While that statement is generally true every year, it is especially true this year. We are seeing a great deal of success in the classroom that will hopefully translate to another successful year of state testing in the near future. Our athletic teams, music groups, and drama team have had a tremendous year so far. These activity groups are raising the bar to new and higher levels. Inside This Issue: I would like to single out our Senior Class as being a major reason for this awesome year. I believe they have done a great deal to contribute to the Pages 2-3: Honor Roll environment that has been created in order to achieve this success. For Page 4: 5th Grade Class this group it all starts in the classroom. This class has 48 students and they have a combined Grade Point Average of 3.30. Their average ACT Page 5: FBLA score is 23.6, which is well over the National average of 20. 9 and State average of 21.5. At the time I’m writing this, the class has four students Page 6: February Menu with a perfect 4.0 GPA, three with a 3.95 or better and another seven students with a 3.90 or higher. Five of the students have scored a 30 or Page 7: Brian Streeter better on the ACT, which places them in the upper 95% of the students Pages 7-11: Minutes and Bills in the nation who have taken the ACT. Page: 12: Schedule Pages 13-15: Ads Malcolm Public Schools would like to thank Sue Vanderkolk for her 15 years of service to the district as a para-educator. Best wishes to Sue in her new adventure! This tremendous success has created an issue that needs to be addressed. Malcolm is looking at the real possibility of excellent students being left out when it comes to local scholarships. A few of our traditional scholarships have run out over the course of time and we are in need of some new investors to come forward. We look at this as an excellent chance to invest in our community’s most important asset - our students. Whether it’s a business or a family that would like to honor a loved one, we would love to hear from you and get something started that benefits our students and invests in the future. Scholarships can be open to what any family or business may want to do. Malcolm students are always appreciative, and as we all know, the cost of post-secondary education is on an upward trend. Continued on Page 2... ...Continued from Page 1 We believe this issue will be with us for the foreseeable future. Our current junior class already has two students with an ACT score of 30 or higher, and our sophomore grade point average is higher than this year’s senior class. As you can see, our seniors have set the bar high and our younger grades are following their example and will be presented with the same issue. If we can increase our local scholarship pool, more students can be recognized and rewarded for their efforts. Doing the math from an earlier paragraph, we have 14 students with a 3.90 grade point average or higher which is 29 percent of the class. That means a student with a 3.89 grade point average is not in the upper 25 percent of their class. Also, with the average grade point average being 3.30, any student with a 3.29 or lower is not in the top half of their class. As you can see, we have many deserving students that have scores that would normally warrant recognition but because of this class and future class’ excellence, they are in a danger zone of missing out on local scholarship opportunities. We do recognize that local scholarships are not the only scholarship opportunities students have to earn financial support. We do our best at Malcolm to make sure students are aware of these and take advantage of as many of them as possible. The point to this article is to point out the need and opportunity for members of this school community to step forward and invest in our many deserving students. If anyone out there would like to initiate a scholarship, increase an existing scholarship, or if you know of someone we should contact, please let me know. This subject is something new on the radar at Malcolm and we are exploring all opportunities. I felt the best way to start this exploration was to go to the community in order to put our heads together and see what we can do to invest in our students’ futures. He was part of the Transportation cell of the Centcom Distribution and Deployment Operations center. Major Goodwater shared valuable information about his experiences during his deployment. The 5th graders had many questions for Mr. Goodwater – we were so glad he took the opportunity to answer our many questions. Thank you Major Goodwater for your continued loyalty and for your service in the military – because of wonderful people like you, we enjoy our freedom. I was very proud of the 5th graders. They were so respectful during the entire presentation by Major Goodwater and as each student left the room, they shook Mr. Goodwater’s hand! 5th Graders Decorate Christmas Ornaments with the Kindergarten Class By: Mrs. Densberger The 5th graders were so excited to have both Kindergarten classes visit our classroom to decorate Christmas ornaments. The wooden ornaments were cut out by Mrs. Densberger’s dad (Bob Burr). He cut out enough ornaments that each Kindergartner and 5th grader was able to decorate and take an ornament. We hope you enjoyed the little extra special ornament on your Christmas tree! We look forward to more projects with our Kindergarten friends. malcolm public schools “the clipper” january 23, 2014 page 4 FBLA Fall 2013 Review By Ben Dostal Another great first semester is in the books for Malcolm FBLA with Money Camp, the Paths to Success Conference, the March of Dimes fundraiser, and the holiday food drive. We had 50 kids attend Money Camp this year to learn valuable skills like spending money, saving money, and how to get the best value for their dollar. The kids traveled through 5 stations which included Saving and Spending, the Game of Life, Counting Back Change, Smart Consumer Shopping, and Entrepreneurship Jeopardy. The Paths to Success conference is always a fun and educational time for freshmen and sophomore FBLA members at the UNL student union. They started with a keynote speaker and then traveled to educational workshops about leadership and careers. We had a very successful fundraiser for the March of Dimes foundation. Elementary students generously donated over $400 for families hit by premature birth and other birth defects. We added a Blue Jeans for Babies day with staff donating to wear jeans to school. Our final project before winter break was to compile holiday meal baskets for the backpack program. With a generous donation from IGA and many donations from members, we gathered enough food for all five families to have a festive holiday dinner. We are looking forward to another great semester. page 5 10004 nw 112th st, malcolm, ne 68402 www.malcolmschools.org malcolm public schools “the clipper” january 23, 2014 page 6 KFOR Weather Kid Congratulations to Brian Streeter who recently did a fantastic job as the KFOR Weather Kid. The week of January 19-25 has been designated Nebraska School Board Recognition week, and I feel honored to recognize our six member board. As citizen leaders, these individuals are charged with the unenviable task of making tough decisions on a myriad of complex educational issues. In my opinion, they do an excellent job balancing their responsibility to the district patrons with their responsibility to the students, staff and parents of Malcolm Public Schools. I feel fortunate to serve a board that is student-centered and committed to providing an outstanding education to every student that walks through our doors. With that, I would like to thank and recognize our board for their time, effort and commitment to education and the community at large.
