CANADA’S ONLY
FESTIVAL
DEVOTED TO THE PRESENTATION
AND DEVELOPMENT OF
INNOVATIVE,
COLLABORATIVE,
AND SOCIALLY RELEVANT
THEATRE
FOR YOUTH
The Southern Ontario Youth Theatre Festival (SOYTF) is an annual celebration of
innovative creation and performance, engaging youth from as far south as
Windsor, east to Niagara Falls, north to Ottawa, and everywhere in between.
We invite students, teachers, and audiences to share creativity and to inspire
each other through participation and performance.
We present work that is innovative, collaborative, and socially relevant; intrinsic,
theatrical art with deep, awe-inspiring, and thought-provoking messages.
We are devoted to pushing boundaries, providing students the unique ability to
tell their own stories.
Together, as a community, we give audiences the chance to ask their own
questions – about themselves, the way they live, what moves them, and why.

SHOES
by Cast Collective
Sunday, May 24 @ 9:00am
SYNOPSIS / DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Shoes is a community class production. The students in this production are teenagers who
each bring an individual set of talents and skills to this show. They also each have their
own unique challenges. Some of the students are autistic, developmentally delayed, and
have Down Syndrome. This show explores the students’ dreams as well as what makes
them happy. Some of these kids have big dreams, dreams of going to college, or
becoming a famous chef, and some of the kids have simple dreams of driving a car or
getting a job washing windows. The message and importance of this show is not how
attainable a dream is, but rather the importance of dreaming and the importance of
living in the moment. These kids teach me about living in the moment, free of judgment
or censorship. Teaching and directing this group of actors is absolutely freeing in the
sense that I am able to play and to join in on their impulsiveness and freedom without
fear of failure or judgment. “If You Could Walk a Day in my Shoes” will give you a
fifteen-minute glimpse of these student’s dreams and moments of joy, big and small.

SOYTF 2015 | Special Thanks
I would like to thank our co-hosts this year, WCCA and KW Youth Theatre, for jumping
into this theatrical adventure. To all the students participating in this year’s festival;
you are the reason we are here. To all the staff advisors for being so kind and
excited for what this festival stands for. To all the Ontario school boards for investing
in the arts. To all the parents and guardians for believing in their children. To my
co-pilot and partner-in-life, Julia Krauss, whose talent and positive energies are a
constant source of inspiration. And to the theatre creators who came before us, who
weren’t afraid to create something new and different, and who were the pioneers in
shaping the cultural identities of their communities. To all, I say Thank You.
With respect and gratitude,
Nicholas Walsh
