ith a total registration of 5,764
people from 63 countries and 47
states, the 83rd General Session &
Exhibition of the IADR in Baltimore, MD,
joined the ranks of the most successful
meetings in the history of the Association.
Baltimore was also the venue for the
34th Annual Meeting of the American
Association for Dental Research (AADR) and
the 29th Annual Meeting of the Canadian
Association for Dental Research (CADR).
The meeting included: 3,712 accepted
abstracts (820 orals, 2,854 posters), six
Hands-on Workshops, 29 Symposia, 36
Lunch & Learning speakers, 25 Keynote
Addresses, three Plenary Session speakers, the
first featuring the W.J. Gies Distinguished
Scientist Lecture (J. Bernard Machen
[President, University of Florida], speaking on
"From Proprietary Trade School to Integral
Component of the Academic Health CenterThe Long Journey to Academic Acceptance"),
and two satellite symposia. The other Plenary
Session speakers were Elias A. Zerhouni

registrants were members of the IADR.
After an entertaining program of
American popular music presented by The
Alexandria Singers, the Opening
Ceremonies began with the opening gavel
from IADR President Paul Robertson
(University of Washington, Seattle, USA),
who acknowledged the extraordinary
challenges faced by IADR members in
Southeast Asia in the aftermath of the
devastating tsunami in December. He also
called attention to the many visible reminders
of the new look of, and new content in, the
Journal of Dental Research, each issue of which
now includes two papers from Critical Reviews
in Oral Biology & Medicine. President

t is a great honor and privilege for me to be
President of the IADR for 2005-2006. I have
had the privilege of working closely with my
immediate predecessor, Paul Robertson, and
have learned much under his guidance. His
leadership over the past year will never be
forgotten by all IADR members. On behalf of
the IADR, I would like to express our heartfelt
thanks to Immediate Past President Robertson.
It will not be easy for me to follow in the
brilliant footsteps of the Past Presidents of the
IADR. I will try to do my best for all IADR
members to maintain and to further our
organization’s activities.
The General Session & Exhibition of the
IADR/AADR/CADR in Baltimore was
successful, thanks to the efforts of Executive
Director Christopher Fox and the Central
Office staff. We could count more than 5,550
delegates from 63 countries, with 2,854
poster presentations, 820 oral presentations,
29 symposia, six Hands-on Workshops, and

distinguished scientists as the plenary
speakers: Dr. J. Bernard Machen, Dr. Elias A.
Zerhouni, and Dr. M. Michael Cohen, Jr.

t a time when most teens are worrying
about SATs, college applications, and
prom dates, 16-year-old Rozina
Khouryawad, a junior at John F. Kennedy
High School in Bellmore, NY, is thinking
about "in vitro fibroblast growth on GTR
materials"…the title of the abstract she
presented at the recent 83rd General Session
of the IADR in Baltimore, MD.
Rozina is believed to be the youngest
person ever to present at an IADR meeting.
Mentored by several faculty at the New
York University College of Dentistry, she
presented her work as a poster in an Oral &
Maxillofacial Surgery session.
By no means "one-dimensional", Rozina
enjoys a full range of high school activities,
and currently serves as President of the Art
Club. She plans to pursue research into
college and beyond. l
Can You Serve
on a Committee?
Committees are the backbone of the
IADR and AADR, and each year the
Presidents-elect seek a wide variety of
volunteers, representing as many geographic
areas and scientific disciplines as possible, to
fill committee vacancies.
If you are interested in serving on an
IADR committee, beginning in 2006,
contact IADR President-elect Stephen Bayne
([email protected]).
Those interested in volunteering for
service on an AADR committee should
contact AADR President-elect E. Dianne
Rekow ([email protected]).
Please include a brief autobiographical
sketch to allow the Presidents-elect to make
a more informed decision.
For more information on IADR and
AADR Committees, and the level of
involvement required for each, please contact

IADR and AADR Councils
Approve Online JDR as an
IADR Membership Benefit
B
eginning in January, 2006, all IADR
and AADR members will receive
online access to the Journal of Dental
Research as part of their membership dues.
The JDR has the highest Scientific Impact
Factor of any dental journal in the world,
and each issue now contains two papers
from Critical Reviews in Oral Biology &
Medicine.
This dramatic and exciting action
marks the first time in the 84-year history of
the IADR that ALL members will receive
the official publication, regardless of
geographic location. Council believes that,
since the JDR is co-owned by the IADR and
the AADR, and is truly an international
publication, this step is critical to protecting
its future. l
IADR Reports.....Vol. 27
President’s Message...continued from p.1
instructive and informative for the audiences
who filled the lecture hall.
The Annual Session Committee expresses
grateful thanks to the Group Program Chairs
and Reviewers who worked hard through
such a short period to complete the necessary
abstract review and programming process.
In this Baltimore meeting, there were
some modifications to the traditional meeting
schedule. Oral sessions occurred only in the
morning, and posters were available for
viewing all day long, with poster presentations
scheduled in the afternoon. This greatly
increased attendance at oral sessions, with
most meeting rooms at least 80% full.
Another innovation was "Practitioner Day" on
Saturday, where we welcomed 80 general
practitioners to a program designed to transfer
our scientific knowledge to the daily practice.
For a first effort, the day was very successful.
There will be other "tests" in the Brisbane
meeting next year to explore new meeting
formats and bring more scientific excitement
to IADR members, and also open our doors to
general practitioners through our scientific
technology transfer programs. President-elect
Steve Bayne, as the next Annual Session
Committee Chair, welcomes your suggestions.
The IADR Council meeting allowed for
good discussion on several important subjects,
such as online access to the Journal of Dental
Research as a membership benefits, dues
increase, and revisions to the Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) between the IADR
and the AADR. Dr. Deborah Greenspan was
welcomed as the new IADR Vice-president,
and Dr. Angus Walls was also welcomed as
the new Treasurer. The Regional Board
Members, Drs. Jeroen Kroon, Mariano Sanz,
Yupin Songpaisan, José Luiz Lage-Marques,
and Richard Ellen, have been added to the
Regional Development Program committee
ex officio. We can expect the weight of all
Committee functions to increase.
As I stated in my President-elect’s
speech in Baltimore, the Board reviews and
discusses the Strategic Plan of the IADR
each year. We have adopted several strategic
recommendations in our structure and
functions. However, there are still some
issues we need to address in coming years.
For example, membership growth is
stagnant in several countries. Young faculty
and graduate students tend to present their
research at meetings other than the IADR
because of the more exciting responses they
can expect from other meetings. Regarding
meeting attendance, researchers from some
regions cannot come to meetings outside of
their countries due to high travel costs. Also,
we have to consider restructuring our
research group classification, because, as all
of us recognize, there have been changes in
research focus or research interests in our
field. More interdisciplinary approaches and
collaborative research with other professional
scientific fields have become increasingly
important. Our research outcomes affect not
only oral health care but also general health
promotion. There are not as many research
topics just for "Dentistry". We should have
more members from outside the dental field.
The great difference in numbers of members
among the various research Groups is
dramatic. All these issues relate to the need
to reconsider the meeting format and its
effect on our meeting budget.
Another issue is that recent economic
crises, war, disease, and the fear of terrorism
combine to reduce meeting attendance. From
these points of view, the important responsibilities of Federations expand significantly.
It is my pleasure to work together with
Board members to find a solution.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank
the staff in the Central Office of IADR for
their continuing support and commitment
to the Association, and I look forward to
working with them in the year ahead.
Please feel free to contact me with any
issues regarding future directions for the
IADR. I look forward to working with you to
ensure another successful year for the IADR.

Promoting Research in Developing Regions
A Request for Regional Development
Proposals from IADR Divisions and Sections
Rationale/Program Description
The purpose of this Request for Proposal
(RFP) is to identify projects, submitted by
IADR Divisions/Sections that would help
initiate research and development or
otherwise strengthen the oral health research
infrastructure in developing regions. In
response to appropriate proposals, grants will
be awarded to Divisions/Sections subject to
the availability of funds and approval by the
IADR Board of Directors. The size of
individual grants will vary, depending on the
number and quality of proposals submitted
and the amount of funding available.
Although it is desirable to encourage the
development of a research infrastructure in
as many developing regions as possible,
consideration will be given to supporting
ongoing initiatives that have demonstrated
an ability to promote research development.
Divisions/Sections currently having welldeveloped oral health research efforts may
submit proposals whose objective is to assist
adjacent regions/Divisions/Sections that do
not have such capacity. Where appropriate,
regional coalitions of Divisions are
encouraged to join together to submit
proposals and implement programs.
Wherever possible, the use of matching
funds to enhance the effort is encouraged.
Examples of projects eligible for support
include: training workshops and grants,
improving access to scientific information,
provision of scientific journals, fellowship and
lecture programs, communications
infrastructures, training in research methods,
and surveys of oral health that would
identify further research needs and provide
experience in conducting research for
participants, as well as other programs which
would advance oral/dental health research,
and improve communications and
collaborations in the oral health scientific
community in the region and internationally.
Proposals are reviewed twice annually. The
next submission deadlines are October 1,
2005, and March 1, 2006.
Focus of Proposals
Although a range of projects is eligible for
support, the IADR has decided to emphasize
certain areas. The highest priority will be
placed on those targeting support for:
• young scientists’ development by
supporting attendance at appropriate
local, regional, or international meetings
to present the results of their research;
• mentoring of developing scientists, e.g.,
travel for established scientists to work
on site with students/developing
researchers for various periods of time
(short "visiting lecture" programs will
not be considered for funding); and
• initiation/enhancement of newsletters
or other communication systems, e.g.,
use of the World Wide Web (www),
that describe and promote local oral
health research activities.
Proposals should not exceed five (5)
typewritten pages (approximately 1,000
words) and should be submitted in the
following format (www.dentalresearch.org):
Background
Grant applications should include a brief
historical background of the Division/Section
making the application and any experience it
has had in conducting activities promoting an
oral health research infrastructure or activities.
The region/institution to be targeted may be
within the Division/Section or in an adjacent
region, and it should be described.
Objectives
List the specific objectives to be achieved.
Program Description/Evaluation
Applications should include a full description
of the proposed program(s), project(s),
initiative(s), or infrastructure development
and how the targeted area would be affected.
The description should include a
methodology, a time line, and a plan to
evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
Financial Request/
Matching Support
A grant program budget should be
provided. Please indicate the amount in US
dollars for each aspect of the program and
the time line required to implement the
program outlined above. Indicate if
university, institution, association, or
corporate support will be added to this
grant, the length of this financial
commitment, the US$ amount, and the
number of personnel who will supplement
the grant program. Describe the institutional support, name the responsible
institutional officials, and include a signed
letter of support from the institution.
Research Publication
Grant applicants should indicate if the
results of this grant will be submitted for
publication in a professional journal or
presentation at a scientific meeting. If so, the
name of the journal or meeting should be
included. Approval of the grant is not
contingent upon publication or presentation.
Reporting
No later than (4) months after the
completion date of the project, as described
in Part III above, the Division/Section shall
provide a written report to the IADR
Central Office describing the results of the
initiative. The description should follow the
evaluation plan outlined in Part III. A
summary report should be submitted for
publication in IADR Reports and on the Web
site (www.dentalresearch.org).
Application
Each Division/Section may present only one
proposal per grant cycle. To apply for a
grant, a Division or Section should submit a
signed original and two copies of the grant
proposal in English to the IADR Central
Office in Alexandria, Virginia, USA, no later
than October 1 or March 1. Proposals
should be typewritten in the format outlined
above. Grant applications that lack the
required information will be returned to the
originators with an explanation of the
proposal’s shortcomings. All grant
applications will be evaluated and approved
or rejected by the IADR Board of Directors.
Applicants will be notified of the status of
their submissions prior to the formal
announcement of funded proposals. The
proposals will be evaluated according to the
establishment of clear and measurable
outcome variables. For example, a proposal
to launch or enhance a newsletter should
include a description of the number and size
of issues to be produced within a specified
period as well as a specific plan for
continuation of the medium subsequent to
the grant support period. Support for
scientists beginning research careers should
specify the number of those who are
currently able to travel to meetings, the
level of support for each scientist’s travel,
and the additional number projected to
attend national/international meetings as a
result of the grant. l

Designed to stimulate and recognize
outstanding and innovative achievements
that have contributed to the basic
understanding of salivary gland structure,
secretion and function, or salivary
composition and function. The recipient
should not be a recipient of a previous
IADR Science Award other than Edward
H. Hatton or Young Investigator.
This award is supported by the
William Wrigley, Jr. Company, and consists
of a cash prize and a plaque. Significant
research accomplishments can have been
accomplished in either basic sciences or
applied clinical sciences.
Wilmer Souder Award
Initiated in 1955, this is the oldest of the
Science Awards. The award honors Dr.
Wilmer Souder, the motivating force in
establishing the Dental Section at the
National Bureau of Standards (now the
National Institute of Standards and
Technology), and is designed to perpetuate
the scientific ideals that he exemplified, and
to encourage interest in dental materials
research.
The award is made on the basis of
scientific achievement of outstanding quality
that has advanced or may reasonably be
expected to significantly advance dental
service to the public. It is intended to confer
the highest honor in the field of dental
materials research upon those scientists who,
through research in this field, bring about
outstanding advances in dental health.
Established by IADR’s Dental
Materials Group, and supported by the
William T. Sweeney Memorial Fund and the
Group, the award consists of a cash prize
and a plaque.
Young Investigator Award
Supported by the Procter & Gamble Co.,
this award is designed to stimulate basic
research in all dental research disciplines.
This award consists of a cash prize and a
plaque.
The nominee must not have reached
his/her 36th birthday at the time of the
meeting at which the award is presented.
Nomination Regulations
The Science Awards Committee has the
responsibility of selecting awardees from
among the nominations of renowned
scientists submitted by Association
members. The Committee consists of the
Science Awards chair and the
subcommittee chair for each award. The
subcommittees are composed of the
previous award recipients. If an award
recipient is not a member of the IADR,
then a replacement will be selected on the
basis of his/her expert knowledge in the
field of the award. Appointments are made
annually for a period of five years on a
rotation basis.
Any IADR member may nominate a
candidate for a science award. The deadline
for nominations is August 15, 2005. Once
