Middle school exams will finish on Tuesday but the Canadian
Achievement Tests will be taking place all week for Grades 6-8. The
CAT tests provide us with an insight into the general curricular
strengths of our students and offer us the opportunity to set goals in
areas in which we feel we can do better. Participation of all students in
these tests is important for tracking both our progress as a school and
the progress of individual students.
Next week, CAT tests will be written by Grade 3-5 students during
class time. Keep in mind that these types of standardized tests are

about literacy and numeracy, not “facts,” so the greatest preparation a
student can do for them is to be well rested and well fed in the morning

After more than a month of preparation, the primary play “Toy Camp”
will be taking place this Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. It will be taped,
photographed and shared so please feel free to simply watch the live
version rather than barely be able to see it on the screen of your
cellphone...just sayin’!

We have officially set the date and time for the school ground-breaking
ceremony at the Innisfil Town property. The date is June 13 and the

Students will take along a picnic lunch, participate in various baseball/

COMPETENCE
Top: Grade 5 student Olivia G. served as a Simcoe County Junior Paramedic last Tuesday after
winning an essay contest. She was picked up at home in an ambulance, whisked off to the
Simcoe County Admin. Offices where she presented her essay to a number of the local mayors,
then met with members of the tactical team, K-9 unit and fire department before hitting the road
and eventually making it back to KBS where she and her classmates did a few exercises in first
responder care.
Middle: Middle school students were practising their best test-taking skills in exams last week.
Bottom: Primary students have been working hard on their play, Toy Camp, scheduled for
this coming Friday at 8:30.

June Character Theme: Forgiveness
Top Row: The Grade 1 class finished up the May theme of
Independence by reading ways in which they had worked on
becoming more independent at home and at
school during the month; the Grade 6 class
introduced the June theme of Forgiveness with a
story about a girl who put a rock in her pocket
each time she was upset by someone and, of
course, soon found her activities limited by the
burden of past transgressions.
Middle: SK student Maclean K. accepts the

Environment Club member Chloe C. introduced
the after-school sale of worm castings gathered
by the club during the year.

There are Stories Worth Telling—Graham Hookey
Our overall program emphasis this year has been on self-management. There have been consistent and
persistent attempts, at the classroom level, the daily assemblies, and in the communications of the
school, to educate students, staff and families on various topics related to self-management.
We have decided, as a staff, that next year’s theme is going to centre on writing, and I’m going to
arbitrarily assign it a title for the moment, “You Have a Voice.” I’ve used that terminology often during my
career to remind young people that through their words, written and spoken, they have the power to
influence and the power to initiate change, not just when they are adults, but throughout their life. We
need look no further than Yousafzai Malala to see an example that many young people are familiar with
and, of course, our continuing support of the work of Craig Kielburger and the Free the Children
Foundation, which he began when he was twelve years old.
Various famous leaders, (Napoleon being the most common) have been credited with the saying, "The
pen is mightier than the sword," but the first instance of this phrase being used in writing was by novelist
and playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, in his historical play, Cardinal Richelieu. Looking at the
development of human achievement, it’s pretty hard to argue that the development of the printing press,
and the subsequent sharing of knowledge through writing, did not dramatically increase the rate of man’s
progress. And now, with billions of pages of electronic information at our fingertips, that rate of
development has become supersonic.
Young people today not only have a voice, but they have a medium through which that voice can be
amplified in an extraordinarily fast manner. A quote, a tweet or a photo can travel around the world and
be viewed by millions of others in a matter of seconds. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s all good. There
is nothing more dangerous, nor more impossible to erase, than an impulsively sent out message that
gains both traction with, and the attraction of, the unkind.
I found myself reflecting on the school year last week, as I was standing and observing our students at
the track meets. For every student there, there were a multitude of stories I could think of as being
important in their development, but in reality it is only the stories that resonate in THEIR head that will
form a foundation for their future thinking. Perspective is a major factor in how we process information.
I want to share an example that I mentioned in assembly on Friday, one snippet of one student’s life
story. Head Girl Eve F. had a medical emergency just before the March Break requiring surgery, and
she spent the next two months recovering, and on very constrained exercise routines. She had much
less time to condition herself for track competition than most people on the team. At Wednesday’s meet,
with hot and muggy weather, she took off like a cheetah in the 400 m race running, as Ms. Lane would
describe it, “the race of her life.” In fact, coming down the back stretch she had a 15-20 metre lead on
everyone in her heat. But at the 398 metre mark, the tank was empty, and she simply fell to the track. In
the few seconds it took for her to realize what had happened, two competitors had crossed the line
ahead of her. It would have been easy, given her track burns, her dehydration, her exhaustion and no
doubt her embarrassment, to stay down and garner the attention of the many around who would
sympathize with her. She did not. She rose on wobbly legs, and walked the last metre, to finish on her
own. Perhaps had the tank had just a bit more in it, she’d have run the race of her life and had a happy
story to write. But instead, she faced what could have been a tragic story of defeat and in just one metre
of willpower, turned it into a story of personal courage and triumph.
This is a story worth telling, and I will do so in the future, I’m sure. It’s one of many this year!

options at KBS for the June 20-30
time period. Registration forms are
available at the front desk or in the
grade folders on the school website.
Keep in mind that these companies
need to make plans based on
minimum enrolments so if you wait
too late, there may not be a camp to
sign up for at the last minute!
