Pedagogical Curriculum in HLL 1 Published by the HLL network Drawings: Susan Thygesen Lay-out: Intern Service Printed: Intern Service, april 2016 Translation: Jolene Masters and Sandie R. Mortensen 2 The HLL-network and this booklet In the Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality the childcare institutions are organized in a network management structure. This means that we are a part of a network comprised of seven institutions. Our network is called the Hjortekær, Lundtofte, Lyngby network. In everyday language we use the abbreviation (HLL-network). In the HLL-network the leaders of the seven institutions are committed to cooperation. For example we allocate areas of responsibility between the leaders, which builds upon the idea of sharing and thus benefiting from each other’s resources and capabilities. The daily educational leadership also meets regularly. This group works primarily with educational initiatives involving the staff and children in activities across institutions. This booklet is an excerpt of our educational curricula. The entire document can be read at each of the daycares websites. A basic condition for child development is the adult’s ability to motivate a child’s desire to learn. We view the child’s personal development as the foundation of the five other curriculum themes. To a high degree, personal development depends on how the child/ environment interaction leads to the development of: • Self-esteem • Self-worth • Self-confidence • Independence • Self-reliance Learning objectives • The child learns to feel, know and recognize their own feelings, can say yes or no, feel and respect their own and others’ limits and learns that all feelings are allowed. • The child feels valuable and recognized for who the child is and not what the child does. • The child is inquisitive, has courage and takes the initiative to explore and try new things. • That the child, at an age appropriate level, can think, act and feel according to their own wishes, and can take the initiative in relation to himself and the group • That the child can master age-appropriate expectations in relation to himself, both emotionally and physically 4 And I tied my own shoes! Look, I put on my own clothes! 5 Social skills Following is how we understand the child’s social skills: Each child will develop social behavior and intelligence, through stable attachments to adults and through socializing with peers. Development of empathy and communication skills, being able to create and participate in networks, as well as developing the ability to be socially flexible. This will give the child a good position to succeed in and be an active part of both the institutions community and other communities later in life. Learning objectives • The children will participate in the development of social relations and skills in a larger community, contributing with new perspectives and cooperation in new and different ways. • The children will feel like part of a larger group, and be given recognition. • The children will build relationships and friendships through play and activities. • The children will develop the desire and ability to deal with everyday challenges and adversity. • The children will learn to set boundaries and make decisions, eventually also together with others. • Each child will feel like a significant part of the group. • The children will develop the desire and ability to cooperate and be an active part of democratic processes. 6 I made a new friend and we are going to play together! 7 Language Language is the child’s tool for expressing themselves and communicating with others. It happens not only through spoken or written language, but also through body language, facial expressions and imagery. Children develop their language skills through interaction, different types of experiences, playing , stories, and the planned and spontaneous activities of daily life. Language development is a process in which the child develops his knowledge, understanding and skills Learning Objectives • That children will develop the ability to engage in dialogue with other children and adults • That children will acquire a nuanced vocabularyin order to be as well understood as possible. • That the children will learn to understand nuanced facial and bodily expressions • That the children will learn to use words and concepts from daily life • That the children will, based on their age, recognize and use numbers and letters • That the children will learn to listen and retell a story 8 Twinkle, twinkle little star how I wonder what you are….. Tra la la… 9 Body and Movement skills When we work with “body and movement skills” the children are challenged in body and soul. We give children the opportunity to become acquainted with healthy food and a healthy lifestyle. The children are motivated to be active which increases feelings of well-being and teaches the joy of knowing how to use their body. Learning Objectives • To enhance children’s awareness about ”a healthy mind in a healthy body”, so they develop into happy children with healthy body awareness • To support the children’s sensory development • To support children’s motor development • To strengthen the children’s body awareness and teach them about their own body’s abilities • To strengthen inactive children to move • To create stability for children with motor difficulties • To strengthen children’s appreciation of movement • To develop awareness of what a healthy and sensible lifestyle is. • To develop interaction and educational quality across institutions in the HLL network via a coordinator group with a focus on motor skills and health 10 Should we climb a tree afterwards or bicycle? 11 Nature and Natural Phenomena Working with nature and natural phenomena gives children the opportunity to experience and explore nature. They must experience the weather, the changing seasons, the diversity of nature (forest, beach, lake and playground, etc.). Learning Objectives • Children need to learn to take care of nature • Children should experience the joy of being in nature • Children need to experience nature’s cycle - know the seasons and their characteristics • Children should acquire knowledge of natural phenomena • Children should be able to use their senses in nature • Children should feel that it’s exciting and inspiring to examine things in nature • Children need nature’s versatility; it can be used for example, time for contemplation, physical activity and gives room for their own ideas • Children should be aware of wildlife • To develop interaction and educational quality across institutions in the HLL network via a coordinator group focusing on children and nature 12 How old is the ladybug? Should we count her dots? 13 Cultural expression and values Culture is an expression of man’s understanding of and approach to the world. It is through experiencing different cultures that we define our own cultural standpoint and recognize our own cultural roots. We offer a variety of different forms of cultural expression, which gives children desire and inspiration to share their personal and social identity and standpoint. Learning Objectives • That children experience cultural diversity and that we are different • That children learn that everyone is special and valuable. • That children will have an awareness of self and knowledge of the outside world • That children are practicing and testing themselves in a wide range of forms of artistic expression. • That children should be aware of festivals and traditions • That children help to create a common culture in which all participate in the process • That children dare to express their creativity and experiment 14 Let’s draw and paint to prepare our theater performance. We should also dance Samba! 15 ”Diversity will be our strenght.......The strenght is diversity”
