Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317 My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! In our first reading this weekend, the prophet Isaiah heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And the prophet Isaiah said: “Here I am, send me!” Almost four years ago now, our school principal Kathy Lifka heard the call to become principal of St. Andrew the Apostle School, and I am so grateful she also said “Here I am, send me!” These past four years have seen great changes in our school, and Mrs. Lifka has valiantly weathered the difficult changes and helped bring forth wonderful positive change for our students and families, especially in the areas of a more focused concentration on our curriculum and the use of technology in our classrooms. Below, Mrs. Lifka shares and explains her announcement that at the end of this school year, she will be retiring. I ask for prayers for her and her family. I also seek your continued prayer and support for our St. Andrew the Apostle School especially for these months ahead as Mrs. Lifka finishes her dedicated service with us through June and helps us transition to a new principal for next year. We are now beginning a new Principal Search Process through guidance by the Catholic Schools Office of our Diocese. I will share with you in the near future more details of this process, which includes seeking any input and suggestions from our parishioners and school families regarding a new principal. Catholic Education continues strong in our midst because of such generous women as Mrs. Lifka, who has dedicated so much of her life to this Catholic Education of our children. As we search for the new principal God intends to send our way, again, I ask that you keep Mrs. Lifka and her family in your prayers for God’s abundant blessings upon her and her whole family. St. Andrew the Apostle, pray for us! In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor Dear Parishioners, For the past 41 years, my vocation has been in the educational field, and 31 of those years have been dedicated to Catholic Education. However, due to family needs and health issues, I am retiring from education. These past four years at St. Andrew the Apostle School have been quite a learning experience. I have had to wear many hats, but I could not have done it without the support of the faculty, the staff, the parents and the parishioners who are dedicated to the success of St. Andrew. While I had hoped to remain at St. Andrew for a few more years, my family and my health need my full attention. Therefore, effective July 1, 2016, I will leave St. Andrew in the capable hands of the next principal. However, I will continue to give my full effort until that time. St. Andrew will thrive and improve with the support of the faculty, the staff, the parents and the parishioners. A committee will be formed to select a new principal who will continue the work to make St. Andrew School strong. May God bless the St. Andrew community with people committed to its success. Sincerely, Kathleen M. Lifka, Principal Lent is almost here. Forty special Days for extraordinary fasting, praying, giving. We will fast to sharpen our senses. We will pray to focus our attention on God in Christ. We will give up some things and give away more things, in order to give ourselves over to a Christian life of compassion and mercy. This Lent, I want to…. This Lent, I need to…. This Lent. These days. This time. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! “Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Our helpline 815-886-4165 ext. 304 All calls are confidential with callbacks within 24 hours. In the Gospel today, Peter questioned Jesus when told to lower the nets for another catch. After a large catch that broke the nets, Peter confessed his sinfulness when he doubted Jesus’ advice. We must look at the simple manifestations of holiness that indicate the presence of God in our lives. May our lives be a sign of faith, hope, love and justice to all. If you or someone you know is in need of temporary assistance please call our helpline. Our yellow donation envelops are in the back of the church and at the hall exists. 50/50 RAFFLE WINNERS-FEBRUARY SUNDAY COLLECTION January 30 & 31 $16,386.30 Ash Wednesday Schedule February 10, 2016 50/50 Raffle Winners for February have been pulled. February 7, 2016 Page Five 2016 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL Please Participate! Your Gift Makes a Difference! This weekend at each Mass you will be asked to participate in our diocesan-wide Commitment/In-Pew Weekend for the 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). The CMAA is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a one-time gift or pledge your gift over ten (10) months to support the good works of the diocese. A gift to the CMAA will touch the lives of many in our diocese in a positive way. Each gift makes a difference! Together, the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry and services to those who need it most. As you take the time to review the tabloid and see all the work enabled by the CMAA, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. We were “Chosen by God’s Grace” and together we can give thanks to Him for our blessings through a gift to the CMAA. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who have not received the mailing, we will conduct our Commitment/In-Pew Weekend process at all Masses next weekend. For those of you who were unable to make a decision about your commitment this weekend, please prayerfully consider doing so online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or by returning a Commitment/In-Pew Weekend envelope to the parish next week. If you received a pledge form in the mail, you may return it via mail. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $72,995 in paid pledges, 65% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish.
