May is a busy month!
This week has been
filled with activities
and events. On Monday, our students returned from their final
closed weekend for
this school year. Tuesday, Weaver Cottage
enjoyed a picnic at
Lakeside Park in Pell
City. Our seniors were
honored with dinner at
“Top of the River”.
Our little ladies in
Graves Hall West enjoyed a “tea party” in
the Gilchrist Room,
complete with decorations and delicious
desserts. Tea was served from
porcelain tea services collected during a staff member’s international travels.
Wednesday was a big day as
the campus loaded up and
went to see the open-

captioned movie hit “Spider
Man 2” in Oxford. Two of
our seniors, Holden Hess and
Brittney Fisher participated
in the Optimist Club’s scholarship competition, presenting their essays “How My
Optimist Club Scholarship recipient, Holden Hess, with Vera Hendrix
Passion Impacts the
World”. Holden was the
winner of a $2,500 college
scholarship! On Thursday,
Taylor Hall, Henderson
Hall, McDonald Hall, and
Jemison House hosted a
cookout, while the Lady
Warriors celebrated their
Mason Dixon championship with dinner in Oxford.
Friday after school, staff
will have the opportunity
to play “Ultimate Frisbee”
on the football field. Saturday, Jr. NAD will take a
trip to Six Flags in Georgia
while the Pee Wee group
will head to Oak Mountain
in Birmingham. Sunday
will be an opportunity to
attend church and an end
of year picnic. Have a
great weekend!

Our Mission Statement
Our mission is to
provide quality
individualized
educational programs,
unique experiences, and
fully accessible services
for students who are
deaf and hard of
hearing that empower
them to be functioning,
productive, and
responsible members of
society.
The Summer Reading program at
the Alabama School for the Deaf has
been accepting
applicants for over a
week now, in
preparation for the
upcoming summer
break! Students who
signed up will read a
book—or three—and
complete an
assignment, based
on the book.
Students who
complete the work
successfully will receive prizes when
they return to school in the Fall.
Students who read one book will
receive a backpack full of school
supplies. Students who
read two books will
receive a USB, as well
as the supplies-filled
backpack, and students
who read three books
will receive a Mystery
Trip (as well as the 1–
and 2-book prizes).
The Summer Reading
program will involve
students in 6th through
11th grades, and is
being headed up by Ms. Amy Locke and
Ms. Vicki Hardy.
