El Paso County Select Sale
The El Paso County Select Sale with be held on Sunday, April 3, at Owens Livestock
Arena at the El Paso County Fairgrounds. The swine feed clinic starts at 9AM, goat clinic
starts at 10AM and sheep clinic at 11AM, The Livestock sale starts at 1PM. Event is
hosted by the El Paso County 4-H Livestock Advisory Committee.

County Contest Day
The 2016 County Contest will be held on
Saturday, April 23, at Skyview Middle
School. The contest will begin at 9AM and
doors open for check-in at 8:30AM.
Registration is required for all events. Cost
is $5 per person regardless of the number
of events entered. Registration must be
received in the CSU Extension office with
payment by 5PM, Monday, April 11.
Please check all rules for each event before
entering. Contest information can be found

Leader Training Success!
From a volunteer who recently
attended the full six-hour
Volunteer Leader Training:
“I just wanted to thank you for the
leader training session. Tonight, we
had our first general meeting since I
attended the training session.
We have a great club, with a great
group of kids and parents, but our
meetings have been mostly an hour
long business meeting. The kids
have never had much of a chance to
get to know each other, and dreaded the monthly meetings.
Tonight, we changed things up...
We took some of the formality out
of the business part of the meeting,
and we were able to cut it down to
19 minutes. (Still need to work on
that, but it is a start.)
After the meeting, we had a (paper)
snowball fight. Each child made two
snowballs. One had their favorite
thing about 4-H and the other their
least favorite thing about 4-H, respectfully said. The kids were all open
and honest, and as a leader, it was
encouraging to see ALL of the kids
engaged. We talked about what they
liked and how to improve on what
they didn't like to make our club better.
We ended the meeting with cupcakes
and happy kids. Our president told
me it was the best meeting ever! She
felt that by making the meeting less
formal, she felt like she was able to
be herself…
By making a few simple changes, we
ended our club meeting with parents
having to urge their kids to leave, and
with kids excited for the next meeting. SUCCESS!

2016 Rocky Mountain Adventure Camp for Military Youth
Wk 1- June 27-30
Are you a military teen who is 14-18 years old and ready for high adventure?
Join us at Rocky Mountain Adventure Camp at Colorado State University’s Mountain Campus –
Pingree Park, nestled in the Rocky Mountains at 9,000 feet. We offer world class hiking to
surrounding peaks including a B-17 Air Force crash site from 1946, ropes course and white water
rafting. Combine this with our Strength-based Leadership Training and you will have the best camp
ever for Military Teens! The counselors are fabulous, facilities incredible, and the food is great.
Meet other military teens from across the nation.
The cost is only $25 for registration and transportation is provided from Ft. Collins, Buckley AFB
Wk 2- July 11-14 and USAFA! Registration is on a first come first served basis – each camp is limited to 50 youth.

Meat/Pork Quality Assurance
Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) training is required for anyone new to 4-H which includes juniors (8-10) as well as
first year intermediates age group (11-13) and first year seniors (14-18) if they are taking cattle, dairy, hogs, goats,
sheep, rabbits, or poultry you must attend a meat quality assurance workshop. Regardless of whether it is
a market project or a breeding project, you must attend a Meat Quality Assurance workshop. Meat Quality Assurance certification must be completed 45 days prior to our County Fair. It is best to get this requirement
accomplished early to avoid any unforeseen conflicts.
4-H’ers who are 13 and under must have a parent stay at the MQA with them. The next MQA workshop in El
Paso County will be April 21 (in the evening, exact time TBD) at the El Paso County Fairgrounds. Remember that if
you are not able to attend an MQA Workshop in El Paso County, you are welcome to attend MQA Workshops in
another county. Those counties will mail your certification to our office to show that you attended. Please confirm
your attendance before departure. Dates and times may change.

Our county’s 4-H Competitive Trail
Ride program partners with the North
American Trail Ride Conference for
its competitions. If you join NATRC,
you become eligible for NATRC
awards and will receive its ride
information/news directly, as well as
discounts on entry fees. Visit

To compete at an NATRC ride for
achievement points, 4-Hers must be
10 years old at the start of the ride
year and at least Level 1. See the
county 4-H Horse Rule Book and
NATRC rules (natrc.org) for
complete details. Parents may volunteer or compete at NATRC rides,
too, making it a fun family event!
What is NATRC? It provides long
distance competitive trail rides and
clinics for riders of all equine breeds

safety, sportsmanship, education and

evaluation of horse and rider by
veterinary and horsemanship judges, in

Join the Rabbit Judging Team
With the start of the rabbit judging season, we
have put together a one-of-a-kind team of skilled
4-Hers. We have really joined together as a family,
and done very well at our first meet.
Everyone has to start somewhere, so don’t be
afraid to join the team! Within our team, we have
a tradition. After every meet, successful or not,
we get ice cream together. This is the highlight of every
meet (besides winning). We have weekly practices where
we play games, goof around, and feed off of each other's
knowledge. Rabbit Judging gives
4-Hers a place to expand their knowledge and test their
skills far beyond any rabbit project.

How to Subscribe to Facebook or Yahoo Group
El Paso County (EPC) 4-H Shooting Sports uses social media to communicate shooting sports information. Please
follow the instructions below. Both of these groups are closed and membership requires approval. Only requests
from enrolled 4-H members/families in the 4-H shooting sports project will only be granted access.
Subscribing to the EPC 4-H Shooting Sports Facebook group:
- Search for "epc 4-H shooting sports" (without the quotes)
- Select the "Groups" tab
- Push the "Join" button
This sends a request to the group. A group admin will then accept the request and the member will be joined.
Subscribing to the Yahoo mailing list:

County Competition is NOT a requirement for
completion of the Shooting Sports project, however, if you
are planning to participate in our county competition, you
need to complete the following requirements:
1. Attend 2 practices per discipline that you want to
compete in. If you are in outdoor skills and plan to
participate in YHEC, these practices are great opportunities to practice for those qualifiers.
2. Attend Division of Wildlife Hunter Education
course and receive your hunter education card.
3. Attend SQA course - this is only required when
you join shooting sports program: First year in
project, First year as an intermediate (4-H age 1113), and First year as a senior (4-H age 14-18).
Fees
Annual 4-H Participation Fee: $20. Make checks payable to: EPC 4-H SS. Mail to: CSU Extension, 17 N Spruce St,
Colorado Springs, CO 80905. Payment can be made in person at the upcoming SQA on May 5.
Pikes Peak Gun Club: $5.00 per 4-Her for all disciplines except shotgun. Shotgun is $5.00 per round, to cover the

Fundraising Opportunity
Come raise funds for your 4-H Club or Project at the 2016 FOX Garden Tour. The last 4 years of 4-H booths have
been a success, contributing several hundreds of dollars to participating clubs. This opportunity is open to all 4-H Clubs
and Projects. Your club/project gets to keep and decide how to use the proceeds they raise. Sales opportunities have
been expanded this year to include items that can be prepared weeks in advance. In addition to baked goods, your
club/project may sell handmade garden themed items such as soap, candles, and pots or canned goods. Tables and signs
will be provided, and set up and take down will be done for you.
The Fox Garden Tour is a very well attended event hosted by FOX (Friends of the Extension) to raise funds for El
Paso County Extension Office programs including 4-H and the Master Gardener Program. This year’s tour will be held
in the Broadmoor area on July 16th and 17th. The 4-H sales booth will operate both days from 9am–3pm.

Colorado State 4-H Foundation Scholarship
The Colorado State 4-H Foundation has scholarships available and applications are being accepted through April 1,
2016 for senior 4-H high school members and college freshmen. The information and application form are now
available on the foundation website at: http://www.co4hfoundation.colostate.edu/scholarships.shtml
Requirements for application include:
 A recent photo (preferably your senior picture)
 Proof of acceptance into college
 Recommendations (at least two) – these are done through the system via emails
El Paso County, Sue Crozier Livestock Scholarship (includes large and small animal projects)
High school seniors and college freshmen are eligible for this scholarship from the El Paso County Livestock Sale
Committee. An applicant may receive this scholarship only ONCE. The application form may be found at http://
elpasoco.colostate.edu/4h/4h-scholarship.shtml. Please note the following rule: applicants must have a minimum of
three years of successful completion of market livestock projects to be eligible. This completed application and all

Cottage Food Safety Training

Here in Colorado, great soil, good compost and a rich green
lawn are not automatic but are definitely attainable. This
seminar includes classes on:
Soil properties, amendments and fertilizers.
Research shows that 80% of plant problems can be
traced to poor soil conditions! This could well be the
most valuable garden class you will ever take.
Making good compost. According to the EPA, 24% of
landfill mass could be composted! Come learn the best
way to create amendments that are such an
important ingredient of good soil.
The fundamentals of effective lawn care. Knowing
the fundamentals of lawn care helps reduce cost and
labor and is the key to grass that is greener on your
side of the fence. This class is a must for homeowners
who appreciate the value of a great lawn.
Successful Vegetable Gardening Seminar

Whether you are new to vegetable gardening or a pro looking for new tricks, we will have something for
everyone! This seminar will be crammed full with
vegetable gardening education, hints, and troubleshooting information! Topics include:
Planning
Succession planting
Basic soil/water/air requirements
Choosing plants
Which veggies to start from seed
Season extenders
Weather/hail challenges

This 3-hour training provides a 3-year
certification and meets the food safety training
requirement for Colorado Cottage Foods Act.
Learn the specifics for operating a food business
from a home kitchen. Review the current law,
Tier 1 permissible foods and ingredient labeling
requirements. We will cover basics of food safety
including proper hygiene; preventing cross
contamination and cross-contact of food
allergens; temperature control for safe food
preparation, storage, transporting produce and
sales. Resources for food preparation at altitude
and for going further with your business will be
shared, Registration closes 3 days before training
date.
There will also be a Cottage Food Potluck at
this training. If you would like to participate, bring
in your Cottage Foods and we can sample local
Cottage Food offerings and answer any questions
you may have.
