The Catholic Church of Saint Mary the Virgin 1408 North Davis Drive, Arlington, Texas 76012, 817-460-2278 [email protected]; www.stmarythevirgin.org Eleventh Sunday after Trinity (The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time) August 16, 2015 Divine Worship: Order of Holy Mass Low Mass 8:00 am, Solemn Mass 10:30am, Low Mass 6:00 pm See Mass card or Mass booklet Collect O God, who declarest thy almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace; that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen. First Reading PSALM 34:1-2, 9-14 R/. O taste and see that the Lord is good! I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. R/. O fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no want! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. R/. Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her maids to call from the highest places in the town, "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" to him who is without sense she says, "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave simpleness, and live, and walk in the way of insight." Come, O sons, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life, and covets many days, that he may enjoy good? R/. Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. R/. Second Reading Ephesians 5:15-20 Look carefully, brethren, how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. V/. Alleluia. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him, says the Lord. Alleluia. THE HOLY GOSPEL John 6:51-58 At that time: Jesus said to the crowds, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." +++ MUSIC Prelude……………………...……Flute Piece, William Hine Entrance Hymn………………..………………..….….427 KYRIE……………..…...…………............................….S91 GLORIA…………………………………………..…...S202 Offertory Hymn………….……..……...…....……....…488 SANCTUS…………...…..…………………………....…....S114 Our Father………………………………………...….S119 AGNUS DEI……..………...…...…….……………...…….S158 Communion Hymn…………….…..…..…………...…..328 Anthem……………..…...Tell Out My Soul, William H. Timothy Perkins The ordination of Thomas Kennedy to the diaconate yesterday and his upcoming ordination to priesthood has caused me to reflect once again on the invitation to discipleship. Our Lord Jesus himself calls every one of us, each person of faith, “Come to me … learn from me …” (Matthew 11:28-29). To become his disciple means to enter into relationship with Christ as his student, his pupil. Further, a disciple is one who lives by a particular discipline. Hence, to come to Jesus and enter into saving relationship with him is to devote ourselves in submission to the Master’s authority. In the Gospel, one of the principle ways that Jesus speaks of this is through the simple invitation, “Follow me.” This involves a great deal of trust. To respond faithfully is to step forward behind our Leader in confidence that he knows the way in which to lead us. Indeed, our Savior assures us, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Friday, August 21 +++ Mass at 9:00am S.I. Help, Help, Help! St. Mary the Virgin is in need of at least one additional money counter to assist in pr epar ing the Sunday collections for deposit. More than one would be excellent! Training is provided. If you want to help the church with a job that only takes a couple of hours a month, call the parish office and speak to Terry any afternoon. New Procedure! From now on, when an event is over and the trash is bagged up, DO NOT PUT IT BEHIND THE BUILDING. Leave it in the kitchen. That way the maintenance folks will get it out to the curb on the right day. It is too easy for trash to stack up behind the building and get smelly and picked open by birds and animals. It is a disservice to our neighbors as well, since it attracts vermin. Thank you!
