KFPS business 1.4 Foreign countries 1.1 General state of affairs and preview The KFPS has members in 55 countries across all continents. These foreign members are represented by 9 delegates on the KFPS Member Council. Another channel for members to have a say in KFPS matters is the WFHO, an organisation in which all studbooks and KFPS-affiliated associations have been united. Countries with more than 100 (paying) members are: The KFPS can look back on a successful 2013. In spite of the continuing decline in member numbers and registrations, the KFPS has managed to close the financial year with a positive balance. For the coming years an investment agenda has been presented which has been approved by the members. These investments are aimed at strengthening the position of the KFPS at home and abroad. 2013 was also the year of a change in management. We said goodbye to our Chairman Cees Roozemond who passed the chairman’s gavel to Bert Wassenaar. In breeding terms we have achieved a breakthrough with the development of a DNA marking test for innate disorders. The immensely successful Stallion Inspection with its ever growing number of visitors has considerably contributed to the favourable financial position. This is in spite of the fact that in cooperation with Omrop Fryslân we have invested in broadcasting the Stallion Inspection on television and internet. In 2013 it was decided that the KFPS will continue to invest in the Stallion Inspection. We aim to attract a wider audience than the traditional (Friesian) horsey public by staging a theatre production starring the Friesian horse. The ultimate objective of this investment is to minimally realise a budget neutral Stallion Inspection. In 2014 we made a start with Faderpaard, which is set to have a follow-up in the coming years during the climax of the opening ceremony of Leeuwarden, Capital of Culture 2018. The foreign countries are another area to be invested in. The KFPS has chosen to invest predominantly in communication and the transfer of information. 2013 saw the launch of the first monthly digital newsletter in the Spanish language. The overseas associations are of great importance. The KFPS will increasingly seek to assist the overseas associations with their administration so that these associations can concentrate on the promotion and development of activities. New media play a crucial role. In 2013 we launched KFPS-TV which shows compilations of, for example, studbook events as well as pictures of stallions (Central Examination). In 2013 the KFPS also took the initiative to play a part in bringing together supply and demand by compiling a foals-for-sale list. In 2014 we will continue to expand this activity by building a horses-for-sale digital window (comparable to Marktplaats). The KFPS firmly declares that it will not be a party in any trade activity conducted via this site. 1.2 Districts and Member Council Preceded by meetings in all 13 districts we held the usual two meetings of the Member Council in 2013. The Member Council has approved the following policy-related resolutions: Spring meeting: • The district ‘outside Europe’ will have one more seat on the Member Council. • The canter will be included in the IBOP driving test. • The KFPS will introduce a subsidiary section for horses with incomplete lineages. Contrary to horses included in the main section, these horses cannot be entered for examinations, they cannot receive predicates and their offspring are banned from registration in any of the books of the main section. • From now on, those stallions who are selected for the Central Examination during the re-inspection of the Third Viewing will be evaluated by the Stallion Inspection Judges who will also advise with regard to registrations. Autumn meeting: • On the application for a stud service no service fees will be due for a mare if the registered stud services during three previous breeding seasons have not resulted in the birth of a live foal. • Performance regulations for Crown and Model predicates will be adapted. For current Preliminary Crown and Model mares the current regulations will continue to apply. New regulations for mares receiving the Preliminary Crown or Model predicate will come into effect with the start of the year 2014. From that moment all horses need to obtain a score of 77 points for ABFP and IBOP tests, with an average score of 7 for the three basic gaits. This used to be restricted to the walk and the trot. 1.3 Developments in member numbers On 31 December 2012 the number of Dutch members registered at: 6323. Compared to the year before this represents a decline of 8%. This downward trend can also be seen in foreign countries, although to a lesser extent. 15000 Foreign members Dutch members 10000 5000 0 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Member numbers Development member numbers KFPS 20000 Year 2 Phryso attachment May 2014 Number of members by country United States 1369 Denmark 326 Sweden 192 Germany 1299 United Kingdom 198 Australia 147 France 399 Canada 196 Switserland 113 Belgium 387 South Africa 105 In 2013 a new affiliated association was established in the Ukraine. Education week On Monday July 15th the ‘International Education Week’ started with 46 participants from all over the world. This is a course for Friesian horse enthusiasts from outside the Netherlands. The main part of the week was taken up by the course ‘Judging the Friesian Horse 1’, but there was plenty of time for socialising and relaxation. For most participants this was their first introduction to the course. Others could use the first part of the week to brush up their knowledge and continue with ‘Judging 3’ during the rest of the week. The Education Week was packed with nice and interesting activities that offered the participants a host of skilled and understandable explanations. Having guests from, among others, Australia, Sweden, Romania, Brazil and North America, many stories and experiences were shared between participants. 1.5 KFPS business After eight years of being Chairman of the KFPS Cees Roozemond took his farewell in 2013. At the start of his chairmanship the KFPS was going through turbulent times. His consolidating style of management has been a key factor in restoring harmony to the studbook. In his function of Chairman he has been the top figurehead of the KFPS, especially abroad. Geralt Pots has taken over Roozemond´s place on the Board while Bert Wassenaar has succeeded him as Chairman KFPS. 1.6 Young KFPS Young KFPS was established in 2009 and seeks to stimulate young people´s interest in the Friesian horse and motivate them to become involved in the sport and breeding matters. Moreover, the KFPS aims to promote the influx from Young KFPS to the various councils and committees within its organisation. This can be brought about by organising events where the focus lies on the transfer of information. In 2013 Young KFPS organised several activities: A judging competition, a health day, a driving day, visits to several breeders, shadow judging , a dressage day, and it has co-organised the Euro Friesian Cup. At the end of 2013 the Young KFPS had 131 registered members. 1.7 In memoriam Meint Tjallings Postma from Tjerkgaast died on Tuesday May 21st at the age of 75. In the 1970s, 80s and 90s he was very successful in show driving. Meint Postma was also actively involved in breeding and many of his horses put in appearances at various shows. But we also remember Meint, together with Jan Bosma, from the tributes in Thialf where he took the champions on a lap of honour in his horse-sleigh. On June 25th the life of 80-year-old Foeke van der Velde from Terwispel came to an end. He had made quite a name for himself in the world of the Friesian horse and his horses were in great demand. Many of the major breeders bought stock from him and reaped huge successes. New breeders were eager to learn from him and based their stud solely on horses from his breeding line. When it came to choosing stallions, Foeke van der Velde had a mind of his own. Looking back, his successes have captured everyone’s imagination. The seriously-ill Jan Klimstra from Westergeest died on July 5th at the age of 57. All Friesian horses born in Klimstra’s yard were given the stablename ‘fan Keatlingwier’, which is a hamlet between Driesum and Westergeest where he lived with his wife Mieneke. Jan just loved going to examinations which for him were the high-days of breeding. He had a seat on the Member Council representing breeding association Ta it Bihâld. On July 25th at the age of 77 Dr.ir. Anne Osinga died in his hometown Giekerk. After his education at the then ‘College of Agriculture’ (now Wageningen University UR), he became managing director of the newly-established training centre in Oenkerk (later merged with PTC+) in 1962. Together with ir. Kai Bouma, Osinga founded the society ‘It Fryske Hoars’ in 1977, which seeks to promote the interests of the Friesian horse and its cultural as well as historical values. In 2000, under the patronage of ‘It Fryske Hoars’, Osinga wrote the book ‘Het fokken van het Friese paard’ with the objective of promoting a better application of breeding research to Friesian horse breeding. Anne Osinga was a gifted speaker, with his characteristic style and humorous undertone. 3 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 2. Staff 2.1 Staff changes Office There were no major changes in staff in 2013. Due to some minor changes the number of FTEs has de-creased slightly. This has resulted in a total of 8,2 FTEs for 2013. The way in which the number of FTEs is calculated is no longer based on the number of working days per week but instead on the total number of working hours per week. This is reflected in the following diagram: The chart reveals that the benefits are slightly on the increase. Thanks to the implementation of economy measures there is a decline in costs. Further details on benefits and costs are listed under the heading profit-and-loss account. In the past year the net result of financial credits and debits went down in comparison to previous years due to a less favourable revenue from security stocks and lower interest rates on savings accounts. Owing to outstanding results in previous years the KFPS has sufficient buffer capacity. With its own capital amounting to €2,013,464 the society can be considered as healthy. The chart below reflects an overview of the solvability of the society in previous years: Solvability 47% Number of FTE’s 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 46% 8,2 8,4 9,6 9,8 10,3 9,9 9,9 45% 44% 43% Organisation chart Underneath you will see the organisation chart of the KFPS. The KFPS has a solvability of 41,1%. Therefore the liquidity ratio of the Studbook can be listed as excellent. 3.3 Details annual account 2013 Finance manager/HRM Communications / PR Nynke Bakker Marijke Akkerman Balance sheet The chart below gives a concise overview of the balance from the annual account 2012: x € 1.000 31.12.2013 31.12.2012 x € 1.000 ACTIVE Executive secretary & Assistant studbook registration Eveline van Kooten Finance assistant Reception/ Assistant member adm. The temporary enlargement of incidental debits has been used so that an extra amount of €10,298 has been withdrawn for those investments. The accounts receivable have dropped again due to downsizing the claim concerning the 2010 agreement on fines for exceeding service limitations. The short-term debts have risen due to an increase in advanced invoicing of sums and an increase of debts to suppliers and business loans. Profit-and-loss account For more details on benefits and costs we would like to refer to the annual account 2013 and the concise report in the attachments to the Phryso of May 2014. 3. Financial statements 3.1 General Underneath we will only mention a limited number of subjects from the KFPS financial report. For a proper overview of the full financial state of affairs of the KFPS we refer you to the annual account 2013 (to be obtained via [email protected]) For 2013 the KFPS had factored in a small deficit of €10,000. The KFPS has succeeded in keeping well within the budget with a final positive result of €33,148. The chart below presents an overview of basic statistics of the KFPS in recent years: Financial figures (€ x 1.000) 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 Benefits 2.390 2.366 2.543 2.408 2.890 2.836 3.370 Costs 2.434 2.495 2.619 2.672 2.794 2.611 2.500 Financial credits and debits 77 123 92 89 143 61 61 Net result 33 6- 16 175- 239 286 931 Own capital 2.013 2.010 2.016 2.000 2.176 1.938 1.652 Phryso attachment May 2014 Benefits and costs (excl. financial credits and debits) € x 1.000 3.2 Financial situation 4 The diagram below reflects the development of benefits and costs (excl. financial credits and debits) of the society in recent years: 3,500 3,250 3,000 2,750 2,500 2,250 2,000 1,750 1,500 1,250 1,000 750 500 250 - Benefits 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 Costs 2007 Years 5 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 We will briefly report on some details of the profit-and-loss account. Benefits A positive development is the small increase in total benefits in spite of adverse economic conditions. Contributions from sponsors and the number of tickets sold for the Stallion Inspection have gone up considerably. The sales of promotional materials are also going up. Breeding proceeds have increased, but these are counteracted by corresponding breeding expenses. The other items show a decline which is mainly caused by the decrease in member numbers, stud services, registered foals and inspected horses. The number of Dutch members is on the decline and the same applies to some of the foreign countries although some overseas countries are showing some growth. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 4.5 Examinations There were 13 breeding days in 2013, including the breeding days on Ameland and Terschelling and the one in Vrouwenpolder. Five breeding days included a pre-examination. In the Netherlands were 10 studbook examinations and 8 foal examinations. The number of examination days in foreign countries totalled 65. Taking all categories into account, the number of examinations was 7% down in 2013. The decline can be explained by the downward trend in services and registered foals since 2003. The drop in 2013, however, is only half of the reduction as seen in 2012. Netherlands 2013 Foals Costs With the exception of breeding costs and debits all entries show a decline. Breeding costs have risen because more descendants have taken part in progeny testing. Also the settlement of the Vitens Opfokproject 2012 was postponed until 2013. Debits have risen because of the previously mentioned extra withdrawal on 2013 investments. Economy measures have been put in place by, for instance, relocating the First Viewing to Drachten and after consultation with the foreign associations the replacement of the annual international Phryso by a monthly digital newsletter. These economy measures had been budgeted for 2014 but were already implemented in 2013. A special decrease in costs has been realised because of the release of accumulated days off from previous years which has led to a reduction in staff expenses. 3.4 Long-range estimate The expectations for the coming years are less favourable due to a larger reduction in admission fees and judging proceeds caused by the decline in the number of services from 2010 onwards. In 2014 more financial cuts were communicated but there will also be room for investments regarding growth, new markets and promotion in foreign countries as well as the support of foreign associations. We will also carry on with a programme for more breeding research. Costs for breeding research can be financed with funds from the allocated reserves. For this purpose an amount of €30,000 was used in 2013. It is important to replenish the allocated reserves and considering the excellent financial situation of the KFPS this is no problem. Because the Friesland Bank has closed down the KFPS has been in touch with several other banks and the decision has been made to place part of the liquid assets with the Rabobank. The securities and a small part of the savings account have been placed with the ABNAmro Bank. This transition was initiated end 2013 and was completed early 2014. During the General Meeting of November 22nd 2013 the investment mandate was increased from €300,000 to €500,000. Just like last year the percentage of foals with a first premium has gone up again and added up to 18%, an increase of nearly 1½%. The Star percentage of 3-year-old mares in 2013 was the same as in 2012, exactly 35%. This ties in com-pletely with the selection policy for mares, which has been fixed at 35%. On the assumption that there is a gradual increase in quality, this means that each year will see a raise in standards. Inspection results foals: Year First premium Third premium No premium 4. The most important addition to the breeding programme of 2013 is that horses will receive scores for 18 characteristics during ABFP tests and Central Examinations. This aspect of the breeding and selection policy should receive more attention. The analysis of several years of data collection should come up with a (limited) number of personality characteristics. The next step is to compile a breeding-value map for individual stallions that gives insight into how these characteristics are passed on. difference Second premium mares geldings Year Studbook Star Crown Model 2013 782 420 50 23 2012 830 447 51 22 Gelding Book stallions Star Star 84 62 130 106 54 145 4.7 Preferent and Performance 4.2 Breeding and research In 2013 there was a significant breakthrough in DNA research into hereditary disorders. In a joint effort of the Wageningen University and the Diergeneeskundige Faculteit (Veterinary College) a DNA marking test has been developed for the disorders dwarfism and hydrocephaly. The tests will be made available to the members in 2014. The tests will not be used in the selection policy for mares and stallions but strictly to eliminate risky matches. The aim is to develop DNA tests for several disorders. Breeding research is also underway to establish life expectancy in Friesian horses and research for a better tool to determine semen quality (morphology) commenced in 2013. Preferent and Performance predicates are awarded to mares with good-quality offspring with respect to exterior or sport respectively. In 2013 50 mares became Preferent, the same number as in 2012. As many as 5 mares received the Performance predicate. Quite remarkably there are three stallion dams among these five: Olcha (Sape 381), Jeldau (Haitse 425 and Wylster 463) and Hanneke (Anders 451). The names of the mares are: Performance mares Olcha Model Preferent Prestatie Feitse 293 F. v.d. Velde, Terwispel Jeldau fan ‘e Wigêri Model Preferent Prestatie Rypke 321 G. v.d. Compared to 2012 this number has again dropped by over 400 but this is half the reduction as seen in previous years. Tatjana P. Ster Preferent Prestatie Djurre 284 K.D. Postma, Tjerkgaast Imma Ster Preferent Prestatie Obe 314 A. Zwaagman, Huins 4.4 Registered foals 4.8 Performance tests In 2013 3461 births were reported. From these foals 3026 were registered (chipped) in 2013. Some of the remaining foals (abroad) will be chipped and registered in 2013. Over 94% of the registered foals have been registered in the main section. The number of registrations in the B-books are as follows: B-Book I: 82; B-Book II: 107; D-Book: 31. The KFPS differentiates between three performance tests that together provide information about the sport aptitude of young horses: the Central Examination, the ABFP test and the IBOP test. The evaluation scores from performance tests play an important role with respect to the breeding programme, in the selection of stallions and when awarding predicates. 6 Phryso attachment May 2014 7 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 4.8.1 ABFP tests From the age of three onwards, stallions, geldings and mares are eligible for taking part in ABFP tests. During an ABFP test horses will be trained under saddle and in-harness for a period of seven weeks and will be evaluated in both disciplines. The evaluation results are taken into account for the declaration of permanent Crown or Model. The largest number of ABFP tests is carried out as part of progeny testing for approved stallions. In each stallion’s sixth stud season 20 descendants will be selected for progeny testing. 142 ABFP tests were completed in 2013. The tests are organised by WB-Stables in Warga. 4.8.2 IBOP tests Stallions, geldings and mares can be entered for IBOP tests from the age of four onwards. The horses can be evaluated in the disciplines riding horse, driving horse or showdriving horse. The results play an important role for the declaration of permanent Crown or Model predicates. The standard is (same as the ABFP test) set at a total score of 77 points averaging a 7 for the basic gaits. 288 IBOP tests were completed in 2013: 48 driving tests, 235 riding tests and 5 showdriving tests. In all, the number of tests has increased by 60 compared to last year. 4.9 Central Examination In 2013, the spring examination (for 4-year-old and older stallions) was discontinued and from now on the Central Examination will only take place in the autumn. The preparatory phase which consists of a three-day instruction course was first introduced in 2012 and after positive feedback has been extended into 2013. Under the supervision of instructors Susan Bouwman and Johan Hamminga, the stallions’ trainers receive instructions about how to give their horse the best possible training. A change introduced in 2013 means that the stallion jury advises the owner whether or not the horse should be entered for the examination. In the end, 16 stallions were entered for the autumn Central Examination out of which five have been registered in the Studbook: Fonger 478 (Olgert 445 x Doeke 287) Gerben 479 (Doaitsen 420 x Sape 381) Hessel 480 (Norbert 444 x Jelke 367) Hette 481 (Norbert 444 x Rindert 406) Haike 482 (Arjen 417 x Lute 304) The Central Examination that took place on the DG-Bar Ranch in California, USA, resulted in the registration of the following three stallions: Alert 475 (Jasper 366 x Hearke 254) Bene 476 (Doaitsen 420 x Leffert 306) Date 477 (Mintse 384 x Tjitte 333) 4.10 Progeny tests In 2013, eight stallions completed the Progeny Test. All eight stallions can keep their breeding license in 2013. Progeny testing contains data from the registration of offspring, examination results and the results of the 20 descendants that completed the ABFP test. The ABFP test defines the sport aptitude and the character of offspring. Sport The advancement of the Friesian horse in the sport is one of the core activities of the KFPS. More and more Friesian horses are entered in competition classes of various disciplines and also in the Light Tour level of dressage they are seen in increasing numbers. At the Dutch Championships the number of Friesians keeps going up both in elementary as well as in national level classes. 5.1 Sport predicates In 2013, the following predicates were obtained: Dressage: 84 Driving dressage: 15 Showdriving: 3 5.2 Young Friesian horses with showdriving/dressage aptitude: During the summer season several breeding chapters organise competitions for young Friesian horses with the objective to test their aptitude for dressage and showdriving. The competitions for dressage aptitude are open to all 4, 5 and 6-year-old horses that have been registered with the KFPS. There are four categories: a category for 4-year-old mares, one for 5 and 6-year-old mares, one category for 4-year-old stallions/geldings and a category for 5 and 6-year-old stallions/geldings (breeding stallions are excluded). In 2013 the competitions for showdriving aptitude were open to all 3, 4 and 5-year-old horses that have been registered with the KFPS. There are two categories: one for mares and one for geldings/stallions (breeding stallions are excluded). The organisation is in the hands of the board of the organising breeding chapter. The participating countries are the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Results of these competitions can be found under Events (Central Examination). 5.3 Competitions Several competitions are organised specifically for Friesian horses. Underneath we will give a short account of the largest competitions. Post Kogeko KFPS Dressage Championship Each year there is a national dressage championship for Friesian horses. The breeding chapters all organise several pre-selection competitions where selections will take place for taking part in the finals in Kootwijk in September. There are categories from national levels (B to ZZ-Light) up to the Light Tour. The champions: B level Inge Heesakkers with Cora van de Houtbroek (Doaitsen 420) L1 level Harmina Holwerda with Franke PJ (Beart 411) L2 level Judith Pietersen with Chabring AJ (Tsjabring 429) M1 level Marijke Folmer with Bartele 472 (Onne 376) M2 level Leonie Evink with Wylster 463 (Rindert 406) Z1 level Judith Pietersen with Tsjalle 454 (Mintse 384) Z2 level Esther Liano with Pattaconk’s Pluto (Wierd 409) ZZ-Licht level Esther Liano with Ebele fan Groenestein (Winand 405) www.dressuurkampioenschapfrieschpaard.nl KFPS Variso Indoor competition 2012-2013 Each year there are indoor competitions for the disciplines dressage and driving, the KFPS Variso Indoor competition. This competition has its finals in Sonnega in early spring. The drivers will compete for the ‘Tinnen Menner’ and the dressage riders for the ‘Zilveren Zweep’ (2). In 2013, the ‘Tinnen Menner’ was for Koerina Dijkstra (B Champion) with her Maaike Matsje fan ‘e Ies (Sape 381) who had the best result in the finals. The winners of the ‘Zilveren Zweep’ 2013 were Marije Verbeek (B dressage) with Anouk Jildou (Tietse 428) and Bobbie Ydema (M2 dressage) with Up to Date’s Ulkje (Beart 411). This competition has been made possible by Stud Bommelsteyn in Joure and De Nieuwe Heuvel in Lunteren. www.kfps-indoorcompetitie.nl * preliminary approval on the basis of progeny testing (less than 40 inspected descendants) After their preliminary approval in 2012, stallions Jesse 435 and Jense 432 were re-inspected in 2013. This resulted in a permanent approval for Jesse 435. Jense 432 will be re-inspected in 2014. 4.11 Stallion statistics Stallions Sjaard 320, Ritse 322, Arjen 417 and Harmen 424 died in 2013. 4.12 Jury policy To advance jury policy several days have been organised to promote schooling and uniformity. These days take place under the supervision of the inspectors. The drop in the number of examinations calls for a smaller pool of judges. The following members of the jury left towards the end of 2013: F. Holtrop, L. van Hout, M. Moosen, W.J.H. Oskam and D.M. Soetens. In 2013 Luciel Ellens and Sabien Zwaga were appointed prospective inspector. 8 Phryso attachment May 2014 KFPS Outdoor Driving Competition This competition was initiated in 2007 and comprises six competitions in the months of June, July and August. Events Each year the KFPS organises a large number of studbook examinations but two are the milestones on the examination calendar. These two events, the Central Inspection and the Stallion Inspection, last several days and each year are drawing the crowds in by the thousands from home and abroad. 6.1 Stallion Inspection 2013 6.1.1 Inspection young stallions The Second Viewing of the young stallions took place on Thursday January 10th. From the 79 stallions that had been selected in Ermelo during the First Viewing, 65 made their way to Leeuwarden after semen and X-ray tests. In the end 20 stallions remained who received the much-coveted invitation to the Central Examination. 6.1.2 Clinic afternoon The mixed programme of clinics during the Stallion Inspection had been organised in cooperation with students from the ‘Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein’ in Wageningen. The clinics were held in the main arena and warm-up ring as well as in some rooms of the WTC Hotel. Louise Hompe’s very popular clinic ‘Judging the Friesian horse put into practice’ always takes place in the main arena. Ronald Aalders gave an instructive workshop about shoeing Friesian horses and equine physiotherapist Karin Baas explained how she can help improve the sport performances of Friesian horses. Cally Matherly’s photography clinic and ECO-coach Tjalling van den Berg’s clinic on the physical and mental aspects of the sport both attracted a great deal of attention. Under supervision of Jolanda Schreuder, Annika Palm demonstrated how it is even possible for paraplegic people to ride on horseback. The clinics on embryo transfer and export regulations were also well-attended. By now a tradition, the afternoon was concluded with an interactive clinic whereby visitors were given the opportunity to get into the driver’s seat to tackle a cones’ course. 6.1.3 Show evening with an international character On Friday evening after the Third Viewing the main arena became the scene of a fantastic show with horses, music – modern as well as traditional Friesian music - variation, sensation and many showdriving talents. This year not all the acts came from the Netherlands. In an inspiring and moving performance, Swedish rider Annika Palm rode a freestyle to music. What made this presentation so special is the fact that Annika had suffered severe spinal cord injuries after falling from a horse 20 years ago. The Romanian tenor Vlad Mirita entertained the fully-packed WTC by singing happily at the top of his voice. There was a dazzling Pas de Deux at ZZ Light level, a showdriving class and the traditional parade of champions. The studbook stallions also got a chance to put in an appearance and on special delivery of course the forever spectacular Hungarian Post. The end of the show evening was highlighted by four Friesian dressage stallions who in combination with four Honorary Class showdriving horses in front of the sjees staged an absolutely impressive final act. 6.1.4 Horse of the Year The great surprise of the show evening was the presentation of the ‘Horse of the Year 2012’. Susan Bouwman-Wind was ready for the honouring of the champions but was asked to come forward to receive the trophy ‘Horse of the Year 2012’ with her Egberdina’s Tjardo. Horse lovers and the jury panel decide among them who will be awarded the title ‘Horse of the Year’. In 2012 the very successful Tjardo. (Time 398) was owned by Gerrit Soepenberg from Den Ham. ANNUAL REPORT 2013 6.2 Central Inspection Because there were several equestrian events in the ‘Fries Congres Centrum’ te Drachten in September, it was financially feasible to take the Central Inspection indoors again after one outdoor edition. Friday September 13th was set aside for the sport and youngsters (foals, yearlings and 2-year-olds). There were up to 24 colts and 17 fillies showing off in the outdoor arena of the FCD. For the first time there were two Hippiade championships on the afternoon programme: the regional Ladies’ Class Championship won by Margé Emmens with Topgazon Sam E (Ulbert 390) and the regional Two-In-Hand Championship which was won by Maaike de Jong with the Heinse 354 sons Idse and Hielke. This day also put dressage aptitude in the spotlights with 54 combinations giving their all to qualify for the finals. Saturday September 14th was a jam-packed and long examination day. Today the grounds belonged to the horses entered for inspections with a splendid championship as the final piece. The examinations yielded 42 new (preliminary) Crown mares and 10 new Model mares. The Central Inspection will always mark a wonderful end to the inspection season in the Netherlands. On the whole, the quality was outstanding and with Janneke B the examination had a ‘surprising ending’. A 2-year-old mare who peaked at the right moment. At the bottom of this success are four first premium foals, three of them being descendants from their home-bred stallion Wytse 462’s first crop. 6.1.6 Inspection Studbook stallions As tradition has it, Saturday January 12th 2013 the programme kicks off with the older stallions. The established stallions once again received a deafening applause from the audience. Next was the presentation of the young stallions that have been selected for the Central Examination. After the break came the studbook stallions who have not yet been approved on offspring. In between a beautiful film was shown about Friesian horses living in Central America´s Costa Rica. Later in the programme there was a moment to honour those people who have given much of their time and effort to serve the KFPS. Douwe Willemsma, Tjalling Rollema and Marten Pelleboer received the golden pin for their admirable commitment to the Board of the KFPS out of the hands of Chairman Cees Roozemond. The final piece of the Stallion Inspection was the magnificent championship. For the second time running the title for the older stallions was awarded to Beart 411 and the reserve title was for his sire Jasper 366. Champion of the younger stallions was Norbert 444 with Tsjalle 454 being the runner-up. In a fully-packed WTC it was now time for the overall championship. Everybody went crazy when the winner of the overall championship 2013 was announced. Promotion & Communication Attachment I: Hierarchy of the KFPS 7.1 Promotion The KFPS has several bodies, there are policymaking bodies, advisory and executive bodies and external committees. Underneath is a list of all committees and councils that play a role within the KFPS. The Governing Board has a policymaking function and the following persons have a seat on the Board: 7.1.1 Webshop and merchandise Promotional merchandise of the KFPS can be ordered online via our webshop. Online sales via the web-shop were launched at the end of 2012. This was further developed in 2013 and several articles have been added to the list. The renewed house style is certainly contributing to the promotion of the Friesian horse. Outer clothing, horse items and educational books can be ordered online on our site www.kfps.nl 7.1.2 Promotion stand KFPS In 2013 the PR team proudly represented the KFPS at the following events: Stallion Inspection in Leeuwarden, Horse Event in Deurne, Central Inspection in Drachten, Finals KFPS Post Kogeko Dressage Championship in Kootwijk and the breeding days in Kootwijk, Helden-Panningen, Garijp, Drachten, Hilvarenbeek, Ameland, Oudkarspel, Hoorn (Terschelling), Assen, Ambt-Delden, Oldeholtpade and Blauwhuis. The absolute highlight for the PR team is the Stallion Inspection. The entire event is an enormous boost for the Friesian horse but it also creates a great opportunity for the PR stand because a major part of its turnover on merchandise is generated during these days. Governing Board KFPS until November 22nd 2013 Cees Roozemond Bergen Chairman Bert Wassenaar Amstelveen Vice Chairman Peter Bazuijnen Diever Treasurer Pieter Tuinman Boksum Secretary Pascale Drijfhout Jistrum General Board Member Governing Board KFPS starting November 22nd 2013 Bert Wassenaar Amstelveen Chairman Pieter Tuinman Boksum Vice Chairman and Secretary Peter Bazuijnen Diever Treasurer Geralt Pots Nuis General Board Member Pascale Drijfhout Jistrum General Board Member Schedule of outgoing members, autumn meeting 7.1.3 Royal Friesian Club The Royal Friesian Club was founded in 2013. The objective of the Royal Friesian Club is to encourage the mutual transfer of knowledge between Friesian horse enthusiasts. Twice a year they meet to discuss a wide range of subjects centred around the Friesian horse. Moreover, the Royal Friesian Club strives to produce a positive financial balance each year, which will enable them to provide a sum of money which can then be used to support a specific cause every year. During their first meeting CdK (Royal Commissioner) of Friesland, Mr J.J. Jorritsma together with then Chairman KFPS Mr C. Roozemond officially opened the Stallion Inspection 2013. On October 11th 2013 the Club visited Stalhouderij de Zadelhoff in Breukelen where drs. C. van Zadelhoff gave a remarkably fascinating presentation about his business DTZ Zadelhoff and his passion ‘The Friesian Horse’. 7.2 Communication 7.2.1 Phryso and newsletters In 2013 Sanoma appointed Ellen Franke as editor/coordinator. A team of editorial staff and the KFPS each month produce the Dutch Phryso and two digital newsletters. The highlights of the Phryso are translated into English and Spanish and sent to the KFPS members. The first edition of the Spanish newsletter appeared in June and both newsletters are distributed on a monthly basis. Several specials were added to the Phryso in 2013. An extra long breeding special was published in March and the September issue was packed with information about the breeding days. On four occasions the Phryso was published with an extra attachment: Stallion information, Annual report, and 2x General Meeting addendum (spring and autumn). 7.2.2 Website Current affairs are briefly communicated on the KFPS website. Inspection and test results are put online as quickly as possible and followed up with a twitter alert. The site is continually updated with current news and all events are listed on the calendar. On MijnKFPS (members only), horses can be entered for examinations, foals can be registered and it offers a host of horse-related information. In the course of 2013 the following additions were put in place: Mijn facturen: this is the portal where you can view your invoices online. On the website (Dutch and English) the library is continually updated with the most important articles of the Phryso. It is possible to consult articles of up to four years ago via the categories : General, Breeding, Events, Veterinary, Sport and Welfare. 7.2.3 Social media In 2011 the KFPS started to publicise news items and events via social media (twitter). This was followed up in 2012 with the launch of our own Facebook page. This medium reaches a vast public and positive reactions are coming in from all over the world and since then it has grown enormously. Because Facebook is a predominantly English platform the KFPS has chosen to communicate in English. On YouTube channel the KFPS has launched KFPS.tv. The first film footage of the youngest crop of stallions from the autumn inspection has been distributed via this channel. This too is communicated in several languages.
