If you have, you know just how massive these vehicles are! Monster trucks are typically about 11 feet tall and 12 feet wide. Although they have a body that looks like a huge pickup truck, they are actually more closely related to a four-wheel-drive dune buggy. The front wheels are controlled by a steering wheel, while the back wheels are managed by a toggle switch. Monster trucks are equipped with harnesses, helmets, and head and neck restraints to keep the driver safe. 1B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. It was built and operated by Bob Chandler. He began building the first Bigfoot in 1975, using his family’s four-wheel-drive pickup truck. In 1979, Chandler began making appearances at tractor pull events. In 1981, he crushed two old cars in a field and had it videotaped so he could show it in his auto shop. A man saw the video and asked Chandler to perform the same stunt in front of a crowd. It quickly became popular, and now millions of people buy tickets to watch monster trucks in action. 2B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? When he invented them, he hoped that they would taste bad. You see, he was irritated with a cranky guest who had complained that Crum’s potatoes were too soggy, thick, and bland. The guest had requested that Crum make him a new batch. Chef Crum wanted to “teach the guest a lesson” about insulting the chef, so he made a batch that was paper-thin, overcooked, and over-salted. To his surprise, the diner loved the second batch! Word spread quickly, and potato chips became a very popular snack. 3B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? Potatoes are one of the most versatile foods in the world. You can bake a potato and eat it whole, or you can cut them up and roast them in the oven. Many people boil potatoes and then beat them until the potatoes are smooth, creating mashed potatoes that can be covered with gravy. Potatoes can be made into French fries, potato chips, hash browns, soft dumplings, or potato salad. Cooks often use potatoes in soups and casseroles. No one can accuse the potato of being useless! 4B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Seven Varieties of Potatoes B. Ways to Prepare a Potato C. French fries should always be served with ketchup. 5 The stories of ancient Egypt have survived for thousands of years. One reason we know so much about their civilization 4000 years later is because of the mummies they preserved so carefully. A mummy is the body of a person that has been preserved after death. Egyptians believed that they had to preserve their bodies so that they could use them in the afterlife, where they would journey to another world to lead a new life. They also believed that they would need all of the things they had used when they were alive, so their tombs were packed with their belongings. When these tombs were discovered, they were filled with artifacts that told us stories about life in ancient Egypt. 5B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Mummies: Clues to the Past B. Life in Ancient Egypt C. Egyptian Beliefs D. The Fall of Ancient Egypt What is the main idea of this passage? 5A A. Some mummies are 4000 years old. B. Mummies were buried in tombs. C. Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife that existed after they died on Earth. D. Egyptian mummies and their tombs have provided us with clues about life in ancient Egypt. Tomb walls can tell a story, as well, because they were often painted with scenes from the dead person’s life. C. The ancient Egyptians lived along the Nile River, using its rich soil for farming. D. Egypt is located in the northeast corner of Africa. 6 The ancient Egyptians followed a lengthy process to preserve dead bodies. Mummification, or the process of preserving a body, took seventy days. First, the body was washed and purified. Then all organs except the heart were removed (they believed the heart was the center of intelligence and emotion). Next, they filled the body with stuffing and then covered it with natron, a saltlike substance that dried the bodies. After 40-50 days had passed, the stuffing was removed and replaced with linen or sawdust. Finally, the body was wrapped in strips of linen and placed in the stone coffin, called a sarcophagus. For instance, the word “disaster” originated in Greece. In Greek, “dis” means “bad” and “aster” means “star”. What does “bad star” have to do with the word “disaster”? Well, the ancient Greeks used to blame unfortunate events on unfavorable positions of the planets. “Muscle” is another interesting word. It is derived from a Latin root meaning “little mouse” because people used to think muscles looked like little mice under the skin. What word do you want to know more about? Its origin just might astound you! 7B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? What is the main idea of this passage? 7A A. There are millions of words in the English language. B. It can be interesting to discover unusual word origins. C. Greek and Latin languages were formed long ago. D. “Muscle” means “little mouse and “disaster means “bad star”. World Languages D. “Luna” is the Spanish word for “moon. 8 Penny licks were popular ice cream treats sold by street vendors in the mid to late 19th century. Buyers would pay one penny to be given a tiny serving of ice cream in a special glass container. No spoons were used; buyers simply licked the glass dish clean and returned it to the vendor, who would reuse it. This obviously raised health concerns, and penny licks were banned in London in 1899. However, they were used in the United States into the 20th century until the ice cream cone became popular after the World’s Fair in 1904. 8B Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? In fact, it is estimated that only 20 to 25% of bicyclists wear helmets, even though they know that wearing a helmet could save their life if they were involved in a bicycle accident. Consider this sobering statistic: nearly 75% of all fatal bicycle crashes involve head injuries. Furthermore, 722 people were killed in bicycle crashes in 2012, and 83% of those killed were not wearing helmets. It allows us to communicate with others quickly. As people began texting, acronyms and abbreviations became widely used. Phrases like B4N (bye for now), CU L8R, (see you later), DYK (did you know), HYH (have you heard), and JK (just kidding) were acronyms that did not exist before text messaging became so popular.
