The week of January 25-31 has been designated Nebraska School Board
Recognition week, and I feel honored to recognize our six member board.
As citizen leaders, these individuals are charged with the unenviable task
of making tough decisions on a myriad of complex educational issues.
In my opinion, they do an excellent job balancing their responsibility
to the district patrons with their responsibility to the students, staff and
parents of Malcolm Public Schools. I feel fortunate to serve a board
that is student-centered and committed to providing an outstanding
education to every student that walks through our doors. With that, I
would like to thank and recognize our board for their time, effort and
commitment to education and the community at large.

Chromebooks in 5th Grade

Late in the first semester the 5th grade got a set of chromebooks to use in the
classroom.
Chromebooks are laptops with the chrome operating system that are being used in
schools throughout the world.
The set in the 5th grade has 24 machines that we share. By using free software
from the chrome store students have been able to screencast, receive and hand
in assignments electronically, and continue to work on their keyboarding skills.
From the teacher point of view, I am excited to have students using the technology
to share their what they are learning in many different ways. Students can be
creative and use a tool they are very comfortable with. Using the chromebooks in a
classroom setting also allows the students to see technology being used in a way other
than “gaming”.
Another benefit we have realized is the amount of paper we are saving. By doing so much
electronically we estimate we are saving between 100 and 200 sheets of paper a week!
The students and teachers in grade 5 say “Thank you” to MPS for allowing us to have access
to this and all the technology tools we have.
ATTENTION HOME SCHOOL FAMILIES
In accordance with the requirements of 92 NAC 51, this public
announcement is to invite homeschooling families to a meeting
where they will have an opportunity to participate in the
discussion of a plan for Child Find and the provision of
special education services to children with disabilities who
will attend a nonpublic school option during the 2015-2016
school year. This meeting will be offered at two different
times at the Malcolm Public Schools Business Office. The
first will be February 5th @ 9:00AM and the second will be
May 20th @ 4:00PM. Please contact Jon Squier, Director of

of the keys without looking. We use covers at school, but you can easily place a
kitchen
or hand towel over your child’s hands while he or she types to achieve the

Another one of the students’ favorites is ABCya (abcya.com). The activities are
separated by grade levels and provide a wide range of concepts and topics for the kids to enjoy.
Many of the older students enjoy the activities on Cool Math Games (http://www.coolmathgames.com/) as well.
SumDog (sumdog.com) provides older kids with an assortment of math problems within
each activity. The sixth graders all have their own log ins, but any other student can use our
subscription accounts (provided thanks to last year’s sixth graders winning the Southeast
Nebraska competition). The user name is student## (any number between 11 and 40 can be
substituted for the ##), the password is the same as we use to log into the computers at school
(your child uses that password each time he or she logs in for class) and the school code is
“westfall”. We will hopefully participate in another competition in January or February.
Those sites should provide you with more of a sense of security knowing your students are
using technology as a learning tool all while being entertained. Have fun and learn a lot!

ALUMNI NEWS:
Spencer Gregg developed a new recording studio
at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He was
the consultant/creator/engineer of the recent
project, and is also producing podcast tutorials
on how to use all of the equipment, etc. It is a
paid project and also his senior business project.

NEXT MEETING – Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30 pm in the Room 486 (Eichenberger’s room)
DISTRICT WRESTLING Feb 13/14 – Please help Boosters put this event on. Table help and
concession help are needed. Watch for a concession shift sheet coming to your inbox soon!
EQUIPMENT – Boosters purchased a VertiMax machine. This machine will be used to improve
aspects of every high school sport at Malcolm.
TRACK FAT PROJECT - Jack reported that there will be a meeting in January to try and recruit
sponsorship for the purchase of an FAT system for track meets.
RECORD BOARDS – A softball and wrestling record board will be added, the track record board will
be updated. Football, basketball and volleyball records are being researched for future record boards.
PROJECTOR SPONSORS - Boosters are using these funds to grow the number and value of
scholarships given. If you know of a business who may be interested in advertising on the projector,
please let Dale Sackett (937-3776) or Kristie Locke (560-1822) know.
Please come to Booster meetings throughout the year. Your input is essential for events, scholarships
and other activities which Boosters participate in and/or coordinate. The funds raised go towards
improving the athletic environment & providing scholarships for our student athletes. Thanks!
Malcolm Action Coalition (MAC) Notes
DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT – Sunday, February 15th!! MAC is co-sponsoring with Student
Council. Registration will benefit the Malcolm Backpack Program. BE THERE!!
SAFE HOMES SCHOOL DIRECTORIES – These have been sent home. If you did not get one, there
are extras in the HS office.
PORTABLE BILLBOARD – MAC is purchasing one from the Hastings prevention group. Watch for
this at upcoming events in the new year.
LOVE AND LOGIC™ - Parenting the Love and Logic Way™ is a six session parenting program
designed by the Love and Logic Institute. Introduction will be Monday, January 19th from 6- 8 pm at
Raymond Central. There is a nominal fee. More information to come – stay tuned!

LIFE SKILLS

Students who participate in the Life Skills Curriculum here at Malcolm worked on
a special project at the end of last semester to raise money. Students made dog
treats to sell to the staff here at school. This project allowed students to work on
a variety of skills while making a fun recipe. By making the dog treats students
had the opportunity to practice following a modified recipe. They had to follow
the directions for each step so that they would turn out right. Students practiced
measuring ingredients, using the oven and kitchen safety during this project as
well. Students practiced counting and money skills as they packaged the treats and
prepared to sell them. This money will be used for a fun community outing later this
semester. Students had a great time doing this project and quite a few dogs got an extra
treat for the Holidays.

MRS. SAMUELSON’S MATH CLASSES
We start off the second semester with a welcome addition to the classroom.

A always, I begin the second semester with all of my classes having to
prove
they can make and count change. Each student will be given 4

scenarios which include what someone may order at the concession stand
sc
and the amount of money they would pay with. The students must total
the items (in their head), pick up the correct change (by counting up),
up th
then count it back correctly. Every student must get a 100 on this test or
and the
continue retaking it until they do. Don’t be afraid to ask a student at the concession stand to count
back your change so they can put their skills to good use and/or don’t be afraid to compliment or
acknowledge when a student does count back your change.
As for other topics being taught, all classes are busy graphing and writing equations of lines or
parabolas. The Algebra 1 and general math classes are reviewing slope, graphing lines (using
slope and y intercept or using the intercepts), and writing the equations of lines (given slope
and y intercept, point and slope, 2 points, and/or a point with an equation that is parallel or
perpendicular to it). The Algebra 2 classes are reviewing graphing quadratic equations and
inequalities (parabola), writing quadratic equations, and the solutions to quadratic inequalities.
The math 7 class is generating t-charts (needed to graph lines and parabolas), graphing lines and
parabolas, and being introduced to slope.
Lastly, just a reminder to those of you who have internet access, there is a great tutorial that goes
along with our math series. The website is: go.hrw.com. Once you are on the website, scroll
down to the bottom left and type in the homework keyword (found on your student’s worksheet)
in the resource box. You will then be able to pull up videos on how to do the homework problems.

CONGRESS-BUNDESTAG VOCATIONAL YOUTH EXCHANGE
Up to 25 graduating seniors, 18 years of age, have an exciting and immensely
rewarding opportunity to spend a year in Germany on the Congress-Bundestag
Vocational Youth Exchange Program. This full scholarship, funded by the United States
Congress and the German Bundestag, provides students the experience of living with a
host family, participating in a training program or schooling program, and gaining hands-on
experience through an internship with a German company. Participants have been placed in fields
as diverse as the arts, auto mechanics, biotechnology, child care, computer science, education,
forestry, health care, hotel management, international business, journalism, political science, theatre,
veterinary science and more. Malcolm High School is allowed to nominate three students. If your
senior is interested in participating in this program, please call the guidance office soon, as completed
applications must be received in the Nacel Open Door office by January 31, 2015. You may download
the application form from www.nacelopendoor.org. Applications must be sent in by the student’s
school, so please bring completed applications to the Guidance office no later than Monday, January

UNL CAREER EXPLORATIONS
IN ARCHITECTURE, INTERIOR DESIGN & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
The UNL Department of Architecture will be conducting the 2015 summer workshop for high school
students interested in exploring careers in architecture and interior design the week of June 7-13
for Architecture, Interior Design & Landscape Architecture (36 students). Discover Landscape
Architecture (15 students) will be held from June 14-19. 2015. Each of the camps are a one-week
residential program with opportunities for an intense period of study as well as recreation and
entertainment. The central focus of the workshops is a design studio with opportunities for students
to experience their creative potential as they explore various design issues in different media. In
addition to the studio, students attend lectures, go on field trips, partake in seminar discussions, and
view films on design. These activities are planned to broaden students’ understanding of the design
professions and offer a glimpse into the activities that form the foundation for all design inquiry. The
fee for each workshop is $585 covering the cost of studio supplies, program fees, meals and lodging.
Students are supervised overnight while in the residence hall by Department of Architecture staff.
If your student is interested, go to http://architecture.unl.edu/prospective-student/high-schoolworkshops to download an application form. Two recommendations from persons (other than
family) familiar with the applicant’s academic and creative ability are required. In addition, each
applicant is to submit a 500-word essay describing why he/she is interested in architecture and/
or interior design and why he/she wishes to attend the workshop. All application materials must be
received in the Department of Architecture office on or before April 6, 2015.
WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS SUMMER EXPERIENCES
The High School Summer Scholars Program allows a select number of participants (age guidelines
on the website for each institute) to choose from almost 60 different courses spanning the arts,
humanities, sciences, social sciences and foreign languages. Two five-week sessions are offered in
June and July 2015. Students can earn up to seven college credits transferable to most accredited
colleges and universities. Summer Scholars live in the under-graduate residential area with trained
Resident Advisors and enjoy a variety of social and cultural opportunities with other participants from
around the world. The program requires application, recommendations and an official transcript.
Limited scholarship assistance is available to students with strong academic credentials who also
demonstrate financial need. They also offer High School Summer Institutes (non-credit courses) that
last two to three weeks and two sessions of the one-week Middle School Summer Challenge. For more

Grief Groups Set to Begin Next Week
at Mourning Hope for both Youth and Young Adults
The next 10-week Family Grief Series is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 26. These sessions will take
place every Monday night from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Mourning Hope Grief Center (4919 Baldwin Avenue).
This group is open to new families, but also available for anyone who has already attended a 10-week session.
After the challenging holiday season is a particularly good time for children, teens and caregivers to reengage
with grief support.
Families are invited to participate in Mourning Hope's programs following the death of anyone significant in
their lives - a sibling, parent, grandparent or friend. Activities are designed to help youth express themselves
through art, games, and dramatic play. The adults become aware of strategies to help their grieving children as

Mourning Hope will be hosting a social event at Old Chicago in the Haymarket on Thursday, January 29, 2015,
for any young adults between the ages of 18 and 30(ish). Whether you are single, married, have experienced the
death of a family member, co-worker or friend, Mourning Hope invites you to participate in this supportive,
casual dinner. Happy circle of friends hugging together at the park

Minutes – Board of Education
January 19, 2015
The Board of Education, School District 148, Lancaster County, Nebraska met in open public session at 7:00PM
at the District Board Room, 10004 NW 112th St., Malcolm, NE on Monday, January 19, 2015 to conduct normal
and usual business of the District. Said meeting was advertised in advance in the minutes of the December 15,
2014 meeting, published in the December 18, 2014 issue of “The Clipper”. Board members answering roll call
were: Michelle Bice, William England, Andrea Holka, Chandler Kramer, Kevin Lostroh, Craig Vanderkolk.
Administrators present were Ryan Terwilliger, Greg Adams, Amber Dolliver. Ms. Julia Lostroh, Business
Manager, assumed temporary Chair and called the meeting to order at 7:02PM and noted that the Open Meetings
Act is posted on the north wall of the Board Room.
Ms. Lostroh called for nominations for the office of President of the Board of Education. Bice nominated
Craig Vanderkolk. After hearing and seeing no further nominations, she declared nominations closed. Seeing
and hearing no objections to declaring Craig Vanderkolk elected by acclamation, Ms. Lostroh declared Craig
Vanderkolk President of the Board and turned the Chair over to Mr. Vanderkolk.
Chairman Vanderkolk called for nominations for the office of Vice-President of the Board of Education. Lostroh
nominated Bice. After hearing and seeing no further nominations, he declared the nominations closed. Seeing
and hearing no objections to declaring Michelle Bice elected by acclamation, Chairman Vanderkolk declared Bice
Vice-President of the Board of Education.
Chairman Vanderkolk called for nominations for the office of Secretary of the Board of Education. Bice
nominated Holka. After hearing and seeing no further nominations, he declared nominations closed. Seeing and
hearing no objections to declaring Andrea Holka elected by acclamation, Chairman Vanderkolk declared Andrea
Holka Secretary of the Board of Education by acclamation.
Chairman Vanderkolk called for nominations for the office of Treasurer of the Board of Education. Lostroh
nominated England. After hearing and seeing no further nominations, he declared nominations closed. Seeing
and hearing no objections to declaring William England elected by acclamation, Chairman Vanderkolk declared
William England Treasurer of the Board of Education by acclamation.
After asking for volunteers, the following committee appointment were made by Chairman Vanderkolk –
Negotiations: Bice, Vanderkolk, Holka. Americanism: Lostroh, Bice, Kramer. Building/Grounds: Lostroh,
Vanderkolk, England. Finance: Holka, England, Kramer.
Moving into business of the meeting, Bice moved, seconded by Lostroh, to approve the consent agenda with an
updated list of bills. Ms. Lostroh went through the list of bills and receipts and addressed any questions. Voting
by roll call: YES – England, Holka, Kramer, Lostroh, Vanderkolk, Bice. NAYS – None. Motion 1-2015-1 passed.

minutes during the 2015 calendar year by either or all of the following: The Clipper, Lincoln Journal

Lostroh, Vanderkolk, Bice, England. NAYS – None. Motion 1-2015-2 passed.
England moved, seconded by Kramer, to designate Perry, Guthery, Haase, and Gessford Law Firm
for providing the school district legal counsel during the 2015 calendar year. Voting by roll call: YES
– Kramer, Lostroh, Vanderkolk, Bice, England, Holka. NAYS – None. Motion 1-2015-3 passed.
Bice moved, seconded by Lostroh, the school district continue using Union Bank & Trust Co. of
Lincoln and Nebraska School District Liquid Asset Fund, as its depositories for the 2015 calendar
year. Voting by roll call: YES – Lostroh, Vanderkolk, Bice, England, Holka, Kramer. NAYS – None.
Motion 1-2015-4 passed.
Holka moved that the Board allow and approve class credit be given to the students who take the
following Asynchronous Virtual High School courses: Peacemaking and Journalism In The Digital
Age. Seconded by Bice. Voting by roll call: YES – Vanderkolk, Bice, England, Holka, Kramer, Lostroh.
NAYS – None. Motion 1-2015-5 passed.
Bice moved to allow Malcolm Athletic Coaches/Sponsors the use of school vehicles, building and
grounds for the 2015 Summer Activities – if activities are pre-approved by the Administration.
Seconded by Lostroh. Voting by roll call: YES – Bice, England, Holka, Kramer, Lostroh, Vanderkolk.
NAYS – None. Motion 1-2015-6 passed.
The Board took no action to determine dates for a spring work session. They will set a date at the
February meeting.
Holka moved, seconded by Bice, to enter into an interlocal agreement with ALICAP to provide
insurance services for a term no less than three years. The Board directed Mr. Terwilliger to inquire
as to the coverage for quasi-school groups and underinsured/uninsured motorists. Voting by roll call:
YES – Holka, Kramer, Lostroh, Vanderkolk, Bice, England. NAYS – none. Motion 1-2015-7 passed.
The resolution commitment to enter into the ALICAP interlocal agreement was read by Mrs. Holka
and signed by Chairman Vanderkolk.

Discussed options on how to open the weight room to the community. Several options were
discussed.
Asked the Board for input on how they would like to handle attendance at National Board
Conventions. The Board discussed the need for Board professional development and encouraging
attendance at educational opportunities.
Mr. Terwilliger reviewed the dates for upcoming Board conferences.
The Board discussed continuing the perceptual data survey and how often they would like to
