballincollig Business Association
The course is set for the Ballincollig Business Association
(BBA) annual golf classic will be held at Lee Valley Golf & Country
Club on Thursday, 19th September.
The BBA’s involvement within the community is increasing each year
and this fund-raising event is essential for the continuity of its success.
The money raised from all of the golf classics has been put to very good
use, in particular the installation of the festival lights within the town, their
maintenance and also their planned growth over the next number of
years. Funding also goes towards the organising of the hugely successful
Business Lunches with guest speakers such as An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny,
former World Cycling champion and Tour de France winner, Stephen
Roche and former head coach of the Ireland National Rugby Union team,
Declan Kidney. The St Patrick’s Day parade is also another great success,
not only for the town but also local businesses. Without the public's
continued support these would not have been possible.
The organising committee has been very busy preparing for the event
and are appealing for as much support as possible for this year’s golf
classic. The entry fee this year is just 175 for a team of three (including
lunch) with a special offer of 150 for tee times booked between 8-10am.
If people find that they are not in a position to sponsor a team, then the
BBA would be very thankful if people would be kind enough to sponsor a
Tee Box or a Green for €30 or sponsor both for 50 providing your
business with some valuable advertising.
Anybody who is interested in entering a team should contact Nevada
Bob's on 021 4877180.
This 2013 golf classic is just another event that is being organised by
Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) are holding their first ever
Meningitis Meander in Ballincollig Regional Park on Saturday, 21st
September and are appealing to the local community to sign up and
help raise vital funds for research into meningitis and septicaemia.
The walk is 5k, will start at 2.30pm and will take approx 1.5-2 hours.
The registration fee for the event is €10 per person or €25 per family
(this includes a meningitis rubber band, goody bag and light
refreshment). Come and walk solo, bring a team, wear fancy dress, the
possibilities are endless!
There are around 200-300 cases of meningitis and septicaemia every
year in Ireland. This means two deaths will occur every month and further
20% are left with severe after effects, such as brain damage, hearing loss
and amputations. Your help could save a life!

Happy 40th birthday to Lakewood Pitch and Putt Club
34 | Muskerry News
Report & pics Mike English
Forty years of Pitch and Putt at Lakewood Club, Ovens, were marked on August
18th when long serving Secretary, John Coleman, planted a tree and unveiled a
commemorative plaque. The club also availed of the opportunity to erect a plaque
at the tree which was planted by Paddy Harkins, the then President of the PPUI, at
the official opening in 1973.
Paddy was unable to attend but his daughter, Gretchen Ahern, read a message of
goodwill from him and unveiled the plaque.
Chairman, Frank Riordan, introduced the various speakers including Richard
Wood, Padraig O’Shea, Vice President PPUI, Margaret O’Riordan, Chairperson
Cork County Board and Peter de Foubert, Chairman John A. Wood Sports and
Social Club.
A wine reception followed in the Sports and Social Club. A fourball was held
earlier in the day featuring past and present members and amongst the winners
were Noel McCarthy and Billy Webster, John Ahern and Pat O’Keeffe, Darren

Though the history of Lakewood Pitch and Putt Club dates back to its
foundation year of 1973, the idea of a club had been formed by the John A. Wood
Ltd Sports and Social Club as early as 1970. In that year John A Wood provided a
site which was to be developed into a sports area for the employees of the
Company. Soccer and GAA pitches were laid out almost immediately and the
wheels were put in motion towards forming a nine hole pitch and putt course and
this became a reality in August 1973 when Paddy Harkins, President PPUI, (later
to become captain at Lakewood), officially opened the course.
Present Vice President, Danny Murphy, was elected first Chairman and Tim
Lucey, a founder member took over in 1974. When the secretary resigned in March
The Cork Taekwondo (Club
Churchfield/Bweeng) probably needed to pay for
extra luggage given the enormous amount of
medals they came home with from their recent
trip to London for The World Taekwondo
Championships.
Pictured are Michael Riordan, Bweeng; Gold
Medalist Rebecca Pardy, Churchfield; Silver
medalist and club instructor, Darren Healy; Seven
year old Scott Healy from Bweeng who won two
Gold Medals; Silver medalist Danny Long,
Churchfield; Double Gold Medalist Lauren
Singleton, Bweeng; and Gold and Silver medalist
Michael Duke, Churchfield. Missing is silver
medalist Kevin Lee from Churchfield.
1975, Tim introduced a fellow John a Wood employee, John Coleman, to the
position and he has remained in that job to the present day. John has worked
tirelessly to keep the club to the forefront of pitch and putt affairs. Frank Collins
was Treasurer from 1975 until his untimely death in 1988 when his wife Sheila
took over the role and has been a faithful servant of the club to date.
Many course and club house improvements have taken place over the years
while members have been doing well at various levels of play. Current lady
captain, Valerie O’Leary was recently selected on the Cork Ladies Inter County
team. The club made a breakthrough at National level in 1990 when Davy
O’Donovan won the Juvenile Strokeplay Championship and Teresa Conway won
the shortlived Junior ladies Matchplay Championship. Under the guidance of
juvenile officers, Rene O’Shea and Eileen Murphy, the Cork Juvenile Inter County
team was composed completely of Lakewood players. The club’s juveniles, under
the guidance of Steven Enneguess, won this year’s Cork Juvenile League and
Anthony McSweeney was selected on the Cork inter county team.
Lakewood has contributed officers to Cork, Munster and N.E.C, bodies
including John Coleman, Dan Conway RIP, Paddy Kelleher RIP and Steven
Enneguess who is current coaching co-ordinator of the PPUI.
The National Mixed Foursomes will take place at Lakewood on September 29 th.
Frank Riordan is in his tenth year as Chairman and heads up the following
committee: President, Jo McCarthy, Vice Presidents, Joe Kavanagh, Danny
Murphy, Jim O’Shea, Vice Chairman, Pat Moore, Secretary, John Coleman,
Treasurer, Sheila Collins, Competitions Secretary, Gretchen Ahern, PRO, Pat
Ryan, Juvenile Officer, Steven Enneguess, Club Coach, John Ahern, Lady Captain,
Valerie O’Leary, Lady Vice Captain, Pat Conway, Gents Captain, Patrick J. Curtin,
Gents Vice Captain, Pat Twomey, General Committee, John Curtin, Eileen
Murphy, John P. Murphy, John O’Donoghue, Mary O’Donovan, Sheila O’Leary
and Rene O’Shea.

entries are welcome, whether corporate or family teams, and with each
team being led by a celebrity, there is sure to be plenty of competitive
spirit and good fun on the day. Entertainers, face painters, carnival
booths as well as local farmers’ market stalls will also ensure a great
atmosphere and super family fun for all ages.

Inniscarra Camogie Club hosted an U9 Camogie Blitz involving 8 teams on August 18th in Inniscarra. Nice weather gave an excellent start to the day
and all of the games were keenly contested in a very sporting and competitive manner. All players were provided with party bags and refreshments afterwards in Inniscarra Camogie Hall where an overhead screen displayed pictures of the day’s activities to players, coaches and family members. A huge
thank you to everyone who supported the event, including the eight teams on the day who were Blarney, Inniscarra Team 1, Inniscarra Team 2, Ballincollig, Millstreet, Sarsfields, Fr O’Neills and Carrigaline.

they prepare to travel to

October for the annual Top
12 tournament featuring
leading clubs from across
Europe. Michael Kett is at

Are Headaches Controlling Your Life?
If You’re Female, Over 25 And Suffer With Migraines –
These Are The Facts You Must Know
Living with headaches is tough.
Day after day of being miserable, irritable,
and looking a lot older than you really are.
The frustration of knowing that your friends
and family don’t understand what you’re
going through.
Add this to doctors’ visits, MRI’s and CT
scans -- which only come back with “normal”
results.
And that’s not all… trying one medication
after another, feeling like you’re on a merrygo-round of drugs.
All this is enough to make anyone want to
scream!
IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS:
1) Approximately 22 million women are affected
by migraines in the United States.
2) Medical science has discovered that most
headaches are caused by damaged structures
around the neck like joints, ligaments, muscles,
and cervical discs, all of which have complex
nerve endings.
3) Research has proven certain natural
treatments have great success with headaches
– even better than massage and medications –
and with no side effects.
Why not get rid of those debilitating headaches
today? Read the full facts on this page!
My name is Dr. Eric Kelly, and I’ve been
helping patients with neck tension,
headaches and migraines live pain free for
years now.
Every week I hear how women suffer
from severe headaches – statements
like…
• “I feel like my head is in a vice.”
• “My eyes hurt and I feel so drowsy.”
• “I have to lay down.”
• “I’ve had migraines since childhood.”
• “Muscle tension in the neck and pain into
the shoulders.”
They tell me they’re sick and tired of jumping
from one headache medication to the next.
Here’s what I hear…
“I am tired of being looked upon as someone
who is only out there to get medicine. I only
want RELIEF. I don't know why that is so
hard for people to understand. I don't want to
be treated badly anymore. I want to get help,
and I want to get rid of the headaches.”
Imagine being able to live life like a normal
person again, pain free and without
headaches -- being able to play with your
kids, enjoy time with friends, and not have to
worry that your headache will hit you at just
the wrong time.
I’m running a special 14-day offer for those
suffering with headaches. Until 27h
September, €40 will get you all the services I
normally charge new patients €265 for!
Why would I practically give away my
services? Because patients tell me too
often…
“I only wished I had
found you sooner”
This happens so often, I decided to do
something about it and run this ad. Just call
before 27th September and here’s what
you’ll get…
• An in-depth consultation about your
headaches where I will listen…really
listen…to the details of your unique
situation.
• A complete neuromuscular and skeletal
examination of the head and neck so we can
find the problem
• A full set of specialised x-rays to
determine if posture or joint problem is
contributing to your pain … (NOTE: These
would normally cost you up to €195).
• A thorough analysis of your exam and xrays where we’ll map out how you can get
rid of your headaches once and for all.
• A special report complimenting your
recommendations that reveals the foods you
should never, ever eat when suffering from
chronic headaches.
Could This Drugless Treatment
Be Your Headache Solution Too?
Numerous studies have shown the benefits
of spinal adjustments with headache
patients.
The Boline Study
This study compared two groups of
headache patients, half went for chiropractic
adjustments, the other half took amitriptyline,
a medication often prescribed for the
treatment of severe tension headache pain.
After six weeks researchers found that
chiropractic patients experienced almost no
side effects. And only the chiropractic
patients continued to report fewer
headaches when treatment ended.
Discover the drug-free and
pain-free and natural treatment
for getting rid of headaches.
The Duke Study
Medical experts concluded that spinal
manipulations resulted in almost immediate
improvement for headaches. Patients also
had significantly fewer side effects and
longer-lasting relief of headaches than a
commonly prescribed medication.
Recurring Headaches Are Not Normal
No question… if you are having headaches
then something is wrong. Pain is your body’s
way of telling you something is wrong.
Finding the problem and fixing it has got to
be top priority! Call today…
Phone 021-4824450
Call anytime between the hours of 9:00am12:00pm or 3:30pm-6:00pm Monday through
Friday. Tell the receptionist you’d like to
come in for the Special Headache
Evaluation before 27th September.
Look, you have very little to risk and a lot to
gain. Call today and we can get started with
your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon
as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our
office is called Glanmire Chiropractic Clinic
and you can find us next to AIB Bank in
Glanmire.
Sincerely,
Eric Kelly, D.C.
P.S. Why Suffer With Years Of Misery?
How many years can your body handle
taking one pill after another?
That’s no way to live, not when there could
be an easy solution to your problem. Many
of the pain medications available are quite
addicting and can have drastic side effects.
Call today. I may be able to help you live a
normal, pain-free life again.
