I. Charleval en Provence
History of Charleval :
Born from the desire of a man, Caesar de Cadenet, Charleval was built in front of his castle, in a near
perfect alignment. The City Hall, the schools and the old station offer a harmonious, Republican style.
An originality that distinguishes Charleval from the most beautiful towns in the Bouches du Rhône.
Origin of the name "Charleval"
The origins date back to the eleventh century with the creation of the domain of Valbonette This
domain was acquired in 1473 by King René, a few years before the annexation of the Provence in
France (1481). During the mid-16th century, the lower area of Valbonette is built in fee in favour of
the house Arquier by Charles of Lorraine. In recognition, the place became known as "Valley of
Charles”. What existed at that time? Almost nothing, six families lived there (of which only two in
houses) and agricultural lands were limited by a huge forest.
Charleval’s birth :
In 1677, François de Cadenet, great grandfather of Cesar de Cadenet, acquired the lordship and over a
century the families Cadenet and Mons were the principal landowners of Charleval, but nothing
changes, Charleval is still a wasteland as it remains uncleared. It is only in 1740 that Caesar de
Cadenet, then aged 32, begins to build a town probably in order to grow its land.
He began to call on the families of nearby villages: 66 of them respond, mostly from La Roque
d'Anthéron. The majority were poor peasants. There were only two merchants, one notary and one
doctor. The first Charlevalois sheltered in huts made of dirt before building their houses "lurking"
perfectly aligned, according to the plans of Caesar de Cadenet. Caesar resided in his Charleval castle
from 1756 until just before his death in 1763, where he died in Lambesc at the age of 55, blind and
helpless by the inhabitants of Charleval. He was buried in the family tomb in the chapel of Trinity in
Lambesc.
Charleval is ideally located at the crossroads of four departments:
Bouches du Rhone, Vaucluse, The Alps de Haute Provence and the Var.

CESAR CADENET’s CASTLE
In Charleval
If Charleval now offers a pleasant view and an atmosphere so suitable to serenity in its
plane trees and flowers in the streets in almost perfect alignment, it is thanks to César
de Cadenet whose statue thrones again above its fountain, in the centre of the
crossroads between the town hall, church, and castle.
In 1740, he took the hunting lodge that his great-grandfather had bought in 1677. He
resided there from 1756 until his death in 1763. He reclaimed and cultivated the land and
built a village in an "American" style.
This pavilion was transformed over the years by successive owners.
It is unknown what the pavillion looked like originally, but the castle is built in Renaissance
style. It is very elegant, well proportioned, with a roof of slate which is rare for the
Provence, nicely highlighted by a frieze with trefoil motifs, reminiscent of the flamboyant
style. Four turrets surround the building located in a park.
Take your time to look at the windows where various figures sometimes human, sometimes
animal are watching.
Closed to visit.
“CANAL DE CRAPONNE”
The Craponne Canal is a canal located in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône and connects
the Rhône with the Durance. The original purpose of the cannel was to bring water to Salonde-Provence and the plain of the Crau. It was then extended up to Arles. It branches with
the Pond of Berre forming an island below Salon-de-Provence. It owes its name to the
engineer Adam Craponne who designed and started its implementation. Adam Craponne met
Antoine de Cadenet (the ancestor of Caesar) in 1568. Signing of irrigation agreement: the
"Canal de Craponne" runs through Charleval, in exchange for a little bit of water for the
castle. In 1571 excavation work took place. The water shakes up the habits and nature of the
cultures. The water for our consumption comes from the Durance. It is retained by the dam
Cadarache and flows into the Canal EDF. At the level of the powerhouse Saint Esteve Janson,
the water then joins the Canal of Marseille. The canal Craponne serves the storm sewer.
Upon its origin, the Craponne canal served as the "engine" to the mill. The building still
retains traces of the water wheel which operated the machine. It presently functions as a
Municipal Library.

MASSIF CHAINES DES COTES
The length of the massif is 10 km from Cazan to La Roque-d'Anthéron, and its width is 6 km from
Lambesc to Charleval. Its highest point peaks at 482 m, but is usually given to the plateau Sèze,
479 m, or to Manivert, which is a little more up north. There was a massive fire in the area from
29 to 31 July 2003 at le level of Lambesc, destroying 500 hectares. 19 firefighters were injured,
one succumbed to his injuries

The chain of Côtes forms a more compact limestone cliff, facing the Luberon beyond the
Durance. This massif rises to 482 m and stands as a string stretched in a generally east-west
direction in between the plain Durance and the plain Lambesc. It is characterized by a
particularly rough ground, especially in the North Slope, giving it a mountain aspect which you
can only pass via the D67 and the plateau of Malivert. It is extended by the small mountains
of Saint-Esteve and the Quille, forming a succession of small hills that are a bit looser, with
soft shapes that go from the Bassin Saint-Christophe to the plateau Trévaresse. Peaking at
482m high, this part of the mountain chain is oriented in a North-West/ South-East
direction. The only way around it is via the D66 that connects Saint-Estève Janson to Rognes.
Access to the site
Between June 1 and September 30, access to the forests is regulated by the
prefecture, for your safety and the preservation of vulnerable sites. Before going this
area for a visit, please call 0811 20 13 13. This way you’ll be able to know every day
whether the site you wish to visit is accessible all day, open only in the morning, or
entirely closed. Depending on weather conditions the danger level of forest fires
(orange-red-black) is available the next day at 6pm.
WALK ALONG THE « CANAL DE
MARSEILLE »
The Provence has experienced many problems during the past related to lack of water.
In the eyes of Marseille, the canal remains an institution and especially the work of many men including
Frantz Mayor Montricher. The realisation of the canal revolutionised the world of agriculture. Thanks
to the canal the city was able to develop and also significantly increase its population.
Today, the drinking water supply of Marseille is still the iconic
Canal de Marseille, which is regularly updated over the years.

The Marseille canal is the main source of drinking water for the city of Marseille. With a
length of 80 km for the main part (160 km with branches in town), it serves the whole of
Marseille. It was built during the mid-nineteenth century in fifteen years under the
management of engineer Franz Mayor de Montricher, bringing water from the Durance in
the city since July 8, 1849. It represents a significant achievement of engineering of the
nineteenth century by combining numerous infrastructure, bridges, tunnels, reservoirs, etc..
Until 1970 it was almost the unique source of water supply of the city of Marseille, it still
provides two-third of the water resources of the city.

MALLEMORT
Established in the Roman era, from the dawn of our era Mallemort takes its name from the dark
Middle Ages where the robbery in the forests and swamps surrounding the plain marked the site of
the "bad death". Salvation has come from the Durance and an ingenious irrigation system was
conceived during the XVIth century by Adam Craponne. Once the plain became fertilized the
agriculture began in the village in the early twentieth century.

year on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
EYGUIERES
« L’aigo fai veni poulit » “Water creates beauty” in the language of the Provence: this sentence taken
from Frédéric Mistral is the one from Eyguières, at the door of the Alpilles. Between Crau and
Durance three sources irrigate the village: the Gilouse, the Borme and Fontvieille. In a guided or free
tour, Eyguières delivers it’s secret in a 10 places circuit.

Today it is a touristic, pedestrian village; Pont Royal was once a hamlet which origins belong to the
middle Ages. Around the thirteenth century, Vernègues’ mill was the grist mill of the manor and later
the local roadhouse to carriages. King René used to hunt on the lands around, whose 180 hectares are
now used for recreational sports.

PELISSANNE
Pélissane is a crossroads of trade routes: the Aurelian road tracks Cotes, Redourtière and then
connects the city to the great Roman cities (some sections are still visible today). During the sixteenth
century the agriculture of the region experiences resurgence thanks to the Craponne Canal. Pelissanne
flourished beyond its fortifications: absorbed in beautiful mansions that were built during the
following centuries, the walls of the fifteenth century give the heart of the village its circular shape.

oil mill. Old and new installations can be visited on request. Olive oil 6 times gold medalist in
France.
LA BARBEN
Largely wooded and quiet village, Barben blossomed from the shores of the Touloubre around a small
town where the market fills the streets every week. The history of the place seems to be linked for
eternity to the castle which stands on a rocky outcrop for a millennium already, two kilometers to the
east.
To see:

Zoo: the largest zoo in Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur offers the public nearly 400 animals from
around the world over the 9km of trails in a beautiful park of 33 ha. Many educational
activities in the program.
VENERGUES
The Grand Puech plateau overlooking the village is over 7000 years old and witnessed the coming and
going of men in Venèrgues. On June 11th 2009, almost everything is destroyed by a violent earthquake
that shook the Provence. The new village is built just below.

AURONS
11 centuries old, Aurons has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was a Roman camp in antiquity.
Much of its history lurks in the ruins of the castle Castellas. Built in the tenth century, it has had a
turbulent history with many owners and two locations: on the rock until the wars of religions, and below
the village where only two towers and a colonnade remain.

SALON-DE-PROVENCE
The Empery Castle dominates the rising city that is surrounded by its walls in the seventeenth
century. During the Renaissance, Adam Craponne designed and dug a canal which brings the water from
the Durance to Salon. During the twentieth century it became a major site of attractions of the
county, while writing its own definition of well-being and lifestyle.

The subterranean cave will attract your curiosity as well as the Museum of Art basketry. You should
know that the culture has permitted for wicker basketry to develop successfully until 1978. Some
craftsmen still inhabit in the village and will be delighted to show you their work.
The name Cadenet comes from Candellence... it is perched at 182m in the heart of the Luberon. The
village has a castle (site) where you get a panoramic view of the Durance, the Luberon, Saint Victoire
and the Alpilles. It is now a cultural centre and an exhibition venue, its outdoor theatre offers very
lovely musical evenings that are “"so freshl" as they say here...

LOURMARIN
In a place surrounded by vineyards, olive and almond trees lies the village of Lourmarin labeled "one of
the most beautiful villages in France". Very busy in the summer with its many sidewalk cafes,
restaurants and Provence shops, Lourmarin is one of the leading villages of the Luberon.
Lourmarin has a castle from the fifteenth and sixteenth century which is worth visiting for its curious
staircases and beautifully furnished apartments (only the Renaissance part of the castle is open to the
public)
In the village you will be struck by the typical Mediterranean architecture site : narrow winding
streets, beautiful old facades restored with local materials and always a little shady square where you
can soak up the fresh air of the Provence.
The people like to point out that Albert Camus, Nobel Prize for literature, lived and wrote here. He is
also buried in the village cemetery. Needless to say that with Lourmarin already being so enchanting,
the castle is a “must-see”.

GORDES
This village can be proud of being one of the most beautiful villages of France, with its cobbled streets
that make way through tall houses built into the rock, clinging onto its flanks and telling a thousand
stories and legends. Gordes is also proud of its superb castle in the heart of the village, reminding us
of a past rich of conquests as well as suffering and which now houses the Pol Mara Museum and the
City Hall. Gordes also extends its territory: the Bories village, those curious igloo-shaped dry stones,
Abbey Sénanque in its green valley, the mill of Boullion and the cellars of the Saint Firmin Palace.

BONNIEUX
The village is characterized by its two churches, ramparts, the old town hall of the hotel Rouvil,
remarkable number of streets and ancient buildings, all giving a unique character to Bonnieux. In
addition there is the famous Bridge Julien, built in the Augustan period (27 BC -.. 14 AD) on the
Domitian road - called "camin ROUMIEU" - and on the ridge the cedar forest which provides the
coolness in summer. In short, there is a big variety of sites, both natural and historical.
Bonnieux is one of the most beautiful villages of the north side of the Luberon. Some call it “Mont
Saint-Michel in Provence." It is part of the golden triangle Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, but unlike his
two partners, it is not as know or as busy, which makes the gain authenticity.
APT
Apt is located in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Luberon, between the mountains of the
Vaucluse and the Luberon mountain. This charming, typically Provencal town is renowned for the quality
of the products of its ground, Apt has the honour of being rated "outstanding-taste site", and it is the
world capital of candied-fruit.
Apt will captivate you with the charm that emanates small streets of the old city: ancient fountains,
mansions and small shaded squares are part of the decor...
In the background you have the landscape of the Luberon hills tinged with ochre and lavender scented,
with the singing cicadas who remind you that it is hot.
ISLE SUR LA SORGUE
Called the "Venice of the Vaucluse" L'Isle sur la Sorgue is one of the most attractive cities in the
PACA region thanks to the exceptional nature of its environment. It draws its attraction from the
Sorgue, a river which source never dried up.
Celebrated by the greatest poets from Petrarch to René Char, the Sorgue is above all a symbol of
successful cohabitation between men and nature. It is indeed on the banks of the river, in the river
and around that the water wheels, docks, streets and alleys, churches and chapels, not to forget the
fishermen and their strange boats called "Nego-Chin" (which literally means "a dog drowning"), rise
majestically.
The boutiques, galleries, René Char House installed in the hotel Campredon, the mecca of culture, and
of course the antiquity. All these ingredients maintain the myth of the phenomenon "L'Isle sur la
Sorgue."
FONTAINE DE VAUCLUSE
As we approach the mythical source of Fontaine de Vaucluse, visitors agree on a place of secular
pilgrimage. Reaching the end of the trail overlooking the gulf, they appoint the Fountain as sacred.
With a total average flow of 630 million m3 per year, the source is the first in France, and one of the
largest in the world, by volume of water. It results from the emergence of a vast underground
network. Cool and quiet source summer, surging and impetuous in spring and autumn, Fontaine de
Vaucluse, a true freak of nature, keeps researchers and curious minds interested since antiquity.
Water bound to Fontaine de Vaucluse comes from the infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt south of
Mont Ventoux, the Monts de Vaucluse and Montagne de Lure who represent a "catchment area" of
1240 km ² and whose only outcome is the Fountain.
AIX EN PROVENCE
Aix-en-Provence (Aix until 1932) is the historical capital of the Provence. Its story starts with
the submission to the Romans of Salyens, a Gallic federation of several peoples of Lower Provence.
In 124 BC., the Roman consul Gaius Sextius Calvinus created the city of Aquae Sextiae. This is the
Roman city that became Aix.
Situated on a strategic axis between Italy and
Spain (on the via Domitia), Aix allows the
Roman Empire to secure an entire region from
being captured by the Salyens. Around the
same time, Aix grows and takes on the
characteristics of a Roman city. It adopts a
forum, theater, baths and aqueducts.
The third century is marked by the onset of
population decline in Aquae Sextiae. Aix is where the archdiocese was created, which gives it a
prominent position throughout the Middle Ages, confirmed by the creation of a University (1409)
and shortly after the annexation to France, the Parliament of the Provence (1501).
MARSEILLE
Oldest city in France, founded under the name of Massalia around 600 BC by Greek sailors from
Phocaea, Marseille is an important commercial port since the antiquity. Trading mainly with the
Levant and North Africa during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Marseille became an industrial
city and the main port to the French colonies during the nineteenth century. It is still the first
French and Mediterranean port and the fourth port in Europe.
The historical importance of nautical business and trade is still visible in its population, and mainly
in migratory waves (Italian and North Africa in particular), as well as in its architecture and
culture (development of the port in Joliette, a neighbourhood of Marseille, and brownfield sites in
the north and east).
Suffering from economic difficulties from the 1960s after decolonization, as well as a bad
reputation due to his great crime and security problems, the city knows an urban, economic and
cultural revival since the late 1990s. It is now the subject of a Euro-Mediterranean project which
is one of the largest urban operations in Europe, the headquarters of the World water Council and
was the European Capital of Culture in 2013.

The castle of if used to be an ancient fortress and prison and is presently an essential site located on an
island off the coast of Marseille
The Castle of If, built by the orders of François I between 1527 and 1529, was originally intended for
military purposes. However, since it is located on the islands of Friuli in the harbour of Marseille it quickly
turned into a prison and it stayed that way for 400 years. The fort itself is a square whose walls are 28

Maugovert. The cells at the base of the building had a life expectancy of nine months, affluent prisoners
were able to afford better quality cells on the first floor. You can visit the cells of the most famous residents
of the castle, even the one of Edmond Dantes, the fictitious hero of Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of
Monte Christo or that of the man in the iron mask. In addition to the historical and cultural character, the
site offers a breath-taking view of Marseille, its harbour and the islands of Friuli. Located 15 minutes by

Introduction
2 km from the village of Fuveau, come visit the butterfly museum. 40 years of passion and entomological
collections and 20 years of adventures across the globe allow you today to discover the wonders of our
world: Thailand, Ceylon, Indonesia, Africa, the Amazon, so many countries that were crossed to bring us
colourful butterflies and huge beetles. 8000 Strange and unusual insects are shown during a 1h30 visit.
Much of the collection (60%) consists of insects that are born in these countries. To do this, eggs from a
female in nature are taken and kept for breeding. It is necessary to have botanical knowledge because each
butterfly or beetle lays its eggs on a very precise plant and it is therefore necessary to find a close relative
of the tropical plant in France. Teaching boxes allow everyone to understand the cycle of insects.

Elevation: 238 m
Itinerary 4 : Charleval, La Roque d'Anthéron, Lambesc, autour de
Silvacane
Departure : Charleval
Cities visited : La Roque d'Anthéron, Lambesc
Distance : 31km
At the northern edge of the county, this road between plains and hills offers a spectacular mix of
architecture and landscapes of the Provence. On one side there are the vegetable and fruit fields
of the Valley of the Durance, large farms, open villages, and its Cistercian abbey. On the other side
you can find the pine hills of the chaîne of Cotes, which is a group of hills. To deserve such a
panorama, a little exercise is necessary. The itinerary, a round of 31 km from the village of
Charleval (D561, 5km west of La Roque d'Anthéron) requires in its upper part a tough climb.
II. Walking Tours (cf. Chareval’s office of tourism)
 1. “Chaine des Côtes” - Durance side
Departure: Charleval
Distance: 12.4km
A village with streets laid out in blocks as in New York! This is the incongruity of Charleval, the
atypical village of the Durance which breaks with the usual pattern of the Provencal villages.
Developed in the 18th century during the cultivation of alluvial land, Charleval and its
"agricultural" terraced houses are the starting point for a hike in the heart of the ancient
municipality: the forest and the hills. Valleys, wooded slopes, ridges, hidden in these folds are two
beautiful manors: Valbonnette and Bonneval-Taillades. The first was attached to Silvacane Abbey
and the second holds its reputation for the rearing of silkworms in the 19th century. This is just
one of the attractions of the route, well equipped with lookouts that confirm the close integration
of nature and heritage of a prodigal with the needs of the modern world: At the east is located the
old village of Vernègues and the TGV-viaduct, the golf domain of Pont Royal with its relief
background of the Alpilles, south of the Luberon behind the fertilized lands of the Durance.
 2. Vernègues, a stroll around the village
Cities visited: Vernègues
Distance: 14km
Small relief between Alpilles and Luberon, the mountain chain of Côtes is undoubtedly one of the
most secret ones of the county. The village of Vernègues is well adapted to sightseeing trips, its
old agricultural architecture and tranquillity stayed intact. Did you know that the 1909 earthquake
in Lambesc caused some serious damage in Vernègues? The old village of Vernègues testifies with
its tangled ruins in which a medieval castle rises, parts of a church and some cellar arches. As
surprising as the rest is the necropolis with a dozen of tombs and sarcophagi dating from the
Middle Ages, facing the Luberon. Below there is the new Vernègues. Built after the earthquake, it
displays an unusual urbanism, with low terraced houses and perfectly straight streets. And when
you know that around the village remain ancient cultivated terraces, dry stone walls and old olive
groves and vineyards, all you have to do is enjoy and explore this unknown and authentic
Provencal place.
 3. « Massif des Roques »
Departure : Salon de Provence
Distance : 5km
With the discovery of Mediterranean flora and the remains of the pastoral and agricultural life of
the past, you can explore the pastoral farm, the bancaus, the Bories and flag of the Commander of
Suffren, among others.
 4. « Chaine des Cotes - La Roque d'Antheron, le
vallon de la Baume et le vallon de Castellas »
Cities visited : La Roque d'Anthéron
Distance : 13km
« Qui va piano va sano ». This could be the motto of the followers of this route traced on the land
of the most famous international piano festival. In the summer the piano lovers create a musical
atmosphere in the castle of Florans, while the more anonymous aesthetes savour the unknown
treasures of the village hidden in the rugged hills, at a slow pace. The Abbey of Silvacane imposes
its severe beauty of the Cistercian rigour without excuses. While ascending the hillside, you’ll find
the freshness of a canal (“the canal of Marseille”), the shade of the pines, the chaos of the rocks of
Castellas, medieval ruin, the traces of an old mule route ... With all the fresh air and broad view
over the Luberon, the Ventoux, the Durance and the Mont Sainte-Victoire and the “chaîne de
l'Etoile”. The best visit for sightseeing and staying in shape at the same time!
 5. Alpilles - Mouriès in the heart of a Grove
Cities visited : Aureille, Mouriès
Distance : 19km
This is a route that will connect the hikers to the classic agricultural images of the Provence! This
easy walk goes from west to east along the southern slopes of the Alpilles between the villages of
Mouriès and Aureille, a land shaped by men with its culture of olives, vines and fruit trees. The
walk mainly takes place around Destet, surrounded by pine forests and scrubland which is known
for drought but will surprise you with sudden fertility. A bit farther away you’ll find the Gémon
plain, dominated by olive tree parcels. It is situated in the village called Aureille which is
recognizable
by
its
church
with
an
open-work
bell
tower.
 6. La Sainte Victoire
Symbol of the Provence, Mont Ventoux, the Sainte-Baume and Aix en Provence, muse of
Cézanne.
Mont Sainte-Victoire rises to 1011 m.
This is a walk site that can be explored by all its terraced pathways. A religious heritage offers
several stages during your walks: the priory Sainte-Victoire, built in the seventeenth century,
Saint-Ser Hermitage, a wonderful landscape of the Provence around a small chapel built in the
extension of a cave to perpetuate the memory of a hermit of the fifth century who came to seek
refuge in these places, the Croix de Provence, perched on the western tip of the massif. At the
peak of the Flies, the highest peak, an extraordinary panorama embraces the horizons of the
Provence and the rolling plains of the Land of Aix. On a clear day you can see the sea, the Mont
Ventoux and the Alps.
To see the two faces of Sainte-Victoire, follow the road that circles the mountain. On the south
side, the sharp hillsides dominate the river “Arc” . North, the terrain falls gently into a series of
limestone plateaus: Bibémus, the Cengle and Pallières. Great views, walk departure points,
charming villages succeed each other: the Tholonet, Beaurecueil (the most beautiful view over the
mountain) and Saint-Antonin-sur-Bayon bathed in nature, Puyloubier and Pourrieres surrounded
by vineyards, Vauvenargues stretched along a green valley.
