Inspite of many disasters, a ship reaches the shore by relying on the anchor, even we can cross the hurdles in our life and reach the destination, if we believe in ourself. Remember, the darkest hour is only just before the dawn. Life is to live in a beautiful way so Never, ever give up and Keep going ahead of yourself. BANDWAGON - Coup De Grâce T he Valediction of the various activities for the year 2007-08 came to an end on 28th March 2008. The Valedictory Function was presided over by Thiru. K. Ganesan, I.A.S., Secy. to Govt., Higher Education Dept., Govt. of Tamilnadu. The College Magazine for the year 2007-08 was released by the Chief Guest. The First copy was received by the Hon. Secy. The Chief Guest later distributed prizes to the students who accomplished themselves meritoriously in academics. Following the prize distribution, the Principal dissolved the Students’ Council. Ms. Sneha, the outgoing President of the Students’ Council proposed the vote of thanks. She expressed her experience as a fulfilled dream. Thiru K. Ganesan, IAS, Secy. to Govt, Higher Education Dept, Govt. of Tamilnadu releases the College Magazine - 2007-08 1 GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN BLESSING CEREMONY- The Genesis O n 12th June, 2008 heralded a fresh beginning for the first year students of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College. Rev. Fr. P. Christie, Director, Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) was the Chief Guest. The occasion began in a solemn manner by invoking the blessings of the Almighty and Holy Saints. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid and the Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi greeted and blessed the freshers with realm. The Chief Guest insisted the students on the need for skill based education and highlighted how perceptions about India have changed tremendously due to the competence of the Indians. The freshers were received with bouquet of love by the senior students. T he Investiture Ceremony for the installation of the Student’s Council for the year 2008-09 was unfurled in our college on 12th June 2008. The Chief guest of the occasion was Smt. Kakarla Usha, I.A.S., District Collector, Chennai. In her special address, Smt. Kakarla Usha engraved the various aspects of success. The Principal Dr. M.K. Kakarla Usha, I.A.S., District Collector, Chennai with the Principal 2 YBER 2008’, an Intra-collegiate Computer/IT FEST was organized on 29th July 2008 by the Department of Computer Science, Day and Evening Stream. The Fest was inaugurated by Shri. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, (CTS) Chennai. He excavated the need for components like Analytical thinking, communication, positive thoughts, multi-cultural awareness and networking ability to surmount in the field of technology. A number of On-stage and Off-stage events were conducted. The events included Info quench, Speko, Slide blends, Smart markers, Bug fix and Pick N Stick. The MCA Dept., won the maximum number of prizes. Shri. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), inaugurates CYBER 2008-IT Fest GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN INNOVA – Elan Sagacity A n Intra-Collegiate Management festival, INNOVA 2008 was organized on 1st August 2008. Shri. Amlan Ray, Dean, Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), flagged off the event. He emphasized the Indian’s Economic progress and threw light on the innumerable opportunities available in today’s market. A number of On-stage and Off-stage events were held to mark the occasion. The events counted like Corpo ramp, Brain Bashers, Stress ‘E’ Mess, Management Inscription, Corporate Mela and Management Hodge-podge. Final year students of BBA won the maximum number of prizes. INDEPENDENCE DAY – Esprit De Corps T he 61st Independence Day was charged with patriotic ambience. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid unfurled the National Flag. The Principal, Dr. M.K. Malathi invoked the youngsters to sow their innovative adversity and to reap the harvest of better India. There were dances and speeches to spread the fragrance of liberty. The Principal Dr. M.K. Sundara Rajan, Chairman & Mg, Director, Indian Bank at TALENTIA 2008 - Intra Collegiate Commerce festival he Department of Mathematics blowed their trumphet for Inter-Collegiate fest-eve on 11th August 2008. Prof. Dr.A. Avudainayagam, Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT, Madras) broke the ice. He cited real-life examples to highlight the employment and usage of Mathematics life. Students from 25 colleges participated in various On-stage and Off-stage events. T ALENTIA ’08, an Intra Collegiate Commerce festival was held on 5th August 2008. Shri.M.S. Sundara Rajan, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Bank, was the Chief Guest. He delineated the growth and achievements of the banking industry and focused on the scope available to the youth in this booming economy. They conducted On-stage events like PaperPresentation, Naukri.com, Take-off, Act out and Rock N Talk. The Department of Commerce (Day) clinched the shield. Overall Shield Winners, K.C.S. Kasi Nadar College seen with the Principal @ DAMORS 2008 3 GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN PARYUSHAN PARVA CELEBRATIONS – Vertex Divine P aryushan Parva was celebrated in the college on 26th August 2008. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid and the Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi spoke of the significance of the eight days festival and emphasized the need to inculcate moral virtues like humility and purity which Jainism spreads. This was followed by a number of cultural programmes like devotional dance, bhajans, speeches and songs. THEATRE EXTRAVAGANZA T he GSS Theatre Club organized a “Workshop on Theatre” on 30th July 2008. Mr. Sunil, Co-Managing Partner, EVAM conducted the workshop for a group of 35 Theatre Club members. The workshop commenced with a few warm-up exercises and then he detailed the various aspects of life as theatre. He demonstrated a few gestures and motivated the participants to emulate him. Stories were enacted and innovative ideas of gesticulations were presented to the participants. Mr. Sunil, Co-Mg. Partner, EVAM, Stepped out arduously at GSS Theatre Club ZEALITT – Stentorian Manoeuvre T he Department of English organized an Inter- Collegiate literary feast ZEALITT on 9th September, 2008. It was inaugurated by Mrs. Geetha Doctor, Journalist and Writer. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid and the Principal Dr.M.K. Malathi, addressed the vivacious gathering. Mrs. Geetha Doctor declaimed the greatness of Jainism and the inimitable contributions made 4 by the Jains in different walks of life and literature. Students from about 20 city colleges participated in the events like Dumb Charades, Color Splash, Rock N Roll, Word Hunt and Spell Bee. Eminent Professionals from various forums, Theatre groups and Entertainment Media made it an explicable day. MUTHAMIZH VIZHA – Relic Exaltation M uthamizh Vizha, an Inter- Collegiate festival was organized by the Tamil Department on 10th September, 2008. Thiru. Seeman, Cine Director inaugurated the function and enlightened the audience with his meticulous speech. Participants from various city colleges took part in the events like Street Play, Singing and Oratorical contest. CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF ARIGNAR ANNA – Adroit Flabbergast Renowned Poetess Mrs. Tamilachi Thangapandian speaks @ the Centenary Celebration of Arignar Anna T he Tamil Pavai Mandram organized several events in Commemoration of Centenary Celebration of Arignar Anna on 17th October 2008. It was presided over by Popular Poet, Mrs. Tamilachi Thangapandian. In her anecdote filled address, she motivated the youngsters to follow the path of social reformers like Arignar Anna & Dr. Ambedhkar. She also cited a number of poetical lines to highlight the effervescence of the Tamil Language. Events like Oratorical, Essay Competitions were conducted and prizes were distributed to the winners. GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN LIBFEST – Biblophile Gaiety L IBFEST 2008, an Intra-Collegiate library festival was held on 19th September, 2008. It was inaugurated by Dr. K. Balu, Director, University Library, Anna University. The Hon. Secretary and the Principal spoke on the occasion on the need for inculcating the reading habit among students. Dr. K. Balu encouraged the students to consider library as ‘Mother’ and to be transformed in the world of books. He hailed books as the best companion of all times and all occasions. There was an On-stage event, Paper Presentation by students of all disciplines. The Chief Guest adjudged the event and distributed the prizes to the winners of the various events. It included events like Mix and Max, Vocabulary test and Short Story Writing. hard work, perseverance, talent acquisition and capacity-building. He exhorted that every youngster must have a role model, a guide to reach heights of success. A number of On-Stage and Off-Stage events were held throughout the day which included Product Launch, Paper Presentation and Debate. The events were adjudged by reputed Professionals. Balu, Director, University Library, Anna University @ LIBFEST Book Exhibition COMFEST – Enrapture Surmount In her valedictory address, the Chief Guest stated Entrepreneur must plan in starting a new business to find the exit route and gave hints for starting a new business. She distributed the prizes to the winners of the various events. The Rolling Shield was bagged by M.O.P. Vaishnav College (Eve). SIFE – Revelation of Excellence S he Department of Commerce organized COMFEST on 11th September 2008. COMFEST 2008 was inaugurated by Dr. R. Velu, I.A.S., Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Railways, Govt. of India. He spoke of the importance of tudent in Free Enterprise was launched in our college on 11th July 2008. The Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi unwrapped the pack of SIFE. This was followed by a formal presentation of SIFE by Ms. Malathi Kembhav, Country Director, SIFE. The principal Dr. M.K. Malathi inaugurated the programme. This was followed by a number of events staged by the enthusiastic students of the first year. The events included dances, songs, adaptune and monoacting. The judges crowned Bhuvaneswari of I B.Com.. (Eve) as ‘Ms. Srujan 2008’. Thiru. A. Velliangiri, Deputy Mg Director (TNPL Ltd,) @ CYNOSURE 2008 (also seen) Hon. Secy and the Principal T he Intra-Collegiate Commerce (Eve) festival CYNOSURE 2008 was inaugurated by Thiru. A. Velliangiri, Deputy Managing Director, Tamilnadu Newsprint & Papers Ltd (TNPL Ltd,) on 26th September 2008. He comprehended for the need to have benchmarking, pro-activeness and knowledge of basics to achieve success in any endeavour. He insisted all organizations to be customer-centric to accomplish their goal. A number of On-stage and Off-Stage events like Situational Analysis, Product Launch, Model Designing, Logo Designing and Buzz Quiz were held. Ms. N. Rinky, III B.Com.. (Eve) was crowned Miss Cynosure 2008. KARISHMA - Clarion Waveband T he Department of Hindi organized KARISHMA – an InterCollegiate Hindi Literary Competition on 8th August 2008. Shri. Girish N. Pande, Commissioner of Income Tax, opened the veil and emphasized the importance of the Hindi language. The events like Bhashan, Indra Dhanush, Laghu Katha Lekhan, Kavita Lekhan and Lok Nruthya evoked a tremendous response. The winners are from M.O.P. Vaishnav, SDNB Vaishnav, Anna Adarsh, Valliammal, DBHP Sabha and Women’s Christian College. Shri. Girish N. Pande, Commissioner of Income Tax, @ KARISHMA 2008 6 A vivacious crowd @ SRUJAN 2008 EXTENSION SERVICE CELL S ocial Service League and Youth Red Cross unit are the two dynamic extension service cells functioning in our college. Their prime factor is to bring an awareness among the students to the social realities and to inculcate human values in them. It organizes special lectures by prominent personalities to create legal, social, health and environmental awareness among students. NSS – Heal The World T he Inaugural function of NSS activities for the year 200809 was held on 7th August 2008. It was inaugurated with an Orientation Programme by Dr. G. Chellathurai, State Liaison Officer, Tamil Nadu NSS Cell accompanied by Dr. Raja Hussain, NSS Co-Ordinator, University of Madras. The Hon.Secretary and the Principal graced the occasion. Dr. G.Chellathurai sketched the genial qualities of Hardwork, Self-Respect, Involvement and Commitment, Humility and Help at the right time reflecting the motto of NSS as “Not me, But You”. GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN Around 50 NSS Volunteers actively participated to clean the Marina beach for “Environment Awareness Campaign” organized by University of Madras. An Exclusive Visit by the III B.Sc.. (CS) to Old Age Home – “Home Happy Home” had been organized on 1st September 2008. A One Day Workshop on Community Outreach & Extension Service Programmes was organized by Loyola College on 2nd September 2008. Dr. G. Chellathurai, State Liaison Officer, Dr. Raja Hussain, NSS Co-Ordinator, University of Madras, @ NSS Orientation Programme World Literacy Day – Leave A Trail A special Programme on Cancer Awareness was organized on 24th September 2008. Shri. C.Sen Gupta, Programme Officer & Co-ordinator of Cancer Aid Society addressed the NSS students. The NSS volunteers planted the saplings at Island Grounds. I n Commemoration of World Literacy Day, the NSS Unit of our college conducted various competitions at Hindu Union Higher Secondary School on 8th September 2008. This is conducted mainly to spread the fragrance of education that reaches beyond the educational campus and to create the leaders of future. The events like singing and drawing competitions were conducted and the winners were awarded with prizes and certificates. NSS Volunteers at the Aged Service Centre YOUTH RED CROSS – The Blooming Nightingales T The Hindu Union Govt School Boys actively participated in the competitions conducted by the NSS Unit – WORLD LITERACY DAY Mass Educational Trust – Rivers In The Desert T he NSS Unit of our College made an exclusive visit to Home for Aged and Children-the Mass Educational Trust. The NSS Volunteers presented entertainment programmes for the children and conducted activities for the inmates in the trust. They contributed fruits, biscuits, towels and provisions to Inmates. he YRC unit conducted an Orientation Programme on 7th August’08 that encompassed the Mission, Emblem, Principles, Programmes and Activities of IRC. The students of YRC participated in the Geneva Convention Competitions conducted by IRC on 12th August 2008. OP Crowd Regulation Project O ur College students participated in the Out Patient Crowd Regulation in the Stanley Hospital, Royapuram between th 15 September and 20th September and in the Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Egmore from 19th September to 30th September 2008. They also regulated the traffic inside and outside the hospital. 7 GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN Cancer Rose Day A visit to Adyar Cancer Institute has been organized on 21st September 2008. The YRC members made a better place for the inhouse patients of the Institute as a token of love and endearment. Our Students munificently distributed fruits and roses to the patients and entrenched a place in their heart. First Aid Training A one day workshop was organized on “First Aid Training” on 24th September 2008. Mr. Ramadoss and Ms. N. Lakshmi, Co-Ordinators of St. John’s Ambulance Association conducted the training programme. Around 100 YRC members were benefited by the awesome training. Shri. Rajesh Lakhoni, I.A.S., Commissioner, Chennai Corporation, Hon.Secy and the Principal at the YRC Blood Donation Camp World Disability Day O ur YRC students visited Spastic Society on 3rd December 2008. Several cultural events & programmes like dance, group songs were performed by the students. Games were also organized for the inmates and the winners were awarded with prizes. About 25 YRC members were accompanied by our faculty members. Red Ribbon Club – Cordial Convivial A live demonstration by the YRC students on First-Aid, (also seen) Mr. Ramadoss, Co-ordinator of St. John’s Ambulance Association World Heart Day T o commemorate World Heart Day, an awareness programme on Heart Borne Disease was organized for YRC volunteers on 25th September 2008. Dr. Prakash Jain, Cardiologist of Apollo hospital was the guest speaker. He used Audio visual aids to enunciate the care and the precautions to be taken to prevent the heart borne disease. Blood Donation Camp – Brave Hearts T he YRC Unit organized a Blood Donation Project in commemoration of National Blood Donors Day on th 20 October 2008. It was inaugurated by Shri. Rajesh Lakhoni, I.A.S., Commissioner, Corporation of Chennai. He insisted that courage to face challenges is an essential factor for success in life. The student donors received an appreciation for donating about 54 units blood to the Indian Red Cross Blood Bank Unit. 8 R ed Ribbon Club of our college was inaugurated on 22nd September 2008 by Shri. S.K. Sathish Kumar, Training Manager YRG Centre for Aids Research and Education. In his speech on ‘HIV Awareness Programme’ he spoke the importance of ELISA Test and transcription and replication of HIV Transmission. He highlighted the importance of sex education and quoted a slogan “Fight Aids With Facts not With Fear”. ROTARACT CLUB – Mission Possible T he Rotaract Club Orientation Programme was conducted on 6th September 2008. Mr. M.J. Aluwalia, Director, Youth Task force and Mr. R. Inder Kumar, president, Rotaract Club of Loyola College, addressed the students on the various activities and working of Rotaract Clubs. Around 100 students registered as its members. THE MAIDEN STEP T he Rotaract Club was inaugurated on 25th September 2008. Ms. Sandhya Sridhar, Joint Secretary of Rotary Club of Madras installed the newly elected Office bearers. Rtr. Mahendra J.Ahluwalia, Director, Youth Service, GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN EDP CELL & NEN ORIENTATION T he EDP Cell was inaugurated on 8th September 2008 by Mrs. Nina Reddy, Executive Director, Savera Hotel. Our principal Dr. M.K. Malathi addressed the gathering and highlighted the action plan for the academic year 2008-09. Mrs. Nina Reddy spoke on the Avenues Entrepreneurship. An Entrepreneurship Orientation Programme was organized in association with National Entrepreneurship Network on 23rd October 2008. Mrs. Vishnupriya, NEN Consultant, spoke about the importance of Entrepreneur in today’s world. Ms. Sandhya Sridhar, Jt., Secretary of Rotary Club of Madras installed the Office Bearers. (also seen) Rtr. Mahendra J. Aluwalia, Director, Rtr. Prasanna, District Rotaract Rep., & the Principal Rtr. Prasanna, District Rotaract Representative, Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi graced the occasion. Ms. Sandya Sridhar installed the Office bearers, President M. Vijayalakshmi of II B.Com. B, Secretary L. Kavitha Baid of I B.Com. A. Ms. Sandya Sridhar emphasized on the power of Women. Director, Rtr. Mahendra J.Aluwalia spoke on setting targets and road maps and to dream big. Rtr. Prasanna shared his experience as a Rotaracter and motivated the students to excel by working as Club members. Rotract Members participated in gathering at Marina Gandhi Statue to show solidarity and voice against terrorism organised by Citizens for Change club and also participated in Zonal Rotaract Convention Conference at Women’s Christian College. In the ‘‘Born To Win’’ programme conducted by Rotaract facilitators for rotaract members, the focus was on wisdom tools, road maps to reach destination, activity management and developing creative personality. KARUNA CLUB – Torrid Axiom T he motto of Karuna Club is Compassion for animals and to spread the message of sympathy towards all living creatures. Dr. D. Rajasekar, I.F.S., Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India promoted the first clap for the Karuna Club on 26th August 2008. He spoke of the need for vegetarianism. He encouraged the audience to share their passion and love towards animals. They conducted several events like Elocution, Painting, Card Designing, Slogan Writing and Poetry Writing. Ms. Lavanya R. Nalli, President, Nalli Group delivers a Peppy talk @ EDP Cell EDP Cell organized “An Interface with Women Entrepreneur” on 3rd October 2008. Mrs. Rupa Rathi (Rupa Creations), Mrs. Sunitha & Mrs. Surekha (Partners, Kalakruthi) presided over the function. They enriched courage among the students to become a successful woman entrepreneur. A special programme was organized by EDP Cell on 31st October 2008. Ms. Lavanya R.Nalli, President, Nalli groups was the guest of honour. She sprayed about her dream project “Lavanya Nalli” for the upper middle class population of Bangalore. A Guest Lecture on “The making of an Entrepreneur” was organized on 4th October 2008. Mr. Karthikeyan Vijayakumar, Excedos Market Services Ltd, electrified the audience by triggering the thirst to be a great entrepreneur. Around 200 members were benefited by the Lecture. The EDP Cell organized several competitions including Paper Presentation contest on “Entrepreneurship will or Skill”, Power Point Presentation on “The making of an Entrepreneur” and Candle making. 9 GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN ISTD Cell conducted HR inscription on 26th September 2008. VALUE EDUCATION CLUB – Revive Education V Shri. R. Vasudevan, Mg Director, Hot Chips Restaurants Pvt Ltd, with EDP Cell-Khana Khazana Prize Winners ISTD – Manufacturer Of Elite Graduates M r.J.N. Amrolia, Executive Director, Ashok Leyland Ltd, inaugurated the ISTD Cell activities for the year 20082009. A lecture on “Employee Engagement” was organized by the ISTD CELL on 9th September 2008. Mr. Steve Rich, Shared Services Manager, India & ASEAN HR Caterpillar INT, spoke on the occasion. Students of the ISTD Cell attended a guest lecture on “Interview Etiquettes” on 10th October 2008 by Ms. Vasantha Srinivasan, HR Manager, Tec Mahindra Ltd., spotted the qualities expected by an interviewer from an interviewee. Workshop on Inner Engineering was organized on 23rd September 2008 by Mr. Vinoth Hari, active member of Isha Yoga Foundation. He emphasized the need of inner engineering and the significance of yoga that creates the enthralled chemistry within us and to generate peace and internal balance to reach higher level of ecstasy and bliss. About 200 students made their presence and revived by his speech. A special lecture on “Human Values In Hindu Scriptures” was organized on 30th September 2008. ENVIRO CLUB – Verdant Fragrance E nviro Club organized a Guest Lecture on the topic “Global Warming” on 5th September 2008, by the Guest of Honour Prof. Dr. Albin T. Fleming, Reader, PG & Research, Dept of Zoology, Loyola College. He shaded about the Green house effect and various remedial measures to safeguard our motherland. And where do we go from here?” organized by Scientific Research Association for Economics and Finance on 29th October 2008. C. Saroja & Smt. C. Lalitha. The Guest of Honour was the film director Thiru. R.V. Udayakumar. The principal Dr. M.K. Malathi spoke on the occasion and declaimed the audience. Ms. Malathi Mohan, the Academy of Fitness Management inaugurated the celebrations. Her lecture was focused on successful vegetarians who leads life without stress and also enthused about health tips, calorie-free diet tips to stay young at heart and mind. WORLD WILD LIFE – Voice of Voiceless T he World Wild Life week was celebrated from 3rd October to 7th October 2008. The jubilation came to an end with a Valedictory function on 7th October 2008. Thiru.R.Rajamanickam, President, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was the Guest of Honour. He spoke of the laws enacted to shelter animals and enforce the laws in a stringent manner. He later distributed prizes to the winners of the various events held in view of World Wild Life Week. This was followed by innovative events like Painting, Card Designing, Slogan Writing, Poetry Writing and Power Point Presentation. A visit to Crocodile Park was organized by WWL Club on 16th September 2008. Nearly 40 students were benefited by the trip. 12 Dr. K.R. GURU SHREE SHANTIVIJAI JAIN COLLEGE FOR WOMEN Anti-terrorism Campaign Programme was organised on 19th December 2008. Shri. R. Nataraj, I.P.S., Director General of Prisons, Tamil Nadu was the Chief Guest. The Hon. Secy. Shri. Gautam Vaid and the Principal Dr. M.K. Malathi graced the occasion by their presence. In his distinguished address on ‘‘Root causes and Remedies of Terrorism”, he emphasised that the desire to dominate is the root cause of terrorism. He gave the statistics of terror attacks that our country has faced and suggested awareness as the remedy to the problem. Shri. Nataraj, I.P.S., DGP., (Prisons) participating @ the Anti-Terrorism Day Earlier, candles were lit as a mark of homage to the victims of Mumbai terror attacks. He cited theories to highlight the inherent and inalienable nature of Human Rights. The Hon. Secretary and the Principal addressed the august gathering.
