Volume 16, Issue 5 Summer 2014 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CATHOLIC SCHOOL Page 2 TIGER’S MOUTH Volume 16, Issue 5 From the Principal... Dear Parents, This edition of the Tiger’s Mouth includes many of the past school year’s accomplishments. Our 70th anniversary year was filled with many first time achievements. I am very proud of the many ways our students represented themselves in sports, fine arts, and academic competitions both in and out of school. They are fine examples of what dedication and hard work can bring them and all that can be accomplished when the high expectations of parents and the school are met. I am very proud of our teachers and coaches who devoted so much time and effort to support the students’ efforts. I look forward to the beginning of the new school year which I am sure will bring great rewards. We have some new additions to our faculty. They include: Ms. Teresa Caram-PK, Mrs. Jessica Sprague-third grade, Mrs. Kathy Zimbaldi-6th and 7th grade English and literature, Mrs. Dara Haddad-8th grade history, and Mrs. Barbara Mattson– Receptionist. We are very happy they are joining our faculty. They all bring a dedication to Catholic education, along with many years of experience. I look forward to meeting our new families as well as welcoming all returning families to the new school year. Please plan on attending our scheduled parent nights as well as the Welcome Back Coffee in the coming weeks. It is a great way to get off to a good start and forging a partnership for the coming year. Yours in Christ, Carolyn Sears Staff & Faculty Mrs. Nina Maxwell has transitioned from PK to Kindergarten with Mrs. Bogenwright and Ms. Acomb. Ms. Theresa Caram will assist Mrs. Pruet-Collins with PK. Mrs. Jessica Sprague will teach 3rd grade with Mrs. Mann. Mrs. Kathy Zimbaldi will teach English literature and writing to 6th & 7th graders. Mrs. Berry will teach technology and provide tech support to staff and faculty. Mrs. Dara Haddad will teach middle school history. Mrs. Barbara Mattsson is the new morning receptionist. SVdP thanks these faculty and staff members for their years of service and loyalty! SVdP Catholic School was voted one of “Houston’s Top Workplaces” by the Houston Chronicle for the third year in a row. Volume 16, Issue 5 TIGER’S MOUTH Page 3 From the PTO President... I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing, fun-filled summer! Your PTO has been hard at work the past few months planning community-building events and fundraisers for the upcoming year. Please take a moment to mark your calendar with the upcoming events listed on page 4. In addition to these events, I would like to highlight the activities that PTO sponsors during the year. It takes countless volunteers and boundless dedication to get it all done, and I would like to thank everyone for sharing their time and talents. Thank you to the PTO directors and committees of: Cabrini Festival – Our international festival returns this year with a focus on the Holy Land. Carmen Fitzpatrick will orchestrate this educational celebration. (Career Fair and the Cabrini Festival typically alternate yearly, however this year is an exception.) Concessions – Laura Sage will be coordinating concessions at on-campus sporting events where our SVdP athletes are competing. Enrichment – Lisa Gasper and Maria Jose Redondo Nieto will work closely with our school counselors and Mrs. Sears to support our school’s goal of continuing to foster a respectful school environment, and promoting self-respect, self-discipline, and selfconfidence within the context of a faith-filled environment. This will include coordinating programming, speakers, and events, including Power of One Week, the Academic Pep Rally, and Tiger Pride Days. Faculty Liaison – Elizabeth Tanner provides insight and sug- gestions to PTO, and she works as a liaison to communicate PTO affairs with our faculty and staff. Hospitality –Kari Clay and Lori Etlinger will coordinate the following for our school faculty: birthday celebrations and gifts, the Catholic School’s Week Luncheon, and Teacher Appreciation Week activities, just to name a few. In addition, they will host the Back-to-School Coffee, and coordinate refreshments for Grandparents’ Day and other events throughout the year. Party Packs – Faith Sepe and Allison Sovany have worked this summer to select and coordinate items to include in children's birthday Party Packs, which will be delivered to the classroom on designated days. Performing Arts – Rachel Bush and Olguita Santiago Rodriguez will ensure the “show goes on”, as they coordinate volunteers for Grandparents’ Day, Christmas and Spring Musical Programs, and Jazz Night. Public Relations– Kristina Drone and Maribel Nolla will cover “all things SVdP” for the local media. Room Parent Coordinator – Esmer Vale has been busy this summer putting room parents in place and preparing the classroom volunteer sign-up sheets. Please look for sign-up sheets in your child’s classroom at Parent Night. Sports Parent Coordinator- Mary Callaghan and Tiffany Leyendecker will be working with the coaches and the athletes’ parents to ensure that SVdP sports’ teams have the necessary volunteer support. Tiger Bucks – Lizzy Culotta and Tracy Rijken will coordinate all “free money” programs for our school. Programs include Box Tops for Education, restaurant nights, local grocery store partnerships, shopping days, and many others, all of which result in a percentage of purchase amounts paid to the school. Tiger Market – Tricia Hoffman and Carrie Schwartzenburg have worked this summer developing the Tiger Market spirit gear offerings. Tiger Market gear will be available for purchase this year on our school’s online SVdP Store and at Back to School (formerly Orientation). Tiger’s Mouth Newsletter –Janet Champagne and Lucy Anderson will be responsible for designing and editing the Tiger’s Mouth newsletter. Five issues will be available online and in print. Used Uniforms – Monica Cruces and Mauria Still will have the tough (but very much appreciated) jobs of washing, sorting, storing, and selling used uniforms. They will also work to return all properly labeled Lost & Found items to their owners. Yearbook – Valerie Cortez, Melissa Iero, and their team will be capturing the memorable moments of 2014-2015 for the Tiger’s Roar yearbook. Executive Board – Sheila Berggren, Michelle Bickham, Kelly Hogan, Claire Hughes, and Heather Montoya work with the PTO President in guiding and advising their respective PTO Board members. Their responsibilities also include organizing the “Get to Know SVdP” and the Positive Parenting Speaker series, overseeing all communications and the online SVdP Store, managing the Buddy Family program, preparing meeting minutes and financial reports, and running the PTO Board nominations process. I would like to thank Kelly Hogan, PTO VP/President-Elect, for co-hosting the informative small-group New Parent Meetings in May, and for planning the recent New Family Breakfast for new SVdP families and their Buddy Families. In addition to the 40 PTO board directors, we need the sup- port of every family to continue to build on the successes of our school. Please contact me if you have questions or want to get involved in PTO - 713-562-5774 or [email protected] . PTO dues are payable at Back to School checkout. Together, we can do our part to support this fantastic school and its goal of developing students to their fullest potential in an environment permeated with Gospel values. Ms. Halls is a Spirit of Texas author and is on the 2014 HAISLN recommended reading list for Tales of the Cryptids: Mysterious Creatures That May or May Not Exist. Coming to us from Spokane, WA, Ms. Halls has a long list of awe-inspiring books on a variety of unusual themes, such as dinosaurs and Sasquatch, as well as titles from the National Geographic Kids series. School Board News As we start a new school year, the Board would like to thank Penny Grams, Cindy Fiegel and Joe Watson for their selfless service over the past three years to SVdP. Penny Grams has served us with her insight on the Advancement and Extra-curricular committees. Her positive energy, dedication to our school and parish and her enthusiastic spirit will be missed. It will also be hard to replace Cindy Fiegel whose organizational skills, positive attitude and incredible support of the school is contagious. Cindy has stepped into various roles chairing the Technology and Student Affairs committees during her tenure. The board also wishes to express its appreciation to Joe Watson who has devoted many hours to help improve our school’s Long-Range planning, Facilities and Advancement committees. Joe’s good counsel and business savvy will be missed at school board meetings. While we say farewell to those rolling off the board, we welcome our newest members: Frank Hogan, Katherine Macy and Jennifer Rosenfeld -- and the Board looks forward to working with them in the years ahead. We would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone who expressed an interest in serving on the school board and participated in the discernment process in April. The Board, Monsignor Bill and Mrs. Sears sent out the 2014 parent survey summary results in the May mailing. If you have any questions, please contact a member of the school board or the school’s administration. Our key focus for this coming school year will be in furthering SVdP’s strategic plan, which can be found on Edline under the School Board Contents folder. If you have an interest in serving on a School Board committee this year, please reach out to any member of the 2014-15 School Board Executive Committee. I hope you had a safe, fun summer!
