FYLPRO SUMMIT in NYC. 5 – 7 June 2015 This year, FYLPRO is partnering with Unipro for the annual leadership summit. The Summit will take place in New York, during the same weekend as the NYC Philippine Independence Day Parade. We will start on Friday, 5 June, in the late afternoon to have our delegates’ reunion and roundtable with Ambassador Cuisia followed by a casual reception with the Unipro Summit participants. Saturday, 6 June will be dedicated to supporting Unipro’s 2015 summit theme: Recognize. This theme will elevate the Pilipino American social conscience and propel FYLPRO delegates' critical consciousness about the compelling but polarizing Shown here (L – R): Ryan Letada, FYLPRO ’14, Philippine Ambassador Cuisia, PAL President Jaime Bautista, NYC Philippine Consul General Mario de Leon, Jr., and Rachelle Ocampo, FYLPRO ‘13 social justice issues pervading society, especially in light of the recent tragedies of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Akai Gurely, and Marissa Alexander. We will encourage our delegates to use their strengths, skills and networks to reimagine methods to create social impact in solidarity with fellow communities of color. On Sunday, 7 June, FYLPRO delegates will march with DFA during the NYC PI parade. We are looking for help to plan this weekend summit. Please contact Bea, Louella, or Rachelle if you are available to help with things like summit planning, event promotion, sponsorships, etc.. Delegates who help will be provided with a larger travel/summit subsidy. FYLPRO APPLICATIONS – ONE WEEK TO GO Please help us promote this year’s leadership immersion program. Dolor Sit Amet 2 1 2 FYLPRO 1Q15 E-Balita Lorem Ipsum | Date Issue 1 | 23Issue March 2015 + Legacy project feature: Eri silkworm cultivation supports Philippine Silk industry Ambension Eri Silk Enterprise is a social business venture, engaged in the rearing and propagation of the Samia cynthia ricini worm (also known as Eri worm) for the purpose of selling worm stock, cocoons, raw silk and the production of Eri silk yarn and fabric. A unique feature of Eri silk that is distinct from mulberry silk is its potential for Ahimsa, or peace silk, because Eri cocoon silk may be harvested without killing pupae. Although the mulberry silk industry is already established in the Philippines, there is currently no Eri silk business of this magnitude in the Philippines. Eri worms were first brought to the Philippines from Ceylon in 1909, but that industry did not develop. The Eri silkworm stock of Ambension Dolor Sit Amet originated from a now-defunct Palawan livelihood program started by a Japanese NGO and the United Nations Development Program in 2000. Ambension Eri Silk was founded by Jan Paul Ferrer, 2014 FYLPRO delegate, and Almira Astudillo Gilles, 2012 Philippine-Presidential awardee. Collaborative partners include Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm for the incubation site, Gawad Kalinga Chicago for financial support, and the Philippine Fabric Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) for technical support. 3 1 2 FYLPRO 1Q15 E-Balita Lorem Ipsum | 2015 Date Issue 1 | 23Issue March FYLPRO Joins US-Philippine Society in Tacloban Visit On the last week of January of this year, FYLPRO Vice President, Louella Cabalona (‘12), joined the US-Philippine Society Board of Directors (to include Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, Ambassador John Maisto, Henry Howard, and George SyCip) and visited recovery projects sponsored by the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation, a key partner of the Society in Haiyan recovery and rehabilitation initiatives. The group viewed transitional resettlement projects near Tacloban, cut the ribbon at newly renovated school classrooms, and met with beneficiaries of livelihood assistance projects, including by Board Members Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble to assist local sarisari stores. FYLPRO @ THE 3RD GLOBAL SUMMIT OF FILIPINOS IN THE DIASPORA On 25 – 27 Feb in Manila, Louella Cabalona (’12) and Anthony Guevara (’13) attended the 3rd Annual Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora hosted by the Commission of Filipinos Overseas (CFO). They met with local and international experts to exchange inspiring insights, experiences, and innovations. Through workshops and exercises, the Summit produced a clear vision and strategic action plan for Filipino diaspora communities for 2015 and beyond, and how the government, civil society organizations, academe and private sector can maximize its partnerships with the overseas Filipinos towards common objectives, and vice versa: Diaspora to Development.
