Books Galore!
Volume 4 Issue 18
February 28, 2015
After we celebrated the 100th Day of School last
month, my 1st and 2nd grade students wondered if
they could read 100 AR books. I told them that they
CAN do it! We all agreed to make this our class goal
– if we met the goal, then we would go out for
lunch! For the last 15 school days, all we did was
read, read, and read AR books, then took AR quizzes. Also, we made a goal thermometer ( out of
100 small boxes – see the picture) which helped
us stay on track. For each AR quiz that a student
passed, we filled in one small box, using our assigned crayons. ( It was easier for me to know how
many AR quizzes my students took and passed ) .
We MADE it! In just 15 days, six students read 100
AR books!! We voted on where to go out for
lunch...Stampede and Matehuala were our top two
choices! We ended up going to Matehuala for Mexican lunch! We also practiced how to order our
drinks and food through writing and/or speechreading. We had to bring our notes and pencils to help
us communicate with the waiter! He was very patient with us. We had a GREAT lunch filled with great
chats, laughter, and good manners! - Ms. Mattox,

AIDB President Dr. Mascia’s Portrait Unveiled
AIDB ’ s President, Dr. John Mascia ’ s portrait was unveiled and is to be
displayed in AIDB ’ s Manning Hall. His portrait was painted by artist Bill
Sparks, a former ASD student.
Bill Sparks first came to ASD at age 6. He was always drawing and often
would draw on sidewalks outside the classrooms at ASD. His teachers
recognized his talent. Sparks grew up to be a renowned artist and has
painted many portraits of university presidents, executives and politicians, such as Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, where Sparks
currently resides. Sparks has done portraits of nine of AIDB ’ s 17 presidents, including the current president, Dr. John Mascia.
“ I t ’ s a humbling experience to have a portrait painted and to have it
hanging on the walls of Manning Hall. I thought he did a great job. As a
matter of fact, I think the portrait looks better than I do in real life ” , said
Dr. Mascia.
Dr. Mascia watches as Amanda Fuller and Clarence Haynes, Chairman of the
AIDB Board of Trustees, unveil the official portrait.
