IRISH WILDLIFE TRUST
HERITAGE WEEK EVENTS
The Cork Branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust run a wide range of
events and manage projects to protect wildlife. This year they
are offering two events as part of Heritage Week.
24th August at 4pm Talk on Cork City Otter Project.
Meet in the Vision Centre, North Main Street, Cork City. Free event.
This will consist of a talk about the recent urban otter project in
Cork City. There are 6 otters using the urban rivers. They have been
identified by DNA analysis. Come and find out about the survey and
how the cork branch participated in this work.
24th August at 1pm Ladybirds and bugs.
Meet in Glengarrif Woods. Childrens event. Come and find out
about how you can help us to find out more about ladybirds. Also
includes a bug hunt. Children must be accompanied by a parent.

Along with Berrings Community Association, Berrings Macra
are hosting a Know your Neighbour Event in Berrings Village
on Saturday the 17th of August. This will begin at 7.30pm after
Saturday evening Mass and run through-out the night. The event
will begin with some light refreshments with the dancing starting at
9pm and going on for the night. Lots of fun to be had by all and it
is a great chance to get to know people in the locality.

Arts launch a jam-packed new
term from September 2013 at
various locations throughout Cork
city and county
This year the Montfort College of
Performing Arts is proud to launch a range of
superior classes for your little ones throughout
the academic year of 2013/14.
Classes range from Dance, Drama and
Singing at various locations throughout Cork
city and county. With a growing programme
of classes including the addition of Ballet
classes, an expanded Adult Acting Studio, and
the addition of the Montfort Singing
Academy, the Montforts will be expanding
geographically also, taking on new studios in
Ballincollig, Garryduff, and Macroom,
bringing their presence up to 14 different
locations across Cork city and county. With an
experienced staff and expert guidance
students will be put through their paces in all
aspects of performing while all the time
ensuring they have as much fun as possible
and building self-confidence in an exciting,
creative and nurturing environment.
The Montfort College of Performing Arts is
proud to be the only stage school in Cork who
deliver not only a full scale end of year show
in Cork Opera House but also produce a fullblown musical production in the autumn in
the Everyman Theatre, one Spring show in the
Half Moon Theatre and also a hilarious
Pantomime in the Firkin Crane and a full
Adult Production in a site specific venue,
ensuring that all of their students are given an
opportunity to perform in some of the best
venues Cork has to offer. This Autumn will
see a fully staged production of Joseph and
his Amazing Tecnicolour Dreamcoat in the
Everyman Theatre from the 21 - 24 October.

SOME EARLY TOURIST VIEWS OF IRELAND
In the tour of the French traveller, Boullaye le
Gouz in Ireland in 1644 he observed that ‘their
beer is very good and the eau de vie, which they
call Brandovin (Brandy), excellent. The butter, the
beef and the mutton are better than in England.’
“Their bread was broad oat-cakes baked on a flat stone, made of
stuff much like that which the Welsh call Haver-meal; but their beer is
very strong, which they brew on purpose, as I imagine to verifie the
proverb, ‘Good Drink, is Meat, Drink, and Cloth’; for in the coldest
season they will go bare-foot, and be clad very thin; but they will be
sure to keep their understandings warm, and line their insides well with
their potent liquor”.
He also left a short description of the different types of Irish
dwellings, which is worth quoting. “The towns are built in the English
fashion, but the houses in the country are in this manner. Two stakes
are fixed in the ground, across which is a transverse pole to support
two rows of rafters, on the two sides, which are covered with leaves
and straw. The cabins are of another fashion. There are four walls the
height of a man, supporting rafter over which they thatch straw and
leaves. They are without chimneys, and make the fire in the middle of
the hut, which greatly incommodes those who are not fond of smoke.
The castles or houses of the nobility consist of four walls extremely
high, thatched with straw; but to tell the truth, they are nothing but
square towers without windows, or at least having such small apertures
as to give no more light than there is in a prison. They have little
furniture, and cover their rooms with rushes, of which they make their
beds in summer, and of straw in winter. They put the rushes a foot deep
on their floors, and on their windows, and many ornament the ceilings
with branches”.
A man named Campbell alludes to the smoky condition of these
houses. “Sometimes,” he says, “they have a hole in the roof to let out
the smoke and sometimes none. For to have a chimney would be a
luxury too great for the generality. The consequence is a house full of
smoke, at least in the upper region where it floats thick clouds, the
lower part being pretty clear of it. To avoid the acrimony of which you
are obliged to stoop down, and the poor man of the house immediately
offers you a low stool, that you may be, what he calls, out of the
smoke. And this is, probably, the only stool in the house; for the
children nestle round the fire almost naked, with their toes in the ashes.
Even the women though not so naked, sit upon their hams in the same
way. But in spite of their general adhesion to the ground, the old
people are, for the most part, blear-eyed, with pale and sooty faces.
The hearth is placed in the middle of the house, and their fuel is
made of earth and cow-dung dryed in the sun. The smoke goes through
no particular place, but breaks through every part between the rods or
wattles of which they make their doors, sides and roof of the house,
which commonly is no bigger than an over-grown pig-stye, to which
they have two doors, one always shut, on that side where the wind
blows; from whence I believe it is they brag they have the quickest
architects in all the world, because they can build a house in a day.
They delight not in a variety of rooms, and that they may have all their
family about them enclosed in one room, the good man and his wife
have their bed raised about half as high as the roof, getting into it by a
stone or two set by the side. The man and the wife lie at one end, and
what children they have (boys and girls) lie at the other, their feet
meeting all together, higgle-de-piggle-dee. The rest of the family they
dispose of thus; a goat or an ewe they tye to the beds feet; over their
heads roost their cocks and hens, and now and then how the nature of
their name, foul the foul faces of their master and dame; this dung
likewise serves instead of soap when they have occasion to wash ,
which is but seldom, having nothing besides their cloaths to wear, but a
neck cloth and a flannel smock.”
Otway describes the sleeping arrangements in remote districts in the
1700’s. “The floor is thickly strewn with fresh rushes, and stripping
themselves entirely, the whole family lie down at once and together,
covering themselves with blankets, if they have them, if not, with their
day clothing, but they lie down decently, and in order; the eldest
daughter next the wall farthest from the door, then all the sisters
according to their ages; next the mother, father, and sons in succession,
and then the strangers, whether the travelling pedlar or the tailor or
beggar; thus the strangers are kept aloof from the female part of the
family, and if there be an apparent community, there is great propriety
of conduct.” This is what was called sleeping in “Stradogue.”
The above descriptions appeared in 1904 in The Journal of The Cork
Historical and Archaeological Society.

will host a special ‘Walking Tour of Blarney Village’ on Thursday

The July Blarney Person of the Month is Stephen ‘Fan’ O’Brien
“I would like to nominate Stephen 'Fan' O' Brien as
'Blarney Person of the Month'. Stephen is an
extremely popular Blarney man and is known
locally as the unofficial 'Lord Major of Blarney'.
His commitment to local community is
unwavering. His work down through the years with
Blarney GAA is of particular note. He is currently
secretary of Blarney GAA Club, while still a very
active playing member. Stephen will be
remembered for his recent appearance on popular
game show 'Winning Streak' where he rubbed
shoulders and charmed well known TV
personalities Geri Maye and Marty Whelan. It is

Cork University Dental School and Hospital, in conjunction with
the Health Research Board of Ireland, are running a study on dental
fillings in older adults. If you are over 65 years of age and have
any of your natural teeth remaining you are can avail of a free
dental exam and a scale and polish. Some of those who come for
the free check-up will be offered a place on a study looking at
dental fillings in older adults. If accepted onto the study

The month of June was an exceptionally busy month at Gaelscoil
Mhuscraí with school tours and trips! Junior Infants, Senior Infants
and 1st Class spent a day at Leahy’s Open Farm in Dungourney.
They thoroughly enjoyed feeding the animals & watching their
teachers have a snake wrapped around their neck! 2nd and 3rd
Class paid a visit to Rumley’s Open Farm in Waterfall. A wonderful
day was had by all. They especially enjoyed interacting with some
of the most unusual animals! 4th, 5th and 6th class took a trip to
Kilfinane Outdoor Education Centre where they were kept as active
as possible for the day! 4th Class also won a daytrip to Lucky
Meadows Equestrian Centre in Watergrasshill and to the Lifetime
Lab. in the city. The ponies were a huge hit with all!

July gave us the summer we had all been praying for (and really
deserved!) It lifted spirits and gave the gardens a much needed
boost. We did struggle to keep up with watering and as a result a few
areas suffered, but I would rather have it that way than the continuous
grey damp that we were so used to. It has done many plants the world
of good. I have never seen our roses looking so florific for so long!
The herbaceous borders also put on a good show and are still happily
flowering away.
Fruit production has been good this year and many of our young apple
trees in the heritage orchard are set to give their first ever crop. Logan
berries are in full swing and we might even have some melons if the
sun keeps shining.
We are in the process of summer pruning our fruit trees. Apples and
pears can be pruned now to encourage fruit buds to form next year and
also to maintain shape or train the tree into a shape. There are two
periods for pruning, December/January and July/August. As a rule
winter pruning encourages growth of new shoots and summer pruning
discourages growth. We also prune stone fruits now, tipping back and
tying in new growth on our wall trained plums, peaches and nectarines.
Stone fruits should only be pruned in early spring or midsummer as
this reduces the chance of silver leaf disease. Fruit pruning is not very
complicated if you follow a few basic rules, and there are many helpful
sites on the internet with step by step guides.
Ragwort is always a big problem at this time of year. It’s the yellow
flowered plant that you see along all of the roadside verges driving into
Cork. Ragwort is a highly poisonous plant when eaten and posses a
particular threat to cattle and horses. Under the Noxious Weed Act
local authorities and landowners are legally responsible for ensuring
that the land within their control is clear of ragwort: Unfortunately due
to lack of enforcement this is not the reality. We do our bit here in the
estate to clear all ragwort every year, but as it is being left to seed
freely along our roadsides and elsewhere there is always a new stock of
seed ready to blow in.
A good tip that I can give is to plan your bulb order now. You can
probably still remember how things looked in the spring. Make a few
notes as to where you would like some extra colour in the garden, then
select bulbs that suit. Too often bulbs end up as an impulse buy that get
stuck in a corner and forgotten about. This can lead to some nice
surprises but often leads to disappointment. Bulbs, like any other plant,
have certain preferences and it pays to do a little research first.
Blarney in Bloom was a great success this year and we have already set
the date for next year as Saturday 12th of July. The garden fair
provides an opportunity for us to show the gardens to local people who
may not have visited before. We have long been seen as just the castle,
and a destination for tourists, but this has now changed. The gardens
are a feature in their own right and visitors are coming specifically to
see them. This is hugely satisfying for both myself and all of our
gardening team and volunteers who have put in such hard work over
the last few years.

Cork Middle Parish and The Coal Quay Historical
Society present the Cork Coal Quay Family
Festival 2013 on Saturday August 17th.
The festival will kick off with The Buttera and Cork Shawlies
Parade marching with the Cork Butter Exchange Band from North
Gate Bridge along North Main Street, Kyle Street to Cornmarket
Street. There they’ll meet the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Catherine Clancy,
who will officially open the festival at 12pm to the sound of
Shandon Bells chiming 'The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee'
followed by a special performance by the Butter Exchange Band.
Shortly after prayers will be said by Fr Pat McCarthy, Sts Peter &
Paul in remembrance of the deceased Coal Quay dealers and
residents of the area who have passed on after which doves will be
released.
Over the course of the afternoon Cornmarket Street will be filled
with colour and music with activities for everyone including
music, song, story, poetry, historical walking tours, exhibitions,
theatrical performances and comedy. On stage will be a packed
programme of music with MuddyLee, Karl and Blathain
performing traditional music and song, the nostalgic Cork Memory
Lane Group, Jaded, Cork Rock Choir, Redee, William Hammond
and Friends performing traditional music and Jerry Elvis.
For the children there will be face painters, clowns, circus
walkabouts, magic shows, fancy dress, balloon modelling, arts and
crafts workshops and pottery classes and the Cork City Fire
Department will be showcasing their elegant early 20th century
Fire Brigade engine along with a modern engine while on duty the
fire service will be giving talks on the history of the Fire Service in
Cork. Come along and join the fun on the good auld Coal Quay, a
treat for all the family and best of all its free. See you there!

Last year, Courtbrack Harvest Festival was
revived after a long absence and was a resounding
success. It is hoped to build on that success with
this year’s Festival, which again takes place at the
very end of August, and the first step to this was
achieved when the Festival was recognized as an
event of The Gathering 2013.
This year, another day has been added to the Festival so that
proceedings get underway on Wednesday, 28th August with a
5km Family Fun Run & Walk. This run/walk is open to
everybody and takes in a well-known walking loop around
Courtbrack, about 5 miles from Blarney Village. Registration
opens at 6pm on the 28th, and runners and walkers will leave
Courtbrack Community Centre at 7pm sharp. There is a small
entry fee of 6. per family, or 3 per individual.
On Friday night, 30th August, the ‘Come Dine With Us – Our
Gathering’ experience takes place at Courtbrack Community
Centre. Invitations have been extended to family and friends
living abroad to come home to Courtbrack and join us for the
entire Festival, and in particular this great evening, where local
people will host some of their family and friends.
On Saturday night, 31st August, meet up with friends old and
new at the Festival Barbeque in Browne's Bar, Newcastle (near
Blarney) where there will be great food and great entertainment
with Open Air Dancing, and live music from the fantastic Pacific
Blue.
The last event of the Harvest Festival, but by no means the
least, takes place on Sunday, 1st September, in the community
field in Courtbrack with an Old Time Threshing and Vintage
Display organised by Courtbrack Vintage Society. There will
also be a Country Market, Tug of War competition and Family
Fun Day, so all the family are guaranteed to be entertained!
All funds raised over the course of the Harvest Festival will go
towards the renovation of Courtbrack Community Centre, a
much-used facility in the heart of a close-knit community.

Gum Disease!
You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth
loss today, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart
disease and strokes,pregnancy problems such as low birth
weight, diabetes and respiratory disease? It may be more
serious than you think.
Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the
teeth and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar
build up on the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful
toothbrushing and flossing. Tartar forms when plaque is hardened
by minerals such as calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be
removed professionally by your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also
has a very harmful effect on the gums. Every smoker has gum
disease but some smokers are affected worse than others.
You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced.
Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be
aware of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad
breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth
starting to loosen.
What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly
and gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day
using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or
interdental toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up
and a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next
visit, why not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your
teeth clean? It could save your teeth and improve your health!

Hard to believe that the weather was good enough for church to be
held outside last month!
Ireland’s first Family CycleFest is to be held
at Millstreet Country Park on the 24th and
25th of August, encouraging families to make
the best of the remainder of the summer
holidays with their families.
The new bicycle trails launched at the 500-acre
park have been meticulously planned and
perfected, allowing pedal pushers of all ages and
abilities to view the Parks most scenic aspects
and enjoy their chosen route, leisurely or
otherwise. The trails (5kms and 10kms in length)
range from relaxed, off-road low land trails
suitable for all, to more rugged and challenging
terrain, all of which experienced cyclists will
enjoy.
Events include a Cycle Quest treasure hunt, Kids
Cycle Time Trials, High Nelly and Mountain
Bike Workshops, plus lots, lots more. The
festival will feature exciting displays of a variety
of bikes, showing the history of its progress from
the penny farthing, through to the electric bike.
Limerick based business High Nelly Bikes will
also be on hand showcasing an eclectic array of
bikes which were showcased recently on RTE’s
Nationwide. Members of the public who own a
High Nelly, a Penny Farthing or the highly
unusual Ingo bicycle are welcome to come and
display their bikes at the festival.

training programmes for Small Businesses in 2012 and 2013. The
training is provided by expert tutors and the Training Programme
takes place over 7 sessions, scheduled to suit the participants.
In addition, participants in the programme also avail of on-going
coaching and support from the Training Providers for a period of 6
months following the Training Programme.
Upon completion of the programme, you will be capable of
developing a clear strategic plan for your business. You will learn
proven real world strategies that work for small business. You will
have access to experienced business coaches who will help you
implement these strategies for your business.
The course will be held over seven sessions in a venue in Blarney
from 7am to 10am each Tuesday morning September and October,
2013 (exact dates to be confirmed but will commence on either
Tuesday 10th September or Tuesday 17th September)

Foundation have combined forces to organise a fund raising
cycle on September 29th next.

This event is suitable for all types of cyclists and a full back up service
will be available. There are a number of options open to participants as
follows;
Cycle from Ballincollig (Rugby Club) to Killarney and back, have
yourself and your bike transported to Killarney and cycle back to
Ballincollig or take part in a short ‘High Nellie’ cycle from Farran
Village (leaving at 1pm) to Ballincollig.
A €20 non refundable deposit will be required at sign in at Ballincollig
Rugby Club at 9am on the day and you are encouraged to raise €100 or
as much as possible. The ‘High Nellie’ sponsorship is just the €20.
What do you get for your money?
Fruit, water, transport, bike mechanics, lead and safety cars, full civil
defence, ambulance, medic services and a sweeper vehicle to make sure
nobody is left behind. You can also avail of a shower and a meal at the
finish. But as organisers Denis Dineen (Leukaemia Association), Daisy
Twohig and Tammy Meehan (Make a Wish Foundation) say, ‘You will be
helping to relieve children’s suffering.’

Details of the Ballinora GAA Golf Classic, which
will have Down’s SuperValu, Ballicollig as their
main sponsor once again, have been announced.
Friday 30th August is the date for your diary and
the venue is Lee Valley Golf Club. The cost for team
of three will be €180 and tee box sponsorship is
available at €100.
Speaking at the launch, Club Chairman, Pat Lane, thanked all
who supported the fundraiser in the past and especially Barry
Down of Downs SuperValu, Main Street, Ballincollig who have
come on board as main sponsor again this year.
“Ballinora GAA is committed to providing first class modern
facilities for its members and the local community at all times and
as this event is an important source of revenue, required to meet
the day to day running of the club, we appeal for support from as

63 cars turned up for the event. Thank
