Vol 4 Issue 2 27 May 2011 SIS SPECIALTY Maths Whizzes It was an April of number crunching as SIS students participated in several mathematics contests, with positive results. On 9th April, Lai Pui Shan, Lee Xueh Qi, Pan Xiang Jing and Theofani Ella Bethania Lawono participated in Sunway University’s A-Levels Maths and Logic Challenge. The students wrote individual papers in Round 1, and worked in pairs in Round 2 to solve challenging math problems. Our students competed against 410 students from all over Malaysia. Success was sweet for Pan Xiang Ming who was a top 20 finisher in the individual competition. From 11th -13th April, nearly 60 students sank their numeracy ‘teeth’ in the University of Waterloo Mathematics Competitions. Grade 7 and 8 students attempted the Gauss Competition, while our Grade 9, 10 and 11 students tackled the Fryer, Galois & Hypatia competitions. We are eagerly waiting for the results to be released by the University of Waterloo. We thank Ms. Data for coordinating our participation in these competitions. Reported by Mr Avila ([email protected]) SIS ‘Stars’ shine on Performance Night The stars came out on 21st April, and oh, did they shine! Take a look at the talented crop of budding artists that delivered an unforgettable SIS Performance Night. Mr. Gregory , co-organiser with Ms. Shannon, of all the talent shows at SIS, delivered his swansong to a misty-eyed audience with the poignant words, “Through all the Open Mics and Performance Nights, Thanks for the soundtrack.” Thank you, Mr. Gregory & Ms. Shannon! You’re our Inspiration! Vol 4 Issue 2 27 May 2011 HAPPENINGS @ SIS HOUSE Celebrations! SIS House had reason to celebrate as we welcomed the new Resident Executive, Ms. Noreda Mohd. Nor. Ms. Noreda has quickly taken to the students, describing them as “intelligent, creative and talented.” At the monthly SIS House birthdays celebrations, Ms. Noreda was impressed with the performances from the boarders. This was an initiative introduced recently, where boarders who were gifted in music were given the opportunity to perform for their housemates. With every celebration, the boarders look forward to the merriment and the occasion to bond over delicious food and treats. Ms. Noreda summarises aptly, “At SIS House we get to mingle with different cultures and languages, up-close and in person. There is no substitute for having our meals together, helping each other and learning to live with different personalities and characters in a peaceful and secure environment.” Ms. Noreda concludes, “I am looking forward to contributing creatively to serve the students and the House for more activities as I progress with them. My goal is to expose the students to new and productive experiences, and through that, continue the students’ learning at SIS.” Ms. Noreda can be reached at [email protected] and her mobile (+6)019 3802505 for any enquiries. Reported by Mr. Avila ([email protected]) Carey Island Mangrove Research Centre On 28th April, the Grade 11 Biology class went on a field trip to the Carey Island Mangrove Research Centre in Klang, Selangor. The trip’s objective was to educate and raise awareness among students on eco-conservation, and gain an understanding of the mangrove system and its benefits to mankind. A total of 35 students were given a detailed seminar of the mangrove ecosystem by the R&D Centre personnel. Armed with cameras and a can-do attitude, the students also tested their knowledge of scientific concepts with real life applications. Students also visited the Wildlife Sanctuary and the mangrove forest site. Says graduating student Gianita Andriana, “The whole experience was eye-opening and educational because we got to test out what we learnt in the classroom. I learnt that ecological preservation is important and the briefing by the Centre’s personnel was really detailed and informative.” Trees for Life th Bright and early on 24 April, 22 motivated and dedicated students from Grades 9 – 11 showed their commitment and devotion to help stop global warming by participating in the Shah Alam River & Trees For Life 2011 campaign. In conjunction with Earth Day, the students chose to demonstrate their support for the environment and their community by planting trees on the Section 13 Shah Alam riverbank. Ms. Litman, avid supporter of SIS’ Green Team praised, “The students never complained about the heat or getting dirty. They worked diligently and productively, and in unison to plant as many seedling trees as was possible on the muddy river bank to help avoid future erosion of the river bank and make a difference in theirs and other’s lives.” Contributed by Ms. Litman (nancyl@ sunway.edu.my) Vol 4 Issue 2 27 May 2011 GRADE 7 & 8 HAPPENINGS DECK THE HALLS WITH FOUR-LEAF CLOVER! 18th March — Ms. Anita celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at SIS with style.
