Becoming a Better Skier—Part 3

D
ecember is
here and I am
anxiously
looking forward to making my first trip up to
Tahoe for a weekend of
skiing. Only problem is,
where’s the snow? The
last couple of weeks
have seemed more like
summer. Unlike last
year, the Tahoe area is in
dire need of several major snowstorms. But I
have faith. I just know
that we’ll be hit with
several good rainstorms that will bring 2-3 feet of snow
up in the Sierras before the Christmas holidays.
Improving your racing and
getting good equipment
will make you a better
skier
If you missed out on the Pre-Season Casino Night/
Dinner – Ante Up!, then you missed a pretty good
party. The evening started out with a few stressful moments. For example, the restaurant switched us to a
smaller dining area than we had planned. Then there
was concern about fitting all the card tables in the
smaller room, but the committee and volunteers took
all this in stride. After a little rearranging here, and a
little rearranging there, the dining area was transformed
into a real western-style venue. Everyone enjoyed trying his/her luck at craps, blackjack, and pai-gow poker.
There were winners, and, of course, a few that were
lucky they weren’t playing for the real thing in Las Vegas! The highlight of the evening was the Silent Auction with our very own Alex Kami keeping everyone
updated on the latest bids. Although Alex’s voice was
fading by the end of the evening, he hung in there ‘till
the very end. I would like to thank all of the Ante-Up!
Committee members and the many volunteers for the
extraordinary job they did in making this a very successful event.

Racing
Coin-op racing is a great
form of practicing. Skiing
around the gates will make
you concentrate on your turns, your speed, and your
weight transfer all at the same time. Most of the gates are
timed. That is, the gates are evenly spaced so each turn
will be about the same. If you time the top gates, then the
rest of the gates will not be much different and you can
go through all of them without thinking about each gate
too much. Too much thinking will always turn into a
“yard sale”. For those of you who don’t know what a
“yard sale” is, that’s when you crash and your equipment
covers the racing course.
When you practice, work on just a few things at a time
like transferring your weight or starting a turn earlier. Try
and remember your skiing exercises like lean with your
knees and not your shoulders. So, if you lose your concentration, always go back to your skiing exercise for a
few runs until you get comfortable again. This way, skiing will always be fun and not become a chore.
Well-balanced skiing should be effortless. If you get tired
fast or if your legs fatigue easily, then you are probably
out of balance or worse yet, you are trying to muscle your
turns. If your thighs burn early, then you’re using far too
much muscle to ski. If you get out of breath easily during
a ski run, then you are thinking too much and trying to do
too much at one time. Relax. Skiing is supposed to be
fun.
By the way, you can never start a turn too early. If you
think too much about the process involved in making a
turn, then you will have passed the spot you were going
to start your turn and end up doing the long traverse with

The Bring a Friend Program – Frequently Asked Questions
Charles Akers
What are the basics of the program?
It’s simple. Convince a friend of yours to join NSC and come with you on an NSC weekend ski trip. Your friend
can deduct $50 off the cost of that first trip. After the trip is done, both you and your friend receive a $50 credit for
use on a future weekend ski trip. You get one $50 credit and your friend gets two $50 credits. You are called the
“sponsor” and your friend is called the “new member” in the program descriptions.
Can you give an example of how this works?
Here’s an example with sponsor Penn and new member Teller:
1. Current NSC member Penn convinces Teller to join NSC naming Penn as his sponsor on the membership application.
2. Penn and Teller go on Trip #1. Teller gets a $50 credit he can deduct from the cost of the trip. Penn pays the
regular price.
3. After the trip is completed Penn and Teller each get a $50 credit for use on a future trip.
4. Penn goes on Trip #2 and uses his one and only $50 credit.
5. Teller goes on Trip #3 and uses his second and last $50 credit.
Why does a sponsor only get one $50 credit while a new member gets two $50 credits?
The goal of the program is to increase attendance on weekend ski trips while keeping the cost of the program reasonable. The board committee designing the program concluded that one sponsor credit and two new member
credits would give the most return for the cost.
Why do new members get to use a credit on their very first trip while sponsors have to wait until a future
trip?
One reason is administrative— the sponsor (the current member who brings in a friend) is not entitled to a credit
unless his friend actually goes on a weekend trip so we have to wait until the trip is complete to see if that happened. The new member credit isn’t dependent on what the sponsor does—new members don’t need a sponsor to
participate in the program. We also felt it was reasonable to expect current members to ski with us at least twice
this season in order to get a credit.
What’s this about a contest?
The member who sponsors the most new members will receive a prize of one free weekend ski trip in 2007 (not
the long weekend trip) up to $165 in value. A minimum of three new members must be recruited to be eligible to
win the prize.
What’s the catch? Is there some small print somewhere that I should know about?
To keep the costs reasonable and minimize the administrative burden there are some restrictions. The major rules
and restrictions are as follows:
Skiers are not eligible as “New Members” in the program if they have been members of NSC any time in the past
two years (2003/2004 or 2004/2005).
Credits can be earned on regular weekend and long weekend trips but can only be used on regular weekend trips.
Only one credit can be used per trip.
The program and all unused credits expire on May 31, 2006.
The program is limited to the first 15 qualified new members who sign up and their sponsors.
The new member must name the person who recruited them (their “sponsor”) on their membership application in
order for the sponsor to receive credit.

The Bring a Friend Program – Frequently Asked Questions (cont’d)
(Continued from page 5)
It is the responsibility of sponsors and new members to claim their credits on their trip sign-up forms. Credits not
claimed on the sign-up form cannot be used for that trip but remain available for use on a future trip.
I’m a new member. Do I need a sponsor to get new member credits?
Not at all. New member credits are available to all new members whether they have sponsors or not. To be eligible for new member credits you may not have been an NSC member in 2003/2004 or 2004/2005. When you sign
up for your first two weekend ski trips be sure to check the box next to “I am claiming a New Member credit for
this trip” and leave the sponsor line blank. Once you join the club you are also eligible to earn sponsor credits for
any new members you recruit this season who go on weekend trips with us. Since you can only use one credit per
trip your sponsor credit would not benefit you before your third weekend trip, when your new member credits have
been used up.
Membership dues are not refundable and I don't want to join unless I know I'm going to get my
new member credits. How can I be sure I will be one of the first 15 new members?
Anyone whose membership application is postmarked no later than one day after the NSC website is updated to
show that the program is closed will be guaranteed their new member credits even if it takes us over the 15 person
limit. So if the website is still advertising the credit when you read this and you mail your membership application
today or tomorrow you will get the credit.
How do I make sure I get all my sponsor credits?
First, be sure to tell your friend to name you as their sponsor on your membership application so you get credit.
Second, make sure you complete your trip sign-up forms properly. That means filling in the name of your new
member on your trip sign-up form for your first trip with them and on your next trip claiming your sponsor credit
on the trip sign-up form.
Why is this paperwork necessary? If we make a mistake in filling out a form why does it matter?
Running the club on purely volunteer effort is a big job. Administering the program without adding excessive extra
work isn’t feasible unless we rely on members to give us the information needed for credits in a timely manner.
It’s up to you to make sure the membership application and trip sign-up forms are completed properly to claim the
credits. If you miss claiming a credit on the trip sign-up form for one trip you can still use it on a future trip.
Is this program really necessary?
Across the country ski club membership has been declining in recent years. We analyzed our own data from recent
years and confirmed what we already knew—our club membership and participation on weekend ski trips has been
declining. We have had to cancel some ski trips and charge more for trips than would be necessary if we had
higher ski trip attendance. The Bring a Friend program is one way the NSC Board hopes to reverse the trend.
Isn’t the club going to lose a lot of money on this program?
Not really. In fact in the long run the club will probably be better off financially because of the new members and
additional participation in ski trips. The additional annual membership fees are one factor but the most important
financial benefit is having more skiers on ski trips. Because we have to charge more per skier than the cost of taking one extra skier (such as food & lodging) in order to pay for fixed costs like the bus, taking more skiers on trips
should bring in enough money to cover the cost of the credits. We only pay credits for the first one or two trips
new members take but if they continue to ski with the club it can help the club’s finances for many years. It is possible if we get enough participation in the program that weekend ski trip prices in future years can be lower than
would otherwise be possible due to increased attendance. So get out there and recruit your friends!

Becoming a Better Skier—Part 3
(Continued from page 1)
a kick turn at the end and repeating
it again and again. Most skiers think
too much. You can only adjust to a
few things at a time. You have all
day. Enjoy it. Work on a few things
at a time until it becomes natural
then move on.
Good Equipment
Skis are getting softer from front to
back but getting stiffer torsionally,
from side to side. What this means is
that the recreational skier can turn
easier and ski on soft snow better.
Balance is better and as a result, less
effort is required to ski. Narrower
skis are good for hard-pack groomed
skiing. Wider skis work better in
deeper snow. But, remember the flex
in your ski is another important factor. If the flex is too stiff, then you
aren’t going to be able to initiate you
turns when you want. If it’s too soft,
then you will be overturning and
continually adjusting your balance.
Skis should be waxed at the beginning, end, and about every 5th ski
day of the season. Wax acts as a lubricant between the ski and snow.
This lubricant keeps the ski gliding
smoothly and protects you from
catching an edge. Wax also conditions the ski base, which make your
skis last longer. Big gouges and
broken edges need to be repaired
ASAP because if left unchecked,
you may need to replace your skis.
Bindings should be checked once a
season, as they are mechanical units
that can break and wear out without
your being able to see or feel it. Getting your skis and bindings checked
at the start of the season will keep
you from having a YARD SALE at
an inopportune moment. I had forgot
to reset my bindings when I took a
trip to Winter Park. It was the first
day of the season and there was
Nisei Ski Club Newsletter
powder up to my waist. I was looking down the most perfect double
black diamond chute you could
imagine. I dropped in and left my
skis at the top of the chute! In my
haste, I didn’t reset my bindings
after cleaning the skis and bindings
over the summer. YARD SALE.
Poles. There are two basic types,
aluminum and carbon composite.
Aluminum is less expensive and
will bend in a hard fall. You can
always bend it back into shape and
it is heavier than carbon poles.
Carbon composite poles cost more,
are more flexible and have some
shock absorption so your wrists
and shoulders don’t get as sore.
But, they will break instead of
bending.
One last thing that I want to mention is BOOT FIT. A boot should
be tight enough so your foot doesn’t move but is comfortable. Over
tightening a boot only increases
pain, which makes your feet cold
and uncomfortable. The boot has
to conform as you load and unload
your foot while turning. If your
feet move up or down or slide in
the boots, then you will never be
able to control your skis and make
comfortable turns. Good fitting
boots will control the ankle, forefoot, and instep area.
If the boots are too long or there is
room in the instep area, then black
toes are probably in your future.
Black toes are caused when your
foot slams into the front of the
boot. Bang! Just like someone hitting your toenail with a hammer. A
well-fitted boot won’t allow the
foot to move up, down, sideways,
or forward in the boot.
Socks and insoles also help keep
the foot planted in the boot. Insoles
8
cup the rear portion of the foot locking the heel and arch into a set position. Thin socks don’t allow the foot
to slide around the boot. Thick socks
should be avoided. No matter how
tightly you buckle up your boots,
thick socks create a sliding shear
point for your foot to move inside
the boot. Instead of keeping your
feet warm, the opposite occurs. Your
feet get cold because the buckle
pressure prevents circulation and
your feet will get cold and start to
hurt.
In the old days, boots were supposed
to hurt but with today’s different
moldable plastics, padding materials, and boot adjustments, boots
should never be painful after breakin. Boots are supposed to last three
to five years. Novice skiers who ski
only about twice a year will wear
out boots after 20 days of skiing or
transfer up to a boot with more control and adjustments whereas a hardcore skier who skis thirty days a
year will wear out boots after 120
days of skiing.
Soft boots or firm/race boots –
which is for you? The firmer the
boot, the longer it takes to break-in
and the longer it will last before it
starts to break down. In return, you
get better performance and greater
edge control over the skis. Lower
performance boots have soft-liners
and virtually no break-in period but
will not offer the performance and
control of performance boots.
Foamed boots are the perfect answer
for anyone who can’t find a boot
that fits. Super narrow or super wide
foam will fill in all the gaps around
your foot. Say goodbye to ankle
movement and so long to sliding feet
and bye-bye to pain. By the way,
foam boots should last 400 days!

John Oshima’s article on ski racing
and ski equipment. This is a great
article, and John gives some excellent tips. Even if you’re not a
“racer” your skiing can improve by
occasionally runnin’ the gates. The
techniques that John provides can
be used in your normal skiing:
weight adjustment and turn initiation, proper body stance, and turn
follow-through. The second part of
the article discusses ski equipment
(ski, bindings, and poles), and
probably the most important piece
of equipment you need – a properfitting ski boot. You can have the
most expensive skis and bindings,
but if your feet hurt because of
poor-fitting boots, then your skiing
will not be enjoyable.
The Christmas season is around the
corner and that means putting new
ski gear on Santa’s list. One item
for you consideration is a new ski
hat. Now, I don’t mean your plain
ordinary multi-colored knit hat
(you know, the one with a fuzzy
tassel on top). I’m talking about
something that will make a statement on the slopes! At last year’s
NASTAR races at Steamboat (the
ski week trip), I managed to draw
attention with my Jamaican dreadlocks ski cap. I hadn’t planned on
this; it was something that just
happened. So, for this year’s NASTAR’s races at Snowmass/Aspen,
think about getting a new hat and
you too can be stylin’ on the
slopes!
Everyone has worked hard during
the year; from our fund-raising
events to the many hiking, biking,
and water-ski events. But now is
the time to focus on our upcoming
ski events and have some fun. After all, this is what the Nisei Ski
Club is all about – promoting the
sport of skiing, friendship, and fun
within the community. I’m really
looking forward to skiing with
many of you this year.

Winter Park is Amazing
David Jensen
A
fter Thanksgiving, I went
to check on the conditions
in Tahoe and discovered,
to my dismay, that they had received only a few inches this year.
Next, I checked the conditions at
Winter Park, Colorado and found
to my excitement that they have
already received 84 inches! It
looks like Colorado is going to
have a great year and Winter Park,
as usual, is on track to receive the
most snow of all the Colorado resorts, even more than Vail. There
should be plenty of powder and
great conditions for everybody
who goes on the long weekend
trip. The photos in this article are
from this November.
The Winter Park ski area has a
9,000 foot base with a top elevation of 12,060 feet. There is 2,762
total skiable acreage, which makes
it 15% larger than Northstar. Winter Park has terrain for all levels of
skiers and snowboarders: beginner,
9%; intermediate, 21%; advanced,
13%; most difficult, 54%; expert
only, 3%. With 24 chair lifts, it
will be smooth sailing getting
around the mountain with much
shorter lines than Tahoe. Winter
Park consists of 5 distinct mountain areas: Winter Park, Mary Jane
(with 2,610' vertical), Vasquez
Ridge, Parsenn Bowl, and Vasquez
Cirque. Skiing and riding this resort will be a blast!
We will be staying in condos in the
town of Winter Park. Similar to
Park City, Winter Park offers a
free convenient shuttles to get
around town, to the ski area, and
even to the neighboring town of
Fraser. Our condos, however, are
waking distance from the center of
the town. The town of Winter Park
has plenty of dining variety with
more than 30 restaurants. As for
night life, there are about a dozen
bars, pubs, and/or clubs in town.
There is even an ice skating rink in
the center of town. The neighboring town of Fraser has a few more
amenities and is only a short free
shuttle ride away.
Since this is a long weekend trip,
you won't need to take much time
off from work or your other activities. In fact you'll only need to take
2 1/2 days at the very most and I'm
planning on getting into the office
early on Thursday so that I only
have to take 2 days off.
Need to be connected while you're
at Winter Park? Beaver Village
Condos, where we are staying, offers an onsite internet cafe and
WiFi access.
For those who are interested Winter Park offers a myriad of other
winter activities including: sleigh
rides, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice skating, and more.
I hope you're now as excited as I
am about this trip and sign up right
away. The deadline has been extended to December 10,2005 for
the early signup and January 10,
2006 for the final deadline. If you
signup before the Dec. 10 deadline,
you will be saving $45. So what
are you waiting for? Send in your
signup form today.
If you have any other questions
about Winter Park or the trip,
please feel free to contact me at
[email protected].

the designated Primary Tour leader (designated by an * next to their
name) for that trip or the Trip Director for assistance.
Cancellations/Roommate Assignments
1. Notify tour leader if you cancel. If unable to contact tour leader, call the
Trip Director.
2. There will be a $5 fee assessed for all cancellations if made 14 or more
days in advance of the trip date. After 10 PM, 14 days to the trip date,
the canceling party will lose the entire fee for the trip unless a replacement is approved by the Tour Leader/Trip Director in the following
order:
a) Persons on the waiting list will have first opportunity to fill the
cancellation.
b) If a replacement can't be found, the canceling party may try to get
a replacement. The Tour Leader must be notified of this.
c) If the bus is not full, additional skiers may be taken if approved by
the Tour Leader. This is required to assure accommodations.
3. All trip replacements are taken from a waiting list in priority of sign-up
only. You may request a roommate. But they must sign up before a trip
is filled or we will assign you a roommate.
4. In the case of odd numbers for room assignments, tripling up of individuals may be required. The last to sign up will be the first to be assigned to such accommodations. Under these circumstances, each person in these accommodations may be refunded a portion of the room
expense to be determined after the return of the trip.

7. Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be provided by NSC at the end of the
day. You may want to bring some munchies to share with others.
8. Changes from designated ski areas will be decided by the Tour Leader and a
vote of the Bus. During bad road conditions, the Bus Driver has the final decision.
9. Lift ticket costs are not included in the cost of the trip unless otherwise noted.
However, all ski resorts we plan to ski will give us a group discount. If you are
buying a group lift ticket, only cash will be accepted by the Tour Leaders.
10. Lessons for all beginner skiers and beginner snow boarders. To qualify, the
Nisei Ski Club member must be a beginner in both skiing and snowboarding.

group lesson in either sport. Limit: One lesson per lifetime for a maximum reimbursement payment up to your membership fee.
11. Poor Weather Policy. The bus will go to the scheduled ski area unless the
weather is extremely poor. In this event, the Tour Leaders will determine
whether poor conditions exist at the scheduled site. If poor weather does exist, a
vote of the bus will dictate the ski area but will not be used to dictate whether or
not to ski. Only a unanimous vote may be used to dictate early departures.
