Candy, a true inspiration!
In 2013 we will
be 10 years old
and to celebrate
this we will be
hosting a week
of fun. Please
turn to page
eight for exciting details on
how you can be
a part of it!
Wonderful news!
Born in Africa is
tax deductable in
terms of Section
18 of the Income
Tax Act in South
Africa as of
March 2009.
Candy Gadebe is one
of those students who
you will never forget.
Her life “journey” is
what you will call one
of iconic status.
2005
2012
For this reason we have decided to use her story in our new Born in Africa promotion
movie clip which will feature on the newly updated Born in Africa website. The movie
does not replace our current one, but it is only apt to start sharing with you, our patrons,
what your support has meant to us at Born in Africa over the last nine years.
It was Isabelle Brink who spotted Candy Gadebe when she was still at primary school in Harkerville. Candy had just moved from Johannesburg and settled with her mom in Kranshoek. Her
school principal noticed her academic potential, but at the same time knew that without the
necessary financial support Candy’s future was bleak. Candy has been in the programme since
2005 and thanks to the help of the Born in Africa bursary programme she is going to university
next year.
Creating the movie was an enormous amount of fun with Isabelle and Belinda of the Born in
Africa team brainstorming ideas with Wouter Deprez and the expert film crew of Daron Chatz.
We would like to share with you that when a project like this comes along you sit back and take
stock of what your organisation has achieved and for a brief moment you know that you are on
top of the world. This feeling can be compared to what our students feel like when they have
done all they could to do well at school and they get that phone call that says:
“You are in and you are going to study further!”
In Belgium we are
able to hand out
tax return
certificates.
Have a look at our new video: http://vimeo.com/46276640
How can we prepare our students?
In a recent article in a SA leading newspaper, shocking news revealed that 40 out of 100
children reach GR 12. Of these 40 learners only 28 will pass GR 12 and only four of them
will move on to study at university of which one will eventually graduate! If this is not a
wake up call for the students then I don't know what is!
Born in Africa is working hard to change these statistics:
Assistant teachers
Homework classes
We offer our assistant teacher programme were we
subsidise three teacher’s salaries who help the class
teacher by working with smaller groups of children. At
Wittedrift Primary Judy Mintoor has a wonderful bond
with her GR 1 children. Magdalena Jacobs teaches the
GR 3 children at Kranshoek Primary and at Crags
Primary Ronél De Waal works with both GR 1 classes.
75 GR 4, 5 & 6 learners take part in the classes where
they are offered help with homework as further
academic support. Their progress is something to be
admired as well as the bond they have formed.
Study methods and projects
Study bursaries
In total we have six mentors who work with their allocated
students in groups. They work on character building but
also concentrate more and more on school projects.
In total Born in Africa supports 23 students at Wittedrift
High. They are such superstars and are taught in
English and Afrikaans. We are currently busy with our
tertiary applications for 2013 and we are very proud to
announce that so far we have seven applications
complete. In South Africa it is recommended to apply
before July and using your final GR 11 results. Tertiary
Education in South Africa is costly and not easy to
gain entry to as the requirement policies are strict.
Many students find this process daunting and give up.
At Born in Africa we have an Academic Coordinator
whose function it is to complete all applications, handle
all correspondents to and from the universities and
collages as well as care for the wellbeing of the
students during their studies.
Apart from homework centres run by Born in Africa after
school, it is vitally important to assist the older students
with practical methods on how to study for test and exams.
Many of them find it very hard to study at home as there
are an overwhelming amount of distractions. For this
reason we have recently all attended a study method
workshop where our staff were tutored by ex school
principal Andrew Smith on the best ways to pass
examinations. What was so positive about this method is
we
have
this
knowledge and we
are able to pass it on
to all our children in
smaller study circles
while we assist them
with their school
projects.
Our own Library
Thanks to Paul and Lutgarde Meeus’ monthly donations
we have been able to put together a library consisting of
Afrikaans reading books.
This is situated at our home work centers and when the
children have completed their work for the day they can
relax reading a book.
Volunteers changing children’s horizons…
Hi, my name is Siya Tenge. I am a volunteer at Born In
Africa. I am currently on a gap year and am using this
year as a preparation for the world out there. Next year I
want to study Psychology. My dream is to become a
licensed Psychologist and to have my own practice.
I am passionate about helping others. The life that I
have lived has been full of potholes and obstacles. The
journey ahead is still long
but I look forward to the
challenges and rewards that
lie ahead.
Being at Born in Africa is
going to open new doors
and new adventures. I am
loving every moment of it.
Hello, I am Elke De Hertogh and I volunteered with Born
in Africa two years ago. This year I have worked the
whole month of July at Born in Africa during which I did
administrative work, helped with the homework classes
and home visits. What I enjoyed the most was the support I gave to my old school in Kranshoek where I worked
for
4
months
previously.
The
atmosphere there
was fantastic! I
have enjoyed it
and it was very
nice to see everyone again!
Baie Dankie for the
nice experience!
Hi there, my name is Rob
Johnstone and I am from
the United Kingdom. I work
as a volunteer during the
week where I work mostly in
the office on the administration side doing anything
from preparing envelopes
for godparents, entering
data and preparing statistics, filing and laminating to
researching subjects as diverse as "studying law at university" to "building your own braai" and making sandwiches for the camps. I have also been helping a GR 11
student with his English on a weekly basis which I have
thoroughly enjoyed. I will be returning home soon and
will really miss my time with Born in Africa. I would like
to use this opportunity to wish them all the best of luck
for their future plans.
I am Lotte Van Buyten
and returned to Born in
Africa again! I have been
back in South Africa for
four months. I have no
regrets on my decision
and I wake up every morning with a smile to go to
work. I’m floating a bit between the volunteers and
everybody in the office, but
I’m enjoying this position.
I feel like a real part of
Born in Africa. I only have eight months to go, but I’m
definitely not busy with the countdown!
My name is Gilles De Baere and I
am from Belgium. I visited Born in
Africa for a month to experience the
culture and get to learn more about
the problems Born in Africa come
across on a daily basis. During my
stay I had the opportunity to help
with the homework classes, the art &
craft classes and I visited the
schools with Isabelle. I also planted
trees with the Born in Africa children
and was amazed that even though
they are so poor an don't have much
they are still smiling every day.
Thank you Born in Africa for this opportunity. It is an experience that has
truly opened my eyes and from now
on I will be grateful for what I have.
My name is Emma Irvine. I have been
volunteering with the Born in Africa team
for two years. My involvement has been
very varied from unpacking the DHL
container from the Netherlands, reorganising of our garage on many occasions,
assisting with the translation of newsletters, handing out school uniforms,
entering information from home visits in to our database,
advice on strategic planning, work around the Human
Resources aspect of the team and most recently assisting with the Born in Africa ten year celebrations. Sadly I
will also be returning to the UK shortly. I will miss everyone here hugely and thank Isabelle and her team for the
opportunity they gave me to give back and to help others.
It has been rewarding in so many ways!
I am Sandy Graig and I work as a volunteer for BIA. I live in Plettenberg Bay, but I am originally from
the UK. I assist in the BIA office with administration and occasionally I venture out with the other volunteers and help with art and crafts and so forth. I enjoy working with the BIA team as there is always
something new happening.
Born in Africa got green fingers...
We recycle at the Art & Crafts classes
A total of 30 GR 7 & 8 Crags Primary learners took
part in a fantastic recycling workshop hosted by
Jasper, one of the Belgian volunteers. The group of
learners experienced lessons in magic, took part in
a series of dancing lessons and learnt the art of
origami. They made items such as vases, wallets
and bracelets out of recycled materials. The group
enjoyed working together and showed such team
spirit. So inspiring! They turned up at each lesson
and when it was time to pack up the majority of
them stayed an hour longer!
We are starting our own vegetable garden!
Many of our children are not fed.
There is no food in
the house and they
often have to go
and
beg
neighbours
for
food. Born in Africa
decided to teach
our children how to
produce their own
food by starting their own vegetable garden, whether it
be for their personal consumption or to generate additional income at home.
The GR 6-9 pupils in Kranshoek are the first group to
participate in this programme which we picture as an
ongoing one. The proverb “Give a man a fish and you
feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed
him for a lifetime.” is one which we are putting into
reality. Watch this space to see this garden grow!
Greening Day Kurland Village
Born in Africa is very proud to have been part of the
“Greening Day” in Kurland Village in June 2012.
Wesley Andrew, Born in Africa Education Coordinator set out with his team of volunteers Jasper, Gilles
and Rob and joined the Crags Primary GR 7, 8 and
9 in planting a total of a 130 indigenous trees. Other
organisations who took part were Nature’s Valley
Trust, SANParks, Bitou Municipality, DAFF,
Working for Water, Working for the Coast, Redford
Conservancy, Southern
Crags Conservancy, Local
Rugby and Soccer Clubs
and Food for Waste Project. Well done to all!
The Puzzle Park
Who says you can’t have fun during the winter holidays? At Born in Africa that is what we do! A total of
50 Born in Africa boys and girls from Kranshoek, Wittedrift and Crags joined an outing to Plett Puzzle Park
situated in the Crags where they could have fun with
their friends in a safe environment.
Grade 4, 5 & 6 exciting camps...
A total of 90 Born in Africa girls from Harkerville,
Wittedrift, Crags and Kranshoek took part in the
Olympic Games camp held at the beautiful Southern Comfort ranch in Harkerville. We are so proud
as the two camps each had a 100% attendance
rate which just goes to show that we know how to
have a good time with our children on camp!
Wesley and his team of volunteers ensured the
groups took part in a variety of Olympic sports
working in teams and with the weather still holding
up they all had a great time. They also got to learn
about the ancient Greek history and how the Olympic games originated. Well done to all who did an
excellent job.
Another bus from the Rotary!
We could not have chosen a more picturesque day
when our brand new “out of the box” BIA bus arrived,
courtesy of Rotary Plettenberg Bay, AntwerpenAmerloo, Asse, Düsseldorf-Shlossturm & Tervuren.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr. Reinhard Schydlo,
Peter Pretorius, Bart Joosten, Vincianne Vander Heyden, our Chairman Remi De Backer and all the other
Rotarians involved we can now call our new Toyota
Quantum our youngest staff member!
The bus will be used to transport children to educational
camps, outings, swimming lessons and career guidance
outings just to name a few. This is the second bus we
have acquired thanks to the help of the Rotary and we
are incredibly grateful to finally have two very safe and
reliable vehicles to use as transportation. The gathering
took place in front of the Born in Africa offices with our
new bus patiently waiting in the background to undertake its maiden trip filled with happy singing children.

BIA embraced by the
Western Cape Education Department...
On 14 May 2012 the Born in Africa team visited the
Western Cape Education Department in Knysna. The
meeting which was held to celebrate Born in Africa’s
involvement in the local schools and communities.
Discussions focused on the need for our organisation to
continue working with the youth during after school
activities such as the homework centers, art & craft
classes, swimming lessons, camps and holiday outings.
Mr. Olivier, the school Psychologist, affirmed an urgent
need for Occupational Therapists and Speech
Therapists and assured us that he would link them to
his programme. They also requested that we continue
supporting our teachers’ assistants, commended the
work they deliver and the importance of their
programme. Isabelle Brink informed the members of our
soon to be 10 year anniversary which they were incredibly impressed by in addition to the wonderful support
we receive from abroad.
Overall they were very pleased with BIA and declared
that they would very much like to work with us in the
future.
Isabelle is one of the nominees...
Congratulations to Isabelle De
Smul - Brink, our Born in Africa
Director, who has been selected as
one of the five nominees by the
Junior
Chamber
International
(JCI). She was nominated for: ‘The
Outstanding Young Persons of the
World’ (TOYP) in Belgium for 2012.
The TOYP programme serves to formally recognise
young people who excel in their chosen fields and
exemplify the best attributes of the world's young
people.
Honorees that are selected have represented the
heights of progress in numerous human endeavors.
The event will take place in Hasselt (Belgium) on 22
September 2012.
Should Isabelle be selected as one of the 15 international nominees, she will be invited by the JCI to
their world congress which will take place in Taipei,
Taiwan from 18 to 23 November. The nominees will
be announced on 30 September.
Cross your fingers folks!
A Happy Birthday to ...

Welcome to our new website!
Soon our new website will be up and running. Karl and Kathleen
Leenknegt - Buffels set up our original website and although it was very
functional and user friendly it became difficult to update it on a regular
basis with them now living back in Belgium. For practical reasons we
took the plunge and approached a Plett based company who very
kindly took over the Born in Africa website.
You will find that it is just as user friendly as before and due to adequate training, and with the assistance of our website managers
around the corner, we are now able to update it on a daily basis. This is
very important when your company is almost 10 years old and you
need to keep up with the times!
Happy viewing to all our readers at www.borninafrica.org. You will find
all the answers you are looking for such as information on our 10 year
anniversary, success stories, how to donate, information on volunteering and much more.
Thank you!
Marie-Paule Smet celebrated her 60th birthday recently
with her friends and family. Her birthday wish was for all
gifts to be donated toward the BIA studyfund. As a result
of the donations received, many more students can study
next year. Thank you so much
We are so lucky to have such wonderful ambassadors! Remi
De Backer (chairman of BIA SA) and his wife Lieve have been
very busy during the last couple of months. They travelled the
entirity of Belgium spreading the word of Born in Africa. They started at the studio of “TV Oost”, a Belgium television channel, then
moved on to the Rotary Clubs in Tervuren, Dusseldorf (Germany),
Asse, Lokeren and Marnixring Lokeren, Lions Club Lokeren and
Inner Wheel Geraardsbergen – Oudenberg. Thank you to all of
those organisations for your hospitality, enthusiasm and dontations
and for making Remi and Lieve feel so welcome.
This year Holland was tops again! Under the
guidance of Chantal Van Summeren the biggest “Good Cause” Day was organised
through Maaswaal College in Wijchen.
Thanks to this incredible day a total amount of
€12.450 was raised. What an incredible institution! They showcased the many talents of their
students as the central theme and lots of art was
on display, dramas were performed and the
entire school was transformed into a grand café
with each class selling yummy goodies and craft
items. Well done guys!
The NPO Rust- en Verzorgingshuizen Hasselt-TongerenRiemst and Dolf Wieërs decided to donate an amount of €2500
towards the training of a nurse in the BIA program. This will certainly pave the way for one of our students!
Foreign Rotary Clubs gathered together for a fundraising event in
aid of the Born in Africa studyfund. Rotary friends from Kluisbergen (Vlaamse Ardennen – Belgium), Oss (Holland) and Sussex
(England) were very proud when they handed a cheque of €6000
to Remi De Backer on Mother’s Day!
Kiki Hendrick from Holland contacted her employers
(Sterrebosch out Wijchen) and requested them to donated their
yearly Christmas gift of €750 to BIA. They agreed immediately and
with this kind donation we are able to supply our Wittedrift High
students with stationary. We are also be able to assist our children
with eye care and dental care.
Daisy & Hedwig Taelmans’ children secretly organised
a birthday party for their parents and donated all the
gifts received to Born in Africa. Wonderful, thank you for
the €705.
Thanks to Wilma Van Bronkhorst from Beuningen the children
from the Crags crèche are getting yummy milk with their porridge.
In the name of the children we offer you a heartfelt thank you.
BIA also received €1750 as a result of the “Fasting walkethon” in
Buggenhout. Thank you Iris Van de Velde for keeping BIA in
mind for this project every year.
Leigh Dunn (South African teacher) & Georges De Smul (chairman
BIA Belgium) visited the Lutgardiscollege in Oudergem and gave
a presentation on BIA projects. The students were so motivated
that they arranged a hike which raised €1200 for Born in Africa.
Thank you.
Playing golf for a good cause is what Remi and Lieve De Backer
and the Oudenaarde Golf Club do best! They managed to raise
an amount of €1900! A lot of wine was sold as well thanks to Roger
De Smedt (Wijnhandel De Smet) and Georges De Smul. What
fantastic teamspirit.
Every year we can count on our young godparents Sofie, Jan &
Baekelandt and their family as well as Hilde De Baets and her
team. They managed to sell 580 ice creams, lots of food and drinks
as well as other items at the flea market in aid of
Born in Africa. Thank you for the €1365.
Albert Peusens turned 65 years old and donated
all the gifts towards the BIA studyfund. With .€1100
so much can be realised.
Special thanks goes out to: fam. Vandermarliere, Leona De
Smet, Fons Cools, Fam. De Schouwer, fam. Poelmans, Van
Den Eynde-Lemmens, fam. Bogaert-Verlinden, fam. Vandenabeele,
fam.
Hollanders,
fam.
Bocchini,
fam.
Moers-Scheepmans and fam. Meeus-Verheyen for their
monthly donations. Your support is highly appreciated.
The Sint-Ursula Institute in Wilrijk completed a whole year of
fundraising for BIA. Our volunteers Sharon Willems and Ben
Daems collected the cheque €6000 Euros. Thank you!
The benefit concert of the Rotary
Club Coudenberg Brussels was
brilliantly organised and their godchild will be able to attend school for
the next three years! Thank you for
the amazing gesture goes to Laurent
Baeke -Chairman Rotary Brussels
Coudenberg, Steven Van Ackere
Minister of finance Belgium, Georges
De Smul and Remi De Backer.
Elke Ijzerman, Inge Mommaerts and Laura Vereecken
are responsible for the selection of new volunteers
traveling to BIA South Africa. Currently they are busy
with selections for 2013. This takes so much time and
they do such a fantastic job. Well done. Over the past 9
years we have had more than 136 volunteers
Thank you to Lieve Platteau, Christine Lernout and
Wilfried Vande Velde for ensuring the 900 tax certificates were completed. Your work for yet the third time
was excellent.
Thank you Arlette Vanheule - De Smul, mother of
Isabelle and boardmember, for sorting out all the
letters for the godparents who are paying yearly.

10 Year Born in Africa Anniversary festivities
Attention Born in Africa Godparents, friends and family. This is your time to shine and enjoy what you have achieved
during the past 10 years by joining Born in Africa in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa for our 10 year birthday which will
take place between the 25th and 28th March 2013. We have put together a jam-packed week filled with Born in Africa
activities and will kick off with a short gathering at the Born in Africa head office. We will then head out to the Crags
Primary school where we will visit Born in Africa projects, meet the children and visit their homes. Our first day will
end off with an eventful parent meeting in the Crags. Without saying
much more, the remainder of the week will include visits to
Kranshoek, Wittedrift High and we will end off the celebrations with a
massive parade through Plettenberg Bay with all 400+ Born in Africa
children who will be then given the opportunity to show off their
talents. Further details and accommodation information etc can be
found at www.borninafrica.org or on Facebook at borninafrica vzw.
You can also contact Remi De Backer directly (details below)
You folks all deserve a medal!
Born in Africa would like to commend, recognise and award Marie-Paule
Smet and Luc Seeuws with an Honorary members title as they have done
so much for Born in Africa. Since we established the Study Bursary programme three years ago, they have been supporting our students whole
heartedly. What is so incredible is that we can already share with them the
fruits of their labor. What a remarkable couple!
Marie-Paule & Luc Seeuws in company of our Born in Africa Chairman
(South Africa) Remi De Backer and his wife Lieve
It was a beautiful day when Henk and Jacqueline completed their quest to
Compostella. The historical and famous hike took 66 days to complete and
covered a distance of 1.550 km. They were welcomed back in Belgium by
George De Smul, his wife Arlette, friends and family. This is the first time in
the history of Born in Africa that two godparents took on such a challenge
and it was only apt for Uncle George to bid them a hearty welcome. The
couple are thrilled with the 2,500 Euros collected during the initiative.
Jacqueline Stilmant en Henk Koning walked 1.550 km for Born in Africa.
