Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) is honored to work with individuals, families, and corporations in satisfying their objectives. This year, we received a new home: a gift made possible through the vision and munificence of Rodney and Cindi Savoy. Permanence and stability were objectives central to this gift. This venue will solidify the Foundation’s position as south-central Louisiana’s premier philanthropic organization. The Foundation also wishes to acknowledge the generosity of the Moody Family, who so graciously provided CFA office space for the past seven years. For these gifts, the Foundation and our communities are eternally grateful. Central to the Foundation’s mission is our donors. By relying on a donor-centric model, the Foundation positions itself to provide unparalleled flexibility, options, and services. CFA is not the end-beneficiary; donors entrust us with fiduciary oversight of their charitable dollars and facility of millions of dollars of grants from their funds, at their direction, to causes and entities they support. As an objective broker, Community Foundation of Acadiana is uniquely positioned to facilitate projects like Ascension Episcopal School and the Horse Farm. We can accommodate local geographic affiliates, like the Iberia Parish Enhancement Fund and the St. Mary Parish Community Fund. And in 2010, we are unveiling DonorSense to provide objective data on nonprofits throughout Acadiana. You might be surprised at how easy it is to be part of your community foundation: • Start your named fund. Donor-advised funds are easy, inexpensive options with unparalleled flexibility. You can even choose to have your professional advisor manage your charitable fund. • Give to an existing fund (that mirrors your objectives). • Give to the Friends of the Community Fund. For as little as $100, you can get involved in the activities and support of your foundation. • Establish a legacy for you and your family. We thank our Board and other volunteers – past and present. We especially thank our donors for their interest in improving the quality of life in Acadiana and for including CFA in their plans. Let us introduce you to Community Foundation of Acadiana – your community foundation. Visit us online at www.cfacadiana.org or call our office at 337.769.4840. We look forward to working with you. David T. Calhoun Chair Raymond J. Hébert Executive Director 2 artist message Like the four artists before me, Acadiana is my home and I am constantly amazed at the beauty of the land, the architecture, wildlife, and the joie de vivre of the people. Creating art has allowed me to realize how quickly life changes, but the images I paint are captured forever for all to see and enjoy. I like to think my landscapes of our area awaken others to the beauty surrounding us and I strive to express the passion of the individuals I paint. Community Foundation of Acadiana was created to help donors improve the quality of life in Acadiana and I am honored to be chosen as this year’s featured artist. 3 Gwen Voorhies Community Foundation of Acadiana MISSION STATEMENT THE MISSION OF COMMUNITY Community Foundation of Acadiana is built on the principle that building giving in a community also builds that community. FOUNDATION OF ACADIANA IS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR REGION BY INCREASING GIVING, CONNECTING DONORS WITH WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT, AND PROVIDING LEADERSHIP Who We Are Community Foundation of Acadiana is a group of professional staff and dedicated volunteers devoted to improving our region through giving. ON COMMUNITY NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES. VISION STATEMENT TO BE THE RECOGNIZED LEADER IN MATCHING DONORS WITH NEEDS IN ACADIANA REGION VALUES INTEGRITY CREDIBILITY TRUSTWORTHINESS LONG-TERM STEWARDSHIP HIGH ETHICAL STANDARDS FAIRNESS TRANSPARENCY What We Do Increasing Giving We work with individual donors and groups of donors to achieve their giving goals. While those goals can be varied, individual attention is given to each donor to maximize his or her charitable giving. We do this primarily through the activity of our approximately 150 funds, and we invite everyone from our region to learn how establishing a fund may enhance their charitable giving. Connecting Donors The Foundation positions itself to learn as much as possible about the charitable activities happening in our community. In 2009, the Foundation also invested in DonorSense, an online tool to help provide objective data about the charitable activity in our area. Our combined expertise and comprehensive data is available to our donors to strengthen their giving decisions. Providing Leadership Community Foundation of Acadiana is broad in its mission and flexible in its activities. If charitable giving can play a role, then Community Foundation of Acadiana can participate in improving our community. In some cases, CFA can provide leadership to help solve a problem or take advantage of an opportunity. Community Foundation of Acadiana is proud to participate in activities which improve our region. Community Foundation of Acadiana focuses its primary grantmaking and charitable services within an eight-parish area: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion. Is working with Community Foundation of Acadiana right for you? If you are interested in charitable giving, Community Foundation of Acadiana is often a great place to start. Whether you need to organize your giving, plan your giving, increase your giving, or solve a community problem through giving, our donor-centric staff can help you meet your giving goals. 4 Board of Directors 2010 David T. The Founders Society of Community Foundation of Acadiana had the foresight to understand what a strong community foundation could do for our region. Each of these entities listed below contributed resources to lay the groundwork for the Foundation’s activities today. As grants and assets increase each year, it is clear that the Foundation fills a need in our community. We extend our continued thanks and appreciation for this group who believed in the organization when it was little more than an idea. There are four primary ways that you can work with Community Foundation of Acadiana to demonstrate your commitment to improving our region through giving. Establish a Fund The primary way Community Foundation Acadiana achieves its mission is through the activity of its funds. Donor-advised funds are the most common type of fund at the Foundation. Donors can establish a fund whose flexibility is unparalleled. Gifts to the fund qualify for an immediate tax deduction and your financial advisor can continue to manage the assets. Donors recommend grants from the fund to any qualified nonprofit, church, or school. Other funds are available to donors as well, including designated agency funds, field of interest funds, and more. Contribute to a Fund The Foundation has over 40 designated and field of interest funds whose donors number many and causes range far and wide. If one of the Foundation’s existing funds meets your charitable objectives, then your gift is leveraged with other donors from the community. For more information about our existing funds, contact our Donor Services staff. Become a Friend of the Community Donors to the Friends of the Community Fund become a part of CFA’s community of stakeholders. A gift to the Foundation’s Friends of the Community Fund supports our infrastructure and sustains our mission to improve the quality of life in our region. For more information, see www.cfacadiana. org/friends. Leave a Legacy How do you want to be remembered? The Community Foundation of Acadiana staff can work with you and your estate planner to satisfy your desire to benefit causes you wish to support. Our donor services staff welcomes the opportunity to discuss options to organize and maximize your giving. 10 DonorSense In 2009, Community Foundation of Acadiana was awarded a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to implement DonorSense for the Acadiana region. DonorSense is an online database of Acadiana nonprofit organizations created to connect donors to the causes they care about and to increase charitable giving in the Acadiana region. The Foundation is excited to announce that DonorSense will be rolled out to the public on June 23, 2010. Each profile includes comprehensive information provided by nonprofit organizations and validated annually by the Foundation staff. Donors can search through objective data on nonprofits, schools and churches to find an organization they care about. Visit www.donorsense.org to learn more. The DonorSense profiling process is open to all nonprofits, schools, and churches in the Acadiana area. If you know of an organization that would like a DonorSense profile, please contact [email protected] or call us at 337.769.4840. Benefits of DonorSense The benefits of this platform are many and will assist organizations and donors in our community in countless ways. For Donors • Makes information about philanthropic causes accessible to everyone • Increases a donor’s knowledge about effective nonprofits so that they can invest in high performing organizations • Encourages charitable giving—and makes online giving easier • Allows donors to sort by interest areas and individual nonprofits For organizations: • Provides an additional online platform for the organization to share its important work • Improves transparency and accountability for the sector as a whole • Allows nonprofits to identify specific needs • Gives organizations a tool from which to self-assess and strategic plan, as well as train board members and volunteers • Advances the sector by creating a rich data set for analyzing needs within the community, as well as identifying collaboration opportunities DonorSense Early Adopters DonorSense Early Adopters are listed on page 24. These organizations were in the first group to complete their profile on DonorSense and we applaud them for their efforts! 11 Year in Review: 2009 Charitable and philanthropic objectives are as varied as the good folks that have them. In 1998, she began concentrating on painting and drawing which led her to show her work and teach in 2003. She currently teaches classes and workshops in New Iberia and Lafayette and travels the country painting en plein air on location. Gwen has also been active in her community by helping nonprofit organizations create events which bring art and music to the people of Acadiana. She just finished working with the St. Landry Parish project “Fiddlemania” and her work on that project encouraged the block prints included in this report. Gwen was married 27 years ago to Alexis Voorhies and they have two wonderful “adult” children, Alexis “C” and Lillian Voorhies.
